Sara at PAW is EXCELLENT. I've ordered mods for my pads from her in the past (knee stacks). All good stuff. As a SHORT Goalie (5'6"), I have tried lots. I like the Warrior Pro knee pads, but they're too long, and the intermediate ones aren't tuff enough. I have settled on the Brian's Pro Int knee pads. Bombproof armor, and fits my shorter frame just fine. The only drawback being the interior is too rough to wear on bare skin. So, undergarment, brians over the top, then a hockey sock, and I tape them one wrap on the top and bottom edge, and they stay in place. Keep up the good work VOG!
playing over 40 years and never used knee pads until this year after a MCL injury - went with the Warrior Ritual X Pro Knee Pad and have been totally pleased. I like how they took some stress off the knee in the butterfly. Never had an issue with them slipping or interfering with my gear. I wear them under my compression pants so they do not move or interact with my pants or pads. Best $100 I spent.
I held out for years not wearing knee guards but as I get older I enjoy getting drilled in the knees with pucks much less. I finally got some a out a month ago and while they can be a little annoying occasionally I do find that I am playing a lot more freely as I dont have to worry as much. It's probably saved a few goals already.
I am a younger goalie (only have played for 6 years) and I always used the thigh pads that came on the leg pad. I never had a problem with these until my 5th year, where I took a slapshot directly to the knee because there was a small gap in the thigh pad. Trust me it was not fun, and I now have scarred tissue underneath my skin and on my knee and I will always have a small scar on my knee cap. So that was it for me just using the thigh pads.
Passau generation 2 knee pads with hockey socks pulled over and clear tape above the calf. They’re worth the price. Don’t skimp on your knee protection guys. The day you take a direct shot off the knee from a slapper is the day you find out if your knee pads save you from a cracked knee cap. Stay away from the flimsy equipment if you’re facing strong shooters.
I'm on my second pair of PAW's, I believe my first pair lasted me 8 years before I decided to buy another pair with gel. I've bought a lot of knee pads over the years and these are by far my favorite. I've used: Bauer (soft foam model), RBK's clam shell, old Coopers with plastic, Viper, Passau, Brown's and Brian's. After 8 years the only thing that was bad with them is velcro didn't grip as much but clear tapped fixed that problem, other than that the product was still comfy and protective. Awesome gear you won't regret it.
Took a puck in the knee in '12 and took the thigh guards off my bauer x60s and ran nothing for a year. Took another soon after and started my own knee pad quest. I'm warrior g4 pros now with bauer supreme maxorb. Affordable, super protective......great movement if you like to move like a robot....that needs to be oiled. Thanks for another great review! Ill check these out. They look a bit like the older Brian's knee gear but better. Ps....you're totally awesome!
Goalie Gare Bear here. I have had excellent results with the following knee pads: Bauer Reactor with Overlap Protective Shield (OPS). I use the great velcro straps initially, with one wrap of pad tape to lock them from slipping up or down. I have been hit in the knees, and the pads worked, and my knees wrote thank you notes to me. They work with both sets of walls I have used, and they worked with my old McKenney girdle, but haven't tried them yet with my new Bauer Girdle. I don't anticipate a problem. These pads are very comfortable, and except if they slip down, I never know I'm wearing them. They help with both dropping into butterfly and with puck impacts.
Thanks for this. I'm a rec goalie who started last year. Was in a scramble to find cheap used equipment( I'm 6'). I decided to forego the knee pads until yesterday...I'm still icing the inside of my knee. This video has been helpful in my research for good knee pads!
I wear compression pants then the Bauer Elite padded Knee Guard, then the Bauer Supreme Knee Guards over top of them. Top it off with a sock and clear tape above and below the Supreme Knee Guard and I'm golden. It may sound like a lot but it's not and doesn't hinder my mobility. I may only be 30 but I've had my fair share of knee issues already and haven't had any since adopting this method. Glad I found your channel last week. I'm enjoying the content.
