I've got another two drives coming I hope adding them won't create the same headache. The Mobile app however is unusable which is a shame.. on login it states the request as illegal and times out. The app then has to be forecebly stopped. I've sent a request in to Devs. I do t understand why my new F4210 differs to that of yours. Thanks my friend, so very happy you enjoyed it, but for an HTTPS prefix, you would have to pay for SSL licensing... maybe I am wrong on that I forget what my Synology NAS at work has, if it is HTTPS or HTTP but I think they leave it more towards your router to take care of the security to take care of everything beneath it.

    Am thinking of buying one of these, so this video was extremely helpful to me, thanks for making it.
    Other NAS reviews I've seen seem to suggest 1gb isn't ideal for RAM and more is better.
    I reckon 1gb is going to be plenty for my home use, my old single bay NAS copes fine with 256mb and has done so for six years without complaint.
    1gb gonna be heaps!
    Can you give some idea of how loud or quiet it is when read/writing please, also do the hard drives and fans stop spinning if there's no file transfer activity?
    Looks like a nice quality unit with the aluminium casing and the brushed effect on the indicator light panel.
    Nice review, big thumbs up!

    • @ThisBytesForYou
      @ThisBytesForYou  2 года назад +2

      Always a pleasure my friend and so happy you enjoyed it. My day job, I am an IT manager and have been a Product Development Engineer for years, I have worked with many NAS devices. 1GB works but is not ideal, its just a little slower than others, the more RAM you have, like in a PC, makes operations faster, in fact a NAS is a PC, just a different operating system.
      As for noise, it really does not get loud at all. Every so often, i will hear a process, the drives maybe writting or reading data, very quietly, when i actively writing data to it, i hear it more but I have to be paying attention to it and there can be no other noise in the room for me to hear it, its very quiet.
      A bulk of the noise will come from the fans but since my house is always in the lower 60's°F, they don't have to work much. The rubber feet are VERY cushy and really help dampen the noise.
      I hope i helped you my friend and thanks again for your kind words.

    Great system for file storage and media, may not play games from it. I have a different system as my Plex media library and these provide a great solution to that use case.

    • @ThisBytesForYou
      @ThisBytesForYou  2 года назад +1

      I probably won't play games off of it, but maybe will try it, not sure installers will be able to understand it but I am thinking will store, edit, and export my videos from here, since it's static and you are getting a gigabyte connection, and you are limited by your storage. I was able to get between 90MB and 122MB's per second on this transferring a 4GB file. If it was SSD's in here, I would be up to 600MB's, should be at least. I think this is awesome, still working with it

    • @ThisBytesForYou
      @ThisBytesForYou  2 года назад +1

      well, as I mentioned in the video, this can host a website but just remember, depending on how good that website is, you will hammer this NAS, keep it very well cooled and keep drives on hand, in case one does fail, think maybe more RAID 6 and thanks so much for your kind words.

  • @SiliconPower74
    @SiliconPower74 10 месяцев назад +1

    Good video, nice see the entire setup.
    However, I have to mention two mistakes:
    1º You cant access the NAS using the USB ports in the back. Those are for external HDD, pendrives or addons. A NAS can only be access through the Network (Ethernet).
    2º The drives you chose are SMR so they are painfully slow in write / rewrite operations.
    The worst part is not the inmediate low performance, but in case the RAID becomes degraded, once you replace the faulty disk, the rebuild can take 10 times more than with CMR disk, usually days.
    This situation puts a lot of stress in the other disks, if another one fails, you lost the data.
    So, for NAS drives, stick with CMR disk only like the WD RED PLUS/PRO or Seagate Ironwolf. In fact, use CMR only for everything.
    If the data is important to you, make backups. RAID is not a backup

    • @ThisBytesForYou
      @ThisBytesForYou  10 месяцев назад +1

      I didn't choose the drives for speeds I chose them for reliability and endurance, still going strong today. Rebuilding, well that's a pain I will have to deal with to trying to save money and keeping quality, that's not an easy thing. And back up, yes it is if you backup, I don't, raid is more of a backup than no backup strategy what do ever, you just actually have to back up which I don't do, this is just alternate storage. But yes, you can use this for back up if you want to, but no, raid itself is not a back up, just a bunch of drives joined together. Thank you for correcting me on the USB portion. And thanks so much for your kind words.

