it annoys me when people mention the chili peppers in the same breath as the foo fighters, since the chilis have been at it since 83 and spent 6-8 years (depending on how you look at it) in the underground LA scene, while the foo fighters started in the mid 90s and shot up immediately. the chilis have definitely worked hard and came from the underground so it's annoying when people dismiss them as another mainstream radio rock band. they never chased the mainstream or sold out, it just came to them.
nothing can be said more perfectly about the chili peppers, they have been through a lot of shit over the years and took them a while to get to where they are today. They are true musicians and amazing in their respected instruments, to them be compared to the Foo Fighters is an insult. Not to shit on Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl but they are your average radio rock band, calling the chili peppers another radio rock band who are still riding the high of their 90s success is nothing more than a dumb fucking comment
Who cares, it's where they come from, or have lived most of their lives, and are very influenced by it. They aren't your songs, you like them or you don't, that's it.
honestly, on this album I think he's shined brighter than he has in a while, with very heavy, funky drumb beats, that carry the beat well, but shine in their own right
A 5 OUT OF 10!? Jesus. I personally felt as if the album was really good. Maybe 2 songs didn't sit with me well, but stylistically, overall, the album was fantastic. Not scattered what so ever, but a different sound, that works well with the guys. They expanded into what I think is a new Red Hot Chili Peppers.
No doubt!I love these guys...even when I think I do not like an album,I wind up loving it!HARDCORE fan since mid 80's!They just continue to evolve and don't give a dam bout crics!I wonder even people know of the 2 yrs they took off before this album and how flea went back to school and took music theory hince the piano influence.Alot of these songs he literally wrote on the piano, played it for the band and they converted it to the songs they are. They are on my Mt. Rushmore of greatest bands ever!RHCP 4 LIFE!
I thought I'm With You was a solid album, definitely not their best one, but still good stuff. Only song I don't care much for is the one you brought up, "Dance, Dance, Dance". Any of the songs from I'm Beside You would have been better on the album than that one. But I'm one of those hardcore fans. I love RHCP, whether it's their old funk-punk stuff or the newer more melodic sound.
Love this album and personally didn't think it was scattered at all. The whole album for me has a very light warm pop funk sound. Though its not their best, I do like this album a lot
Listening your opinions really frustrate me...like in every single review, but I watch them anyway. How do you manage this? And will you ever like anything?
I love the way they have been writing songs from albums. They go into the studio and just mess around with different ideas. Record like 30 songs, only put 12 on the album. It has a all over the place feel, but that is what I like about the Chili Peppers. To me, each song has its own personality.
The Bruce is loose This album is definitely different than Stadium Arcadium. SA is far better than I'm With You. Trust I am not some Josh Klingohffer hater. I love Josh and his band Dot Hacker. The guy is amazingly talented
The Bruce is loose Yeah he mnost definitely does. He essentially is my favourite part of the album. I love the backing vocals and guitar pieces. My fav. song is by far Meet Me At The Corner which I think might be the song josh had the most influence on, if it isnt entirely "his" song
+The Bruce is loose That certainly has a lot to do with it, but, in my eyes it's less "just because he left" and more that you can hear a distinctive difference in the songwriting without him. It just has less soul than their other albums, and, having a new guitarist maybe they didn't really know what they were doing yet with that current lineup, though that didn't seem to happen on Mother's Milk when John was new, or even really on One Hot Minute when John left. Personally, I'm expecting a much more put together album next. They will (hopefully) have figured out more what they're doing, how to work with, and have a more developed new sound working with Klinghoffer. That's just my two cents though.
+Peter BensenYou can totally feel a difference in song writing, yeah, but that doesn't mean it has no soul. it means it has a different one. Though I will agree on saying that if they ever release another album that one is going to be better than this one.
fleas... basslines... DUMBED DOWN?!?!?!?! Basphemy!!! You must've skipped through the album huh? missed factory of faith, rain dance maggie, and the montrous ending to brendan's death song he didnt "dumb" it down he just didnt slap the bass to make it HARD he went for a more smoother groovy sound not a DUMB sound okay bruh
wait- the bass was dumbed down, tony fantz? idk man its super heavy- simplified melodically maybe. but the balls sewn on to fleas bass are audible- they recorded that thing right. No dumb down- dumbed up?
