The gear you have doesn’t matter if you don’t have the skills to operate... i know that from my experience as a guitar player... i can tell you the infatuation about gear is the same among musicians... by the way I’m really happy with my X-T3 ;)
@David.. yeah we all know this amigo.. but..... let us drool over gear and come up with elaborate excuses to convince ourselves that we NEED the latest and greatest and it will make us better photographers.... lmao.
Price is also exponential increases to quality. Some customs shop Fenders I've heard to be garbage. A vintage modified squier is a good starting point. Probably not any lower that that though. Is debatable if anyone would pick the right guitar in a blind test. At least it's not 20x (or however much the price difference) better, more like 110% better.
Just moved from a full frame Canon to Fuji XT4. Excited to get out and use it. Too many people focused on the ability to crop in as a safety net vs building the skills to get the shot right to begin with. Great video! Most of my favourite photographs and some videos were shot with less than what the XT4 offers
it's crazy how well thought-out and articulated your opinion is on all these new gear...still grounded on the essence of photography while at the same time welcoming what comes next... thank you so much
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions It is not the hairstyle and it is not age. It is all about his personality and how he expresses. He is really timeless.
Your pantheon of insightful and thought-provoking videos are a work of art in themselves Hugh, but I spent literally the whole of this one nodding in agreement. Brilliant clarity Hugh...you said it all. Thank you.
The joy of buttons, switches, turnable things. Hardware that controls things and not just software. Sure there is a lot you can do in software but, sometimes a quick accessible setting is great. I haven't shot with any Fuji yet, but I do like how they go for an approach of making a camera look like like a camera. And that is nice! Really NICE!
I see what you mean about the "trains, cars and airplanes" situation, and how the market of cameras is going there. If you buy a car today, entry level car to zoom around in cities, well if you buy a similarly sized car from 2005, you will not see a lot of differences, except maybe the new one could have an automatic transmission, automatic lights and alerts you if someone is on the verge to pass you in your rearview mirror. That's quality of life improvements, but your 15 year old car won't go any slower... maybe it'll need a bit more attention with a manual gear box, and very littel automatization, but it overall does the exact same thing Th'as kind of the same story. Any camera that you buy that is from 2013 onwards, is basicallt very good at taking pictures, as such as you wouldn't really see the difference by taking a 2020 camera. If you bought today an X-T2, I bet you wouldn't really see a difference in picture quality with an X-T4. Colors changed a bit. the X-T4 has a more convinient screen and more thoughout controls. But that's quality of life improvement, and if you know your gear, you're just as able to take a very good photo with your now 5 years old X-T2 that you would with your X-T4. There is still big improvements in the full frame space though, so Ican see why we're still not at thesame point as trains, planes and cars
I have the X-T4. The great thing about the camera is that you can make it to be practically whatever you want it to be. It works well in many situations. For me, the camera will be mainly a workhorse video camera. I do a lot of event picture and video recordings (no, not concerts or weddings). Mine are more of the corporate and casual event kind where I want/need to capture people engaging with one another, teaching situations, and human interest. The stills and videos are used for promotional and communications purposes. I look to the X-T4 to capture special moments. Because it is light and small, I can take it anywhere without a lot of fuss. The quality of the video is great and captured internally, so I don't need to take an external recorder (unless I want to). I am sure the X-T4 will be used in many other situations. That is what makes it a really, really useful tool.
Just switched from Sony to Fuji. Got a XT4 and a XE3 with 16mm f/1.4, 23mm f/2, 56mm f/1.2 and 90mm f/2 as my wedding kit. Gotta say it may not have the same autofocus performance as the Sony but I love everything else.
Switched from FF canon to Fuji and cant say I missed carrying a brick around all day! With about 20 weddings now shot on the Fuji system i can say mirrorless cameras seem to nail the focus better and thus my images are overall sharper then FF, the Dynamic is close enough and as far as noise in low light? Well yeah there maybe a touch more in low light but for me that’s the best part the Fuji noise is a beautiful filmic style noise which i just fell in love with.
I use my x-t3 with 50 and 90mm f2 a lot for portraits. There are not many camera/lens combinations that can beat this fuji combo in quality and price. Besides the low weight of this set it is a joy to work with and excellent for travel. And because of the price quality comparison I buy every lens of fuji i like to have. So I can choose to go out with my 16-55 or a lightweight 23f2. And I totally agree. Give us fast and smart autofocus. Smart scene recognition for better lighting. Higher dynamic ranges of chips. I worked as producer and it’s nice to see the manufacturers make camera’s who shoot at 4k at 60frames. But good luck as an amateur filmer to edit 30hours of shooting. Even midsize production companies will have to spend enormous amount of money to get the hardware to edit this.
Hi Hugh. I have zoom working with Fuji’s webcam app on Mac. Takes a little code in terminal is all. Also for power if you have enough amps from your USB port the camera will draw power from that to run. It will also draw power from the internal battery but at a reduced rate. I get over six hours of online streaming before I need to change batteries. And as usual if you power off the camera it will charged over usb. I use a 3amp power hub.
I see your point but I remember when I bought my top spec car, it was a luxury and I loved it, I still do. When it comes time to replace it and that’s because it’ll be uneconomical to repair, I won’t be downgrading to a lower spec. The same model will have improved and be more expensive with new features. Camera wise I own an Xt20 and X00S and might upgrade to the X100F when one of my current cameras need replacing. Thanks for your video and best wishes 👍
In the past camera, companies brought out new models with revolutionary changes after many year’s. Today in the effort to dominate the market many manufacturers like Sony bring out a new model every year Bringing more technology and features the average enthusiast or professional many features and resolution rarely needed All this becomes very expensive if you are always chasing the latest technology
Just discovered my Pentax ltd. primes on a Leica CL with a Novoflex adapter. Man , what an eye opener, opens doors to new photographic horizons. Always great watching Your Channel.
