In 2002 Square Enix dabbled in online games for the first time. But after FF11, they decided to triumphantly return to their single player roots, in the process making one of the most prolific games in the franchise. Even becoming one of the first games to ever receive a perfect score in Japan's most famous long-running video game magazine.
This is the final fantasy 12 iceberg.

Just want to let you know ff12 is more then just a reference in ff14 - dalmasca becomes a major part of the story, and ff12's villian, venat, is also extremely prominent in ff14. Fran also makes recurring occurances in the main story. basically, any game related to ivalice takes place on the planet "Etheryis". ff3 also took place on Etheryis. Alot of this is information gained directly FROM ff14, but it does have a serious lack of info on the wikis, due to either it being an mmo, or anyone that IS into the lore of FF as a whole not taking it seriously because almost any/all mmo's have next to no story. Endwalker, the newest expansion, has changed everyones veiw, and ties together a bunch of the different ff games storylines nicely. But yes, a serious lack of documented information exsists - hopefully that will change now that ff14 has become so popular.
My favourite Final Fantasy world by far. Perfect blend of magic and techology and the art style is phenomenal. The architecture, the cities, the lore, the races, the espers although they arent the classical ones are soo good.. Too bad we werent given the chance to explore Ivalice more and learn more about the lore. I feel like there is so much more to this world.. My favourite FF to date
Agreed, i actually prefer these espers tbh!!
hint: there are other titles, which take place in ivalice! ;)
It's my favourite too!
Hey, check out Vagrant story or at least a video on it if you havent before, it takes place in Ivalice despite not being an FF title. it is still a square game though, Also FF tactics A2 takes place in Ivalice and you can get not only all the non human races from Ivalice on your team but Vann, Penelo and Montblanc and some others as playable characters as well.
I know its not much but FF14 lvl 70 Alliance raids are all FF12 themed with classic espers and bosses from it.
I remember when my dad got me FF12 for the Ps2 as a gift. Ever since I saw the Advent Children movie, I became terribly obsessed with FF, and he just wanted to get me a FF game. He ended up getting me the best one. It has colored my imagination and, as a result, my writing. It wasn't until I re-played it for the ps4 that I was able to finally beat it. I still dream with the music.
It’s great but it’s no VIII
"I still dream with the music." What a beautiful sentiment. Well said~
Hug your dad homie 🤙🏼 he deserves it
We are the same bro, took me 15 years to actually finish the story (meaning I just finished it today) and I'm hungry for more! Found it as a kid and none of them resonate with me like this one
did you guys actually beat it or only the story because at this video said this is completely more find all of the marks or espers for the real challenge, I decided to go overboard and get scrivener lol along with the trails
XII's art design was so good. The localization was so strong, too.
I thought it was quite forgettable. As well as the level design/areas
@Mike Hunt I liked the battle system.
The music on the other hand was one of the weakest in the entire series. Speaking of localization the pronunciation of ‘marquis’ is an abomination (it’s a French word- pronounced Mar-kee).
@@Walamonga1313 damn thats crazy 12 is my my favorite FF game ( maybe 2nd favorite behind 6) and ive played them all besides 11 :(
The art bothered me so much I could not bother to even play half the game.
Themes of loss: it's stupid of me to never realized that 😨😨😨 vaan and penelo lost their families, vaan losing his brother. Basch lost his twin brother thru betrayal, and lost his dignity as a soldier. Balthier lost his father who succumbed to his scientific ambitions. Fran lost the trust of her entire clan. And ashe lost her husband in battle. All of them somehow redeemed themselves through friendship, camaraderie, and trust to each other........ It's heartwarming 😭😭😭
Basch lost his whole country to the same empire, twice. First Landis then Dalmasca. His entire backstory is loss. One could even mention that how he ends after the game is about loss as he loses his public identity and has to start pretending to be his brother after the game ends.
yea for sure, as much as I didnt liked the combat system, the story was really enthralling and I cried manly tears at the final cutscene. was a great experience.
Gabranth refers to their homeland Landis being lost too. He joins the empire, with bitterness aimed at Basch. I haven't read up on the whole story between Basch and Gabranth.
I really loved the HD textures of The Zodiac Age. For example, the character models with distort when zooming out the camera. Basch's hair would become cubic looking on the ps2 version.