Josh Klinghoffer is just an incredible musician. Someone who has brought a lot to music in the past couple of years with another group he's the frontman for named Dot Hacker. Dot Hacker is different music and I feel they are doing something completely new. Either way, Great musicians and If you are interested check out one of their LPs such as "Inhibition" because they are doing something completely original with music and I just love it
Very good review. The album was a bit of self indulgent. I think it's a musicians album and will be greatly appreciated by their peers and students of music, as you really have to attempt to play it live to truly understand how complex and difficult most of these songs really are. I think most die hard fans of Blood Sugar era will again be disappointed but those who liked By The Way will be thrilled. Anthony's vocals were pushed harder than any other album, Josh's playing was a big surprise
I loved this album, even though it is not my favorite RHCP record. But I think it is great, different, and if you get to listen to the singles that came after this album I think you may get to know some of the best work the band has put out yet.
Thanks for reviewing the album Anthony! Though I respectively disagree, I'm really loving the new album, much more than a 5/10. I think Josh filled his role extremely well and I'm glad he didn't try to be Frusciante. Plus Flea and Chad are mixed so loud in this albums it sounds really great.
This was probably the first review I saw from Anthony back in the day, as this was the first album rollout I was here for. Bought the deluxe edition of their previous album at an FYE around late-2008 at age ten (still have the shirt). Fast forward almost three years later, I downloaded the entire thing off of iTunes. Listened to it and thought, "this is great and all but this wouldn't feel that out of place playing in a dentist office". Their playing (I felt) was a bit more sedate, even compared to songs like "We Believe", "Desecration Smile", "Strip My Mind" and "Make You Feel Better". There were less hooks and Anthony's voice on "Monarchy of Roses", in particular, are noticeably autotuned.
I am definetely not crying over J Fru leaving, his solo stuff is s gift from the Gods. I ve been listening to albums like The will to death for years and every single time i get an eargasm.
As usual, great review. And I don't care what device you film your reviews on, keep up the good work. Let Cal review an album, he's got some sweet reviewing chops
First review video I've ever seen of this album. I'm a long-time hardcore RHCP fan, and that being said i think you did a wonderful review... very reasonable! You got a new subscriber!
I'm glad you were positive with this though Anthony. I guess I do fall into that "hardcore fan" category, despite only listening to them intently in the past few months.
No mention of Factory of Faith? That is obviously a stand out track, with fantastic guitar work by Josh. I would have mentioned that. But pretty spot on on the love/hate. Definite highs and lows with this one. Still bought tickets for the tour however. Oh and Police Station is another great one.Good Job. Feeling a high 8 to soft 9 on your review.
I agree with most points in the video. They kept their style, they experimented, but it's a half-assed comeback album, especially with easy and accessible elements, and name of "Dance, Dance, Dance" threw me off completely.
I'm really enjoying this album. Josh's guitar is a big highlight for me, I love the new dynamic it brings out in the band. I do see a lack of their more fiery songs, but I think their more subdued material has just as much impact. The album as a whole has a 'doing more with less' feel to me, while still having a lot of depth, which I like a lot. I've loved everything they've put out since Californication, (Stadium being my favorite) and I'm With You is another great album
Do not review The Getaway. I am a longtime fan of the Chili Peppers and even I was sincerely let down by this new LP. They have gone way too far in simplifying their sound and it makes me sad to see how poor their new material is as a result.
Anthony, I'm begging, please review some Typhoon. Either of their albums. "Hunger and Thirst" is an epic LP with some of the most unique dynamics I've ever heard. Their EP "A New Kind of House" is haunting. They will be coming out with a new album soon, so if you don't get around to reviewing either of those old albums maybe check out the new one. Love your reviews. Thanks.
the first few times listening to this album i really enjoyed it. and i do still enjoy this album but i find myself revisiting their older work alot more. i actually like josh on this album and although john was a very important member for the band, i think josh has been able to fit in well with the bands sound. also they were fantastic live when i saw them last year, and their new songs sounded just as good live to. i think this is a good album, i just prefer some of their earlier works ^_^
Hardcore fan.love it!!cant wait for their next 2 albums.it can only get better and more consistant.love john but now we'll get more john solo stuff and josh is a phenominal musican
Liked the song you linked, but I haven't been much of a fan of their music since I was a kid (I used to blast their cassette tapes on my boombox too so high5 for those nostalgia points). I don't think I'mma bother with this album honestly. If I wanted to listen to some RHCP, I'd go back to Californication or Blood Sugar Sex Magik, ya know? Solid review though man.
what up with the green screen? Also thanks for reviewing this,I don't even like the RHCPs that much but I think it's interesting to know your opinion on the big releases.
