Do intentions matter: A reaction to transcendental black metal? theneedledrop.com/?p=4847
On Liturgy's latest album, the interplay and musicianship that made 2009's Renihilation so memorable are magnified with tons of syncopation and detail.
Another great addition to this band's style is their use of swells and crescendos, and it's not in the cliche post-rock way that we're all so used to. This band's dynamics are a result of musicianship and performing as a cohesive unit, not a ton of sound effects throw in during post-production.
Outside of that, the chord progressions of this album are rich and melodic. It's a sweet counterpoint to all of the harsh vocals, guitar chords, and crash cymbals. The moments where tremolo-picked guitars are layered on top of each other only enhance the effect.
There are a few underwhelming moments, and a couple detours, but the album is pretty dang solid! I'm loving the sound, the style, and the songs.
What do you think of this album? Love It? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

FAV TRACKS: RETURNER, GENERATION, TRAGIC LAUREL, GLORY BRONZE, HARMONIA - Видеоклипы
Anthony was so young in this video... The music biz has definitely made him into Oldthony Mantano
I can't be the only one who's just noticed The logo for Transcendental black metal is reused from the super smash bros logo... right?
Exactly what I was going to comment :P
julesmorton holy fuck lol
@@tharkanzox1493 I always thought it was Slayer's God hates us all
This album grabbed me in the first 5 seconds of "Generation."
Daniel Warren Good on you not hating Liturgy. I luv Returner 4 days; it's pure genius.
@electriccarpate i was actually thinking of making my next 5 videos metal reviews: ulver, indian, jesu, red fang, krallice, mamaleek, and maybe some master musicians of bukkake (not really metal on that last one, but still).
I actually thought this album had a really unique, fascinating sound that I wanted to come back to and continue to dissect. And by the way, LOTS of musicians who have released all kinds of great albums are pretentious windbags. Sometimes it just comes with the territory. It's about the music, in the end.
I'm with you on the uplifting, triumphant feeling of the chord progressions. Only a handful of bands can give me that feeling if invigoration and literally take my breath away: Krallice, Castevet, Blut Aus Nord (MV II), Deathspell Omega. Despite the negativity around Hunter and this band, they do have a special and unique sound that I hope they continue to develop. And yes, that drummer is a BEAST!
I couldn't agree with your review more, I got this album like a week ago and have listened to it about ten times already. The people calling this hipster black metal are a bunch of elitists that don't know what the hell they're talking about. This is one of my favorite black metal albums ever, and I've been into said subgenre since 2001 when I stumbled upon a CD copy of Emperor's "In The Nightside Eclipse" at my local record store and splurged five whole dollars on it lol
+Hail Krampus You got it a week ago and it's one of your favourite albums ever? lol ok
Alex Lapeña Is it really up to you to question my opinion? Seriously dumbass, explain this to me.
Hail Krampus Well said dude; I was hooked a few seconds into Returner, it's fucking genius.
After hearing Anthony's description of the drumming on this album, I had to get it.
One of the best metal albums ever made IMO. I honestly am in awe of the care taken in the making of this. It's almost perfect.
@JerryJamal54 that's because it is and i'm dyslexic sometimes.
Stumbled on your Track Review of Liturgy's Mysterium (When you just hit 400 subs in 2009). I thought I would just come here to appreciate how much your delivery of the reviews has improved since 2009. Nothing left to say but thank you and keep up the good work.
Don't stop metal reviews. They are by far my favorite reviews that you do. I don't even listen to metal at all, but I wouldn't have listened to Agalloch's Marrow of the Spirit or Sunn's Monoliths if it wasn't for your review, but that shits goddamn exquisite.
@Smurfkiller921 yep, but they make some good muzak.
You're my new hero. Great review!
A great record and a great record review. I'm feeling the same way, can't get enough of this album, pure beauty. I saw the band play the "Dudefest" in Germany and was so blown away, especially by the drummer, that I drove a few days later to the show in Munich where I had to spend the night in the red light district in my car - it was so worth it. I'll check out more of your reviews, for sure.
@goingnowherelikeme yeah, writing it right now
Thanks For Reviewing This Anthony. I Agree On Almost Everything You Said. Never Heard Of This Band Before And Its Growing On Me. Keep On Doing This.....For Ever.
I love the way you listen to music. And I love your reviews.
Anthony, this is definitely one of your best reviews.
Brilliant review! this album has turned out to be my favorite black metal release all year!