@@Joe_334 and don't forget vaan's abs 😁😁😁
Aside from Reks, Vaan and Penelo lost their parents to a plague
I managed to save for a Playstation 2 in prison once, I played this game, it clocks how many hours you have spent playing and I invested over 100 hours. I had completed the entire game apart from beating the Behemoth last monster hunt. I didnt know how to make it appear. To do certain puzzles you need to go around the map in a certain way, it was quite complicated in terms of puzzles, I had no access to the internet so had to figure everything out myself. This is a very good game.
I laugh everytime a theory about "our protagonist is in coma/crazy or something and everything that happens is his mind" lol, every game/show/anime/serie have this kind of theory.
Same
I only know pokemon to have this theory, was surprised FF12 had it too
@@joeandrew8752 I believe FFVIII has this theory as well with Squall basically dreaming everything ever since he "wakes up" after his battle with Seifer at the beginning. Then the whole time compression thing at the end apparently loops back to him waking up in the beginning in an endless cycle.
The "it's all a dream" theory is a theory that really robs the stories of weight, imo.

FF12 seems to be, at the same time, regarded as one of the boldest and best FFs, AND most underrated.
FF9 was my introduction to the series and I felt like I was coming into something that was already established, 12 made me feel like it was my FF.
Never gave that much time to any other FFs, but this two I love dearly and haved picked them up multiple times, going through 12 again now.
I remember that FF12 made me question about whether helping Ashe was actually the right thing to do when we learn from Larsa that Archadian emperors are actually elected and not born, at least until Vayne turned Archadia into a full on dictatorship.
I was like hold up I'm helping these royals, marquis and princesses who didn't do anything to earn their title except being born with the right bloodline when the supposed bad guys are actually chosen by the people among different candidates from different houses based on their contribution to society.
Even though the game doesn't in fact give you any choice on what to do and follows a strict storyline, no other FF has ever made me questioned whether I was doing the right thing like that.
Plus Ashe isn't even grateful for anything throughout the entire game and just has an attitude like "Yeah I'm the princess by blood so it's my right to rule all Dalmascans and no thanks for risking your life for me, peasants!" and distances herself from the rest of the crew at the end of the game because she's royalty and they're proles I guess, really didn't like her character.
On top of that you also have the whole 'divine predetermination vs. free will' thing running in tandem with the geopolitical drama which even ends up with the protagonists swapping sides toward the end which results in Venat and Vayne still winning even though they are both killed.
You're not the only one, many times i wanted Basch to straight up kill her because she was a bitch, but at the end of the game, she distances herself from the party to "keep up apparences", she does come back to help the party in the sequel too along with Basch
@@KayderimGameplays there's a sequel?
@@daveeol1987 Yes, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
this is a perfect game, lots of quests, big maps, good story and it actually takes weeks to complete the story. It feels like an MMORPG in a certain way.
I was highly disappointed that Espers are almost useless, you only use them to unlock some licenses
There’s a reason that ffxiv keeps just taking the models from this game haha
@@Omega-jg4oq no you gotta use them for certain situations like one has a party 30 K to every foe around you, use the Big bang attack on low health as well. for the big trails
No idea if I'm alone in this, but when I first played 12 I couldn't help thinking Baosh (spelt wrong I'm sure) looked like James Hetfield from Metallica
I just started a new game about a week ago, you've got great timing on this video!!! 🧡🧡🧡 This has got to be my favorite FF of all time, just the perfect blend of everything for me ❤️🥰
Same here. May Zodiark bless your jouney.
Returned also plus i try this time a platinum run 😅
How long do you play as cloud before you get to play vaan in the new version. I loaded it up wanted to replay it from my childhood and it's totally different
The art style is 100%
I love FFXII.
I spent Hundreds of hours playing that Game.
I loved the World it built up as you got further in your quest.
The Graphics are beautiful throughout the entire Game, clean and crisply detailed Characters and Enemies, and the Musical Score is excellent.
Brilliant...
yessss i still am .... blessings friend
Now imagine Vagrant Story expanded like this. Ples Squenex make it happen.
Also the gambit system is the lazy man's system. You can grind xp while chowing down pizza.
Oh god yes pls
I don't use the gambit system...it's just an option for gameplay
Some fans already accept that FF14 is the expansion of Ivalice world.