This is a great album. Its never been about profound lyrics, as much as the sounds of the words. If that makes sense. Kiedis is an amazing vocalist, no so much a poet. Wonderful ear candy and overall a great jam from start to finish
I really liked your description about underground vs mainstream music. It's true you either LIKE IT or you DON'T LIKE IT. If only all people could like this and not get upset at other people opinions.
This album is a new beginning for the RHCP. Although I don't LOVE it, I have lots of faith in Josh for future albums. He is a wonderful artist. Why didn't you mention josh's singing on meet me at the corner? That's the highlight for me!!
sometimes you just take the words out my mouth. totally agree with what your saying. 15 years ago i would have been lining up in the shop to get a new RHCP album. now ive just kinda grown out of them, and moved on to pastures new.
While i haven't been a long time fan, rhcp is one of my favorite bands of all time. I'm absolutely in love with albums like By the Way, Californication, One Hot Minute, and BSSM. I'm With You brought a little bit of a new side of the band, and I can't say that I really enjoyed it all that much. I felt like it was missing something outstanding, just like you were saying how this album lacks monster guitar from Frusciante or funky bass lines from Flea. I think I'd give this album a 6/10.
Although I agree with the overall verdict of the review, I have to say Did I Let You Know is in my opinion one of the strongest tracks on the album. It has a very rich, laid back feel that I love from the Chili Peppers. And Anthony's vocals are really powerful on that track.
I'm a younger RHCP fan (followed them since Californication) but I like the experimentation on the new record. I think the biggest problem with their last album was the formulaic nature of each song. So I welcome the new flavors, influences, and structures on "I'm With You". The only major bone I have to pick with you is why do you have "Did I Let You Know" as your least favorite track? I personally like that track and think "Annie Wants a Baby" and "Happiness Loves Company" were weaker songs.
My favorite album by them to be honest. my favorite tracks were Ethiopia, Did i let you know and Police station. all hard hitting and emotional songs with well written lyrics
For me, the length of time between Stadium Arcadium and I'm With You is what made I'm With You so overrated. Had IWY been released 3 years after SA then I think the reaction would have been much angrier. Fans were starved of new RHCP music and anything tastes good when your hungry enough. Brendan's Death Song is outstanding but aside from that one song the album reeks of average. RHCP peaked at By The Way and will never reach those heights again.
i dont mind it. i think this record was good, but when ur in a relationship with the band which is good and strong then ull love all their songs. i think now that they are older, they've forgotten about their youth and the ups and downs of being young. i think next record they are going to have to surprise us. this could be a build up to something we would have never imagined possible
I watched his review of The Getaway a couple of days ago and he basically said the same thing... I know that there has to be subjectivity, but still have to be objective to a certain extent. Just the fact that you said that it's "scattered" all over the place and remembering that it doesn't have the same feel as the older album is kind of what makes it great. As long as you can hear Flea's ripping bass and Chad's awesome beats, then they're still relevant to what they did before. They're just exploring new directions to keep being relevant and not redundant like Pink Floyd, for example. The latter having done and redone the same theme over and over (loneliness and solitude - very depressing) unlike the Chili Peppers that, yes, sing a lot about California only because it's a big part of Anthony's life... so haters has to really get over that. I'm With You is a solid 8 for me. I know that it's not their best album. That title belongs to Californication - undisputed greatest album of all time for me - but it's still pretty good.
@bceltics0404 True, and it's especially brought out by the fact that Chad and Flea seem to be sticking with the same format, not really adjusting to John's leaving yet. I've still got faith that their next album could be an entirely decent release, an 8.6 or so, if they could just stop trying to morph everything into a pop song and get used to the fact that John isn't there anymore. I mean, create something entirely new so that he won't be expected. Just my take. JOHN, NEW ALBUM... sorry
From what I've heard of his playing, I like it, it's different then John, and different then Hillel and different then Jack and different then Dave and different then whoever else they had in the band. A new guitar player for a new album, what more could be better?