Once again - another great, clear, thoroughly enjoyable video that is filled with real information that I need and want. Real information to consider, discuss, and compare. This is RUclips at its finest when there’s so much RUclips at its worst out there.
Hugh, this is such an important speech to give.As someone who loves cameras, and worked with them for many years,i am always interested in the direction that camera manufacture is offering us.But,simplicity is what people need to be reassured about. It is almost radical, nay heretical to suggest this.Your review of the XT-2 is a great example of a camera that will bring great joy to work with. The G5 is a bargain now.The pictures are wonderful. And also the horrific criticism of Nikon on many RUclips channels is an example of the blight of ill informed “influencers”-and the dark arts of seeding such content as a marketing weapon by companies who see such ‘alternative facts’ in the market-share wars as simply fair game. The pleasure of working without the ‘Futz’ is a big part of being directly connected to the work. Its wonderful that both Nikon and Leica allow their legacy of glass to be used in their latest creations. It is the way it should be.I have just bought a Nikon FE.What a gorgeous camera it is.I used an Arri Alexa LF with the Signature Primes and the pictures were incredible. But,you can shoot fabulous pictures with the G5.Great article.I totally agree about the Sony, but boy does it work well in low light.Onwards.
14:48 is the camera manufactures biggest fear, delivering a product you, the consumer, doesn't need to upgrade every couple of years and why we will also get a compromised camera.
Great hard-hitting no futz video. I can't explain what it is about Fujifilm that makes it such a joy to shoot. I had an X-H1 and stupidly sold it when they discontinued it. After futzing a round with Olympus and their demise, I bought an X-T4. The cost, weight, performance make Fuji an awesome system. Oh, and there is Acros. 😍🤠
I truly wish Olympus had a seat at the table. Their brilliant OM system was my introduction to serious photography in the ‘70s, and I was just beginning to like what Olympus was doing in the digital world. Fujifilm has reignited my love for photography (I got my X-T4 last month) and I feel like a kid again - but smarter, and with better, more expensive equipment. Thank you for your keen analysis and appraisal of the current line-up. As I said at the start, it’s disheartening that Olympus isn’t part of it.
Two thoughts..... 1.... in 1905 Charles Duell wanted to close the U S Patent office because everything worth having had already been invented ... 2...you are absolutely correct about the enjoyment of the photographic process... My M10P is bringing back to the simplicity, comfort, and pure enjoyment of making photographs...
Excellent video Hugh ! I would like to add one item to the list of advantages to the Fuji or equivalent system... weight. Last year when looking to move to mirrorless one of my major considerations was how to make my landscape (and wedding) kits lighter. I was tired of carrying so much weight. My choice (last year) to leave Canon wasn't that difficult, but the choice between Fuji or Sony was harder. The decision was made with both price and weight of the two systems in mind. An equivalent Sony kit being roughly twice as expensive and twice as heavy as Fuji. I would add as well that your video Hugh about the XT3 (and now the XT4) really helped in this decision. I'm not planning on grabing up a XT4, even-though there are advantages, but planning to wait for the XT5 that will come in a few years. Thank you for your videos !
When it comes to Canon I think their strategy is not as good as Sony's. There is a giant shift from stills to video happening right now though photos are still used for e commerce so Sony gets it: A7r - stills focus A7s - video focus A7 - hybrid shooter Upcoming a5 - creator on a budget. Affordable e mount lenses to choose from many sources. This to me is the winning strategy in today's market.
I have just switched from my (older) Nikon DSLR to an XT4, so thank you for confirming my choice :) P.S. Perhaps one downside you forgot to mention at the start of your video is the different sensor type and therefore RAW format that Lightroom appears to struggle with.
As an A7riii users I do see a lot of value in the X-t4. After my trip in Italy just before the outbreak A7riii with 24-70mm f2.8 GM did wonders. It's size and weight at times was annoying to carry. Fuji X-t4 with the 16-55mm F2.8 would be able to handle most of what the A7riii was able to do. However I would still need some F1.2 primes(16mm or 23mm) for some areas. Plus Pixelshift high res mode. As Trevi Fountain at 42 megapixel is breath taking. Only time in Italy I would have loved to have the A7riv. As getting more megapixel would be perfect there.
You nailed it. The perfect camera doesn't excist and it probably never will. But with each itteration manufacturers are getting closer and closer. And looking more like each other that in the end it won't matter what you pick. Also I completely agree the G9 is the closest competitor. Great handeling, fast and the oh-so underrated flippy screen. I am deeply invested into the MFT system but consider going to Fuji.
We love the G9 and GH5 for the number of things they remove from our list of worries. Tony & Chelsea Northrup just completed a comprehensive review of the X-T4 and pointed out that they had overheating problems with it recording at 4K/60p. Since we never shoot at 60fps for more than a minute (b-roll only), this is not an issue for us; nor are the concerns they expressed about AF concerns we have given what we do. One more generation... 😉
It’s a pity that the X-T4 here is reviewed mainly has a videocamera. I am a photographer, not a videographer. In my 40 years of photography I used all brands of camera and all formats. Recently I ended up with the Fuji X-T4 as, for me and my aging body, is the best compromise between portability and image quality for traveling. I remember two years ago being in India during the monsoon season, with an unusable Leica CL getting foggy on the sensor, the viewfinder and inside the lenses. With Fuji, I have weather sealing, possibility of shooting long exposures, ibis etc. all at realistic prices. For me, as a photographer, the X-T4 is the no futz zone.
I know this is a late, but thank you for all the advice you are giving on your channel. It is indeed helpful. I have just purchased the XT-4 and the XF 16-55 f2.8 R LM WR lens and hopefully will have them in a couple of days.
