Do you not understand what makes an MVP? A player who elevates and makes the team better but also being valuable in their own way. Steve Nash brought a suns dead to rights to the 1st seed back to back seasons, Russell Westbrook averaging a triple double with a terrible thunder team to the 6th seed. D Rose who brought the bulls to the top seed. It’s a trend. Luka in no way should be MVP with all of the pieces around him and he’s at the 8th seed. Stop it. its because the way the award has been doled out, it always goes to the best player on one of the best teams in the league. Look at Chuck: he should have won one MVP with the sixers especially in 89-90 season, but his team was never great. He went to the suns, put up lesser numbers than he did with the sixers and he got mvp. Same thing goes with jordan etc. Right now the Mavs arent a good team, and that is hurting Luka

It is quite literally a statistical fact that Luka is at WORST the 3rd best player in the league at the moment. The narrative of him being terrible at defense needs to die considering his vast improvement making him an actual serviceable defender. Luka has by far suffered the most from key teammates being out (Kyrie, Lively, even Exum) compared to the other MVP candidates and that's shown by the Mavericks having the most amount of unique starting lineups in the NBA this year. I agree that team record should be a factor to some degree to prevent players on actual bottom-tier teams from winning the award, but definitely not to the point where one HAS to be at least top 4 in their conference, context matters.

Luka is a terrible defender. Luka ain't no MVP if he cant lead his team to wins. They've just had aa terrible run where most of his teammates have been available. I'm as a big a Luka fan that you'll find but there's things he doesn't understand that's leading to losses that I'm sure he'll eventually figure out and thus collect MVP's on the regular. Too many fools share the same opinion as you when in reality it never works that way unless that team is really poor and that one guy able to get them enough wins to be a relevant team. Just like Russ did in 2017 with Morrow, Roberson, Kanter, Adams, Singler while dragging them to that 6th seed; and Jokic did without Jamal on that 2022 season (before Gordon & KCP got there) and also dragging them to that 6th seed.
That's the only cases I can think of where such anomaly happened. Other than that, it's pretty much players with great stats and/or impact to their teams while that team ended up being a higher seeds (1-3 seeds).

Surely all you need to do is look at the record of when they are playing vs when they don't play? Why does it matter where on the table the team is? If your remove Luka, how bad is that team? Shaq’s right, it’s an individual award, it’s most valuable player not most valuable team, yes you have to consider team performance, but it shouldn’t be the main criteria, otherwise every Boston player is above Luka in the MVP race, if someone averaged 100 points per game and triple double on the worst team in the league and the next top scorer had 20 per game for the best team, the player with 100 per game should win MVP. Obviously I exaggerated, I know the difference is a lot smaller in real life but it still applies, Luka’s individual performances have been better than Tatum’s or Edwards’

In 2022 Luka was 4th in the West and came in 5th in MVP voting behind Booker. So I think it's safe to assume that at SOME point Luka will be a top 3 seed and win MVP, if nothing else because he's never won one. But if he keeps playing like he does, to Chuck and Kenny's point Luka will never be a high enough seed to even really be in the MVP conversation. The only times a low seeded player won the MVP was when Joker and Russ basically averaged a triple-double as the 6 seed. And I do think Luka has improved as a playmaker, but he still has more to go

I can get shaq's case of MVP being individual award but in the NBA the assumption of having great numbers in a bad team means your supporting cast is so bad you had to chuck up alot of shots. Alot of dudes who averaged 20+ on bad teams and then averaged less than 15 when they went to a better team. Not saying that this is the case with Luka but its what the voters assume that Luka's numbers would dip a little on a much better team.

Dallas is 7 games over .500 and 2.5 games behind the 5th seed. If they are a top 6 seed by the end of the year, he should be a top 3 candidate with Jokić and SGA, followed by Giannis, Tatum and Ant.
