Same im still a big fan of the books, and defo separate the books from the author. Have you read the old kingdom series by Garth Nix first book is Called sabriel also a really good middle grade fantasy that seams to transcend older reading ages . I dont see many people talk about now as it a bit of an older series it also focuses another on death and loss and some of the main characters are necromancers.

Good on you, Mike. Tired of people letting public image affect the worlds that these authors create. Just keep it within what’s contained in the books. No retrospective analysis of what houses really mean etc. No, it was never about forcing values on kids etc, don’t think too much into it. It makes sense within the story, just enjoy it! Haha

My son was 11 years old when this came out in the States. He was not a reader before this but became an avid reader after reading the first book upon my insistence. Every year when the next book came out he was still Harry's age (until Book 4). He then went on to the Young Jedi series, Goosebumps, Animorphs, and never stopped. He is now in his mid-30s and reading is still one of his favorite activities, particularly in the science fiction/fantasy genres. It only takes the right books to make a child a reader.

It's: "Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love".

The overarching theme of death and coming to terms with it as a natural part of life was really important to me growing up and losing loved ones. I know millions relate to this but it really struck me and the books have helped me overcome more than I could ever say. I've reread this series dozens of times over the last two decades and it's never diminished in my eyes. The worldbuilding isn't great and there are certainly plot holes galore, but that's not the point. There's more to focus on in this series and the messages stick the landing (in my opinion).

    Brilliant review as always!
When my daughter was reading this series as it came out I also read them!
We were at many of those crazy midnight releases and it seems like we may never see a phenomenon like it again - where hundreds of people of all ages line up on cold evenings at a book store waiting for a new book in a series!
I’ve read the series through twice and they remain some of my favorite books of all time.
Besides being an incredible world filled with great ideas, imagination and wonder - JK Rowling is simply a brilliant storyteller that can tell her story to anyone at any age.
My daughters still love them -they are 20 and 28 - my niece loves them who is 13 - my nephew loves them who is 32 - and I love them and I am in my 50’s!
It is INCREDIBLY rare that an author can do this.
In fact,I’ve read many fantasy series since then...but there is not ONE that I could say this about.
Is there anything that you could recommend that would be even close to this?

I grew up with Harry Potter and, nostalgia aside, I think it’s a great series. The characters are fleshed out, the world building is engrossing (if at times inconsistent), and the story is compelling. Moreover, Rowling is a true storyteller and knows how to hook the reader. I last reread the series a couple of years ago as an adult, and I was glad to see I was still hooked and looking forward for the next chapter, even though I already knew how it ended. Not every author has that ability. There’s a reason why it became such a hit and people were dying to know what happened in the next installment, especially after book 6. It takes skill to write an engrossing book, let alone 7!

I was always an avid reader as a kid, but Harry Potter was my real introduction into the world of fantasy. If it weren't for those books, I'd never have gotten into Tolkien, Lewis, Salvatore, and all the fantasy greats. And despite all the hate the series has been getting because of Joan's current opinions, I will always be grateful to her and her writing for keeping me into books.

I really don''t disagree with anything you said in the entire video. I ignored this series until the first movie was about to come out. Less because I thought it was aimed at kids and more because I had no idea what it was really about. After seeing previews I grabbed the first four books and read them all within a few days. From then on I was hooked for life (I was in my early thirties at the time) and became an avid fan of both the movies and the books. The series will always hold a special place in my heart.

Harry Potter is one of my top favorite series ever, and at some point I want to reread it. I first read the books in my early 30s, and I was absolutely captivated. I read the whole series in a couple of months. Haggrid is perhaps my favorite character. It captivated my kids as well, and they’ve read it several times. I’m a big advocate for my kids to love reading, and I always tell them “Read what you enjoy.” I like the entire culture that has sprang up around it too, including the Fantastic Beasts movies. I think “Magic School” is becoming a subgenre all it’s own lol. Harry Potter did it, then Rothfuss did a version of it, and now Naomi Novik has one out lol.

I saw everyone reading and freaking out and it bugged me🤣 and I said I wouldn't read it. Then I saw the first movie trailer and was so intrigued that I gave in. I was a junior in high school and I flew through the 4 books that were out and enthusiastically joined the nerdiest fans.😅 The 7th book came out at midnight before my husband's brother's wedding. I went straight from their rehearsal dinner to the bookstore by myself in an unfamiliar town and waited in line to get that book! Then I read it well into the morning in the bathroom of our little hotel room.😅 Now my kids have read it multiple times!

I can confirm that for a child, time spent reading with a parent is not just fun, but also great bonding experience for the future. It was actually my mom who introduced me to Harry Potter. She is a primary school librarian, so we had quite an easy access to the books as those were coming out. And years later I realized why I have such a strong attachement to Harry Potter series. It was because I strongly associate these memories with happier moments in my childhood. I have read the books with my mom, watched movies with both of my parents (multiple times). While we read together also some other books, significant part of my childhood (when I was over 7 years old) and teenage years were Harry Potter dominated.