I imagine when Fuji decides to release the (rumored) X-H2, it will eliminate all the shortcomings you've mentioned. It really makes it hard to want to move up to full frame when Fuji is absolutely killing it with their cropped-frame cameras. The dynamic range, high ISO, and SN of that 26mp APS-C chip is pretty astounding and doesn't really give much up to full frame. Fuji cameras are gorgeous to look at and those incredible top-mounted dials puts them at the top for me (I HATE menu diving). The Canon R6 is REALLY tempting but I'm waiting to see what Fuji does with the X-H2. From my perspective, the only thing holding Fuji back is their tracking autofocus. It's not something I would use all that much but I'd really love to see it be a little more competitive with Sony's extremely "sticky" hybrid AF or even Canon's dual pixel (soon to be quad pixel) AF. We are truly spoiled with options now and it's never been harder to choose a system. For now, I'm sticking with my Pentax K5 until the dust settles.
Switched 2 weeks ago from a Nikon 7200 to the X-T4 and I'm loving it. Just going to EVF and the IBIS alone put a big smile on my face. I shoot stills, mostly seascape, coastal birds, and sunsets. The color output of this camera is fantastic. My only quibble is I actually had to look around to figure out a few things, like how to set ISO to 100. An ISO dial but no 100? What's that about? --- As always, a really good video, Hugh.
Fuji camera's base ISO is 200! I've tested it against Sony A7iii at ISO 100 for a real estate shoot. We do a lot of shadows recovery. Sony A7iii with 12-24/4 G Fujifilm X-T2 with 10-24/4 Comparable settings. I cropped and set the white balance identically and exported a set of full res jpegs for blind comparison. I'm quite a pixel peeper, but I could not tell them apart. The sharpness and detail as well as lack of noise was remarkable! I didn't expect that. Obviously when you go up to ISO 6400 then you can probably tell them apart. When doing extreme shadow and highlight pulls the dynamic range isn't comparable to A7iii which has a class leading IQ.
I currently have a Canon T3i, and I’ve been looking to upgrade to the Fujifilm XT4. This camera looks amazing for photography and for video. I’ve had my camera for over 8 years now and it’s been great, but I’m looking to upgrade. My sensor has spots I am unable to get off (I edit them in post), and some other minor issues. I’m watching a lot of reviews and trying to learn as much as possible coming from the T3i into the mirrorless world. This camera looks damn near perfect (to me), and if anyone has this camera.. would you be able to let me know how you like it (also, pros/cons). I’d greatly appreciate it! THANK YOU!
If your looking for a hybrid camera get the A7III. It is amazing with photography and really great with video. If you need a flip screen the sell a vlog mirror for it on amazon for $19 that is awesome. If you still want the flip screen wait for the Sony A7C that will be announced In September
Great video as always. I sure hope you're being prescient when you talk about a G10 with Phase Detect AF 😉 I love my G9 and would buy Phase Detect G10 without any hesitations. Cheers
Video question. Do a lot of video shooters (like vloggers) overspend because they over-complicate their tech when they could try for cleaner, simpler and more fundamental look and feel? It feels like so many try to compensate or enhance forgetting about the actual content being more important.
I have sony a7 II and i am amature photographer, architect on daily job. Interested in learning photography skills :) In terms of gear, as former pro bass player ( jazz music ), i think that person should buy best gear he can afford, but in the beginings emphasis should be on learning the art field... than, better art skills+ better understanding about gear = better results..... :) I think at the end, everything counts... :-) Great video as always :) i learned a lot :) Thank you for your time and energy to share your knowledge and thoughts about photography :)
Great video, as always Hugh. I compare this current technology generation change and era of having become accustomed to new models every year to the evolution of SLRs, and say the time it took and technology changes between the Nikon F, F2, F3, F4, F5 and F6... arguably we are at F5 evolutionary stage now with the R5/X-T4 et al, e.g. pretty much the most evolved expression of that particular generation of technology? I’d love to see the camera companies make a step change in connectivity and build 5G right into the body, for photojournalism and sports shooters that would open up new possibilities for no futz live reporting...
Great review and great points - when we get the next generation of cameras what else would we need? The next question - how will manufacturers differentiae themselves? Lenses? Most have a great system built already. Image quality? There's not a huge difference between sensors and sensor sizes. You brought up a great point early in - joy. Which cameras are just a joy to use. Which provide the least futz. So my question for you then, for an amateur and hobbyist (in the hybrid market) is the FUJI joy worth buying into, for the long run?
Thank you. I've been saving up for the xt3 and have been questioning whether I would be missing out on higher rez or dynamic range or faster this and battery . .. non of that will matter if I'm not creative.
I want a Fuji XT4. Commented on never purchasing a Leica other than a co-branded Panasonic for the G9. The 4 has the upgrades I wanted on the 3 and wasn’t there. IBIS and the flippy screen. I am a street photographer with the desire to do limited hybrid photography. The 4 isn’t the best in everything. No camera is. All cameras are a set of compromises. I can live with the Fuji compromises. Hope the camera can live with me. As with all the cameras I own, I am NOWHERE near to using all the capabilities of the cameras. I don’t even exploit the full capabilities of the features I use. I don’t need more than what I have. That being said, I will purchase a 4. The question is when? As I said, I have the all gear I need and want to do what I want and can do now. Because of the Covid thing, I’m not taking my gear out on the street. If that is the case, and it is, there is no need to make the purchase anytime soon. Woody Allen said in one of his movies it was a sin in his family to pay retail. Not wanting to sin and not having the need, this is on the back burner. I could win the lottery and visit B&H. Since my chance of winning the lottery only improve ever so slightly by actually purchasing a ticket, I won’t be doing that anytime soon. No sign of a Covid immunization . So I won’t be walking the street very much for a while. Not going to the old country this year (NYC) this year. Sigh. Focus on real estate investing to get out of nursing on my terms. Until then, just watch RUclips vids showing the way it use to be. Nurse Marty
Glad to see you praise the G9, albeit with it's known warts. It's still high on my list for pricing and other practical reasons. Did you happen to watch Philip Bloom and his XT-4 and unpredictable focus results.. I'm still not convinced though I like much about it. How do you like that Lumix 50-200?
