      Not care of the poor. That was for private charities. Then later central govt gave an old age pension to aged persons of good character. Ratepayers were not a means of social welfare.

      Councils should not be allowed to value property, they are over valuing to be able to increase rates .

    • @socialite1283
      @socialite1283 19 дней назад

      @@nzbrotrev9028 Firstly, councils don't do the valuation. Secondly, it is the relative value of one house compared with another that determines how much one ratepayer pays compared with another. And then, of course if someone pleads poverty the council staff consider their case and they might not have to pay.
      Nothing about Rates is relative to the actual cost of council services. It's all relative to how much money the council staff want to extract from ratepayers so that they can push their pet vanity projects.

    We know there's STILL personal and structural racism within the police; what makes Luxey and his intermediate schooler sidekick so sure there''s no such racism in local wards too?
    That's why local councils ought have Maori wards by default: that structural and personal racism is an ongoing issue to this day, and to deal with the legacy of well over 100 years of such evil nonsense having already made a mess of lives and communities.
    We as a nation of otherwise kind goodhearted folks cannot afford to lose more of our first neighbours to any of that ongoing poor excuse for hate:

    Wellington may be the capital of New Zealand, but its infrastructure is more akin to that of a developing country.
    Council rates keep rising, yet many infrastructure projects are unproductive, dragging on for extended periods and clearly exceeding their budgets. Implementing policies that streamline project execution could reduce costs. Establishing clear KPIs and delivery standards would help prevent overspending and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.

    Central govt should regulate local govt to ensure it carries out publicly available proportionate cost/benefit assessment on each spending line item before approving the expenditure. This will focus spending on infrastructure rather than vanity projects.

    Councils have borrowed money against our rate payments (with the property we own as collateral / as a security) - so now a significant portion of our rates payments are just going towards servicing the debt (interest repayments) instead of actually being spent on things that benefit the ratepayer.... the rates increases being blamed on increased interest costs is proof of this.
    Ratepayers should have the option of buying out the debt borrowed against their individual property, with the result being a reduction (or exemption) of their rates payments - ie. allow the ratepayer to be the lender / shareholder. Instead of being the debtor owing the council money, we should be allowed to be the lender, with the council owing us money.

    Core responsibilities?? Doesn’t that include libraries, playing fields/sports grounds and libraries? Or are they the wellbeing items that councils should no longer focus on. And NSW accountability - that doesn’t seem to be evident with the replacement of the North Sydney swimming pool. No one being held accountable there.

  • @anjoune615
    @anjoune615 21 день назад

    ... 'Rights and responsibilities' is just another b/s slogan from Luxon.
    This govt. has flagrantly dumped water issues onto councils because it doesn't want to deal with them itself.
    ... Most experts think 3 Waters was the right way forward for water infrastructure - it's just that there were some tricky issues around maori land and water rights ... issues that this govt. didn't want to deal with.
    ... ... Govt. debt did go up - hugely - under Labour.
    ... Most of that borrowing was spent on Covid - something Mr Luxon keeps conveniently omitting to mention.
    ... Instead of wasting money on unaffordable tax cuts (- which just so happened to buy the National Party much - needed votes in the election) - they could
    have instead bailed out some of the councils who are now in trouble around the country ( - e.g. Auckland Council).
    ... Patronising councils is not the way forward! ...