The problem with this album is that everyone has to compare it to the Chili Pepper's old albums, and clearly it can't be done because of Josh added into the group to replace John. No one gives Josh enough credit for having to fill in John's shoes, which is really something no guitarist on earth can do. It's Josh's first time as lead guitarist for RHCP, give him some time to adapt to the changes. It will be interesting to see over time how he will grow.
I'm only 14, but i've read anthony's biography "scar tissue" and I've listened to a good bit of their music, and i agree that it's not as good as their other stuff. Although, i don't mind the scatter brained stuff. I really liked the strokes' album "angles" and i feel like if you have a scatter brained album it's alot more fun and experimental, which i like a lot.
I was skeptical about this album since I listened to a couple of songs and didn't like them. I decided to give it a chance and bought it a couple of days ago. Sure, it isn't mind-blowing as Mother's Milk or OHM but it definetly stands its ground as a worthy RHCP album. I'll rate it 7.5/10
I'm in love with this album. However i'm not looking for the classic RHCP sound, now i'm listening to a different band; A band with Josh. People seem to focus too much on comparing it with their work when then had John, when if course it'd be different. There's no such thing as two artists who can be the same.
It's normal to change their pace a bit more since they're getting old and got a new guitar player. As an hardcore RHCP fan I liked this album but certainly their worst since blood sugar sex magik. It has great songs though, like Meet Me At The Corner, Maggie, Ethiopia, but it also has songs that I hate like Goodbye Hurray, Happiness loves company, police station, dance dance. 6/10 IMO
It's hard having to disagree with a band you've loved for years. I know the feeling all too well. And I can't blame you for being honest. That's what we watch this stuff for. At least those who disagree with you can appreciate the fact that you're not trying to be a dick, you just didn't altogether like it. At least you try to be constructive and that's pretty cool. From what I've heard of it it was alright. And, yes, Sunn 0)))) does kick ass!
Btw, Cal Chuchesta's in depth background of the band revealed so much stuff I never even knew about the band. You really should let him review an album.
So Anthony, just wondering, how many times do you listen to a record before you decide you like it or not?? And great review, I dont know why, but it seemed you tryed harder in this one. ps. Californication was a masterpiece.. just my opinion :) not heard this one yet..
I actually liked their willingness to experiment more, and the kind of scatterbrained values that this record possesses are one of its highlights to me. I would have liked to see a 7 from it, but i understand that it is pretty different, and kind of a departure from their more high octane albums. I think i like it more than the more hardcore chilli pepper fans do, but to be honest albums like Blood Sugar Sex Magic feel a little more raw to me (that's part of the draw, i know) so i tend to prefer their newer, more laid back approach. Now would i say Im with you is better than something like BSSM? Definitely not, but I'd say I liked this album and it has plenty of strong suits, with enough of a RHCP vibe that I'd put it amongst some of my favorite the band has to offer (maybe not top 3 though).
Should do stadium arcadium at some point. It's an interesting album. Great musicianship. Weird songwriting. And if you ask me I'd say John knew it was his last album.
I must disagree that in the internet age there is no such as mainstream or underground. The lines have blurred somewhat, yes, but major label artists still get far more exposure both online and off than independent ones. All the free music in the world doesn't change that. And i can't help but feel the reason people reject this argument is because of some implied snobbery. which isn't necessarily a bad thing, if kept in check.
I sort of like this album, but I'm in much agreement with anthony. I do love monarchy of roses and Brendan's death song tho. However it's no where near as great as their other stuff
Did you just say that a Flea trumpet solo is different? Seriously?! That is standard chili's!!
it annoys me when people mention the chili peppers in the same breath as the foo fighters, since the chilis have been at it since 83 and spent 6-8 years (depending on how you look at it) in the underground LA scene, while the foo fighters started in the mid 90s and shot up immediately. the chilis have definitely worked hard and came from the underground so it's annoying when people dismiss them as another mainstream radio rock band. they never chased the mainstream or sold out, it just came to them.

don't forget chilis were too busy being stoked on heroin so they could've become a bigger act earlier had that not been an issue

+eliot468 yeah, Especially in Michigan

I was in fuckin' stitches.