What have you found lacking about the 16mm 1.4f linear drive? Was looking for an all arounder lens and had landed on that, but the red badge is only a minor step up. I would also love you see you take the channel in a direction about editing photos and videos and how to get the most out of them compositionally. I like your presentation style a lot. Thanks for the video.
Small chance I can grab an XT4 at a discount so.. here I am checking out another Fuji vid on your channel haha. I'd start off by getting the XT4 with the 16-55 Then I'd grab some primes you mentioned to me in previous vids. I would LOVE a Leica M11 as my walk around cam.. but.. I don't have that kind of budget for the body & lenses. Here in NYC the Subway is pretty efficient with getting ppl around.. I often find Myself preferring travel via subway vs car/bus. I do wish they'd update the interior of some of them. Looking 70's to early 80's orange & off white.. bleh.. I already have full frame and glad I have it for work. I don't want to "switch brands" really.. not going to sell my R5 & R6. I'm more looking for a different form factor & fun camera for me. It's not a "need" even.. it's a want. A few of my friends are having fun with it grabbing up a small fuji having fun with it and said I'd really enjoy Fuji a lot as a walk around cam. I could have grabbed an M50 from Canon.. but I been shooting Canon for everything for 10yrs almost now. I'd like to play with a different ecosystem and just have fun with it.
You read my mind around 3 weeks ago. I'm user of Canon since 2005 with my first reflex chemical. Looking for a mirrorless I found that Canon and their Series M they just used the cripple hammer. And with the RP and R..., Just obsolete since the first day of announcement. I was waiting for the R5/R6 and when I saw the features and the prices I feel myself being kidding. I start to find information Olympus, Fuji, Lumix and I was surprised because the possibilities that they offer on the aps-c/four thirds. Amazing. I don't need Full Frame. As the most of the people. I need enjoy and decent shutter speed, and customizing of the buttons. I jumped to the X-T4 and I cannot be more enthusiastic. I don't look forward.
Take into account that soon prices should go down after release of a7iv and r5+r6)) but yes, no 4:2:2 10 bit. and no 4k 120 p... but it's a fullframe with best autofocus and high iso capabilites. Also if continue to buy only sigma lenses actual cost of full setup not so pricey! Waiting for prices go down to go from apsc to fullframe)
I have the R IV and lots of G/GM glass; I’m potentially looking for a 2nd body for a few reasons, one of them being wanting a cheaper setup for times when I’m not comfortable walking round with potentially a £5k body/lens combo, so second hand is appealing. Every part of my sensible (financial adviser experienced) brain says a used A7 III would perfectly fit the bill, cheaper, works with current lenses, etc etc, but I can’t seem to shake the fact I want the EOS R (yes, R) and another lens (which will no doubt turn into a set of lenses). It’s a poor choice in many ways, but I keep watching those used sites! Must agree with Calvin though, tad too many adverts in this one!
A very sobering look at the state of photographic technology! I remember a time when the purpose of a camera was to hold the film flat against the plate at the back of the camera, set the aperture and shutter speed after consulting a handheld light meter, manually focus, then develop the film and make prints - cropping, dodging, burning, and using different contrast filters. The biggest drawback to the quality of the final print? Dust... Today we enjoy auto exposure, auto focusing, and instant results - and you're absolutely right that the equipment we already own is more than enough!
Yes!! To "No Futzing" [except in post -- I consider "post" creative] ----- Quality should envelope design, engineering, ease of use and a confidence in durability. It seems like common sense, but for now, we'll have to wait for the infrastructure and/or people's sensibilities to catch up. Here's to a "build your own custom quality camera" future. It can be done with some products, but it always seems more costly, less durable or both. I'll take John Candy with No Futzing! :)
Great video again Hugh. As a stills only photographer, I reached the 'good enough' stage 5 years ago when I bought my D750. I am yet to see any camera that I would prefer over it. . . I might be tempted by a D850 when it's successor is released and the price drops, but 24mp is enough really.
Id agree, 24 MP is the sweet spot. Hight enough for 95% of pro work. The rest being large poster prints. But I'd say if you go mirrorless, you'll never go back! Shooting real estate with a tilted screen, live view and wysiwyg exposure representation is such huge blessing! I can be standing up straight instead of Bending over to look through the view finder. And no surprises with the exposure!
You missed the best video image quality option on the market, priced as low as your G9 and X-T4 combos - $2900 for the Lumix S1 with 24-105 f4 "kit" lens. With the S1 full frame f4 produces depth of field as shallow as the X-T4 with f2.8. The S1 has at least a stop more dynamic range than any camera you mentioned (well...R6 DR is yet to be measured), better low light, and a better battery. Stabilization with the S1 IBIS and stabilized lens is crazy good. And no overheating, no recording limits. The full V-Log is so good pros find it can be cut seamlessly with Alexa footage - meaning no noticeable difference. It's a $2900 camera and lens that can literally be used for a high end feature film.
Its interesting that you say we are at the that 'trains, plane & automobiles moment'. It is interesting to see how Nikon and Canon are going to gain traction over the coming year. Canon has fired a full broadside with the R5 and R6 and whilst from a technical standpoint Sony is every bit as good as the Canon, both with their cameras and lenses but they consistently fall behind, when it comes to the ergonomics and menu of the camera system. It is a system, that you can admire from a technical standpoint but not love for for its personal touches. Nikon it seems have listened to the complaints about the Z6/Z7 and many of the issue will hopefully be fixed with the Z6s/Z7s and whilst this may not be a broadside, it does show intent, with the probable broadside coming with the eventual release of the Z8/9. Where Nikon and Canon for me have an advantage is not in technical specifications but years of creating great camera and whilst both stumbled on what felt like hastily put together cameras, when they went full frame. We are going to be seeing them really flex their muscles. As for Fujifilm, they will carry on as they have been. Whilst I am a Fujifilm user, I do have issues. Fujifilm it feels have grown comfortable with their lens line up. The 33mm f/1 was a balls up and to be honest I would much prefer to see a direct replacement for the 56mm f/1.2 than a 50mm f/1, which is just a little short. The fact that we don't know what will happen with the X-H line, despite for me it being by far the best form factor that Fujifilm has, also worries me. If Fujifilm don't release an X-H2, I won't be upgrading and will just go to Nikon (which I will probably do at some point anyway, but would probably stay with the X-H line and maybe X-E line). So it is a strange situation currently, Sony is in the lead but the competition is in the lead and I feel like they have a bigger hurdle to climb, getting the ergonomics than any other company.