Wonderful video review. I currently am using vaughn ventus knee pads under my cover sweats. I have used PAW for a few custom pieces in the past and Sara is AWESOME to work with. The leg pads she built helped me transition from the old "stand up" style to the current "butterfly/ profly" style and her stuff was super durable. I had bought said leg pads with the intention to see if i could play with a +3" rise and only planned on 2 to 3 months of usage but i kept them for 3 seasons of 6 night a week play (including summer) . I am definitely going to look into these knee pads. And i hope the hold up well and protect whomever decides to use them
These look great. I use Reebok knee guards from late aughts/early teens. They have a hard cap and it hurts and bruises my knee when I go down butterfly
I was worried about knee guards being too bulky and thus hindering my movement, howeverl, I've been using the Bauer Vapor 1X Knee Guards for 6 months now and I have no complaints about them. In fact they have been good. They aren't too bulky but you feel protected.
Great vid Wayne ! I use CCM Pro knee guards. They're tanks . Bulky yes but they protect . I have an old set of Eagle Pro Sentry pads with thigh boards too . They are a bit short thus the reason I fully protect my knees . I wear the knee guards over my base layer . They are then secured with a hockey sock with velcro tabs to my jock . I wrap clear plastic hockey tape below the knee guards and above them outside the sock . They're not moving anywhere. In the future I hope to get some new pads fitted for my long legs without thigh boards .
just bought myself the new bauer pro knee pad. I had the vaughn slr2 but they were too big for my calves and always sliding down. I will be trying the bauer pro tonight for a beer league game!
I'm an older beer league goalie and been using thigh guards forever. Recently I picked up warrior knee pads. Have to say, these old goalie knees wish I made that switch years ago.
PAW Knee pads. I have had mine for some time, bought them used to try before I splurged on a new set. They have held up very well. Definitely plan on ordering a new set soon
I wear the warrior knee pads that came with my warrior g3 pads. After this video I'm switching to the paws. The warrior knee pads are always sliding and binding up on me. Thanks for the awesome video!!
I’ve used PAW kneepads since August 2013. I have the garter belt attachment and I had tabs to attach to pants if I wanted to try that option. I’ve yet to try them without the garter belt. I also have the gel in the landing area of the knee. They always stay in place and provide comfort when dropping to the butterfly. I wear them over an Under Armor short and high socks. Nothing over them. can’t say how protective they are to puck impact because I never get hit in the knee. Of course if I went without kneepads, I’d get hit in the knee immediately.
Had my pair for about 5yrs. I have taken some direct shots and they definitely save my knees. The only downside that I can report after these years is that there's no way to change out the elastic once it starts stretching out without doing serious work to it
A quick question, How do the PAW pads feel when doing pad slides? One thing I don't like about my Brians Knee pads is that the seem to make me feel like my knee is sliding on the landing gear of my pads.
I wear the ccm knee pads. My ccm knee pads are really big compared to the Bauer or warrior. I wear my undergarments then knee pads with sock tape (clear tape) on the knee pads then I wear socks over my knee pads to keep my knee pads in the same spot.
I thought I would like the knee pads that came with the G4's, and although they are comfortable and very protective, they are also pretty bulky for me liking. I think that I am going to give the PAW knee pads a shot. Thanks again VOGoalie.
Great review. Being an old goalie my knees are in bad shape and my job requires lots of time on my knees repairing HVAC equipment and Appliances. I wear Brian's knee pads and have been on the lookout for a better option. I was considering Passau knee pads but I think I will go with the PAW knee pads. Keep up the great content.
Nice review. I have thigh boards still but was taking shots off the knee more than a few times since I can’t completely seal the 5 hole in my butterfly. Bought Passau knee pads used to try them. Seemed bulkier than I’d would have wanted but I didn’t feel like they were bulky on. Easy to move with them. Never felt a shot again. The Velcro is starting to lose its hold and some rips are forming. I may give PAW a try.
