I would have thought wood was the best material for speakers not aluminium. I think they would have to use lots of damping material when using aluminium to stop it sounding tinny.
There are mor than 3.000 billionaires in the world. But you need a pretty large room for the M9, no matter how much money you have. A proper listening room would cost a couple of million in land and construction costs.
I applaud them. With $3 in materials and a few cents of slave labor, Nike Air Jordans aren't worth what they're asking either... Exotic materials science, vapor deposition, the finest precision CNC machining, decades of R&D ... it's essentially Formula 1 cutting edge tech in a loudspeaker... I applaud them, I too would charge as much as anyone would pay. Successful playback of a realistic recreation of a sonic event in a listening room is a daunting endeavor. Get the finest loudspeakers possible, and optimize your room ... those two elements a far and away the most important components. Then work on the signal chain. I'd agree and say they're ridiculous, but it's a ridiculous task.
How much are they worth then? I once heard a pair of Infinity RSV's in a private home - retail back in the late 80's was £45K- and they were worth every single penny - if I had the money I would not hesitate here either - you never regret paying for the best whatever the price - it is the best!!! - I am a photogpraher - I have to my hands around 250K of digital cameras - my Phase One retails for around £60k - people often say - but it's just a camera - yes but it's the best camera.
Some yrs back i talked to somebody who used to sell hi end hifi stuff & he told me the markup for such hi end stuff is crazy….easily 20 to 30 times more. Same goes for most luxury items.
I think Alon wasn't fully breaking down the rationale on the speaker cost. It's not just the BOM. Engineering isn't free. Good engineering cost real money. That ends up in the speaker price too.

M9 requires (and is designed for) a large room, not to mention that they weigh 1,000 lbs each (454 kg), not including the external active crossover which weigh 60 lbs each. The size of the M9 is 80"H x 40"D x 20"W.

THe thing is , such huge woofers must have PAPER cones. and Alon has strong dislike for Paper cones, as he sells hi tech graphene cones with cabinets for Space Rockets/submarines. Just kiddin. or maybe not
Alon Wolf are talking about a full frontloaded horn system and that will not be possible without some very large basshorns. OMA have back-loaded horns that brings problem in timedomain and other areas.
@@Stereopluss Well, if backloaded horn is used under 40 or 60Hz only, its not THAT much of an issue. Even Aries Cerat had such models, but their new Aurora is now open baffle bass. So I still think he has issues with paper cones ;) anyway, great channel!

BOM is bill of materials and is a manufacturing term, which not just the cost of the "material" but the cost of the manufacturing and assembly of the parts used in an end product, and a big part of that is labor cost.
@@Mark-rw3kw I would imagine that most of it is labor cost, cost of specialty equipment, etc. The actual magnets, carbon fiber, and aluminum are negligible compared to everything else.
@@igottheshaft Yes, plus there is R&D costs, costs of the manufacturing building, utilities, insurance, accounting , legal fees, taxes, and many other costs of running a business that are not directly included in the COGS (cost of goods sold). Companies need to make a profit to pay back their original investors or to pay back bank loans used to get the business started. Companies like Magico have a lot of computer controlled CNC machines that are worth millions in total. There are several videos you can find where tours of the Magico facility are shown.
I disagree with the man in this video, saying that it’s a sacrifice to use wood for the cabinet of a speaker I think that’s totally ridiculous and they need to learn how to make more affordable products. Yeah, your speakers will sell at that price, but you really won’t become a household name Let alone expand. To be honest as well I think wood is a really good chamber good material actually great material for speakers with a speaker can’t get past is the fact that a human vocal chamber does deal with residence does have a level of local shifts if you will, there is no cabinet that will adapt in real time to that level, and I really would have to be such a thing in order for the sound more realistic.
There is absolutely no shortage of cheaper speakers out there. For them to build with wood would just devalue their high end models. Should Ferrari compete with the Honda Civic to? Does that make any sense?

One is add some warmth like the baffle on a guitar, and the other is to add nothing to the recorded sound, assuming that the warmth of the original guitar is already in the recording. Obviously, Magico assumes the later philosophy.
