Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about the history of Pataliputra. Founded by Magadha ruler Ajatashatru, it began as a small fort. His son, Udayin, recognizing its central location, shifted the capital there, solidifying its importance.
Pataliputra flourished under the Mauryan Empire, becoming a bustling centre of trade, learning, and administration. Chandragupta Maurya and Ashoka the Great ruled from here, leaving behind a legacy of power and cultural influence. Descriptions by Greek visitors like Megasthenes mention grand palaces, bustling markets, and well-maintained public areas.
After the Mauryas, Pataliputra's fortunes fluctuated. It remained an important city but faced challenges from new powers. Sher Shah Suri, a 16th-century ruler, revived its significance, but with the rise of the British Raj, its prominence diminished.
Despite this, Pataliputra's historical significance remains. Archaeological excavations reveal remnants of its glorious past, and the city continues to be a cultural hub.

Gandak flows into Ganga on its northern bank, roughly where Patna is located on the Southern bank.
If Greater Patna extends to the north of Ganga in future, then one can say that it is also on the banks of Gandak

Tata financed excavation because he believed in DB Spooner's theory and wanted to establish Zoroastrian-Parsi ancestry to the Mauryan emperors, even going so far as to declare the Mauryan ruler Chandragupta Maurya a Parsi. Spooner's theory hinted that there was a heavy influence of Persian architecture on Indian architectural styles which indicated that Ancient Iranian domination was not limited till Punjab only but extended to eastern regions as well. So no charity or love for India from Tata here.