Ashley Riot, the Risk breaker and last bearer of the Bloody Sin Sigil, he fought the necromantic forces and saved many all in one night.
Zantetsuken is a reference to only FF8, but not the Gunblade
Alright lol
No mention of Brotherhood either
Final fantasy games never fail to impress me
The Wyrmhero blade is a reference to the Dragon Quest series as it's the blade originally wielded by Erdrick/Loto
Zeromus Summon is a reference to the Final Boss of Final Fantasy 4
I hope one day we can return to Ivalice... Pleaseeeee. I miss Dalmasca, the characters, the story and the iconic Vieras.
If you weren't aware, There's some pretty cool Ivalice stuff in FFXIV featuring FFT and FFXII characters, not a ton, but definitely some content you can youtube.
Well, good news and bad news on that end.
Good news is FFXIV's taken its own spin on Ivalice (both FFXII and Tactics) and folded most of it into the world of Etheirys, with Ivalice being the collective name for all the areas on the southeast part of Ilsabard. You can also play as a bunny if you own Shadowbringers for the females or Endwalker for the males.
Bad news is that it's an MMO and therefore might not be something you're into, and also sales are currently frozen until next Tuesday(?), so you can't get in if you don't have a pre-existing account. Also the bunny boys in FFXIV aren't quite as jacked or feral-looking as the lore of FFXII makes them out to be.
I enjoyed the chill tones of 12 a lot, very soul healing
You commented briefly how the last boss of FF1-3 are here as Espers, but so are the last bosses for 4-5 (Zeromus and Exodus {Exdeath}).
And holy crap, was this video monetized. Popup adds in the video, breaks during the video every five minutes for YT ads, then the actual sponsored content itself. Yeeeesh
Doesn't Zodiark's special attack have him gaining several white wings plus a black one, kinda like Saefer Sephiroth?
My favourite game ever made since i first played it in 2007, absolutely the best and most memorable game for me !
That theory of Vaan imagining the characters is interesting indeed, it could work if the stone he stole made the Occuria possess him, but this falls apart when other characters don't adress him in cutscenes, unless he's that delusional to think he is more than 1 person, but that would certainly explain why you can only control Vaan in towns and interact with other NPC as him
Tell that to the ones who made the theory. I think the one who came up with it needs to see a tonberry.
Lol I was thinking the exact opposite it’s almost a meme theory people have said that Link is actually dead in majoras mask and that ash was in a coma for Pokémon and imagined it and now I hear this theory and I’m noticing a pattern
This is one of few Final Fantasys I have started multiple times and haven't finished even once.
That's my issue with the series as a whole. I've played them all, but i've only beaten FF 1, 4, 7, 8 and 10, 10-2
Why? It's really good... 😅 These were the times i was playing during school break, never connecting with my friends, and just playing games the entire time. Those were the days I was willing to skip sleeping for nights just to grind ff12 hehehehe 😅
FF12 is such a masterpiece and has so much to explore. Like there are 13 Esper, and 8 of them are optional!
I spent the most time on ff12 out of any FF, (not including replays). The side quests were many, some very challenging and I loved it. I remember grinding for hours and I couldn't get enough. Not a massive fan of the story per say, but the gameplay was so over the top good to me it more than made up for it.
Same until I got to to end and they wiped my 120plus hour game file to start over. What the fuxkkk!!!
the story bosses should have been more enjoyable and longer and harder just as the hunt bosses
Shout out to my Dustia farming brothers and sisters!
What’s the highest level you’ve grinded dustia too? 44 for me 😃
The text to speech voice you use is really unsettling
Good video tho
That's not what I recall hearing about Matsuno's departure from the project. I recall he left the project early in because of the changes that were being implemented as he wanted older characters in the game (wanting Basch as the central character), but the heads insisted that they needed youths to relate to that audience. I don't recall a conflict being that Vaan and Penelo were implemented late so much as they were wanted, along with Matsuno not given the control he wanted which had him leave the project early on.
I love this game. Bought it on Ps2 and then PS4. One of my favorites!
I marathoned this game when it came out. And again A year later. and again two years after that. And again six months ago. So good
I love your diction. "Ashe lost her husband and father"
GAME OF THRONES??!