More tougher cameras is much more important for me at least. I want a mirrorless that I can drop from 6-8 feet and it does not break. Maybe waterproof ip68 cameras? Those expensive and bulky underwater housing units are a laugh. Smartphones done that. It’s possible. In 2020 people with flagship cameras still get afraid when it’s starts raining heavily...oh no but how useful give us more frames per second and 16k video loooool
Love your channel but those comparisons are a bit moot since 2.8 on crop is not the same as 2.8 on full frame. the 16-55 2.8 is essentially the equivalent of a 24-70 f4 on FF. so perhaps try comparing a Canon 24-70 F4 IS on an EOS R (with adapter) for more apples to apples. that’s roughly around the XT4 combo you cite. it’s especially way less if you use the EOS RP.
Your contemplative monologue style is quite entertaining..... Just an observation about the 747 and A380: These aircraft became victims of corporate cost-cutting. Ask yourself or any other traveler which they would find more comfortable to take a trip in - a 777 , 787 or A380. Most would always say the latter. I know I would.... Best regards
George Livanos I second that. Love flying on the A380, sorry to see it go. Unfortunately it seems it was introduced perhaps 10 years too late. Kind of reminds me of the APS cameras that were quickly superseded by the digital cameras.
Thank you for this video.. .exactly what I was looking for.... I am struggling to choose between the XT4 and EOS R6 and leaning towards the XT4 more and more....
I really want to get this camera but the autofocus problems I’ve been seeing and the wobble from the ibis really turns me away from it’s such a great well rounded camera with great features that I really need but those 2 things I really can’t sacrifice.
At 17:10 don't forget to mention Air France's Concorde too! That's typical English-centric reasoning! Remember: Concorde's fuselage and wings were designed and assembled by Sud Aviation (Toulouse - France) and was a super Mirage IV (Dassault Aviation - France). Landing gears were Messier-Bugatti-Hispano-Suiza built a few kilometers from here in Molsheim (France). OK the motors were British (Rolls-Royce). Considering fast trains US bought TGV (in French: Train à Grande Vitesse made by Alsthom Transport - France) for east coast ; infrastructure was not so costly, especially considering ecologic impact. That's the true worldwide-centric history. Oh BTW, don't forget Alsthom Energie stolen by the GE-DoJ gang, 'cause we don't!
Edit: Hey, as a music video guy, tell me how I should spend my money. S1, S1R, X-T4, or other? I’ve never had auto focus on my A-Cam (manual focus for an entire shoot day got old fast on my 7D) & I need more dynamic range so I can save more footage on run and gun shoots. I’m angry! I was sold on the S1 or the S1R used, and then I watched this video. Now I’m back to thinking about the X-T4 versus the field based on your points. I’m upgrading from a Canon 7D and I just want dynamic range, 4k60p with a small or no crop, IBIS, and decent autofocus for gimbal work.
Can you wait? Sony and Nikon announcements are rumored. Small video will likely heat up more in the coming year. What's your budget? Are you able to rent before buying? ------ Canon R6 has everything, but overheats in 30 mins. Nikon Z6 is missing 60p. Sony a7siii is a question mark but will likely work. Fuji Xt4, see above video, biggest issue is stepped aperture adjustments and af problems with old lenses, Oly em1 or 5iii loses 60p, but best ibis in the business. Panasonic S1 works if you're ok with aps-c crop in 60p and questionable AF. Or wait for gh6. Give up ibis/AF and the sigma FP(no 60p), BMPCC series, Zcam E2, and kinefinity terra become options. Relax on size and the JVC ls300 (need recorder for 60p), fs700 and c200 become options. ZCam E2 is the most attractive of these, 4k120 full readout and an impressive WDR mode (16 stops claimed) in exchange for more rolling shutter.
1fareast14 Love your comment! Thanks. My budget is $2350-Ish for body and lens unless I have to sell my Canon 7D, battery grip, 50mm lens, 24mm lens, and all my compact flash cards (I’d keep my 7D if I can upgrade for under $2350). I need IBIS and better dynamic range (low light isn’t a top 3 priority anymore because I’ve finally invested in more lighting and some extension cords) to improve my quality. 4k60 is key even if I have to submit to a 1.5x crop (Panasonic S1) because most of my video shoots never 100% go to plan and 60p can save me when certain scenes fall apart. The Z Cam brand and the black magic brand would be great if I could get some decent photography out of those sensors. I’ve been turning down photoshoots lately, but I’d like to accept more photoshoots or start back doing weddings next year. I hear that the S1 has a tap to focus like feature that would make my manual focusing more efficient, but u til I buy it or rent it, I’m not sure that the S1 is my choice (it’s a front runner though). I’m anti Nikon for bias reasons. Unless you hit me up side the head with more logic, I’m leaning toward the S1. The Fuji looks like a good option, but I keep thinking about when I chose the cropped 7D over the 5DII years ago. I’m thinking I should go full frame this time.