Hyper Hype I really gave the CCM knee pads the old “college try” but that meant wearing my Reebok/CCM pads looser than I really wanted to so they could rotate. I watched Trav4oilers (sp) and saw he was wearing the Bauer Supreme. I asked what he had and he said they are bullet proof and offer a lot of protection and a lot less bulk. I saw the Warrior knee pads and agree they are a lot less bulky. I also make sure there is nothing in and around my knee to bind up when I go to my knees. My Reebok/CCM were second hand and came with winglets (no idea what the purpose is) so I removed them and place the strap from the landing gear to the upper part of my calf to semi lock the padding in place, really don’t see a need for the strap other than having it feel more secure to my leg. I want my pads against my shins and ankle area, freed up around the knee. Sorry for the length of the response.
I wish I had seen this 3 days ago. I literally just bought some warrior pro ones. I'm a little on the fence about, right around the same price too 🤦♂️
I had the warrior pros too. I put them on sideline swap, sold them and ordered the PAWS. Just received them today, Sara let me know it would be a 2 month wait when I ordered. They are worth every penny! Cant wait to play in them tomorrow!
In my experience [especially with the newer gear] you'll want to match makers as much as possible. Ie: I use warrior pants, leg pads and knee pads. The reason that this is important is that the knee pads, leg pads and pants are designed to fit together. The knee pads are actually tied into the pants and fit nicely into the Smith designed leg pads so that the knee pads dont dig into your thigh. I also find that my Vaughn chesty tends to sit high because of they dont mesh very well with the warrior pants. It seems that all of the makers are going that route to keep you using their products exclusively. The worst part is that equipment does not wear out at the same time so unless you really want to replace everything your probably not switching makers.
I wear Vaughn Pro V Elite leg pads and picked up Vaughn SLR knee pads. They sagged a lot and even with the garter, just never felt right. I switched to Bauer knee pads and they feel much better. I considered PAW, but wasn't sold on them at the time. If I purchased again, PAW would be top of my list.
Nice review. I've been using the PAW PKP 1000 knee pads for years. Latest pair (1 1/2 yrs old) include gel, extra breaks on the outside thigh for conforming to my legs and replaceable straps. Can't say enough good things about them. They hold up well (my son is using a pair that are about 4 yrs old and still going strong) and working with Sara is a breeze.
"Bend the knee" and "One knee pad to rule them all" GoT and LotR references in the opening 5 seconds? Strong open, dude! I use the Bauer Vapor 1X knee pads as my daily driver and break out the much bulkier (but bomb-proof) Koho 589 Swiss knee pads when facing high-end shooters who know how to do one-timers.
Oddly enough I have the Warrior G4's. While I do like that they come with their own kneepads, I really hate how the system works together and messes up my drop. So I just use a set of bauer's vapor 1x's and tape, if that seems odd. It works for me though.
I have these same knee guards with the HD Gel/Foam and have gotten dinged just above the knee a couple times. Pretty disappointing, but I still find them more comfortable and streamlined than anything else out there. They dont move around either.
I always wondered if they worked or not. I am a player but I still wanted to know if there safe against a slap shot from the blue line. Thanks for the info and video. Take care. Tim
I wonder if adding hard plastic is an option. One of the reasons I’ve stayed with my CCM’s for so long. I feel having hard plastic and foam under it is more protective. Only downside of my CCM’s is how much tape I use to keep them up; don’t like the feel of a garter belt so I basically tape over the knee pad from lower thigh all the way to just below my knee.
I had an early set of PAW knee pad and yes a piece of hard plastic to dissipated the puck impact would have helped when I took a shot off the knee. Left a red welt on my knee cap, and I wear volleyball knee pads underneath the PAWs. The side protection on the ones I had were weak numerous time while down in the butterfly I had pucks shot low close to the ice hit the inside of my knee. Then the third issue is when dropping to the butterfly sometimes my knee would would miss the landing pad and slam into the ice, unprotected. There are lots of puck marks on them but I went with Passau. Night and day.
If I currently don’t wear knee pads, would you think it would be good to get these? I was looking for the slimmest possible ones I could buy, and I narrowed it down to PAW and GForm ones. I’m thinking about just going with gform because I have never really gotten hit in the knee in the past 5 years. I want something that will give me some protection, but not limit mobility, and have the same “feel” as not wearing knee pads.