Happy to read you'll be switching back to your voice, I couldn't watch this video because of the annoyance of the text to speech, I'm 1:22 in was about to block the channel recommendations because of it; glad I read the comments though
1:53 about that, on pc there are mods that change the enemies and abilities so that basically allow you to play a new game
Could you do an iceberg video on Everquest?
Yay my Request!
I'm captain Basch!
Don't listen to Ondore's lies!
,from rosenberg of dalmasca
Lmao I forgot about that, what a meme
@@Walamonga1313 -Basch- Meme lives!
I am Basch fon Ronsonberg, of Dalmasca!
Final Fantasy XII is my favorite FF game. It's sad that the story and characters (ie Penelo and Vaan) couldn't reach their full potential, but the worldbuilding and enemy design is phenomenal. Penelo's scrapped dialogue makes sense for why she's so blah.
Also, the Bestiary in Japanese isn't as artisic in writing style and reads more like a textbook. (Source: FF Wiki.)
Yeah, i can't be helped tho since they were overshadowed by Basch and Ashelia's whole plot story. Specially with Fran and Balthier who's always there to save the day. By the end of it Vaan and Penelo was just there but I love them both regardless.
Have you played FF XII Revenant Wings? Vaan and Penelo truly shines in that game since both of them are the main focus. IMO it was a fun game to play in a handheld although it was bashed to death with hate.
@@balloonfiesta15 that's how i how felt playing through the whole game. Maybe they weren't really overshadowed more like forgettable story plot or maybe I've just played so much video game that Vaan and Penelo's tragic story doesn't get me anymore. I still cried when Gabranth died though.
Both Reks and Rasler were forgettable for me as well, I know they were the starting point of the game. Even with their soul or spirit appearing from time to time.
Basch and Ashelia's story plot overshadowed them IMO since throughout of the game it's all about for them. As for the antagonist I forgot what's his face, Larsa's older brother was forgettable as well. Gabranth was cool and he died as he lived a badass.
Balthier and Fran always steal the show whenever they can, heck even Vaan aspired to be a Sky Pirate when he met Balthier.
Eeeeeeef this vid is great not just because FF12 is my childhood game, but cuz I learned some new things about one of my favorite games of all time :000
Finally !!!! LIKE !!! I am waiting Legend of Legaia Iceberg now
remember buying this back in the day, collector's edition tin with dragon quest viii demo, complete with strat guide and art book, too this day i think it's the only one I've 100 percented and you really have to wonder about square's strategy sometimes with nine and ten releasing at the end of console cycles
Actually Basch was originally written as the main character but was changed when SqaureEnix Execs pointed out they wanted a more youthful character to reach their target audience. This was a problem as the role of lead character was written for a specific story, so when Vaan was created as replacement, it shows as he's more of an observer in the game (which I still hate with a passion) than a protagonist. Playing this game as a teenager I always believed the main characters to be Ashe, Basch or Balthier.
Oh gosh, even Fran and Penelo had more character depth than fucking Vaan. You're totally right I always felt Vaan was just kinda...there
It wasn't, there are tweets in 2010 from Matsuno that says that this rumor was a lie, i can't post the links here without having my comment being deleted for some reason but i am sure you can find it.
The main character was Vaan, always, they altered his apparence from a big / strong / old character for what we have now
One of the swords is also the brotherhood sword from final fantasy 10. The water on that wakka gives tidus
FF12 next to FFT was done everything right 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I love this one so much, amazing game
yes exactly good friend
This one and tactics are the best...i dont understand why they didnt reuse the gambit system it was so slick to just run around wrecking everything
This is the most perfect game ever created
Surprised you mentioned Chaos, Mateus and Famfrit but not Zeromus, who shares the exact name of FF4 final boss and Exodus who is supposed to reference Exdeath
My only problem was the way you pronounced baschs name lol. Other than that AMAZING VIDEO.
This game is special to me and so MGS3 because that was the year my son my son was conceived.
12tZA is one of my favs, along with 6 and 9.
Cheers, mate.
Thx man
No mention of zeromus summon?
FF Tactics and FF XII are my favorite games of all time, i love all aspects of these games e the Ivalice raids of FFXIV made me cry, hope we get at least one more game of Ivalice one day!
