I worked at a winery for 10+ years. We used ozone to sanitize barrels. PVC hoses used to transport ozonated water into the barrels had frequent leaks. We switched to silicone hoses because they were advertised as having better ozone resistance. The silicone hoses lasted much longer. Ozone (O3) is a strong oxidizer.

I want to tell people how important it is to wear your CPAP. I wore it but I wore it and then didn't wear it then wore it and pull it off at night and I found out that I have pulmonary hypertension which can be caused by having sleep apnea. So please wear your CPAP so you're not having those times of obstructive sleep apnea or just apnea.

Yes. Also mention that getting the oil off of the mask makes a better seal. I told pts when it is clean it sticks to the skin and makes a better seal. When it gets the facial oils on there and feels slick and it leaks. Don't know if the discoloration effects anything - probably makes it brittle but not known.

  • @Moveon10001

It takes some time for the Ozone to damage the hose. And it depends on the concentration of the ozone. The more UV light that is exposed to the air the higher the ozone levels will be. Normally when generating Ozone, a metal shield is fitted over the long UV light and can be slide over the light or pulled off the light by a certain amount. This makes the amount of UV light exposed to the air change. I worked for the EPA and ran the Ozone monitor. I watched the Indiana State Board of Health Air Pollution Control Air Monitoring Section guys come to town from INDY to calibrate the ozone machine. They had different settings on the light shield inside their Ozone calibration devise that they used to generate various ozone levels from 0 to 0.5 PPM Ozone and then check the Ozone monitor's response. Our ozone monitor had a zero knob and a high point know that was calibrated and could be changed to read the correct ozone reading while ozone at various concentration was fed into the machine. The slope was set, and the Beckman Ozone monitor was then calibrated.
Now I'm thinking that these ozone cleaning devices use UV light inside them to break the O2 molecules in the air into O3 and O. Both are highly reactive which is how they kill bacteria and fungal spore in the tubing and mask. The slower the air flow in the cleaning device the higher the exposure to UV light will be and the higher the ozone concentrations will be.

After 13 months rental, I own it. So I threw it away. The DME provider told me I couldn’t throw it away and ask for a new one. They had no replacements & waiting for info from CPAP machine manufacturers. I told Him, I own it, the Seals may be degraded and I want a new one. I worked up to talk to the owner. I think you need to do the ozone test without butter and conductive paste inside. Anything inside the box will out gas and contribute to that discoloration you see. It’s possible the material would have discolored anyways but I think the two substances you added to the box may have contributed significantly to the discoloration.

I started getting horrible sinus and bronchial infections after starting on a CPAP. I did not put 2 and 2 together to understand it was my CPAP causing them. This went on for a couple of years until I bought a SoClean. I have never had another bad infection since. Yes it yellows the silicone, so what. I had my Resmed S9 for over 7 years, 5 of which I had used a SoClean and it was still going strong. I just recently upgraded to the S10 because I was afraid to risk being without my CPAP. The home medical was surprised my S9 was still going good and had not given a end of life message. I wear min CPAP religiously so it gets a lot of use. One thing I discovered was to not allow the rubber end of the hose to be inside the SoClean. It will cause the rubber to get weak and not fit tight on the short hose to my FX Nasal mask. Once I started to only put the mask with as little hose as possible in the tank, I don't have any trouble. I understand that Ozone is dangerous but there is a two hour "dissipation" period and I make a point to take mine out as soon as I can to give it even more time to breath. I also run my machine for 10-15 seconds before I put it on to help flush any possible residual gases. For me the sanitation factor is worth any possible CPAP life expectancy degradation. I just know I went from at least 2 horrible infections a year down to zero.

In the cleaning industry ozone machines are used for several purposes.
    Sanitization and deodorization.
If your house gets "skunked" professional cleaning crews will use an ozone machine (while you sleep in a hotel) to get rid of the stink.
Ozone machines are not meant for regular use it will deteriorate any plastics. You will be told to remove certain items from your home prior to using an ozone machine. Ozone machines will deteriorate any plastics, badly.
Used cars can be deodorized with an ozone machine. Dealers will use one to make a car no longer stink, some used cars are just nasty. Once again, only use ozone machine to deal with an issue, not for regular use. Cars are deodorized within an hour or two, overnight use will destroy the plastics on the dash and ruin the car.

