Hey, on my electronics, my LCD screens on my meters for work I usually get screen protectors for ipad or Samsung tablets and cut the protector to fit the LCD screen. You can't really tell they are on there once you put them on. Just my way to protect them from scratches. Just thought I'd share a small tip.
Ok - This is all great....BUT, please tell me how you "quickly" respond WITH the other persons callsign when responding? The Macros are great but how would you carry out a contact without being able to input their calling stations callsign? By the time you were to add it to a set Macro - they would be long gone. So, while this is all neat an stuff how is this worked into the QSO flow? Thanks for any insight!!
OH LOOK... we have another menu ! 😁 LOL.... Everytime I use my 7300 I find something NEW lurking in that radio. You sold me on this rig with your Review way back when, and I've never regretted that choice. Plus, amazing how the price continues to drop... 73 Buddby !! N4BRM
The IC-7300 continues to amaze me with it's endless abilities and features! I have always been a fanatic about leaving the screen protectors on until they fall off too. I have even had equipment I'd never take out of the box to use because I didn't want to clean it if it got fingerprints on it or run the batteries down...lmao! But I have since changed my ways in my older days. I have found very few possessions are going to be with you your entire life. If you have it, use it! New things will come out to replace it more than likely. So off with the screen protectors and enjoy!
Interesting. I have yet to explore RTTY on my 7300 but in thinking about a QSO how do you respond to a caller? Say you call CQ and receive a reply and now you want to answer the reply. You have to go into memory and edit in order to reply? Very time consuming. The calling station may just move on thinking you can't hear them :( I wish they had a freeform mode where you type and it sends immediately as you type or after pressing a send button.. Know what i mean?
I'm loving my IC7300. Bought it for contesting and digital. I haven't found a good tutorial on usiing the IC7300 on RTTY with N1MM+. Yes, N0PIR has one, but his is to scattered around to really suit me, and I think he leaves some parts out.....and on the screen protector, I got my unit last summer on the day of the solar eclipse in August, and I just removed it this weekend, so I had on over a year. I wish there was a replacement in order to keep the front TFT panel in pristine condition. Enjoy it! 73 Harvey KM4JA
Icom should have thought to allow you to plug a keyboard into the IC-7300 through the USB port to allow you to transmit free text in RTTY without having to use a computer. I'd rather not be limited to a handful of fixed macros. 73 VE7NDE
Exactly. Icom is doing the same thing Nikon is doing: Reserving relatively basic features like USB keyboard connectivity for the high end models, so you have to pay three times the price just to be able to type RTTY responses. Granted, the 7610 also does PSK, but yet again, nobody believes that this requires extra hardware only found in the 7610. It's purely to differentiate the models because otherwise nobody would spend 3k on a 7610. Love the 7300, it's still my main radio, but this still infuriates me. At least give us a paid upgrade option to do RTTY and PSK with a keyboard. Also before anyone helpfully suggests to just connect a PC: If that's your solution, why even put a waterfall display on this radio, or any display for that matter? Just connect it to a PC, right? No. Being able to do RTTY and PSK without a PC is a great thing to have. Having to connect a PC is always extra hassle.
HI ERIC, I DON,T HAVE MY GENERAL CLASS TICKET YET, WHICH I AM WORKING ON GETTING . BUT I WANTED TO CHECK OUT THE IC-7300, WHICH FOUND IT,S WAY TO MY FRONT DOOR STEP VIA UPS. JUST ABOUT SOME 5 HOURS AGO. AND AM FINDING IT TO BE A GREAT RECIEVER, CAN,T WAIT TO GET THAT GENERAL ,, 73... FROM N3NDX.... 07-31-2019...
I'm wondering if you've ever done a video on how to set the 7300 to use with WSJT-X wspr, ft8, or jt65. If not, could you do one, please? I'm having a very difficult time trying to get it to work in spite of people telling me how easy it supposedly is.
HI ERIC,, DID KNOW ABOUT THE NEW ICOM -IC-9700.. LOOKS LIKE THE IC-7300 BUT MORE UP TO DATE,, CHECK HER OUT.. I WANT TO SEE YOU REVIEW IT.. FROM N3NDX 73S. -01-19-2010.
Not gonna lie, as soon as that protective plastic was removed, I hit the thumbs up button. I can live with not having an SD card in the slot if you insist.
I just tried the built in RTTY and PSK31 in the Icom 7610. The 7610 has memories for both modes and can decode for both mode, plus you can hook up a USB keyboard and type on both modes. It’s good to demonstrate that the 7610 can send and receive RTTY and PSK31 without a computer, but that tiny screen isn’t practical at all. I’m trying to get HRD and Digital Master 780 working yet to transmit the digital modes and CW. I can connect to the HRD Rig Controller to display my frequency, and Digital Master 780, but for some unknown reason, I can transmit the digital modes or CW when connected with the one USB cable between the black USB connector on the back of the 7610 and my computer. Did you have any trouble getting HRD setup with your 7300?
I love my 7300, but if there's one thing I hate about icom is how they artificially limit their "low end" products. It would not be a problem for them to have USB support for an external keyboard to allow for full rag chewing. But no, we're lucky to get TX MEM I guess. Can't have people buy a 7300 and replace the 7600 with that, no no no. If you want to plug in a keyboard, you have to get a 76xx. Grrrr...
7610 or 7300 for an HF Base Station? I can afford both, but have read conflicting information about the comparison. Is the 7610 premium justified by features and performance over the 7300?
May I ask the retail price of this radio. Because I find that new radios are far beyond my ability to pay for them. Even used radios are priced way too high
OLD technical point from 1970s, when TTL logic chips (HAL ST-5/ST-6) were first used for RTTY, then CW. RTTY (5-bit, Baudot) is machine created, so decoding is far easier. CW that is human generated is wildly inconsistent ... which is problematic for machine decoding. Machine created CW (like from keyboard) is easier to decode, as long as 3:1 ratio maintained.
w9gb but there’s CW decoder on computers (not always 100% accurate due to human factor, mesure, but still they don’t exist). So it would be great to not have to go through a computer for that kind of feature. My 2¢
I know a bit about the 7300, but not a lot. I was pleasantly surprised that it had RRTY decode and memory transmit. Does it do the same with CW or other digi's ? Usually CW is featured first on radios with decode abilities like the Kenwood 590sg.
Eric, another great video. Quick question please. I notice your M. Scope does not have a lot of the white noise. How did you take the blue dot off (white noise) so that the screen look so clean?
So all your messages have to be preset in memory? Be nice if you could just interface a usb keyboard and type on the fly :) Sorta like texting...Make RTTY social media for nerds! :)
LOL most the thumbs up are just for removing the screen protector probably. lol, it did something to me ahhaha. Nothing more satisfying than freshly peeled electronics
Well I consider it 2 months of cleanliness on the screen, as I have used this radio only a couple times since I got it. So by now the screen would have had dust on it. Once I get it smudged like my Ipad, then I dont care anymore really. My flatscreen still has plastic around the frame edges. It is 5 years old. When I decide to sell it and upgrade, I pull the plastic off and call it "mint" haha
I think RTTY would be great fun to experiment with but everytime I decode it all I get is this same garbage. Just sending call signs and signal reports...I'd rather watch paint dry! What a shame and waste.

