Roger Corman was going to produce a low budget version of the movie starring Richard Roundtree and it was going to take place in the old West, but it was cancelled in 1992. Before Wesley Snipes played the titular vampire hunter, Michael Jai White, LL Cool J, Lawrence Fishburne and Denzel Washington were considered for the role. Patrick McGoohan and Jon Voight were considered for the role of Whistler until Kris Kristofferson was picked. Terence Stamp was considered for the role of Deacon Frost until Stephen Dorff was picked as the producers wanted someone who was younger and more intimidating.

This movie saved Marvel Studios from bankruptcy. I helped by buying 2 tickets to it opening weekend. The girl I took with me yelled at me after "Why did you think I would like that?" I dodged a bullet by never dating her again. I helped Marvel Studios and Marvel Studios helped me. Win/win.
My best friend saw it in the cinema and made me go. I went to the bathroom before it started and almost missed the start. He said that if I missed that start he was going to stop me watching the movie and pay to see the next screening. I was glad I got back in time. I went four times, he went seven times. If this got rereleased in cinemas I would so go back to see it.
My girlfriend took me to see it. We been married for decades afterwards. Really, it should be used as a litmus test of what makes a good person to date.

So many reactors miss this, so don''t feel bad, but the 'bad guys' don't know Bladee has the use of EDTA, the "energetic reaction chemical". So when they find the blue vials on Blade, they assume it is the serum, not the EDTA. Blade does not correct them and it pays off at the very end when he can use it against the Blood God. Funnily enough they initially wanted the Blood God to be just CGI blood, but they failed to make it look good. So they made Frost the 'body' of the Blood God as a revised big bad.
The DVD special features had the test footage for the CGI blood god and... yeah, they 100% made the right call in turning it into a fight with Frost, it was... not good. :D

The body-splitting-and-reattaching gives a bit of a taste of what it could have been, and the final fight is a little silly with Frost whizzing around at superspeed at random moments, but it is still way, way, way better than what it almost was. And credit to the people who saw that the CGI of the time for the budget was too limited and decided to do it live-action. Wish more movies had that kind of people.

It's really hard to overstate the impact and influence this movie has had over the years. It was the first comic book movie that proved that it didn't need to be campy or comedy to work. It absolutely oozed with the late 90's cool that went on to make The Matrix so iconic. It set in motion a series of events that led, pretty directly, to the start of the MCU. All while having enough awesome one liners to make Arnold Schwarzenegger jealous.
I remember my first time watching this. I love how the beginning of the movie lets you know immediately that Blade is the baddest guy in the room. Would love to see your reaction to Blade 2. It’s my favorite of the trilogy.
The Day Walker! Seeing this opening weekend back in the 90s was awesome. You had comic book movies like Batman/Batman Returns and The Crow that were dark, violent, and gritty but always felt like they were holding back. This was the one that finally didn't hold back and fully embraced it. At the time, this was the coolest movie I had ever seen. Then the sequel came out and took that status.

So all the pseudo-sciency stuff was invented to distance vampires a bit more from the traditional image, make them cooler and edgier. I don't personally feel all of it is necessary, I like the more classical mystical/mysterious vampires, but the films, as a whole, work. Very excited to see how the new Blade melds into the MCU.
That's exactly what it was. He knows that Quinn works for Deacon Frost. And the fact that Blade keeps mutilating Quinn over the course of the movie makes it pretty clear that he is largely doing it for fun.

Some of it basically torturing him for information, some of it that Quinn's just lucky enough keep encountering Blade and survive, unlucky enough that he doesn't survive unscathed. Several times it seems like Blade would have finished Quinn if he could, but other factors made it so Quinn got away.
Deacon Frost is one of the great movie villains IMO, he's definitely evil, but he has a plan that makes logical sense (to him), and he has the charisma for you to believe that he's a leader that others would follow. He feels genuinely menacing, and also feels like he's the protagonist of his own story, rather than here just for the hero's story.

Got the chance to see this at the cinema last year, I was grinning the whole time. Blade is definitely the coolest comic character and Wesley Snipes was so perfect which has always been the discouraging thing when talking about reboots. There is only one Blade, there's only ever gonna be one Blade.
This was the first successful Marvel comics character movie & the 2nd Marvel movie to be Rated R the 1st R rated being the 1989 The Punisher staring Dolph Lundgren.
So there's no cut and dry explanation why Quinn survived the silver spikes, when later we're told Vampires are severely allergic to garlic and silver. My headcanon is Quinn is a more mature Vampire than the rest in the club, who were relatively young and weak. Other theories are that the silver is only fatal if it hits a vital organ, which doesn't really make sense for me. Cuz the silver should still cause severe issues for Quinn's shoulders, yet we see no ill effects in the hospital, just the crispy skin from immolation.
Never noticed the similarities to the Matrix fight scenes until now: super cool stylized fights set to techno. This was 98. Matrix was 99. Such a cool time.
The blood rave scene is so iconic.🧛🩸🩸🩸 Wesley Snipes being a real martial artist helps sell the role so much and adds to the authenticity of the character.
FACT CHECK: Marvel Studios did not exist, back in the 90s, it was called Marvel Entertainment Group. In 2008, they changed the name, then released Iron Man. Blade is the first major theatrical release from Marvel, yes, but the MCU as we know it now would not exist until a decade later. Everyone telling you this is an MCU film, is wrong. His cameo in a more recent film, however... now he's officially MCU. 😊
It IS fair to credit the film as the first step toward the MCU becoming a thing though, paving the way by showing superhero films done right can be well received and successful.

@Addie this MADE Marvel, in the 1970's their made for TV shows and their bad comics in the 70's(sales), they had sold all their properties to stay afloat. This SAVED Marvel Comics, and made it possible for all the films to follow, and was a rated R comic film 20 years wayyy before Deadpool

Got the chance to see this at the cinema last year, I was grinning the whole time. Blade is definitely the coolest comic character and Wesley Snipes was so perfect which has always been the discouraging thing when talking about reboots. There is only one Blade, there's only ever gonna be one Blade.

So there's no cut and dry explanation why Quinn survived the silver spikes, when later we're told Vampires are severely allergic to garlic and silver. My headcanon is Quinn is a more mature Vampire than the rest in the club, who were relatively young and weak. Other theories are that the silver is only fatal if it hits a vital organ, which doesn't really make sense for me. Cuz the silver should still cause severe issues for Quinn's shoulders, yet we see no ill effects in the hospital, just the crispy skin from immolation.
This is still one of my favorite Marvel movies. Blade is a great character
Never noticed the similarities to the Matrix fight scenes until now: super cool stylized fights set to techno. This was 98. Matrix was 99. Such a cool time.

Marvel Studios did not exist, back in the 90s, it was called Marvel Entertainment Group. In 2008, they changed the name, then released Iron Man.
Blade is the first major theatrical release from Marvel, yes, but the MCU as we know it now would not exist until a decade later.
Everyone telling you this is an MCU film, is wrong.
His cameo in a more recent film, however... now he's officially MCU. 😊
It IS fair to credit the film as the first step toward the MCU becoming a thing though, paving the way by showing superhero films done right can be well received and successful.