The moisture from your breath and from the humidifier lead to mold and bacteria growth. Ozone is very effective at killing these microbes. It DOES degrade plastic and silicone, but in my experience the breakdown is slower than the normal replacement interval. IOW, you will be throwing your consumables in the trash sooner than the ozone can cause failure. In the case of my nasal pillows, it actually EXTENDS the life..
Yep. Because the breakdown actually makes the silicone more supple and they therefore seal better and longer. I'm buying WAY fewer pillows than before cleaning with ozone.
The one downside of some machines is that they actually let ozone enter your machine. That's a big no-no.
Look for devices that allow you to clean your components detached from your machine.

The rest of my gear gets cleaned via my So Clean daily. There are a lot of feet of tubes and sealed systems that I simply can not get to. No where did I see that ozone (by advertisement or scientifically) is for general upkeep or cleaning of equipment. Of course you are required to clean with normal methods. This video actually bugs me, because I’ve seen mould growing in peoples hoses in winter, even when cleaning it correctly. Unless you use bleach or other mould killers the spores stays in the hoses.

I’ve had my CPAP for a few years. I take it my Dr twice yearly during my check ups and they test the equipment for performance and leaks. I’ve used my ozone cleaning now for two years; it keeps the remaining water in the reservoir clean so all I have to do is add water, not dump it. The water now stays clear and clean, where as before, if I didn’t fully wash the reservoir daily, a film and orange/pink would cover the inside in less than a week, and now that doesn’t happen at all. I follow the directions of my ozone cleaner and still clean my equipment every couple of months for a thorough deep cleaning. Yellowing has been minimal, but who cares as long as it is not damaging my CPAP gear. Many plastics simply yellow over time anyway. Besides that, my insurance covers a new set of tubes, and headgear, and numerous nasal pillows per year. And even if it didn’t, it’s my money and if I like it, it’s not a waste.
You may want to consider that the lack of non-ozone air circulation on your test equipment, may have sped up the discoloring. Perhaps you should try it again, and run the CPAP through daily full cycles so you get a more accurate results of how the equipment is actually used.

A word to anyone using a CPAP/BiPAP - if your Sleep Specialist does not require regular yearly/twice yearly check up and equipment check - you may want to consider a new one. My specialist checks my machine, reviews my sleep history, checks me out neurologically, and if I have had any fluctuations in weight greater 10-20 lbs., they request a whole new sleep study to make sure you are getting the optimum performance from your CPAP. Being totally blind, I of course couldn’t see what you saw. All I can go by is the fact I have been using So Clean with my Rez med machine since October 2018 and every time I take everything in to be checked, it is fine. I like using it because I don’t have to try to clean the tubing with water and then hope I get it all out. This way, I know it’s clean. It smells clean, it feels clean, and when I have a sighted person check it, it is always clean. It may not be the best way to do things, but sometimes for some people, it’s the only way. If you have a suggestion for me to try, please let me know.

@ users of ozone machines. Ignorance is bliss. I see that many people still run on the theory that what you don't know won't harm you. 😀 If it does not clean, sterilize or effectively disinfect then what are you using it to do? Even if the device could disinfect, the most critical part of disinfection and sterilization is the cleaning of the item prior to the disinfection/sterilization process. All disinfection/sterilization devices assume a certain level of bioburden. For example the hospital's CSSD don't take items and simply place them in the autoclave (sterilizer). The item most go through a reprocessing procedure which starts with the cleaning process, the use of enzymatic detergents. Without this cleaning stage the likelihood that you will even achieve even low level disinfection is remote at best. We are all free to do as we want with regards to the care of our systems and health. That's a personal choice however NOT scientifically evidenced information. I like to be informed on a subject, so even if I go against the data I can't say I didn't know the risk and possible consequences.

I use a soclean for 3 years now, no issues. Tubing and whole mask go into the soclean. New nose piece every quarter, not worried about yellowing. You should be replacing that nose piece anyway. And you should wipe down that silicone nose piece once a night before using it again. It’s better than washing the tubing and mask everyday.

