    This past Wednesday, I returned a rental car to the SAN airport and needed to get to Oceanside, so I chose the Coaster. It was my first experience using public transportation in SoCal, and it was excellent. On time, clean, comfortable, Wifi, inexpensive, and the route is beautiful to boot. Cannot ask for more.

    2:47 I read that LOSSAN hopes to build a new intermodal rail station serving Coaster, San Diego Trolley, and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains that is dedicated specifically to San Diego International Airport. Presumably, the location of this new station will be either around or next to the existing Washington Street San Diego Trolley station. Hopefully we will see the station built within the next few years.

    Most people don't know this: Coaster fares are valid on Amtrak all the time, except for a few holidays and major events. As a result, we have basically twice-an-hour service from Oceanside and Solana Beach to San Diego. That's just $13 for a 80 mile round trip.

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  2 года назад +4

      I didn't know that! That's a great value, especially for a ride on Amtrak!

      @@LonestarTrips - You're welcome! Personally, another option is the $15 regional day pass, which gives unlimited rides on buses and trolleys as well as Coaster all day and night. It's fun to travel around America's Finest City!

    That is interesting that Coaster and AmTrak override the same routes, it seems like Coaster is more value driven...

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  2 года назад +13

      For sure. Coaster is definitely more of a commuter oriented service, whereas Amtrak is more intercity.

      Metrolink continues from Oceanside to LA Union Station. If timed right, you could travel the entire corridor without ever stepping foot on Amtrk.

    • @vinceghio

      Coaster is a commuter rail. Amtrak is an intercity train. However if you have a coaster day pass or monthly pass you can ride the Amtrak to any of the stops the Amtrak stops in San Diego county it’s called rail 2 rail. Any stops after Oceanside you need a Amtrak tickets

      Amtrak also skips a lot of stops (only stopping in San Diego, Solana Beach, and Oceanside) whereas Coaster stops at Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Sorrento valley as well as the aforementioned stations.

      It’s honestly very similar. I actually rode on TRE last weekend to get footage for this channel, and I have to say there aren’t a ton of differences. The major ones are train length and the interior is more similar to Coaster’s old interior than the new one.

      Not these locomotives! All Chargers are Siemens powered, however the SCB-40 makes 4000hp, while the SC-44 makes 4,400hp, and the new ALC-42s make 4.200hp. The numbering in the names represents the horsepower output on each locomotive.

      @Adumzzinthehouse 27 дней назад

      Only San Diego - Sorrento valley has slow speeds. After Solana beach, the Coaster always pushes 90 mph between every station including instances of the train going 91-95 mph to make way for other trains.

    can you get Amtrak points for riding this?
    Edit: 6$!!!???

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  Год назад +1

      I don't think you can get Amtrak points for it as the points system is based on purchases through Amtrak, and seeing as tickets are bought through Coaster, there's no way for them to transfer. That being said, the tickets are valid on Surfliner trains as far as Oceanside, so it's not a huge loss. Also the $6 isn't outrageous, especially considering how far Coaster runs, and that you can technically take an Amtrak train using that same ticket.

    • @JoeHeine
      @JoeHeine Год назад +1

      @@LonestarTrips good answer. 6$ is a deal, the same trip on Amtrak would be like 18$. I think trashing the coaster to Oceanside then switching to Metrolink to get to LA is the cheapest way