I'd love to see you review This Will Destroy You's Tunnel Blanket, and Jesu's Ascension!
Keep up the great work forever!
request: Volcanic Sunlight by Saul Williams. He's one of my favorites but I don't think his latest album is up to par with his others. I want to hear your opinion on it.
Man, I love Liturgy.
And I love this review. Thank you for doing this.
@MetalManiac13666 Poseur?? What is poseaur?
@jmanzo2009 just uploaded, bro
I can totally dig on the crescendos and the layering of the guitar harmonies and I enjoy the thought put into the music. I just can't get over the vocals!!
WHat exactly are you screaming in the beginning? Also got any good new ambient black metal reccomendations? I've been listening to WITTR's Two Hunters a lot lately...
Damn, wasn't expecting you to review this, even though I did request it. I'm sure others have, as well. Incredible album.
@unplugged1994 dunno what that is. :-(
@Creamy360 hahahahaha. i hope you were thinking good thoughts!
@unplugged1994 if i like it a real real real real real real lot. the scores are a personal reflection of my enjoyment, not a grade on a test paper.
@theneedledrop
I got the exact same feeling as you about the chord progressions. So great.
you are incredibly good at these reviews.
@NordKitten if you can't, revisit the album 10 years after the band has broken up. maybe then. :-P
@wanabeknut no?
Thanks for the review. It's been a long time since I was into metal but I checked out Liturgy based on this video and have been impressed. I can't stop listening to TrueWill and GloryBronze.
Thank you for showing me these guys. Thank you. Thank you.
Haha I love you man. Every time I'm looking up some random/obscure black metal or noise project or something along those lines, I can always count on my homie Anthony Fantano to randomly pop up in the related videos. It honestly makes me lol sometimes. Keep up the solid work brother.
@45nothings eh, i'll live.
Did Fantano mean to mispronounce both album names at the beginning?
omg,thank you dude for showing me an amazing band, i'm stunned of how they sound
@islandmornings hellz yeah
I'll have to check these guys out! Thanks for the review.
@theneedledrop can you review the color morale's new album, my devil in your eyes? it's so awesome.
What do you think of deafheaven?
Such a full sound on this album.
Good words, Anthony.
@PanicPagoda yeah, i derped on that one
Actually the first Litthony Urgytano video I ever saw. Just stumbed upon it.
Could you review the new Hate Eternal "Phoenix Amongst the Ashes"? I don't think I've ever seen you do a death metal review, so that would be awesome!
Any chance of a brief review of the new, free Enslaved EP 'The Sleeping Gods'? I'm a massive fan of Enslaved and I'd be interested to hear what you think of them Anthony.
"Noooo don't steal our sonic elements! You're not a bitter, misanthropic Norseman with right-wing political leanings, you can't possibly GENUINELY like or understand the bleak and extreme sounds of black metvll!! No, we don't care about image at all! BM is about individuality!"
@theneedledrop Ulver has a new album? You made my day
They're performing on Friday & Saturday in Wicker Park, Chicago
What do you mean? What have the Gerogerigegege said about Liturgy?
@finalmattasy yeah, i tend to be a lot more subjective. moral nihilism, bro, moral nihilism.
Hey hey, can you please review that new Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi albm "Rome". Tis streaming at dangermousevevo.
@uphillracer wire- pink flag
@quiettheeffort how kind of you!
@zn3ss sorry, i need to re-inhale and re-think what i said.
Due to the drumming description I might just get interested in this. The frontman turned me off and so did the general music and its feel.
Where might the drummer stand? At who's level? Above who's level? Who does he sound like?
autopsy's macabre eternal is out on the 30th may
you should consider reviewing that if you're into it
more in common with collaborative, optimistic kinds of music, like playing with other people, versus more introverted and perhaps exclusive kinds of creating, like songs that are contributed by one songwriter. Liturgy's songs are webs of influence and input, and by that nature, I think they are convoluted, and they become difficult to for a spectator to understand and, even harder to describe.
So I quite like his pieces of writing. I think they're a gentle insight on how his band interacts.
@Polskimg Screw me for making vids @ 3am, shiiiiiiiiiiiii.
You should review Taake's "Noregs Vaapen". Black metal that's expanding the genre's sound with absolute brilliance.
Also check out Old Silver Key's "Tales Of Wanderings". Lots of people are lukewarm about it, but I think it rules. Drudkh + Alcest = "Eargasm"
@helloasswipes
Why?
you should do a little hippie festival in your garden - looks really comfy!
