- I believe there's a home out there for every greyhound, but for some it takes a while longer to find the perfect match. In this video I take a look at why some grey's end up spending longer in kennels before being adopted. Could you be the one to take a long stayer home?

I adopted 4 Greys from Ireland so far, and all of them were not the 'first choise' of people. Either because they were black, ( !!!!), or not very young, or too nervous/shy/ , male, and all these stupid reasons.I have been very very lucky to be part of Fiona, Zoe, Mikey and Bluebell's lives.
I had my heart set on getting a 'big black dog', but ended up fostering a red brindle - which would have been my last choice of colour. But he won my heart, and I can't imagine any other dog taking up 99% of my couch now. :p
How wonderful :-) sadly there are so many black ones, and they are definitely harder to home especially if they are male
the right dog can come in many colours!
We adopted a “spook”. It has taken a while (4 years or so) to make a confident dog of him but he is the most enchanting soul! I can’t imagine life without him. We spent the first 4 months in the Maine snow walking in an endless circle around a fallen tree with him on lead. This is what he wanted and it calmed him. I would do it again in a heartbeat!! I wish all these lovely dogs had homes. Thank you for all that you do.
I wish that too pam 🐾🐾🏡♥️
Bless you all :-) spooks are just delightful as they come out of their shell
Yes, all the greyhounds deserve a chance, especially the overlooked ones. I very much agree. Thank you!
Absolutely!
I am 3wks into rehoming my latest Greyhound and he was one of the dogs that didn`t `sell himself` when prospective owners were looking around due to his nervousness He is an absolute delight and every little hurdle that we cross together successfully, feels as though i have won the lottery!
I know this to be very true as many dogs that are overlooked and nobody seems to want very often turn out to be the best dogs ever and it's the same with a runt of a litter nobody wants the runt but facts say many runts have ended up champions in all sorts of dog shows including cruffts that's not an opinion it's factual ♥️🐾🐾 godbless
I can definitely testify to that!
it can be extra rewarding, and helps you build a really special bond. I always try to explain to people they may not be brave with you at the start - see what they are like with those they already know to get a better idea of what the future may hold
@@jwcaninecare that's the best way jw ❤️ a very good friend of mine I've known all my life since early childhood (I'm now 50+) has always had the breed he wouldn't ever have a different breed of dog this is why I know they make such good companions and are fantastic dogs if they are given that chance I'm a blue staffy owner but I know a little bit about breeds and these dogs get very unfairly overlooked and they have such a sweet nature about them especially wen they trust u and get to know u ❤️🐾🐾🥰
My 5yr old dog was at the rehoming kennels for 7 months - apparently black males are the hardest to rehome as everyone wants a "cute" tiger, rather than a "boring" black one. My dog also has a few puppy scars on his back, which probably didnt help his cause. However, I wasnt bothered about colours of scars.... I fell in love with his ears, which always seems to sit in a loveheart formation. I am so grateful that were judged to be a suitable home for him - he is perfect
He sounds perfect :-) I am a sucker for a cute pair of ears, preferably black ones!
Having fostered, and then adopted my boy, I really see the value of introducing a dog into a foster home for a decent while before adopting. For the first few weeks, my boy was very withdrawn. He had to learn stairs, he had to learn new routines, get used to there being no dogs around, learn to play. I almost felt as if he was waiting for someone to come and pick him up and take him back to the kennels. And then one day, maybe when enough time had passed, or he realised that things were only getting better for him, he just started wagging his tail more, and responding more, and getting more confident. I think a dog that's been out of racing for a little while is going to be an amazing pet, with all the hard work done for you!
Fostering can be a real benefit for some of them and give them a great head start at retirement
Greyhound adoption is almost nonexistent here now. My girl came to me after the closing of race facilities and being a super jumper, she needed good encloser. Finding another greyhound is almost impossible for me as they are rare now. I am sad for the breed as I find them so wonderful. As she is certainly over 15, we have spent many years together and have not seen another greyhound around here.
Where are you based? I know some charities are sending greyhounds abroad to find loving homes - perhaps you could adopt through one of those?
Greyhounds are usually nervous, timid, or shy, or all three, but they are so loving these dogs and some people wrongly think because they are greyhounds they need more than average excercise but this is in fact not true they really don't need that much exercise they love nothing more than cuddling with thier human on the sofa they love being close to thier human please don't overlook these lovely natured dogs as they are so often heartlessly abandoned wen they can't win races anymore it's just very unfair, I promise u they make lovely companions and snuggle buddies if u just show them the love and care they deserve ♥️🐾🐾🇬🇧🥰
They definitely reward you 100-fold with love and affection :-)
What a lovely video. My boy was a longer stayer and I couldn't imagine life without him now.
Thank you for giving him a chance 💙
I wish I could 'save' every old dog and long stay pooch in every kennel in the world.
Even making a difference to one of them is worth it in my book 😍
What a lovely video. Gorgeous dogs, I'm so glad we rehomed our two. Thank you😊
Our pleasure!
👍🐾❤️
Thanks for this advice, Jill! I'll bear it in mind when we start looking to adopt a grey later this summer. I have previously had rescue cats and I always asked to see the ones who had been there the longest. These lovelies turned out to be wonderful pets, so it seems the same issue of being overlooked affects cats too!
I can imagine :-( I do tend to ask for the longest stayers and pick from those if I can. The only one I have right now who didn't come with some issue or other is Meg - and I got her to support my neurotic little Daisy
I wonder if the greyhound's fur colour influences their chances.
One of my flatmate's new greyhounds also has taken nearly a year to come out of his shell and reveal himself, so a short encounter doesn't necessarily mean anything.
I certainly see the 'pretty' colours being more popular. If a dog is a more 'appealing' colour and isnt snapped up quickly, I would question what else is going on with that dog
Great video as always 😊
Thank you 🤗
