    Astarion can hide both as a normal or bonus action. So you can all in one turn:
    1) make sure he's out of enemy sight (hold shift and avoid the red spots)
    2) hide using a BONUS action
    3) sneak attack using action.

    16:50 Hidden is a status effect. If you are hidden it will show on the side of the chatacter portrait. What makes you confused about Astarion is that he has BOTH the option to hide, dash and disengage as Actions AND Bonus Actions. And just because its a Bonus action you shouldn't just leave it for later in the turn. If you are already well positioned: use Hide as a bonus to gain advantage on a ranged attack, THEN Attack, so you have advantage and can Sneak attack. Repeat on next turn. You should really read his subclass abilities again, because I see you making very little use of his Assassin features, or just change him to thief so its more straight forward and you don't have to think so much

    • @nickrubin7312
      @nickrubin7312 2 месяца назад +3

      Yeah, it is probably my favorite thing about Larian's approach to cRPGs starting with DOS1, incorporating immersive sim elements and allowing emergent gameplay to shine. After some time with the game it just clicked for me that "yeah, this is the best thing about BG3", probably as well as "rewarding exploration" (and honestly not many party-based RPGs, even any, roll with this kind of appoach to gameplay)
      them actually doing some narrative and companions with DOS2, and especially with BG3, is a more typical party based RPG/cRPG experience, and DOS2 wasn't even that narrative heavy, even tho it had great companions or more of origin characters tbh (I would say still that there is more to narrative engine and its flexibility to player's whims and wishes aka player agency that gives BG3 some gloss, as well as character writing and performances, rather than generic high fantasy/heroic fantasy story)

    18:31 you can use sneak attack as many times as you like as long as you qualify for it. You either need advantage (which you can get by pressing the Hide action or bonus action while out of sight) or if there is an ally next to your targeted enemy (which doesn’t give you advantage but it qualifies you for a sneak attack)

    • @Rocker4JCforever

      That was because the gloves count as Medium Armor, so it negated the Unarmored Defense feature. If Karlach was also wearing a set of scale mail, her AC would be higher than without it, and she could wear the gloves, too.

    I don't know if someone gave this tip already but if you press C you and your party crouches. You can all sneak up and suprise attack the enemy. It means you have a whole round where you all can attack before you go into normal initiative.

  • @nickrubin7312
    @nickrubin7312 2 месяца назад +19

    Hey, congats on your first TPK xD
    "We don't have ranged people with us" - Astarion is right there ;), and just like everyone else, everyone can use ranged weapons, even Ranger class is not necessarily a dedicated ranged person.
    Not having a dedicated caster on the other hand, and I include Clerics like Shadowheart in this category, this could be a party composition weakness. But having a dedicated archer is more or less irrelevant, especially when you have a Rogue in your party, which is the best class if you want dedicated archer, as well as lockpicker, trap disarmer, dps pary member...
    To sneak like you wanted on Gnolls, which was a good strategy, to come from the top, and kind of worked, party group sneak would be extremely useful, and checking lines of sight where you walk (red areas you see when you press shift), so you want to trigger the fight. Btw, it is also great to start the fight, if you are the one who starting it, with Assassin Rogue, because they get their action point back and will go again (with high initiative). Unless, ofc, you just want to throw a Fireball at people or something, better than some Assassin's sneak attack ;)
    That was the ideal spot to shove them down when they come to you.

I'm playing as a rogue/fighter, and, as others have probably mentioned, you can have a lot more fun with Astarion by leveraging his sneak attacks. Rogues can hide as a bonus action (thus gaining advantage), and sneak attack also works against enemies who are threatened by your adjacent allies. In general, you can gain a strategic edge before a fight by hiding your companions.

    Probably because you haven't struggled that much yet, but you pick a lot of items that you don't look at. I.e. in that Gnoll fight you could've shot some of the magical arrows with Astarion. A lot of them have AoE damage. You have cool potions and elixirs with long durations. Scrolls. You could have poisoned your arrows. You have found a few good items as well. They are the things that will give you an edge, combined with the correct usage of skills at the right time.

    Don't forget to rage (frenzy) with karlach. That should be the first thing you do with her. she'll do more damage and it halves the damage she takes. Astarion needs to "cunning action: hide" to gain advantage. Be careful not to do the regular hide because that one costs an action instead of a bonus action. Shadowheart would've been good during the gnoll fight. Cast sanctuary on her and then use her to heal the party while she cant get attacked. Astarion and Shadowheart are both pretty much staples in my party sind they are really useful in and outside of combat.

Another old, stereotypical vampire thing is that they can't cross running water (i.e. a river), hence the wading comment. 43:50 That's a HAND crossbow. It has the Light property, meaning it can be dual-wielded with another light ranged weapon (probably another hand crossbow lol).
    For crossbows, you generally have Hand Crossbows, Light Crossbows (not actually light) and Heavy Crossbows. Bows only have Shortbows and Longbows. Heavier usually means more/stronger dice on the damage roll, but needs a different proficiency to use. And they also give different abilities.

