- New Port Maria Market located in St Mary, Jamaica (Caribbean).
The town of Port Maria in St Mary will have a modern two-storey market.
The New Port Maria Market on Hodgson Street, said to be the first of its kind in the island, will accommodate vendors on the ground floor, while the first floor will have shop spaces for rent.
The New Market is to replace the old market that had fallen into disrepair.
The renovation not only reshape the physical structure of the facility, but is also consistent with emerging shopping trends.
A contract valued at $56 million dollars to upgrade the facility was signed at the offices of the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development in April, 2018.
The building of the new state-of-the-art market began in July 2018, following a ground-breaking ceremony in the same year.
Phase one of the major rehabilitation of the market, will be a two-storey facility which includes 55 vendor's stalls, a meat market with concrete tables and stainless countertops.
The rehabilitation is part of a $400-million islandwide project by the Government to improve markets across the country.
The market development programme will be the beginning of the end of the practice of vendors selling on the streets, creating challenges relating to order and traffic management.

Lots of changes since I was there some years ago. Love the idea of a 2 story market. Hopefully the meat shop is also part of that. Thanks for all this info about my parish and Pt. Maria .
Great job on your videos. I am so happy I stumbled across your RUclips channel.

Thanks and welcome.. another Port Maria video coming this weekend
It would be interesting to see what the old swinging bridge looked like, and even more so if it were rebuilt.
The removal of vendors from the Port Maria streets should improve the appearance of the town, and the experience of driving through it.
As usual, nice video of the Parish capital of St. Mary.
The Otram River looks abit like the Constritution River here in Bridgetown Barbados & we also have an old swing bridge in town as well but it has been refurbished & it now lifts to let large vessels across the Careenage
Beautiful, Let hope they keep up the standard…
I hope they use it properly and keep it clean!
Glad to hear to hear that they are taking vendors off the streets. Halfway tree is distressing to see it looking like downtown.
The Government needs to do some sanitation and hygiene training along with the improvements. They have tried to remove vendors from the sidewalks before but it did not work.
Inside the new market looks a bit like Cheapside market here in Bridgetown
Build it and they will come? I hope so, it would be a shame if the building sat there empty while vendors refuse to get off the streets.
Nice market but no car park
Oarking will come! The Town is already congested!
IF IT WAS BUILT WHERE SPACE IS AVAIBLE FOR PARKING, THE SAME PEOPLE WILL COMPLAIN THAT IT'S OUT OF THE TOWN! LIKE THE GOOD BUS TERMINAL BUILT DOWNTOWN KINGSTON!
CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE!
where is the parking area?

Too close to the road, no parking space and a waste of space.