That's a tough call. I think it really depends on how your like to wear your leg pads with regards to having a "kneepad" feel. When I strapped my knee sling to the upper calf position on my G4s (effectively providing more "space" for kneepads), I definitely had a kneepad feel. But when I strapped them tighter with the sling around the back of my knee, I didn't notice that kneepad feel as much.
@@VOGoalie One of the reasons I am against wearing knee pads now is because I tried them a couple times, and they felt very bulky, like I couldn't move the same at all. I have been recently been searching for some protection though because next year I will be playing U15 AAA and I don't want to risk getting injured. Do you have any experience with the Gform knee pads? They seem very slim, and are only half the cost of PAW knee pads. However, they are definitely less protective. I'm wondering if that is a good tradeoff to take though considering I barely ever have gotten hit there.
I only used the two Velcro straps with no tape or garters and they never slipped on me. I did use them right up to the very end and wished I had switched to the PAW knee pads years ago!
I've never used knee pads before, I've only used thigh boards. Would you recommend these being my first pair? I'm looking for something light, and unoticable, since I've never used knee pads before, I dont want anything bulky that I will be uncomfortable in, and take my mind off of stopping the puck. Thanks for any info, and I love the videos! Keep em coming!
Personally been using Bauer’s over the last couple years. My 2018 supremes were great, and now I’m trying out vapours without any problem so far. Previously I have used warrior and passaus, and while their comfort and protection were great, they didn’t hug my knee like I liked and the warriors kept sliding down
*dang, that sucks. I just bought a pair of Warrior Ritual X Pro right before my winter season ended. If I knew about these ones, I might have considered looking into them. I probably would have paid around the same price. Nothing wrong with the WR X Pros, they're like tanks, but it's too bulky (I bought online so I couldn't test fit them) and for my level of play, I could get away with a much lighter duty and more comfortable knee pads.*
I got the same ones. They are incredibly bulky. Also they tend to get hung up on my knee strap and fold it under my knee. These look sweet may have to Check into a set
@@goalie2998 *I had to adjust my straps to make them looser to accommodate how much more space the X Pros take up. Although I do wear my straps super loose at the top, and I do the diagonal method behind the knee. I'm using CCM Flex series.*
I’m with you….I hate knee pads, I find them bulky and awkward. Currently using the ones that came with my warrior ritual GTs. Much preferred thigh boards, but not sure any pad manufacturers make pads with the tabs for them, or if anyone even makes thigh boards any more. It’s what I hate most about the equipment industry. Maybe 1% of goalies have to adhere to NHL specs, yet there are few if any options that aren’t restricted to those rules. There need to be some companies that cater to beer leaguers.
Not sure about his but I received mine in August of 2014 and they have just now come to the point where they need to be replaced. They are amazing knee pads.
Question, so I’m 18 and going off to University I’ve been wanting to play y’all for as long as I can remember but never had the money, I finally have the money and I’ve got a few questions. 1. where should I start? My only experience in net is with semi competitive ball hockey, but I don’t think that will translate fully to the ice 2. I’m living in a small dorm, where should I put my stuff? Any ideas? I don’t own a car.
Thanks for your comment! If you're just starting ice, definitely begin with skating. Working on your basic goalie movements will help you so much in the long run. The fundamental premise of goaltending is to put yourself in the right position to make the save and that starts with skating. With where to put your gear... check out my "Last Gear Storage Rack" video. While that particular model might be big for a dorm room, there are smaller compact ones out there. Good luck and welcome to the game!
Hey, first of all, thanks for the great videos! As I’m starting out at a young age of 29 they have been super helpful. :) I’ve always had knee issues (meniscus) would you say that these with the gel or a bigger knee-pads like the warrior G4’s would be better to lessen the impact of dropping into your butterfly? Thanks in advance :)
Thanks for your comment and welcome to the position! While I'm not a medical expert, I think geo options would be the best option in your case. PAW also does custom pad accessories like knee stacks and cradles. If you inquire with Sara at PAW, I'm sure she can advise you what would work best for your knees!