It seems to me that the test was somewhat extreme. Daily ozone application for over a month without taking the equipment from the box and allowing it to sit in a normal air environment. I have been using the soclean machine with the F20 cushion for over a year and have seen no visible breakdown of either the cushion (change every 2 months) or the Airsense 10. A simple wipe down with a non alcoholic wipe for the cushion and pop it into the soclean. Just my thought on the matter.

You need to look at the inside of your machine after a year of using ozone on it. Ozone destroys rubber. Ozone is highly reactive. If you live in an area of high air pollution (ozone levels and Sulfates) you will notice that the lawn chair webbing will start to deteriorate due to high ozone in the ambient air and high sulfate levels in the air. I had a Philips machine and had to have it replaced due to the recall. I never used ozone technology to clean the machine. But I bet that some people did and that is why the sound proofing fell apart inside these machines. My background is air pollution control and I'm an environmental scientist.

Running the ozone 2 x per day, without opening the box may have resulted in more ozone exposure than wveryday use.

I believe your method keeps the parts saturated in ozone way above normal exposure levels. After every exposure you should have opened the box and aired out the parts. I think this was a poor test, do something that shows actual use where ozone is run through and then fresh air finish. Also mask parts are routinely replaced. I also believe you got the result you set out to get by the method you used. Washing should be a part of cleaning no matter what, no one thought peanut butter would be cleaned off, but it is germ free

I wish you had compared cleaning the control machine/equipment daily according to manufacturers' recommendations rather than just letting the control equipment sit idle. I also felt that there were already some differences in sound and visual appearance at the beginning of the study. The machine that was assigned to the ozone study was already louder than the control machine, in my opinion. As for the masks, while I thought I noticed slight differences in appearance, I couldn't tell which went to the ozone box and which went to the control. Regardless, the differences in appearance at the end of the study were significantly more noticeable. I also think the chemicals (butter and other paste) added to the ozone group may have sandbagged the experiment. Who knows? I stopped using my SoClean 2 machine at the beginning of the recall, and I haven't cleaned my tubes/masks according to manufacturers' recommendations since (meaning, I haven't cleaned them at all--rather, I only replaced them when necessary). My sinus infection rate did not increase as a result. I am convinced that my sinus infections resulted from introduced bacteria/chemical residue during the cleaning process. I do use sanitary wipes on the skin-contact surfaces of the masks from time-to-time. Bottom line, I don't miss the ozone cleaner.

I've used a SoClean now for about three years and have noticed less sore throat. None actually.
A note though, on the cleaner and a Philips Respironics CPAP machine. They are replacing the CPAP machines due to a breakdown of a sound insulator that the ozone flows over, breaking it down. This just happened last week and not a lot is known from my med supplier though. Philips is saying it will take some weeks to replace and to use only the mask and hose in the SoClean for the time being.
Resp Doc says that the breakdown of the insulation can cause all sorts of nasty vapors and even some bits to flow through the mask in use. Some are "C" causing vapors.
I will follow and let you know what they come up with, but for me, it's back to Dawn and vinegar at least once a week...

I felt ripped off because I thought I could just turn on the SoClean and go but its solely for killing bacteria and you still need a good routine for cleaning your machine. Ozone is a terrible respiratory irritant, so if ozone is used to treat the internal parts of the machine, then one must wait the required time before using the machine and run the machine to evacuate remaining gas.
Ozone machines are used in pest control to kill roaches and spiders because the gas turn the juicy insides acidic and they literally melt like the wicked witch of the west .
The nature of the gas is that is reactive a normal atmospheric pressure. It breaks down to oxygen particles again but can turn water acidic.
This is why it is a lung irritant.
It does not give bacteria a chance and other microbes for survival.
We use it in our rental machines for that purpose.
We replace the seals every 6 months as they yellow in the dreamstations.

