In case you don't already know, NASCAR style race vehicles are equipped with Soft and Smooth racing tires, which have very little turning abilities but are great for higher speeds in straighter lines. They can't really get good grip once you start to slide, and if you can hold a drift in a NASCAR race, then I'd be impressed even with a small drift. Because in NASCAR, once you lose it, you're likely going to crash. Edit: 3:40 This is nearly impossible in NASCAR, yet this guy did it! He pulled a successful drift and controlled it! I am pretty impressed!
Thing is, when I see them slide, I see almost no countersteering, if any. When you start to slide, the first thing you should do is countersteer. I think I've only seen one guy use proper technique to correct a slide, and apparently, he's an ex rally driver, and he saved it. Are NASCAR drivers trained to just give up when they slide and not even try to save it? If the guy at 3:40 had spun the wheel back the other way when he started to straighten out, he might've been able to keep gooing I know that, in circuit racing, correcting a slide is one of the most important things to know, because as an amateur driver, you're going to slide, even if you've got AWD. Even as a pro, you might have to do it. You might come across an asshole driver who either forces you to slide to clear or a corner or who just outright rams you to cause a slide, so it's a very good thing to know. I don't know if I could save the slides they get into, but I sure as shit wouldn't just give up and let it happen
1:23 Notice how, right here, he puts his foot on the brake, but the brake lights aren't on. I think most of us can guess why this is. It's because the actual stunt driver was just pulling the handbrake. That made me wonder. Why didn't they just have Burt Reynolds pull the handbrake? It's not as if that's some obscure racing technique or anything. Everyone knows what a handbrake is
0:30 sheriff #1: did you see that they went right through a roadblock. 0:32 sheriff #2: you sumbitches couldn’t close an umbrella. 1:53 sheriff #4: you see (chuckles) I didn’t wreck it sheriff. 2:17 sheriff #3: hey the cop came off. 2:19 sheriff #2: no sh*t!

Well, Joey Logano just got lucky in that instance...
NASCAR drivers depend on luck?
REAL RACERS depend on **SKILL**
