  • Chris Lee and Alfred Ezman talk about the Florida-Texas A&M matchup in the College World Series. Highlights include: Texas A&M’s Kaeden Kent got an opportunity to shine with Braden Montgomery’s injury and did so, getting perhaps the two biggest hits of the Aggies' season in the super regional vs. Oregon. That illustrates a lot about a deep lineup that includes Jace LaViolette, Ted Burton, Gavin Grahovac, Jackson Appel and others. The Aggies survived last week with a bad start by Ryan Prager, and now suffered a season-ending injury to Shane Sdao. But Chris Cortez and Evan Aschenbeck headline what remains a deep Aggie pitching staff. Meanwhile, Florida has ridden Brandon Neely and Jac Caglianone on the mound to get this far. The numbers weren’t always pretty with Gator pitching, but the run through Stillwater and Clemson remind us that the Gators still have plenty of young talent on the mound. Florida has one of the top home-run hitting teams as Brody Donay, Luke Heyman, Colby Shelton and others have stepped up to supplement Caglianone’s power. All this, plus a prediction.

    From D1 Stats:
    Texas A&M is 4th in scoring at 8.8 RPG; 6th in ERA at 3.94 ; Evan Aschenbeck leads all D1 baseball in ERA 1.66; Cortez is unhittable right now.
    Florida 126th in scoring at 7.0 RPG; 158th in ERA at 6.16;

      Probably not the greatest measure considering we've been playing 10X better in the last 2 weeks. Should be a good one.

      @@TheRayOfBlue Yes, Florida is on fire right now and not a great matchup for A&M. Schoss would need to get creative on his pitching matchups against your lineup.

      Metrics measure season totals. FL is peaking at the right time.... They beat the BIG 10, BIG 12, AND ACC champions. Their lone loss in the regionals and super regionals was to one of the best pitchers in the country. There is a reason why they were rated so high early in the season.

      Yeah A&M finished 15 games better than Florida over the regular season. Insane. This is not the regular season though and UF hits Prager well, so let's see if he gets revenge on them, or if Cortez has to come in early and pitch 5+

    If A&M takes walks, they win. Simple formula this year for them.

    Prager averages 6 starts between bad games so by that logic, we’re not due to see a bad Prager for remaining of the season

    • @chopkong

      Florida tagged Prager for 6 runs in 2 innings off 5 HR's back in March. Prager is not a dominating pitcher. He's kind of a Greg Maddux type pitcher, nipping at the edges, control, movement, etc. If Prager's stuff is floating in the zone, he'll get tagged. He's got to have life on his pitches in order to play. His last outing, he kept laying his pitching down the gut of the plate. The only pitchers that had success against Florida in their earlier series were Aschenbeck, Moss, Perry and Rudis. Everyone else got hammered. Maybe the best strategy would be to pitch Florida with Rudis or Moss, and have Perry or Aschenbeck for relief.

    I've been following the college world series for a long time, including covering it in 1993for the A&M newspaper. This may be one of the most talented and most balanced fields I've ever seen. Should be great baseball.
    Don't count out Florida. They were young at the start of the season but they grew up a LOT against that terriffic and terrible schedule. No one is a freshman anymore.

      Gig'em! Florida scares me because they clobbered our pitching. The only pitchers that had success against Florida in their earlier series were Aschenbeck, Moss, Perry and Rudis. Everyone else got hammered. Maybe the best strategy would be to pitch Florida with Rudis or Moss, and have Perry or Aschenbeck for relief. Save Prager for game 2.

    think it’ll be a close one in a hot florida gator team and a very talented a&m lineup. all depends on both teams pitching. if cags has competitive ABs and finds the zone early i think florida comes out slightly. although i think if ryan prager puts up his usual numbers a&m has a great chance of winning.

    I want to have confidence in RP, but it seemed like he was starting to lose his edge a little bit against the longhorns on the College Station regional, and then pitched worse against Oregon. I hope I am wrong but he may be going in the wrong direction...

      A&M has had top 5 ERA in baseball all season, and at one point was #1; and their pitching was nails all game. Also, their defense was spectacular and they take professional at-bats every game. How about giving A&M some credit for that win? LOL

      @@coachjody1971 What a soft ego. Regular season means nothing. You got beat by a better team. If they played scared, then they weren't better mentally. If they let a ball pop out, then they weren't better skillfully.