    Defenetiv one step closer to buy a NAS, thanks for a great video
    Please clarify, if I use RAID 5 and have 4X6TB I will have 18TB available and 6 TB as backup I suppose, whats happen when one disk goes?
    Thanks

    • @ThisBytesForYou
      @ThisBytesForYou  Год назад +3

      Thanks, my friend, I use it every day, I edit my videos off it, I LOVE IT. As for RAID5, If one drive fails the volume still operates but in operates in a degraded state (it no longer writes parity information). The important data should be backed up immediately and verified to be usable before any rebuild operation is started. If a spare disk is available, the controller can rebuild the data on the disk automatically. If a hot-spare disk is not available, you must replace the failed disk and then initiate a rebuild. If it's not, buy one quick to replace it.

      Just wanted to let you know that I got feedback from Terra Master. They said that even though it said it would be 1000.0 minutes to sync, that is the maximum the system can go to is 1000.0 minutes. They said because I had 20TB drives, that it could take much longer, which it did! When I woke up this morning, it had finished syncing. Does yours continually make little clicking noises? Once again - thanks for your help!@@ThisBytesForYou

      I thought so but its great that you made sure, and its even better that its done, thats a huge weight off of your shoulders for sure. As for noise, yes, it will do little clicks for ever as data is being processed, it can get very quite, but it will never be totally silent. if you could, since you have already established a communication to them, please let them know I helped you choosing this and getting your questions answered and let them know I am very interested in working together with them. I have reached out, but they have never replied. Thanks so much again my friend and congrats on the NAS, i do all of my video editing directly off of the NAS, its so smooth, and well of course as long as your network connection is smooth, you are good.

    When the disks in RAID 1 or RAID 5 are full i.e. no more space on them, do you have to remove and keep all the disks together or just remove one for keeps and reuse the other. Thanks for your reply.

    • @ThisBytesForYou
      @ThisBytesForYou  Год назад +1

      ummms, well, I am running into that now... its almost full, all the videos I make, take up a lot of space. I dont recommend reusing older disks here, in my case, I bought 6TB disks, I will buy larger disks, then when I have all of the disks I need (so for me its 5, but maybe your raid array is only 3 disks) I would remove 1, pop in the new one, and let the raid take care of it, which may take a few hours. When thats done, remove the 2nd, and pop in the other and so on. I will make a video when I can afford to buy more.

      @@ThisBytesForYou Thanks for your very prompt reply. Just to make sure I get it: If I have 2 disks in RAID 1 and they are full (no space left), I can remove and keep1 disk with the data and replace it with a new disk to pair with the 2nd disk in the bay. If this is correct, can I read the data on the removed disk by inserting it alone in the bay or just how can i read the data on this disk? Thanks.

      @ThisBytesForYou  Год назад +1

      @@user-js1uf4jb4m RAID 1, also known as disk mirroring, creates an exact copy of data on two or more disks in the array. When one disk fails, the other disk continues to function, and the system can rebuild the array by copying the data from the surviving disk onto the replacement disk.
      To replace one of the disks in a full RAID 1 array, you will need to follow these steps:
      Back up the data on the RAID 1 array to an external device or another storage location, as a precaution.
      Remove the disk you want to replace from the RAID 1 array. Make sure to power off the system before doing this.
      Insert the new disk into the empty slot in the RAID 1 array.
      Power on the system and allow the RAID controller to detect the new disk.
      Initiate the RAID rebuild process using the RAID controller software or BIOS. This will copy the data from the surviving disk onto the new disk.
      Monitor the rebuild process, which can take several hours or more depending on the size of the array and the speed of the disks.
      Once the rebuild is complete, verify that the RAID 1 array is functioning correctly and that all the data is accessible.
      This is usually how it works,... but that all depends on your controller as well, I can't tell which controllers work how, but this should work for you.

    is there is a way to start a raid 5 array with one drive and copy over data into the array until i got 3 drives in the array (to fit the requirement)

    • @ThisBytesForYou
      @ThisBytesForYou  Год назад +1

      saldy no, it is not possible to start a RAID 5 array with only one disk. RAID 5 requires a minimum of three disks to function properly. In RAID 5, the data is striped across multiple disks with parity information distributed among them. This allows for increased performance and fault tolerance.

      So it sounds like maybe you are on a different subnet, wifi vs Ethernet might be different. See what ip the nas has and what ip your PC has. For example, 192.168.1.1 is different from 192.168.0.1, so they can't talk. You will need to change the IP of the nas which means you need to change the gateway and aubnet as well.
