I've done that, but I never use this rod or reel anymore. The rod got replaced, and the replacement broke twice more. The reel sometimes ignores the drag setting and just free spools sometimes. Always ends up in my fly line being a big old knot inside the reel. So it's been permanently shelved.
Great review. Thanks! The Ultralight Rod is $55. The Trout Lite is $85 and worth the extra $30. You may want to put a rubber O Ring between the nut and the band. That should tighten it up. I really like the MaxCatch Avid Pro reels for freshwater and the occasional salt. The fully sealed HVC and Sparta reels are great for saltwater.
@baileymoto honestly, I'd recommend spending more on a different brand. I've had so much trouble with this rod and reel combo that I couldn't in good faith recommend it. If you also want to get bass and trout, I'd go with one of the venture fly Co. Starter kits. They are good.
Even with all the problems I've had with this rod, maxcatch has replaced everything that broke or that I didn't like, but only when I messaged them through Amazon haha, I really like the feel of this rod too! Just have very little confidence in it :)
Remove some of the backing so you will have more clearance for the gly line in the reel

Thanks for the tip!
Looking at these for small water; panfish. Would you recommend the trout light over the ultra lite? I’m very much a beginner.

Can't tell you how many times I've intertwined my rods like that lol I feel your pain!

@HalfInsaneOutdoorGuy fortunately I have never broke a rod myself.. but it's one of those things I fear... "not a matter of if"