Where do I go, online for training or to get the training materials?
thank you - i hadnt been able to get my 7300 to decode rtty, your instruction really helped - thanks !!

RTTY contest happening so always good to see it being used. :)
Catching upon some videos. Another great one, Eric!

@@ToumalRakeshOr there should be an option on this rig to input free text in RTTY using a CW keyer of all things.
Thanks again..another great vidio as I didn't know about this option but now I use it alot. Is there any thing this great radio can't do

The decode RTTY is really cool, but can it decode simple CW? Thank you for your very informative videos>
I just bought an R8600 which is your 7300's mate so this was good to learn from-thanks!
Can you connect a keyboard to it?
Maybe you could have used an exacto knife to cut the excess screen protector material away
You can maybe find a glass or polymer cellphone screen protector instead of the protective wrap you had on there
I'm wondering if you've ever done a video on how to set the 7300 to use with WSJT-X wspr, ft8, or jt65. If not, could you do one, please? I'm having a very difficult time trying to get it to work in spite of people telling me how easy it supposedly is.

I'm not sure why they did this. I'd have much rather had a decoder for CW than RTTY.
You're telling us that it doesn't have both?

You should have put the screen protector back on at the end of the video. Thanks for sharing by the way.

Great! I wish they would also have an onboard CW decoder (it would be a great tool for newbies like me)

You will see the difference on the waterfall.

Hehe -dont worry - you can always buy new onces from ebay (screen protectors).... -I was thinking about doing it for my IC-7300 when I get it... -AP!
