thanks for the stream! my honest take on the sustainability is that we’re artist who are making art works, and the intention behind them most of the time is for them to last or to be seen somewhere, so it’s not like they’ll end up in landfills, at least that’s never the intention! Even artists who aren’t professionals, if their art last longer than them, the family might wanna keep it and take care of it. So I genuinely don’t think it’s worth stressing about wether my art is sustainable or not because it’s not like artworks are the source of the problem anyway! Generally I try my best recycling at home, reutilizing things as much as I can (like when painting, reusing the same paper tissues until i can no longer, or just using a rag that I can wash, using recycled glass jars and etc), and I think that’s the responsibility I can take as an individual. Most part of waste comes from companies that are mass producing stuff everyday, definitely not our sketchbook. Having said that, I acknowledge the importance of being conscious of buying only things that we need and if we’re not using a certain material, we can donate it or give it to someone who will just to make sure the objects we’re buying are being well utilized to reduce waste.

I try to choose good permanence in substrates and media, the top two tiers of lightfastness in blue wool and ASTM scales, because you never know what's going to turn out especially well that you want to keep, pass along. An outlier sketchbook became the first re-entry one.

i keep coming back to this. and it seems like making a piece of art is like buying a new car. it loses 10 percent of its value as soon as you drive it off the lot. As soon as the pigment hits the canvas as soon as the canvas is created, its all slowly on its way out. i promise i wanna make art lol. but i always thought it was leaving an expression of a moment you felt or a place in a moment in time or a place from your imagination to future generations for the rest of time so that you live forever in a way, but if art has a lifespan itself, and you can't always control when your art is found or appreciated, it just makes me wonder if perhaps there are more reasons not to create than to create?

Have any of you tried Nova Color acrylic paints? I’ve been using them for the past few years and love them. I discovered them from an artist whose work I like, because he was talking about the supplies he uses in a video on his RUclips channel, so I decided to try them and have been using them ever since. According to their website, their paints have exceptional light fastness, and long lasting vibrant colors. They sell direct from their website and I think they have a store in California. I also use Golden lol

I'm sorry I missed this! I did have a question about corrugated cardboard. When I was in high school (way back in the olden days 😅) I was told not to use cardboard to paint or draw on because it is acidic and the art won't last. But lately I've seen a lot of people using cardboard, saying it's a way to recycle, etc and whenever I ask them, they say cardboard is safe. What do you guys think?

If you layer it with gesso, you should be fine! It is a weaker base than most other materials though, like wood, canvas, etc. - Mia, Art Prof Staff

as soon as i see Dee's comment i am like "the paper can be as archival as it wants lol, lightfastness has to do with the sun light fading the color, not the paper the color is on." but on all of this, oh man this makes it seem like all my art is just gonna live in my mind forever and possibly never exist elsewhere.