@@KhariConception Cool. hybrid cuts a lot of choices. Unfortunately, DSLR aps-c is a trap, only Pentax has a decent lineup. That being said, how loyal are you to the 24mm and 50mm lenses? If they are full frame, a c100(4k to HD downsample is nice) or c200b on eBay may give you more use. I say this despite anti-canon bias on my part. You could also wait for r6 price to drop and adapt onto that. I love Panasonic and the great execution of the G9 and S1. But you will need new lenses for the S1, so the budget would have to increase. You could buy FF vintage glass and adapt that? The bigger issue is that 4k is just a word, the container holds more or less detail depending on camera. 5d4 will be miles worse than an fx9. The 4k60 S1 crop isn't terrible, but worse then the almost full sensor of, say the xt3. See the dpreview charts. That crop is from a Sony sensor limitation. The S1 successor is bound to have full sensor 4k60. You will be stuck with an obsolete body whose price has tanked, especially if pdaf is added. How dead set are you on 4k60? Good hd60 not enough? Unfortunately, few cheap cameras have that. Used gh5 + a lens or two may just squeeze into your budget. My overall advice is to envision your final lens system. The lenses should guide your system purchasing. Look on camerasize, read the reviews on sharpness, CA, focus breathing.
I'd take manual focus over Panasonic tap to focus, personal experience. I just realized that you had 2k + the body, and not forced to sell. Would you prefer to sell it and consolidate to one system? Also, your video will suffer if you go with a hires camera like the S1r, readout involves binning or skipping. If you're happy with that sort of output, then proper hd60 should be fine, which increases your options.
Hi! Just discovered this channel and really love your videos! I'm struggling to decide between the xt4 and the sony a7c (also watched your videos on it) for primarily video based work (not vlogging - mainly music videos and short films). Very attracted to the form factor and colours of the fuji but can't decide whether the full frame and autofocus of the sony makes it a more sensible choice... any advice would be very appreciated! Cheers :)
Wondering which system you chose. I had the a7c and wasn’t loving the photos I was making. Just got the X-T4 and just made some of the best photos of my life on first use at my daughter’s graduation.
@@vivlund went with the xt-4 I’m the end and so glad I did, especially for photography it’s just such a nice camera to use and I love all the physical controls. I think in sacrificing the full frame and autofocus advantages of the A7C, everything else about the xt-4 is better.. and for me the jpegs straight out of camera are already pretty good!
Very thoughtful reflection Sire. I liked your Concorde comparison which is really on point. However, I think Fuji and mostly Panasonic have very unreliable, erratic video autofocus which let them big room for improvement -XT3 user here for shy of 2 years. Greetings from Spain.
Autofocus is the single biggest issue for Panasonic. Biggest issues for the X-T4 are inherently smaller in one way, bigger in another: upgrading video-centric features so that it can reliably record all of those formats unlimited; add a headphone jack; and upgrade some of their glass to operate as quickly, quietly and smoothly as the best lenses from Nikon and Sony. Thanks for weighing in!
I think a lot of gear junkies who are trying to shake off COVID19 cabin fever will be falling for the hype of the R5 and 8K video. I feel bad for them. Do they realize how much time they'll spend editing in front of a computer screen (and buying new storage media)? Hopefully, you will have helped some of them avoid this mistake.
His commentary about Planes Trains and Automobiles is very close to right on. Right now I am using now medium age DSLR's (D500 mostly / D5) and the AF is so good on them that I will not go backwards. What I want is a better hybrid camera (good video AF and necessary ports) with AF as good or better than what I have. Right now, really only the Sony A9 / A9II offers that. Maybe the new Canon R5/R6. I suspect in one generation, you will be able to get that from anyone. That is why I am patiently waiting for Nikon to deliver or for someone else to check all the boxes besides Sony. I actually think Sony's are amazing but it really is too much to switch if I can wait awhile and move my glass along with Nikon. Besides, I don't like their ergonomics. This XT4 is a good candidate, but I don't think the AF will keep up with my fast moving subjects as well as what I already have. I suspect that the Fuji is one or two firmware updates from the promised land. Someday soon I will get what I want and not have to go backwards with AF or spend a small fortune on Sony.
I WOULD like the more confident AF of the XT4 , and I do enjoy the Fuji layouts and colours. But the sheer cost/benefit of swapping an entire M43 system? With the G9, Em5iii, PL15, Oly 75, PL Noctricron, Oly 40-150 Pro, PL 12-60 and several Oly 1.8 primes, it becomes very difficult to see an economic argument for the Xt4. Because it's literally not just about the camera body. If anything, a jump to a GFX and a prime may make more sense in the cost/gain area. For me.
I will add that I disagree with one point: I don't want computational dof/bokeh wizardry. I want there to be a "reality" to physical lens design and creative use of aperture and character. I think we lose something inherent to the craft of photography, and the rewards for using and understanding our gear, if it's all done in software cleverness. "Oh wow, beautiful rendering and falloff! 35mm summicron?" "No, one touch Google Pixel 8 with the Leica Simulation Vintage Colour App and background generator cloning tool ". It just ain't right.
This is such a well thought out detailed review. Thank you for this! Anyway what lens do you recommend for video? A bunch of f2 primes or 16-55mm f2.8? I heard the f2 primes autofocus is good to begin with
I'm really struggling with the decision of moving from my a7ii to the xt-4. I think I'll like the Fuji for documenting my life and travel camera. But I'm afraid it won't be good enough professional weddings, events and product photography especially in regards to low light capabity and overall image quality.
Yu Shaun X-T3 shooter here 🙋🏽♂️ if you are already invested in the Sony lens line up, it may make more sense to stick to their ecosystem. However that being said, Fuji is definitely “good enough” for weddings, certain product photography & the sensor is pretty good in lowlight, not the best, but not the worst. Hope that helps.
You'll find it good enough for weddings and events. I shoot those with Fuji cameras and the X-Pro3 is very good at focusing fast in low light. Kevin Mullins is a very successful Fujifilm wedding photographer. I've found the advantage is that you can mix better with the guests with the smaller, retro looking Fuji cameras and get more candid stuff. For product photography Jonas Rask does some good stuff too. Like Micah says though, if you're happy in your current eco-system you may want to stick there, but there's a lot to be said for getting an X100V for travel and life photography. You can then use it alongside your Sony kit for wedding candids, which it excels at.