Why so many dislikes? This album is beautiful
why did he seeming mis-pronounce both of their album titles?
By the way, I agree with you 100% on Glory Bronze. That song is beyond words.
lol big fan here I just saw celeb news in your channel funy stuff man jajaajajja
Do you like Absu?
@shotgunjoe love this comment
I'm glad you managed to reference the jam of a lifetime in a black metal album review.
And OMG, I was thinking the same thing about "Glory Bronze," it felt so, like, happy. Which is really weird. Usually I'm feeling like punching someone after listening to metal :)
Whereas that song made me feel like the chick at the end of that movie "The Descent," when she finds her way out of that nasty cave and sees sunlight for the first time.
Of course, all her friends died in there, but you know. She made it.
The vocals on "Returner" was the only thing that made me believe that Liturgy is a black metal band, their music has more of a loud rock feel than metal, but that's just my opinion. They're pretty good, but I'm looking forward to hearing that new Boris album.
If you wrote a manifesto, what would it be about Anthony?
You should review Balance and Composure - Seperation next!
The thumbnail for this video is right in-between a transition of two albums, come on!
genius album.
TBH I'm not really big on their stuff; I much prefer Ved Buens Ende....
I don't think it's "groundbreaking" at all because of the tens of bands that did this kind of stuff before: the aforementioned VBE, Dodheimsgard, Fleurety (whose one of the members played with Mayhem live), etc. Anyway, this album was alright for me. I do think it lacks the emotion and passion that many other so-called "noisy, non-musical" BM bands have, though, but still - OK.
dibble Word. Scandinavian bands like Ved Buens Ende, Mysticum, Dødheimsgard, Fleurety, Arcturus etc released stuff already in the 90's that was 10 times more groundbreaking for the genre than this hipster crap (which I don't even count as black metal or even related to black metal). In the 2000's we've had bands like Blut Aus Nord, Code, DsO etc to name a few, way before this american hipster wave hit the market, along with their ignorant, clueless fanbase. I wouldn't say the music in itself is "bad", just uninteresting and shallow.
I've always said they sound a lot like Krallice.
>produced by guitarist of Krallice
OH WELL GO FIGURE.
what about a review of Diotima by Krallice? great Black Metal LP!
are you classically trained in music?
i really actually like this band. not so much their views (although, they really are interesting in a way), their style is unique, something that isnt seen especially in metal today.
on top of that, they are clearly technically skilled and do have a good grasp of music theory.
Track review Frank Turner's new single 'Peggy Sang The Blues' please Anthony
I read some of your manifesto in response to this band's manifesto. My logical view on it is that, regardless of anyone's meaning (taken away or intended) in regards to anything (music, paintings or paper cups)... there is a single true meaning to any and everything.
In the same way that scientific theories are either proven true or false, so is (and will) everyone's theory about anything. As the universe and existence is singular by definition, we are subject to the opinion of "single," God
I wanted to make a comment here, finally having listened to this record.
As someone who often dislikes self conscious items and convoluted prose, I recognize that many people, when framing their ideas for other people, must rely on analogies, because their ideas exist to convey a feeling they aren't quite able to describe with the words they have available to them.
That said, I think this record is very much unlike black metal records. I think this is a ever-shifting kind of record, that has
That intro though
@WolfieboyMachi yes they are.
Holy shit, he actually talked about the music! Well done!
I was just thinking of you while listening to Pink Flag, Anthony.
Ultimate question what makes a 10 / 10 rock album
@timmy41 Yeah! Thanks for mentioning it, I've been posting comments about Graveyard on a couple of Anthony's vids now.
Great review to a great record.
I've just listened to Aesthethica.
And, umm...
Well...
IT IS AWESOMAZING. *-*
Agreed. I'm not so much turned off by the band's pretensions (describes a lot of BM artists, actually), but by the music itself. It's certainly unique in sound, but I don't find it 'transcendental' at all. In fact, I can describe a number of other modern BM band's work as such (Blut aus Nord, WitTR, etc).
@electriccarpate whats wrong with metal reviews? i love metal and im sure alot of his viewers do too
woods of ypres - the green album
also i'm going to check this band out.
I was listening to Liturgy but then I got a headache and threw up. I'm still deciding if that's a good sign or not.
Great review Anthony. I actually thought this album was really obnoxious/irritating, but whatever. Glad you're liking it more than I am. xD
yep, true the drumer is genius, rest of the band too, great band, great band
@theneedledrop
Definitely do the MMoB review.
