First time I ever watched a SMB1 speed run... I thought some of this stuff. How do you get to the 4-2 warp zone without the beanstalk? Why are they bumping into the bottom of the flagpole? How are they jumping through piranha plants? It was pretty eye-opening after I watched some of these "SMB speed running explained" videos.

That going right through a piranha plant is caused by those weird hitboxes. I mean, the piranha plants have a tiny hitbox that is right at the base of them. That pipe going into the warp zone is called wrong warping. That running on air is caused by him just holding the B button when going over 1-block gaps. And that weird stomping is just Mario's weird physics. Basically he can stomp on enemies when he is on the top OR while he is going down.