I am apart of that group that started reading because my parents read me the books while we were on car trips. It was this series and The Hobbit that got me into fantasy and reading when I was younger. As a young child, being only 7-9 at the time, I can distinctly remember heading to the movie theatre between 2001 and 2003 to watch both Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and just being memorized. I can pretty confidently say that without these books and movies, I wouldn't be as avid a reader as I am today.

Just wanna say thanks for the spoiler free video. You might think everyone knows what happens in the series but personally I have no idea of what the story is about other then what happened in the first movie.
I read a lot of books back when I was in high school so you can’t say I refuse to read any books. I always thought Harry Potter was just a movie series.
Our librarian never suggested any Harry Potter books for some reason but I did get to read many series before they became movies like Alex Rider, Percy Jackson, Maze Runner, Hunger games, divergent, etc etc... too many to list off.
With my new job I am able to listen to audio books while working so I picked up “reading” again after 8 years or so of not reading. Having a blast rereading Alex Rider and looking forward to the new books released since i stopped reading.
I plan to read Harry Potter next and with how everyone talks about the series, Im really excited to dive into it completely blind (not many people can say that nowadays haha)
    Cheers and thanks again!

They are quite layered; including characters, world building, themes & motifs. I think adults notice things than kids do. You also pick up things in subsequent readings. The interesting thing about these is the kids age as the series goes, rather than just one adventure after another; and it ends. It doesn't go on & on like say, Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys

That's ok, same happened with me regarding LOTR. I watched the films, but never read the books, so I gave it a go, but dropped it at the middle of the two towers, coz I was bored out of my mind. And the characters and their relationship is one of the core and best parts of the HP series , so yeah, If the books did not made u care for any one of them, then I guess it's just not for u. And the fantasy/magic aspect of the HP series is much more grounded, realistic and modern. I mean if magic actually existed with everyone in this world, that's how it would have been. The way Rowling integrated fantasy/magic aspect in these books, made it almost feel real. Like u can actually feel that the events happening in the HP books could very much happen in the real world, cuz the series itself is set in the real world. So yeah, but hey, I believe this aspect of HP is not for everyone and that's fine. Cheers mate 🤞

@RabiyaRavenclaw i don't really agree with it being modern or realistic because Magic isn't really properly explained in the first place, and the way magic is set up, wouldn't the wizards not be a money based society? Like they can replicate stuff with Magic...I feel like it just feels modern because of the setting but, the decisions made don't really reflect how this would actually work. Like there being an entire group of evil kids isn't really realistic right? People are nuanced, but you don't really get that. And I get that they were originally kids books, but by the end I feel like they don't actually mature, they just get more violent.

So glad to see this review on this channel, especially because it seems the majority of booktubers are too cool for Harry Potter these days. I don't support the author's views and of course the series has flaws and plotholes but the books hold up extremely well, especially the characters (besides a few other series, I can't think of many books with hundreds of characters whose names and personalities are so vivid in my mind) and worldbuilding - who would pass up a chance to go to Hogwarts?? I also think Rowling's humour in the series is quite underrated, so many lines caused me to laugh out loud during my reread last year.
SPOILER 16 years and hundreds of books later since I first read OotP, and I still haven't cried more for a character than I have for Sirius Black.

I think part of the discrediting for the series comes not only from the notion that it’s “for children”, but that it is immensely popular. There’s an inherent snobbery towards the series among die-hard fantasy readers because they associate popularity with bad taste. I’ve noticed that a lot of the snobbery for HP comes from LOTR’s fans. I remember there was even a hint of jealousy at the time at the peak of Harry’s popularity.
I like both the LOTR and HP books and films. I have read many fantasy series for children and adults, and if they’re good, I enjoy them, regardless of their target audience and style. I’ve read many fantasy stand alones and series, and enjoyed most of them, but few have hooked me or charmed me like Harry Potter did. It is truly a special series.

For Both HP and LOTR, I read the books much later after watching the films, and honestly speaking the LOTR series did not manage to hook me the way HP did. There is something about the way Rowling manages to hook the readers, that Tolkien doesn't possess. I finished reading the HP series in one seating, while for LOTR, I dropped it in the middle of the two towers. I was just bored out if my mind. @@RabiyaRavenclaw I feel the same way. Tolkien's brilliance comes from his world-building, but he wasn't as good as a story-teller in my opinion. I think one of the things that makes Harry Potter so readable is that they are, at their core, as much mystery books as they are fantasies. Rowling is really skilled at setting atmosphere, creating a compelling conflict and likeable or deep characters that make you want to follow it through the end.