Had them for a few months now. They are totally awesome! Took a couple skates to break in and now they are like a second skin! Thanks for the tip Wayne :)
Thanks for asking! PAW actually offers both Intermediate and Junior sized knee pads along with the Standard Adult size. Contact them for more specifics on the smaller sizes!
Could you do a video on dealing with chirping. I usually don't let it get to me but sometimes it can take me out of my mental state and then I lost my shit and end up cussing someone out or slashing an ankle. can you provide any tips?
I have a few standard replies for anyone who is trying to screen me, especially if they are in real close: 1) "I don't pay for lap dances" or "I didn't ask for a lap dance" 2) "Dude, you farted!" or "Dude, stop farting!" 3) "You can stay there, but the puck will hurt when it hits you" (if the guy is a jerk, I'll modify it to "Don't mind me laughing when you get hurt when the puck hits you")
Not only protects your knee but protects you from Spiders... that's how I will sell this purchase to my wife, lol... Currently I use the ones built into my leg pads... they do the job, but arent very comfortable. I find with more of my gear, due to my size, I end up sacrificing comfort for protection.
So fired up for our collaboration vlog on Tuesday bro! Gonna be tight!
Wait what? I can't believe you are finally doing it!
Totally! Should be a good time!
WHAT!!!!!! OH MY GOD! Honestly u guys are my two favourite RUclipsrs can’t wait 😁!!
Omg can't wait.....watch both you guys for 2 different ideas on goaltending but gonna be sick together!

Sorry for the length of the response.
cw2lido first WHY DO YOU HAVE TO MAKE A WHOLE PARAGRAPH I just woke up......I agree with everything you said tho 👍🏻
Hyper Hype made a paragraph because I’m an analyst, it’s in my nature, training kicked. I’m like a machine!
I’m also slow when it comes to knee pads but if these start to bug you I recommend Bauer x900s there very low profile and protective
Ha, Paul you get me! Thanks for your comment!
I’ve tried the separate knee pads but they always bugged me. I always rocked the integrated knee pads. Just felt better.
thank you so much!!!!! was seriously looking for new knee pads today i think im going to get the pkp1000 pads
Im buying a pair ! I cant find comfortable off the shelf pads. Great review !
Oddly enough I have the Warrior G4's. While I do like that they come with their own kneepads, I really hate how the system works together and messes up my drop. So I just use a set of bauer's vapor 1x's and tape, if that seems odd. It works for me though.
Great review, really thorough!
i use the BAUER X900 but i don't use BAUER equipment except for my knee pads. i use CCM now
I have these same knee guards with the HD Gel/Foam and have gotten dinged just above the knee a couple times. Pretty disappointing, but I still find them more comfortable and streamlined than anything else out there. They dont move around either.
So are you saying it hurts when you get hit in the knee?
I always wondered if they worked or not. I am a player but I still wanted to know if there safe against a slap shot from the blue line. Thanks for the info and video. Take care. Tim
Great continent, And love Deadpool in the background
Keep going Brother
Warrior ritual juniors and they are great
I have the paws too i love them i laced them into my pants with the tabs and there not bulky
Volleyball knee guards is what i use for roller
Did you have to tape them or use a garter belt? Do you still use them?
I only used the two Velcro straps with no tape or garters and they never slipped on me. I did use them right up to the very end and wished I had switched to the PAW knee pads years ago!
I've never used knee pads before, I've only used thigh boards. Would you recommend these being my first pair? I'm looking for something light, and unoticable, since I've never used knee pads before, I dont want anything bulky that I will be uncomfortable in, and take my mind off of stopping the puck. Thanks for any info, and I love the videos! Keep em coming!
Same here. I have 10 year old pads with thigh boards, but don’t fully trust them. Based on this review I’m going to grab these
Personally been using Bauer’s over the last couple years.
These look sweet may have to
Check into a set
@@goalie2998 *I had to adjust my straps to make them looser to accommodate how much more space the X Pros take up. Although I do wear my straps super loose at the top, and I do the diagonal method behind the knee. I'm using CCM Flex series.*
@@AzNightmare yeah i also wear mine diagonally to the calf.
