Awezome Work I just started to do Models again after a 20 year hiatis the amount of attention to detail and the tips and tricks helping other model builders watching these videos has inspired me to build agiain.
Thanks for the great video. I used the technique you shared for my Vorpanzer and although I didn't have the sea green, I substituted a mix of US dark green with a dash of brown in my base color and it worked fine. I'll be using the hairspray technique for my chipping. Well put together videos and I am learning a lot from you.
Wonderful stuff mate. I have not made a model in about 10 years so thanks for renewing my interest. Please keep up the level of detail on how to paint models. Trust me! I need as much help as I can get. Thanks again. I look forward to watching all your current and future videos. Cheers Jim
pre shading works but it's a very subtle effect. Its better suited to lighter colours too, hence why it's so useful for aircraft painting. I have never seen a plane in the colour modulation style as I think the whole genre is a little more traditional, but you could experiment with using panel lines as masking edges and then seeing how it looks. I wouldn't go for a gradient on the fuselage though as it would be difficult to keep even.
Is there any chance in the future you could do an extended verison of colour modulation, because your videos are all great for beginners and modellers like me who struggle with colour modulation and other modelling techniques plus weathering, thanks.
I wasn't sure wether i loved or hated you tube, i now know i hate it, shows me what an amateur painter i am lol I love your videos and will be trying out some of your techniques on my Space marine tanks, thanks for posting
@franticfreddie163 Sure it would. I believe the origins of the "colour modulation" technique actually lie in aeroplane modelling. I think it was something to do with painting different colours along panel lines to give them definition. If you want to "modulate" the colour black then you need to enter into the grey scale, using a very dark grey for your "black" base and black for shadow, lighter grey for highlight.
Hi Scalemodelmedic great vid thank you for uploading! Two questions? First Im thinking of using this technic on a F-117 Nighthawk would it work? and secondly can you get different variations of the colour black? Once again thanks for the vids I have learnt a lot keep up the good work Fred
Beautiful job and well-described technique. I'd love to see if this can be done on a later-war German tank with their dark yellow--light olive--red brown color scheme.
Hi Mate, great Model and Paintwork. I do have a question though: You do start with a black as a "primer". What i had done with my last few aircraft models, was pre-shading. In fact it did'nt come out as i hoped it would. Now, would it make more sense to actually paint the whole thing black, and then do what you are doing in this vid? thanks
It's a great video. One thing that you maybe should've done is to get the same tank and paint it without color modulation, just to show the difference. Once again, great work!!!
@MHMonsie it's easy mate, the "parts" can be any unit of measurement depending on how much paint your mixing. If you want to just shoot your highlights from the airbrush then use each "part" as 1 drop from the paint. So it would be 5 drops of one paint and 1 drop of the other.
@ScaleModelMedic Thanks for the advice, I shall experiment with the grey's starting firstly with panzer grey's and then down the spectrum as you suggested. I will keep you up dated hopefully with a few pic's looking forward to the next instalment Fred
I did this in 2 or 3 sittings - mainly because I was filming and it always takes longer when doing that. Just make sure everything is nice and dry before moving on!

What a great video thanks for the explanation plain simple and to the point. Bravo

Even though this is a ten-year-old video, this is a great help for me, thank you!

Great technique, I look forward to seeing a vid of the finished piece. 5 star's.
wow that looks so awsome .... nice job man ! btw what the name of the song in the background ? lol
wow, thats a great job, thanks for sharing
Very good model build
No I spray at my normal pressure, to avoid any splattering. I usually paint at about 25psi
very interesting! But on a model aircraft is it possible this style?
Grate guide, thank 4 sharing your knowledge
That is awesome! I hope I can do something like that if I ever get an airbrush
Hi there, 1st off hope your wedding goes well. 2nd : how long would you say you spent in painting each model?
this looks really good on flat panels but what about curves? how would you go about doing a ww2 sherman tank with its rounded turret?
I noticed that you only show working on the horizontal surfaces, what did you do/ how did you paint the vertical surfaces

it is a mice technique, though it requires a hell of a skill and patience. making post-shades with oil paints look easier to me as a novice
Hi Kasper
I've got an intro on the new video. .. weird you mention that now as I've only just decided to go with one !
I did this in 2 or 3 sittings - mainly because I was filming and it always takes longer when doing that. Just make sure everything is nice and dry before moving on!
How long have you been doing this mate?
how do you know which colours to use for a particular modulation
@svinehunden
thank you mate, I have made a video on how I did the tools which is next :)
poo stain brown by Tamiya works nicely in my experience btw.
@theBoonarmies
about five years or so
Is this possible to replicate with spray cans from Tamiya?
Kevin Yang nope
Anybody knows techniques of colour modulation whitout airbrush?... Brush and pastels? Brush and pigments? Layers? .....

I hate people like you :)...You make it look so damn easy!