    • @shariakers2387
      @shariakers2387 3 года назад +5

My previous comment was deleted apparently, I hope you will be able to view this. I am a retired doc and not swayed by internet-based hype.
We breathe a bit of ozone everyday. Depending on where you live, it is more concentrated than in other locals. (Think hot, smoggy days in LA versus a green mountain meadow in Vermont, for example.)
The ozone in the SoClean2 machine is short-acting and the sanitizing of your equipment occurs in steps. Each step is indicated by a red, yellow, or green light.
RED: the SoClean is operating and generating activated oxygen.
YELLOW: SoClean is in its 2-hour disinfecting cycle.
GREEN: The disinfecting has been successfully completed.
When the machine - or your equipment - is brand new, there may be an odor after the first few uses. Also, if you are concerned that there may be ozone remnants in the hose(s), simply remove your mask/headgear from the SoClean chamber and set it off to the side on a clean surface. Turn your CPAP machine on and let it run for a few minutes. 5-15 minutes, say, while you’re brushing your teeth and getting ready for bed. The time really depends on the user’s preference. For example: My machine runs at 10am, completes at 12-12:30pm. I don’t go to bed before 11pm to midnight - so I’m not concerned with “trapped ozone,” as anything left would have dissipated by the time I put the mask on.
Does SoClean really clean CPAP? Not really. It is not a cleaner, it is a sanitizer. - But “SoSanitize” isn’t as catchy as “SoClean” - AND, when it comes to good respiratory health, sanitary, germ-free tubing and masks are paramount.
      - Sanitizing reduces the number of bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
      - Cleaning removes dirt and other particles. The best cleaning method is soap and water - or CPAP mask wipes.
      WHAT I DO:
      1) Remove headgear, everything attached.
      2) Wipe the mask and frame with a CPAP wipe.
      3) Drop it all into the SoClean machine.
      4) Make sure water reservoir is at adequate level and that the check valve and all cords are firmly attached.
      5) Wipe my CPAP machine and SoClean machine down with a CPAP wipe.
      6) Cover both machines with a king-sized pillowcase.
      7) Forget about it until I go to bed.
      - That whole process takes MAYBE 3 minutes. My SoClean machine is auto-programmed to begin cleaning at 10am daily.
Three years. No problems. My CPAP is perfect. (Resmed Airsense 10)
When the internet rumors went from, “SoClean is magically wonderful!” To, “Ozone is bad and dangerous!”
      - I had a meeting with my Pulmonologist. We are science-based thinkers.
Again, there is ozone in the air we breathe everyday. The SoClean machine does not blow or otherwise import ozone into your lungs or respiratory system- it is not on while your CPAP is on. Your CPAP machine uses the air in your room - and it has filters to boot.
I would continue to do what works best for you knowing that you may safely and confidently eliminate “ozone problems” from your checks and balance sheet. - Provided, of course, that you are utilizing your equipment as the manufacturer has directed. Good sleep & Good health to you! 😊 🛏 💤

@@shariakers2387 Thank you do much. When I originally got my CPAP, I would wash it every morning as I was getting ready for work. This would be around 6:30 or 7:00. I generally go to sleep around 10:30 or 11:00. The hose was always filled with some amount of water. The result was a very uncomfortable experience. I was overjoyed to purchase the SoClean. I thought about getting the Hurricane dryer, but it is ridiculously big. And there is no using it and putting it away, for all intents and purposes. It would just be out all of the time. That would make me crazy. Thanks again for your much welcomed response!

I have had a SoClean for about 5 years or so and I stopped using it about a year and a half ago because it keep breaking my Resmed A-10 machine. Seemed like a good product on the surface but not so much if it breaks you CPAP machine. Luckily my CPAP was replaced under warranty but the people at that gave me my replacement machine the second time suggested that I not use my SoClean anymore. No issues since then.

Ok so I get that you hate these but I’ve been using my SoClean2 for years and I’ve never ever had that yellowing ever happen. I have the Dreamwear mask and change it out ever month. I clean my nasal mask ever day. My machine sounds just fine🤷‍♀️ Not saying it can’t happen just never happens with mine.

i saw a class action law suit against soclean 2 ozone cleaner. Our soclean 2 quit at 2 years 17 days. Gee just when the warranty ran out. Then I saw your cool video. Nice job. earlier today we got another ozone cleaner. The ozone cleaner is cordless. it runs in a bag with everything except the machine. for 35 min. Then for 90min. you let the zipped up bag sit. Once done. hook everything up to you machine and turn on your machine for 60 seconds to clear out the deadly gas. Ive changed my mind about this ozone cleaner. Im leaning toward ULTRA VIOLET CLEANER. UVC. What do you think about UVC?