This FF kind of perfectly does side quest stuff in my eyes. Collecting Espers, doing hunts, the bazaar crafting system, those weather halcyon orb fucks. The combat could of been a lot better if they fixed casting multiple high end spells like scathe and what not. Story is absolutely whatever. Best side content FF.
I once read a comment suggesting that you actually play as the antagonists in this game, hence Cid being a foe and all the espers being based on previous villain bosses or otherwise evil beings.
The one I've been waiting for it will be a good day
I am once again, asking you to do final fantasy 4 and the after years
It shall be done.
@@Maker1 can't wait 😊
Damn the AI voice in this video is actually kinda good
The last true Final Fantasy they have made, since then, they never make this kind of Final Fantasy anymore
I never really liked this on the PS2 but gave The Zodiac Age another try and ended up loving it and finally understanding the gambit system. Ppl bytch about each installment but fail to realize that each release tries a new way to play it. IMO the FFVIIR system is perfect. Anyways I enjoyed FFXIITZA
last time i played through it i made the connections to star wars lol it was funny to think about then you confirmed it here. how strange.
Also i didn't realize how good the reception for this game was maybe i was too young but ffx seemed to overshadow this game all that time ago.
it was always my favorite game in the franchise though and i own the ps2 steelbook.
Loved this!
First it went through the things a seasoned ff12 player does on each play through(dustia, trail, zodiac spear)- to - Creepy pasta-like theories about Vaan 🤯
Amazing content
Love FF12, favorite in mainline series, Zodiac age just made it 10x better.
The first thing that bugged me about this game was those silly arching lines during battle letting u know who u are attacking like it was a tutorial! There is a option to turn it off I think everyone should try it they just seem to give this cheesy arcade/ tutorial feeling
That's not the full extent of what they do, though. They show everyone's target, including enemies, not just the character you're controlling. It's especially helpful to know if one of your party members switched targets bc of non-optimal Gambit setups, just to mention one of hundreds of scenarios. I do get that it may stick out, especially if you're new to games with this type of combat system, but it's just a UI element. Can't imagine it without!
@@robius I'm glad we agree to disagree - I seriously can't imagine going through the entire game with these annoying " indicator lines " on. ✌️
lol, thank you, no sabia que tenia manga, ahora lo sé gracias a tí.
14:05 for spawn him is not a exploit, is the way you can spawn, but if you leave the are without see the exp he get, that is the exploit
When i saw Zodiac job system be available outside of japan , instead of being happy for 12 , I thought "Damn maybe we can get 13 but better".
how would it be better in your opinion?
@@goncaloferreira6429 I think they should put 2 hallways instead of 1
The job system in this game was done well. If you love FFXI like I do, you’ll see a lot of similarities between combat in XI and XII.
10:28 Wait what? XIII-2 also gotten a 40 score? Is it really that good?
Honestly my favourite FF. 7 will always hold a special place in my heart, but 12 is basically Final Fantasy Star wars!
a ff12 fan theory video would be cool
I like ff 12 but there is something weird that happen right after u beat vossler and that is vaan is the main character but the rest of the game is just feels like it’s focusing more on Ash then vaan cause the further u get in the game the more it feels like both vaan and Penelope are just there
Also this is actually the first ff game that I did almost everything in
thank you for the recommendation youtube 🙏
This is literally the only FF I've ever played. I was so op that I could afk the final boss with my gambit system.
That's the problem with leaving up or should I say the difficulty is not balance, the main story bosses should be stronger than you or at least as strong as you, good thing Hunt bosses gives a hard time to deal with them
Oh look. A mental health theory on main characters...... I haven't heard that one before.
Best Final Fantasy. #FIGHTME!!
14:18 this only work in the new version Zodiac Agee
I hated this game when it first come out but once I grew up a bit more and replayed it in around 2015 it has since become one of my favourite FF games!
Why did you hate tho? This game is incredible when you play it for the first time
Title: Final Fantasy 12 Iceberg
Date: this Video was uploaded 12 Days ago
Me: S U S
Best soundtrack of any Final Fantasy.
Maybe I need to play this one.. Only one I never have.
Reks should have been the main character!
Nah, Vaan is fine
Ashe should have been the main character, honestly.
