- Bought this old Jeep with 175k miles and huge engine knock.
To save money I decided to fully rebuild using home tools.
Inside I found 3 bad rods and melted rod bearings.
Parts where hard to find but we puled it off and saved lots of money.
Just to compare, junk yard motor with high miles was $3500, my rebuild cost me around $1,100. Win win in my book.

Now that's a genius way to lap valves! Definitely have to remeber that for next time.
Great video, sir! Thank you!
Good stuff man. What I needed to see.
A friend of mine put his block in an old restuarant dishwasher after half a can of Gunk - it worked for a quick clean up.
😅
Take a look at pacesetter long tube headers with Y pipe and high flow cats. I put that on my 2007 and it helped.
Wish I could pay you to rebuild mine.
I got too old.
Good video !😎👍
Great video. I’m rebuilding my 3.8L ‘08 JK. After new cam bearings installed I lubricated the cam shaft well but it was difficult to get into the fully inserted position and didn’t spin so freely like the crankshaft did. Took some force with a wrench to get camshaft to turn. Was this similar for you?
Yes. It was tighter then I wanted.
Jeep still running so should be ok.
always great watchin you do your thing! where’s the hatch at?!
Gone
Hopefully you can help me. I took the oil pump off to replace it. When I re installed the new one after I torque the bolts, the inner rotor spins freely but the outer rotor won't move. Even when I re installed the old pump, the same thing happens. Is this normal? I torqued the bolts to 105 in-lbs. I've also checked for warpage on the timing cover, and everything seems normal.
I wish I could help you. But I don’t remember how it supposed to be any more. Good luck
Bro did this whole rebuild in flip flops.. Im amazed😂😂🫡
Cool build now I want to build one just finished a TJ I know of a couple JKs broke one 4 door and one 2 door I hope I can score one , Were you able to find decent brand of parts for this parts are hot or miss nowadays , what was the hardest thing to find ?
@@jamesdodson9417 hardest thing to find was a good refurbished crankshaft than rods and pistons. This motor throws rods like no other so crankshafts are hard to find. I got mine at autozone or oralys I don’t remember.
Find something newer with 3.6. Stay away from 3.8. They are junk. Good luck
I did the same thing you did when you disassembled everything, now when I think about putting everything together after putting the cam and the crank shaft and the time, is there any recommendation for the installation of the pistons? I did not mark anything
Make sure to install rods and pistons correct way. Also check piston rings gaps and plasti gauge rod caps and mains. Usually it’s all good but that will give you confidence that is all good.
@@UNIQUEGrills, thank you for the reply. that was the problem that now I don't mark anything and I thought that it was about all of a single position position. I buy all rings and lifters gasket ect
Nice vid. Which part of the engine did you attach the crane to, and how? Cheers
I bolted to top of lower intake manifold.
what engine +lift points did you use when everything was fully assembled?
I bolted to lower intake manifold.
currently doing a rebuild on my '07 wrangler. had a decent knock as well. did you send your block off to a machine shop? my cross hatching in the cylinders is still extremely noticeable
Just hand hone it using drill
@@UNIQUEGrills appreciate the response! Weren’t too worried about bores being tapered etc? Trying to pick up some info so I don’t get ripped off at the machine shop 🤣
@@dorianeady8534 it will be in spec. Your not taking too much off. Been doing this for years. Never had a problem. Keep it simple and don’t over think.
How many miles on it now? Did you do a leak down and compression check after a few oil changes? Did you not machine the heads?
Sold it right after rebuild with the warranty and it never came back.
As always it probably runs great.
174K on my 07 JK. Hope it keeps going a while. If it makes it to 200, I may pull it out and freshen it up. I would rather catch it before a knock develops to prevent metal going all over oiling system and replacements of hard parts like rods and crank. Did you go to any extreme cleaning since you had spun bearings with metal pumped throughout?
Thanks for sharing.
Yah I had to wash and blow off every hole.
Hi, I was wondering which rebuild kit you used?
No rebuild kit. I have collected parts from all over. Auto parts stores, eBay, amazon…
your services open to the public or just build your own cars? looks like you may be in south king county area
Just for me. I don’t work on people cars.
what was your list of parts/brand and where did you purchase? I plan to rebuild my engine soon. thanx
Parts were hard to find. So I have buying all over eBay, Amazon, and auto parts stores.
Good luck.
Amen on the hard to find parts. Shizzzz ! Most dealerships don't even have them after 10 years old, they part ways with most anything to do with em.
Killer vid.
Did you send the Crank out for resurfacing ?
@@wulfclaw4921 Bought one from Oralys as a kit
I’m in dire need of my engine being rebuilt I have a 3.6 L JK 2016
Those 3.6 are good engines. What happened?
@@UNIQUEGrills It has 150,000 miles on it piston #6 is damaged and now has low compression, and won’t start. it is also leaking oil
I like your attention to detail. Unless you left this part out, why weren't you worried about getting your new crank balanced with the pistons and connecting rods? I also like how you removed your radiator core support. I think I will follow your lead on that step.
I did payed a lot of money to get it balanced. Crankshaft came balanced. Rods and pistons machine shop did when they pressed new pistons in.