Peter Evans everything you said was spot on, especially the x100v; since Yu Shaun said he likes Fuji to document his life. 35mm is a perfect focal length for that job!
My trio is 23 1.4, 35 1.4, and 56 1.2 and life is grand. I can do anything that I need, though I do occasionally have an itch for something wider like the 16 1.4. (23 and 35 aren't massively different for FOV, but I could never decide which to drop.) Honestly, for events and portraits, I think the ideal would be a TWO lens setup with the 23 and the 56. Have two bodies (if you're able) and you could fluidly transition back and forth as required. Or work modally and shift gears back and forth on a single body - concentrating on one aspect for stretches at a time to focus the mind. That always works for me.
Why were you comparing a crop sensor 2.8 kit (equivalent DOF less shallow than full frame f4) to full frame 2.8 kits? And a lot of people own loads of canon or nikon full frame lenses, and the adaptors are near native lens reliable. And Sony is mature enough to have a used market on it's own.
@@3BMEP I meant it as a compliment because he is a universal treasure and I dare say so are you. Thank you for your answer and amazing contents. Have a great day, love from a Brazilian in Estonia =]
The Sony a7iii and Fujifilm xt4 are not remotely equivalent in iso performance, thus a 2.8 lens on the Sony will be much more flexible than a 2.8 lens on the Fujifilm. I had an a7iii and an xt3--the Sony was a little less than 2 stops better in iso performance (don't know if the xt4 is better than the xt3 in this regard). A more fair comparison considering DOF and ISO performance is the a7iii with the 24-105 f4 VS the Fujifilm xt4 and 16-55 f2.8. Price and performance and weight will be about the same. But if you want to grow Fujifilm has nothing to compare to the Sony g masters like the 24mm, 85mm, 135mm, etc. Of course if 10 bit video is your thing, then Fuji is better, for now. But if low light video is your thing, Sony is still more flexible.
The gear you have doesn’t matter if you don’t have the skills to operate... i know that from my experience as a guitar player... i can tell you the infatuation about gear is the same among musicians...
by the way I’m really happy with my X-T3 ;)
@David.. yeah we all know this amigo.. but..... let us drool over gear and come up with elaborate excuses to convince ourselves that we NEED the latest and greatest and it will make us better photographers.... lmao.
The same judgement Squier Bullet Strats get until a proficient guitarist picks one up and makes it sound like they were playing a custom shop
Bblablablaaaaaa
Had full frame DSLRs for the last 3+ years. Switched to X-T4. Literally amazing considering the size.
3 years ?
Just moved from a full frame Canon to Fuji XT4. Excited to get out and use it. Too many people focused on the ability to crop in as a safety net vs building the skills to get the shot right to begin with. Great video! Most of my favourite photographs and some videos were shot with less than what the XT4 offers
It is not the hairstyle and it is not age. It is all about his personality and how he expresses.
He is really timeless.
it's crazy how well thought-out and articulated your opinion is on all these new gear...still grounded on the essence of photography while at the same time welcoming what comes next... thank you so much
Hugh. I think now is the time to finally say: I will never forgive you for having perfect hair and never seeming to age.
Jeff Glickman Oh, I age! 😜
I'm maybe half his age and still am jealous...
It is not the hairstyle and it is not age. It is all about his personality and how he expresses.

It's not that complicated. He's just a handsome stylish dude! Ageless, a bit like Sean Connery.
Your pantheon of insightful and thought-provoking videos are a work of art in themselves Hugh, but I spent literally the whole of this one nodding in agreement. Brilliant clarity Hugh...you said it all. Thank you.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
One of my favourite 80's films.
Thought you made some great points,
really enjoyed this episode :)
That's quality of life improvements, but your 15 year old car won't go any slower... maybe it'll need a bit more attention with a manual gear box, and very littel automatization, but it overall does the exact same thing
Th'as kind of the same story.
Enjoy!
Sounds like the used market would be a good place to get a"well rounded" system, at a good price. Excellent video!
Thanks, Kim. The No Futz Zone ethic demands that I not futz with terminal mode at all. But I understand it DOES work with Zoom now no problem 😊🙏🏻

First time for me to encounter true value for time, in the essence of gear review. What a quality... Thank you !!
Glad to be of service. 😊
Always a well-thought, pleasant watch ! Great image quality... thanks for all the comparisons.
Glad to be of service. 😊
In the past camera, companies brought out new models with revolutionary changes after many year’s.
Today in the effort to dominate the market many manufacturers like Sony bring out a new model every year
Bringing more technology and features the average enthusiast or professional many features and resolution rarely needed
All this becomes very expensive if you are always chasing the latest technology
Just discovered my Pentax ltd. primes on a Leica CL with a Novoflex adapter. Man , what an eye opener, opens doors to new photographic horizons. Always great watching Your Channel.
Takuan very cool!
"...unwilling... to keep riding the upgrade merry-go-round..." Perfectly phrased, and it's truths must be considered.
Don’t know if Panasonic and Nikon were listening to you, but you just described the G9ii and the Z6ii. Love the channels and the tone! Keep up Hugh!
😎👊🏻🖖🏻
Once again - another great, clear, thoroughly enjoyable video that is filled with real information that I need and want. Real information to consider, discuss, and compare. This is RUclips at its finest when there’s so much RUclips at its worst out there.
Thank you for your encouragement!
Hugh does great conversation that's not a sales presentation.
Manual glass tends to do that as well. - cheers
Enjoy!
So timely, as I just bought this - and your mellifluous tones are so reassuring, quite apart from the good review.
Glad to be of service. 🙏🏻😊
Gandalf of Cameras - that's your new title I'm giving you Hugh 👍 Just the right thoughts at exactly the right time.

I listemed to your narationed 3 times and your message is buy XT-4.
My dear friend, I got it.
😉
I am going to order that book. Looks interesting and with big artistic value.