it’s a grower. decent 5
Lol!
All I noticed is not a word about Chad, like he's irrelevant to the band's sound.
+TheTwicey Chad is rock-solid brilliant and consistent, soo.... ;)
honestly, on this album I think he's shined brighter than he has in a while, with very heavy, funky drumb beats, that carry the beat well, but shine in their own right

@zakdaviesa maybe if it actually gets a release date. i'm not just gonna up and review the leak.
This album has Brendan's Death Song, so that makes it a 10 out of 10! Man, I love that song!
Someday somebody might release an album, with the art being the same colour of your wall. Hopefully you'll review it. It'd be fun.
This is crazy how everything you said I not only agreed with, but I also listened to RHCP so much as a kid. My favorite album is still One Hot Minute.
This video...fades to black...and goes on...forever!!
Cal's bass thing was nothing short of genius
Dum da dum da dum
Is there any album that you actually enjoy?
Not many people are this kind to anthonys voice
I'm Beside You is way better. It has all the tracks that were cut from the album.
@JahmBProducts you didn't read the text at the end.
i dont mind it. i think this record was good, but when ur in a relationship with the band which is good and strong then ull love all their songs. i think now that they are older, they've forgotten about their youth and the ups and downs of being young. i think next record they are going to have to surprise us. this could be a build up to something we would have never imagined possible
@bceltics0404
True, and it's especially brought out by the fact that Chad and Flea seem to be sticking with the same format, not really adjusting to John's leaving yet. I've still got faith that their next album could be an entirely decent release, an 8.6 or so, if they could just stop trying to morph everything into a pop song and get used to the fact that John isn't there anymore. I mean, create something entirely new so that he won't be expected. Just my take. JOHN, NEW ALBUM... sorry
the only thing that i would say about i'm whit you is that i'm waiting for the LP whit the guitar tracks for each song...
@doc998 hat?
By the way I don't know how it is in the US but in Europe the chilis are still very relevant.
"Like dum dum da dum"
@maalbe987 yeah, i'm on a mac now, and it doesn't come w/the font i usually use. i need to get the old font on this v ideo.
Well I've read that junkie's book and he sounds like an awesome dude. And hes been clean since the 90's.
I'll rate it 7.5/10
@CensoredSounds i actually wasn't big on that one. And I said that's one of my favorite songs. I my fav song might be Meet Me At the corner.
I'm in love with this album. However i'm not looking for the classic RHCP sound, now i'm listening to a different band; A band with Josh.
People seem to focus too much on comparing it with their work when then had John, when if course it'd be different. There's no such thing as two artists who can be the same.
One Hot Minute got way more shit than it deserved. It's the weakest of their '90s records, but still solid on its own merits.
nah their style got weird and just lost in mediocrity. they were so generic and yet not even generic enough to be recognized.
ohm is their best album
You know this is an old ass review when the vid’s defaults to 480p resolution and he starts out with “Hello, my needle drops.”
@Tyzilla20 uploading at 5am will do that to you.
6/10 IMO
At what point did you notice that looking to a cover album that isn't there didn't make sense?
It's hard having to disagree with a band you've loved for years. I know the feeling all too well. And I can't blame you for being honest. That's what we watch this stuff for. At least those who disagree with you can appreciate the fact that you're not trying to be a dick, you just didn't altogether like it. At least you try to be constructive and that's pretty cool. From what I've heard of it it was alright. And, yes, Sunn 0)))) does kick ass!
"which reminded me of what I love most about this band: Great vocals"
Is that a joke, man?
Btw, Cal Chuchesta's in depth background of the band revealed so much stuff I never even knew about the band. You really should let him review an album.
i love this album so much. its uber amazing
John is not coming back. It's time for everyone to accept that.
Not to mention Monarchy of Roses. Whether you like that song or not, it deserves a mention in the review
@slartibartfast8787 i'm editing on a mac now, and making a million mistakes. i'm new.
I wasn't a big fan of their so called "groovy tracks" I really liked their ballads like Police Station and Meet Me At The corner especially.
Bang on review bro.
Despite being a huge fan of these guys, i couldnt agree more with what you have said... However i would give this a 6 out of 10.