Please note I did "like" this video, however I think your premise is a bit skewed. Before you say (what does he know), I will say that I do not use Ozone to clean mask.
I will however give you my entire cleaning regimen, and the reasoning behind the hygiene.
Two years ago I was awakened two or three nights in the course of a month with a really foul smell that was so bad that I was literally choking.
I contacted various people from the DME, my Doctor as well as Jason's Videos.
The DME recommended that I get a Ozone device.
This odor was coming from inside my Resmed Curve, and the hose. The smell was something akin to burnt wiring and rancid meat.
I wash the mask (F30), either in Lemon Joy,Dawn, or Mask Brite. My Tubing and the Resmed Curve, and Hunidifier Chamber are gassed daily! No yellowing of the hose, the Machine is fine, the seals in the Humidity Chamber are soft (even after 120 days of use).
So the Ozone does not hurt those components, I can not speak to the yellowing of the mask as I do not gas a mask for obvious reasons that you stated.
There is a place for ozone, to kill fungus, and mold in the dark moist environment inside the machine, and tubing.
My Hurricane Dryer only has to dry the mask cushions, and headgear, and since I have been using ozone I have not been awakened by a noxious smell anymore.

Only time i get the burnt smell is from if i have the heating on the Cpap turned up or It's on Auto climate it can wake me with the smell when the room gets cold during the night. Agreed…i think if its used on a machine that doesn’t have toxic foam in it ozone will definitely kill bacteria and mold in a machine, i just use a rescomf about five times a year for half an hour because my resmed machine is 7 years old. Although i never use it to clean mask I do disagree with with why we clean masks…oils etc degrade the silicone but skincells etc from skin actually let bacteria thrive to make your skin then get irritated…thats literally why it gets irritated so yeah i was a bit taken aback by that comment. Of course its not going to clean your mask re the butter…lol…its just gasses it…like of course it doesn’t get dirt and oils off, it just takes any bacteria out of them…if you were going to use one for masks you need to wash first then stick it in to sterilise it, do a proper cleaning experiment…swab them. And also mold is killed too. And bacteria is a problem…its not that harmless if it is left…hence the skin irritation.

June 14, 2021, Phillips issued a Recall to mitigate potential health risk related to the sound abatement foam component affecting many CPAP machines. Basically the foam is deteriorating causing louder sound and a potential for some of the foam to enter the airstream and into the lungs! Phillips recommend not using ozone cleaners. HOWEVER as of yet Phillips has yet to determine what is causing the foam deterioration! Even some non-ozone users are expecting foam deterioration!

I used to put the tank on and add water but I kept getting sick so I stopped and now it's been 4 yrs I have not been sick with a chest infection so if you can use one without the water tank I highly recommend it and I am a sever case of sleep apnea I can't take a nap unless I use one. It s not the bacteria on the face but it’s the mould that can form in the tubing and mask due to the humidity that that you need to disinfect the tubing and mask. You do not put you machine in ozone as it ma get damaged by time and it is useless. Masks and tubes are changed regularly so any yellowing is not important. I ve been using an ozone disinfector with no problem for years.

  • @iamintractable1805

Ozone breaks down on its own very rapidly. Air-tight is not needed. CPAP cleaners must also have a feature that sends regular air through the device for a period of time after dosing. Ozone does not need much contact time to be effective at eliminating germs, viruses etc. No one ever stated that these devices clean up the oils, so I agree with you that periodic cleaning for that is needed. Your experiment, however is unrealistic in that you dont give the ozone a path out of the container thereby increasing the corrosive nature of o3. As I stated below, I have put the whole dream station in a sleep 8 bag for a while and it works properly after 3 years.

    • @iamintractable1805
      @iamintractable1805 3 года назад +1

To clarity, I believe, as you do, that the inside of masks need to be cleaned periodically. The oils, however, are not the target of these machines.

How do hospitals and DME companies clean the cpap unit between patients? I've read don't buy a used machine but DME companies take back units everyday. They tried to give my son a used one. The filter package was torn open in the case and the book was clearly used. I was told they are allowed to recycle them. Clearly it had not been cleaned. Do they harbor bacteria inside the unit?

I went to my local DME to test for a few masks. They were all yellow because of their ozone cleaners. Also the ResMed pillow cushions whistled. The tech there said new ones win, only those test unit does because of too many cleaning cycles.