When it comes to Canon I think their strategy is not as good as Sony's. There is a giant shift from stills to video happening right now though photos are still used for e commerce so Sony gets it:
A7r - stills focus
A7s - video focus
A7 - hybrid shooter
Upcoming a5 - creator on a budget.
We were going to get to the point of sufficiency, 18:00 glad to hear your take on it
As an A7riii users I do see a lot of value in the X-t4.
I love shooting my Leica glass with the xt4 for street.
Niiice!
Giulio Zanni Enjoy! If you haven’t already seen it, I suggest you look at my review of the X-T2 for photography!
I enjoyed this essay greatly. My X-H1 stays. For now.
The X-H1 really has a soul. I love it.
I would love to go with Fujifilm over canon but it's a hard decision with all the lens choices with of the EF/RF lenses
I know this is a late, but thank you for all the advice you are giving on your channel. It is indeed helpful. I have just purchased the XT-4 and the XF 16-55 f2.8 R LM WR lens and hopefully will have them in a couple of days.
Great combo - enjoy!
Sony A7iii with 12-24/4 G
Fujifilm X-T2 with 10-24/4
Comparable settings.
I sure hope you're being prescient when you talk about a G10 with Phase Detect AF 😉
I love my G9 and would buy Phase Detect G10 without any hesitations.

Video question. Do a lot of video shooters (like vloggers) overspend because they over-complicate their tech when they could try for cleaner, simpler and more fundamental look and feel? It feels like so many try to compensate or enhance forgetting about the actual content being more important.
YES.
. . . . and don't pay enough attention to audio quality.
@@peterlemke3468 That's where we have put most of our attention.
I'll likely add an X-T4 to my current set-up. I'll wait for the fall sales...
I have sony a7 II and i am amature photographer, architect on daily job. Interested in learning photography skills :)
In terms of gear, as former pro bass player ( jazz music ), i think that person should buy best gear he can afford, but in the beginings emphasis should be on learning the art field... than, better art skills+ better understanding about gear = better results..... :)
I think at the end, everything counts... :-)
Great video as always :) i learned a lot :)
Thank you for your time and energy to share your knowledge and thoughts about photography :)
I think we are one full hardware generation away from convergence across sensor formats. We will see!

Xt3 with kit lens is $1100 and Lumix S1 is $1300 open box right now on Samys.
Clickumentary 50-200 is reason enough to buy into m43 - brilliant!
I'd start off by getting the XT4 with the 16-55
Then I'd grab some primes you mentioned to me in previous vids.
I don't look forward.
elruben Zaragoza enjoy!
Another killer combo is a Sony A7iii + Sigma DG DN Art 24-70 f2.8 for around $3k.

Such a lovely video!
Now we have a new X-T4 - FILMWARE UPDATE 1.03
Cool. Thanks. Looks like IBIS improved.
I really like the S1; the 24-105 not so much.
Great contribution to the discussion. Thanks!
Very good points made, at this point my decision will be made based on price and Esthetics.
Sounds good to me.
I think you just convinced me to buy the X-S10 instead of the X-T4. Woops!
Enjoy!
Just a thought… the reason why they don’t put all that into one camera is for business purposes companies want you to keep buying.
As usual very informative and enjoyable video. Thank you 👍

Point taken!
I suggest you wait to see what the R6 is in reality. In theory, it does address several of the X-T4's shortcomings.
I also a choice r6 or xt4 body
This dude is amazing..
I really want to get this camera but the autofocus problems I’ve been seeing and the wobble from the ibis really turns me away from it’s such a great well rounded camera with great features that I really need but those 2 things I really can’t sacrifice.
One more generation of just about any of them...
Excellent! Thank you for the additional context!
------
Canon R6 has everything, but overheats in 30 mins.
What about also considering an A7III + Sigma 24-70 2.8 kit = $2800-$3000
It is difficult to consider this channel as just a camera gear channel. Even a normal video contains so much unrelated but good information.
🙏🏻🖖🏻
Any thoughts on the X-T3 with the new updated firmware, against the X-T4?
If IBIS matters to you, X-T4 (it does to me). If budget is constrained, X-T3.
I heard the f2 primes autofocus is good to begin with
rizfebriansyah 16-55 is much more flexible + the benefits of the best & silent Fuji auto focusing motors
16-55 for video.
@@3BMEP Alright thank you!
@@EpitomePax alright i think imma go with the 16-55 thanks!
I would like too get my first camara but don’t know which one to get xt4 vs eos r6 but r6 lens are very expensive but better auto

Still a great, good value camera love mine 📷🇬🇧
@@EpitomePax ... sound advice.
Thanks guys really appreciate the advice. I'll be looking into buying an x100v.
What 3 lenses for Fujifilm would you recommend for portraits (outdoors) and events?
I would say 16 mm 1.4, 35 1.4, and 56 1.2. That would be a great trio!
My trio is 23 1.4, 35 1.4, and 56 1.2 and life is grand. I can do anything that I need, though I do occasionally have an itch for something wider like the 16 1.4. (23 and 35 aren't massively different for FOV, but I could never decide which to drop.)
Honestly, for events and portraits, I think the ideal would be a TWO lens setup with the 23 and the 56. Have two bodies (if you're able) and you could fluidly transition back and forth as required. Or work modally and shift gears back and forth on a single body - concentrating on one aspect for stretches at a time to focus the mind. That always works for me.
28, 35, 50mm
If I get this, I’ll keep my Sony for unlimited recording times
Why were you comparing a crop sensor 2.8 kit (equivalent DOF less shallow than full frame f4) to full frame 2.8 kits?
And a lot of people own loads of canon or nikon full frame lenses, and the adaptors are near native lens reliable. And Sony is mature enough to have a used market on it's own.
Tacticalderp I’ve mentioned this elsewhere: image quality, price, size. Please take a look through the comments.
Hey, I really love your content and your pictures. I have a funny question: do you have any family ties to Jeff Goldblum? You sound a lot like him
None of which I am aware. I get this a LOT. He's a wonderful actor.