@@FeartheKlown No she shouldn't lol, i honestly dont know what you guys see in her, she's more arrogant thsn lightning
@Dadiris Agrom nothing to do with me, the story revolves around her in a number of ways. Her husband that got killed, she's the last in the line of kings, only she could use the stones, she can see the ghosts that Vahn can, her kingdom being invaded....she's very central to most things. Clearly Balthier is the leading man.
@@FeartheKlown Aye, for this particular story, Ashe probably would have been a better choice for main protagonist. I don't think it would help the story much, or the generally mixed reaction the fans had. But you are correct that the story almost exclusively revolves around her.
But I stand by my statement. Reks was a better Vaan, and for the short time I got with him, he left a better memory between the two. And while Balthier or Basch would have worked as well, I think both work well as older mentor types with different approaches that Reks could have learned from and played off of better.
I don't think that Ashe and her story worked for a lot of players. I know more than a few of my friends were not invested in her tale, and quite a bit of those I spoke to online over the years feel the same. It isn't hard numbers, and I'm sure there are more than a few whom loved the tale. But my point is that you don't find that much division in most of their previous titles. And I think it has to do with the story not revolving around the protagonis (Vaan), but also because there was no clear romance either.
While Ivalice seems to have something against romance, FF 12 was also a mainline title. It would have benefited from following more in its predecessor's footsteps and had the story follow the main character, have him have a love interest or two with their own subplots, and work in a convoluted narrative around that. It's worked surprisingly well for a long time.
And Ashe would have made a poor choice for main character, under those conditions, because she is a widow and still hung up on her dead husband. I'm pretty sure she shared more scenes with Vaan than either Basch or Balthier for either of them to catch her eyes away from Rasler's ghost.
But hey, I get wanting to try something new, they've been trying newer, crazy things since with the rest of their mainline titles. But I've always wondered why people are so adamant about reinventing the wheel.
Iceberg of my favorite game? let's fucking goooooooooooo
I never understood how people get names wrong when a game is voice acted. THEY SAY THE NAMES OUT LOUD.
My favorite ff by far. The characters, the story, everything was perfect. I hope they make a sequel (I'm not going to consider revenant wings lol)
There isn't anything after Revenant Wings other than what happens in Dissidia Opera Omnia
I didn’t know that this came out in 2006. Wow.
weird to hear which final fantasy games were considered perfect in Japan, id place 12 somewhere in the middle. certainly not as good as 6, 7 or 10 but still good.
Just love this masterpiece. E.g. going for all (optional) Esper is always fun.
This game had everything to be the best Final Fantasy ever made but SE had to have screwed it up.
Today Matsuno says he left for health problems but I remember well that at the time, he left for a very different reason.
Elaborate further sensei
this. Losing square´s best storyteller sure hurt the final product.
Which was????
Just now realizing that this channel uses text to speech. Was wondering why there were so many wrong pronunciations of words haha.
So bummed you keep using the robot text reader :(
You forgot the airship Ifrit
I have tried to like and play FF12 a hundred times and I can only stand it up until they get to Nalbina Dungeons every time.
I hate the gambit system, the constant gear checks, random chests, story is boring, etc, but I also hate MMOs
@ Sunrie: I sympathize greatly. It's only after about five years of playing FF 12 that I've finally started taking more than a passing interest in the gambit system. I reckon a Gambit Guide as a supplement to the walkthrough would be most welcome.
Why do you sound like a robot voice to text?
There's some interesting info in your videos, but I don't see how they conform to the whole 'iceberg' thing. Seems like its just a video with disparate facts about the games. Which is fine. But not an Iceberg
Oh wow!
Would love to have another game take place in this world
They had Revenant wings, where some maps were in locations from the ps2 game. I kept imagining how Revenant Wings would have looked on the ps2. The best part is, the party from the last game are reunited with new characters.
@@Joe_334 i meant with game play simalar to FF12 or turn based and being able to explore more of the world
At this point, I'm pretty sure the closest you're getting is the Return to Ivalice and Save the Queen storylines in FFXIV, which was also penned by Matsuno because CBD2 reached out and said "hey want to write more FFXII stuff in our game? We'll pay you" and then he joined as a guest writer who more or less managed to fold almost the entirety of FFXII and Tactics' lore into the existing world of FFXIV, with some changes. But it's also, well, a tab-target MMO.
Cheers, fellow men of culture
11:45 yeah, and now, 80% of people playing this game, have no idea who van is, and most lilly forget his existence
