- One of the greatest parts of the World Cup is seeing underdog teams go far, or as they are known in the world of football, dark horses. Some of the greatest dark horses in modern World Cup history include the 2018 Croatia side, which defeated Argentina and England on its way to the final, and the Ghana team of 2010, who were inches away from becoming the first African team to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup. But there’s one World Cup team that beat all expectations, but doesn't quite get the same amount of credit. That was the 2014 Costa Rica team, which made the quarter finals of the World Cup. And while that’s impressive on its own, what the Los Ticos team had to overcome on the way to the quarter finals makes their achievement incredible. This is the story of how Costa Rica shocked the world at the 2014 World Cup.

Celso Borges played in AIK in the Swedish top division “Allsvenskan” at the time and was the only player from Allsvenskan who played in the 2014 World Cup. He was a beast in AIK absolutely carrying the team in 2013 after the starting goalkeeper died(rest in peace 27 Turina), he prevented the team from getting relegated that season. He was the light for many fans during one of the darkest periods for the club 2012-2014. Because of this Costa Rica had a pretty large following of Swedes during the World Cup and AIK banners and shirts could be seen while Costa Rica played. And to this day Costa Rica is still supported by many Swedes.
As a Swedish-speaking Costa Rican, that's lovely to hear.
I was in Costa Rica for the whole World Cup (im american). after that Greece game the whole country truly went bonkers.

Costa Rica's issue was that they got scared after the group stage and just parked the bus. If Mexico would have won you can bet ur ass Costa Rica would have attacked the entire game. Had they attacked a bit more they would have probably beaten Netherlands
Costa Ricans were completely tired after playing against greece with only 10 and go to the penalties, if they would beaten greece within the 90 minutes they posibly could defeat netherland