    A few tips that might be useful
    -Before entering combat party can sneak and attack by keeping away from the red detection zones this effectively gives you an extra turn since it’s treated as a ambush
    - Astarion is a rogue so a good way to use him is hide before entering combat sneak attack and hide again using a bonus action
    - Also from what I remember you can only have 4 inspiration points at any given point so feel free to use it when you have 4
    Most importantly though there is no wrong way to play this game, coming up with unique solutions to different encounters combat or otherwise is highly rewarding. So my advice just keep experimenting

    Stealing tips:
    - you can preview npc's detection zone before sneaking by holding SHIFT
    - stealing is easier in turn-based mode
    - do steal while in sneak
    - get out of there quick once the deed is done because NPCs do notice quickly ... as you found out here

    Some small tips:
    * If you want to hide in order to steal something you can try entering turn-based mode. Hide is a status, and anyone who has view of him will roll a dice to determine if they spot him or not. The turns go pretty quickly in real time, but switching to turn based mode is a lot more manageable. And you can tell when they'll be able to have a chance at spotting him better.
    * As a barbarian, you should definitely be using Rage on Karlach at the beginning of all your fights
    * You can get a sneak attack off with Astarion by moving/hiding with your bonus action first, then attacking with the action second. Or, you can just move another character into melee range, and that gives you advantage on that target with Astarion.
    * If you really have nothing to do on a bonus action, using some kind of health potion is a good option. You can throw it on another character instead of your own. Or you can put poison on your weapon before using it, or throw some of the stuff you have in your inventory like a grenade to damage enemies (set them on fire, etc.) Doing nothing with it is a sign you probably could have planned the battle better.

    The great storytelling is shown with this gnoll leader. A tough fight, but with a little mindpower it becomes a cakewalk. This is the dilema between using the Illithid power or fearing them for being... alien... tentacle -worm thingies. Especially so, if you now nothing about the mysteries of baldurs gate.

    How stealth works is that you use hide action (or bonus action for rogues) to enter stealth. You will stay hidden for as long as you stay out of sight (being in stealth or, by default, pressing shift) or pass through a vision cone while in shade and succeeding in a stealth saving throw. Being within line of sight while in a well lit area or if the character looking at you has dark vision will make you lose stealth immediately. You'll know you are hidden if your character has the hidden condition. Doing anything without being hidden will be noticed by nearby npcs even if they're looking in another direction.
    Also, rogues can also use their sneak attacks without having advantage if you target enemies in melee distance of your allies, thus being distracted. That info is a bit hidden because hovering over the tooltip for sneak attack only shows a truncated version and you'd need to use the inspect feature to reveal the full description. It's unfortunate that that's how it works but if you look carefully, you can identify similar shortened description by a symbol of three dots following the description text.

    Since you mentioned Astarion's story being like Karlach's:
    That's what really made me start loving the game. The writers did a good job I think of really weaving in the theme of control. Wyll is a slave to his contract with Mizora, Astarion was a slave for the Szarr family, Karlach was forced to fight for Zariel, Shadowheart is a devoted Cleric that had some of her memories surpressed. And then of course you all have this Mind Flayer parasite that allows you to exert control over others, to the point of being able to convince a Gnoll to literally eat itself to death. It's such wonderful storytelling.

    • @nickrubin7312
      @nickrubin7312 2 месяца назад +1

      I mean, you're correct and agreed, and that's just Larian's trifecta of themes, even from DOS2
      - power (or control, however you want to call it, but in many variations, like physical or power over others, or just the idea of power, I mean this is one of the main tracks in BG3 "Power")
      - survival (what you're going to do in order to survive, would you side with a "monster" if it means living another day)
      - trust (self-explanatory given how interactions with companions go, even in this EP it is the matter of trus)
      through these big themes they explore other sub-themes (again, same as DOS2): cycle of abuse, society/religious dogma's, prejudice
      it is just cranked-up/amplified in BG3 to 12/10 in comparison to DOS2, and just better written and performed
      and they also create Faulkner's "human heart and conflict with itself" as branching for almost every "main" (aka origin) character

  • @nickrubin7312
    @nickrubin7312 2 месяца назад +5

    Hiding. When you're not in their line of sight (red), like the tree breaks their line of sight, you can hide. Better to use cunning action hide for this since it is a bonus action. When you go in their line of sight you have to pass a Stealth check to stay hidden. In this particular case staying behind the tree doesn't mean you're hiding, but they can't see you behind the tree (not in their line of sight), so you can use Hide (again, rogue specific bonus action), and perform Stealth Attack every (!) turn. Even if you cross their line of sight, you can still pass the stealth check and stay hidden, thus you can still use Sneak Attack. However, attacking usually reveals you. Typical rogue turn is either using the fact that enemies being engaged with friendlies and thus threatened to use Sneak Attack, or find a spot where you're not in red (in their line of sight), hide, sneak attack.

    I won't rest until you see this... But please check your settings to see if 'karmic dice' is on. It is a shit setting idk why it exists, but it usually gets auto turned on, it makes rolls biased... Basically, if you roll high too mcuh you'll be forced into getting lower rolls for a whiel and vice versa (In combat and out of combat. Which is why you may be missing a lot). this is the samee for enemies, meaning rolls end up barely having actual 'luck' in it.

    Little tip : the strategy with Astarion is to hide with the Bonus action before using the sneak attack. You know he's hiding in battle when you can see the large red area. When you enter in the area with a character who's hiding, you have to succeed a stealth test to stay hidden.
    You can also sneak with other characters before entering battle so you can surprise the enemies and attack first, which is a very good advantage in battle.

    Level 3 is indeed a little low for this fight. Those gnolls are a lot more difficult than the gnoll hunters near the street. Also they have that sub-boss (Flint) around, which you have forced on your side with illithit powers.
    I normally wait until level 4 for this fight. Those gnolls are no goblins. This "soul numb" is really a bad weapon they can use against your party and they have also other special abilities.