I'm wearing Vaughn v5 pads.
I wear them very loose
AzNightmare I just have the warrior P3 knee pads.... there good
I’m with you….I hate knee pads, I find them bulky and awkward.
Let’s go blues
After last night, looks like it's going to be a series!
I still have thigh boards. Few years ago I had nothing and took a slowish puck to the knee. No fun! Trust me!
Good review! Hows the knee pads holding up after months of use?
Not sure about his but I received mine in August of 2014 and they have just now come to the point where they need to be replaced. They are amazing knee pads.
I played with thigh boards growing up. Sucks the NHL banned them, which caused amateur hockey to follow the same
I have Bauer knee pads
I’ve always used warriors
Hey Wayne, I have had some issues with my warrior g4 knee guards catching on the inside of my g4 leg pads. Has anyone experienced that?
VOGoalie Thanks so much! :) I’ll mention you in my email to them (since I did find out about them from you) :)
VOGoalie just ordered a pair of pads and stacks :) Sara was great :)
Had them for a few months now. They are totally awesome! Took a couple skates to break in and now they are like a second skin! Thanks for the tip Wayne :)
I use the koho revolution 587 not the best but they work, a lot better than thigh pads
im using the bauer supremes they are not the most confident but still not the comfiest
I’m proud to be totally awesome
I have Bauer vapors
Sara is awesome !!!
My son needs to get knee pads. He is 8. His equipment is already heavy for him so looking for the lightest option out there. Ideas?
Thanks for asking! PAW actually offers both Intermediate and Junior sized knee pads along with the Standard Adult size. Contact them for more specifics on the smaller sizes!
great vid. thanks
I wear Warrior g3 knee pads
Vogoalie in the store-ooooooo red kneeeee padsssssss 2 weeks later- I’m gonna make a vid abt these even tho I just like them Bc they are red....
Could you do a video on dealing with chirping. I usually don't let it get to me but sometimes it can take me out of my mental state and then I lost my shit and end up cussing someone out or slashing an ankle. can you provide any tips?
Only slash when the ref isn't looking.
DaFishMan didn’t you see the guy shove his stick into Wayne’s pads??? Wayne gave him the “No one touches the Wayne” headshake.
I have a few standard replies for anyone who is trying to screen me, especially if they are in real close: 1) "I don't pay for lap dances" or "I didn't ask for a lap dance" 2) "Dude, you farted!" or "Dude, stop farting!" 3) "You can stay there, but the puck will hurt when it hits you" (if the guy is a jerk, I'll modify it to "Don't mind me laughing when you get hurt when the puck hits you")
Did you get the gel in the knees pads like your neck protector?
I don’t wear a knee pad though I should because the ones I have move around and they are uncomfterable
? Same I can’t find any comfortable
Could you message me the price man. Might be looking into getting some 🤙🏼
There are lots of custom options available. For accurate pricing, check out the PAW website.
VOGoalie thanks man
Are those the best knee pads ever?
Not only protects your knee but protects you from Spiders... that's how I will sell this purchase to my wife, lol...
Currently I use the ones built into my leg pads... they do the job, but arent very comfortable. I find with more of my gear, due to my size, I end up sacrificing comfort for protection.
Whoever’s in the comments today, what do y’all do to keep your kneepads from falling down, I use Bauer supreme knee pads
Tim-Ate -Oh I use a vaughn specific garter belt to hold up my Supreme 1s knee pads
Calf workouts. Lol
Oh... and I wear socks over the knee pads too. But that’s optional. If you don’t like the socks idea, than clear tape is an option too
Manuel Cruzal thanks
Tim-Ate -Oh no prob
Where can I buy them ?
Thanks for your comment! PAW sells direct to customers so the best way is to visit their website at www.protectiveathleticwear.com
never once wore knee pads throughout my junior career. Too restricting on my movement
I use to be an adventurer like you. But then I took a arrow to the knee.
Lol
What's the matter. did somebody steel your sweetroll.
Baldurs Gate ? ;)
