This performance was not lip-synched. This is completely live.
The Cars are classics! This definitely is not the recorded version, it’s live.
The Cars' first hit, Just What I Needed, really made it feel like the 80's were here when it came out in 1978. It is one of my favorite songs of all time. Either the original from the album or the live Midnight Special version. They're both great.
Just What I Needed
Good Times Roll
Moving In Stereo
@@ngsplt45 I love Good Times Roll
The Cars are what they claim to be. A ride.
This may not be one of the chart hits, but it was all over the radio in the 80s. It's a beloved song, and great fun to sing along to.
It's oh-KAY-sek. That was Benjamin Orr singing, and Rick was playing the white guitar in this clip.
I really liked The Cars! And this song very much. It was played a lot. Surprised it wasn’t considered a “hit”. Very good! 👍🇺🇸
My favorite Cars songs are Moving in Stereo, You're All I've Got Tonight and the crazy Shoo Be Doo/Candy-O. They also had big hits with Just What I Needed, Bye Bye Love, Shake it Up My Best Friend's Girl. Great MTV videos were Magic and You Might Think.
4:11 I don't believe that any of "The Midnight Special," groups lip synced.
Midnight Special were live performances!
Always live that I've seen. It is freaky how great Ben Orr was as a live performer-- his tone control and pitch were always bang on live. What brilliant talent taken way too soon.
The Cars' debut album was loaded with hits, or at least singles!
Live song for sure.....they were one of a few bands talented enough to play live on television.
This is a rabbit hole you'll love. They have their own unique sound and are really feel good.
Let The Good Times Roll
Hello Again
Drive
Listen to "Shake It Up".
9:51 Ocasek is pronounced O-kay-sick.
The Cars were amazing. I got to see them twice in concert in the 80s. "Let's Go" was one of their big hits. Wiki doesn't always have the facts straight. Ocasek is pronounced " O KAY sek" My favorite is "Shake It Up."
@@subwaygoddess1 Nice you got to see them! 👍🇺🇸
Benjamin Orr was always changing his hair style and color. He was kinda a cool dude.
The Cars are on my top 5 all time favorite Bands. Up there with The Beatles, Duran Duran, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and U2. The Cars had two "Lead Singers". Rick Ocasek (Pronounced "OK"-"sek") was the leader and primary Lyricist, writing most of the songs. He had a deeper more punk-rock kind of voice. He has the tall spiky black hair, plays the rhythm guitar. Benjamin Orr (The guy singing this song) was the other lead singer. (They actually split the songs almost 50/50 on who sang primary and who sang backing vocals) Ben was "the cute guy" that most of the girls loved, and had the more mainstream pop sounding voice. He played the bass guitar. Together they could weave just about any kind of vibe you wanted to hear from an new wave rock band of the late 70's / early 80's.
The Cars were ahead of their time. In a way, many of the 80's band copied their style. The Cars sounded "80's" in 1978/79. They were one of the bands that could be called "the tip of the spear" in the New-Wave Rock movement.
The Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018
Ben passed away in the year 2000 from pancreatic cancer. Ric passed in 2019 of heart disease. So many great songs. So much talent. Such a huge influence on "the sound" of the early 80's.
Deep dive. Long Live the Cars...
This was def live performed - no studio and lip synched.
Loved The Cars
Some videos you find of Midnight Special or sometimes Soul Train are live performances but later someone replaced the sound with the studio version. Usually it's easy to tell, especially if it's a song you've heard hundreds of times.
Love The Cars! RIP Ben and Ric💔💔
My favorite song of all time, still sounds as good as it did when it was new and i was 17. The Cars are my third favorite band after The Beatles and Pink Floyd.
❤❤❤
This is totally live and in faster time than the studio version. Can't say I like it. I love the studio version. It's one of my all time favourite hits. Yes, it was a hit!
I think the sound on this was not so clear....
the CARS albums THE CARS and CANDY -O were all hits SHAKE IT UP was still good
❤ Benjamin was the driver ! IMHO
Midnight Special is live.
I bought The Cars first album through Columbia House... Does that company still exist? The Cars are special to me. Their sound was so fresh after a decade of disco.
My introductory purchase from Columbia included Steppenwolf, Jimi Hendrix, & Sly & the Family Stone, a very long time ago. ✌️❤️🎶
12 or more records tapes etc for a penny. I’m pretty sure they are out of business. I think most people just took the initial haul for a penny and never bought the records they wanted you to pay full price and shipping for within a time period. 😮
@@JonathanGreen18 Yeah they were always sending you more records and then billing you for them after that first order but if you didn't ask for them they couldn't make you pay it so a lot of people just kept them and didn't pay.
Midnight Special was on Friday night and had the biggest names of that time.
Let's Go song is a great introduction to them. Doesn't have to be a hit even if it should have. Was used a lot in dances and so on back in the 80s.
This song was from the 2nd album, Candy-O.
I always loved listening to them for some reason at driving night while in summertime with the windows down. They had some fun videos
Song got to #14 on billboard top forty 1979! My favorite Cars song!
Most if not all Mid Night Special performances were live.
*Ric o-KAY-sek. You should start with their first hit, "Just What I Needed"*
I see that some people have already got on your case about the Midnight Special not being lip sync and the pronunciation of Ric O-case- ik, so I won't bother you about that.😁 I think the critics were wrong that this was their best song from their second album. IMO, "Dangerous Type" & "Candy-O" were better. Lots to react to with this group including the MTV award winner track "You Might Think" . Also take a listen to "Moving In Stereo". Thanks.
My favorite Cars song. So peppy!
Not really new, new here, but What would you name your band if you were this talented, had as many hits as they did and sold as many albums as they did?
Run-Gren. Like Run and Gren. Brilliant artist. Synthesizers were not very old at this time.
David Bowie and Sweet?
Dude, I need to shut the f up. I think that is right on. Jump forward into the future and add Psychedelic Furs and a tiny bit of Metallica in there for me, and you can start to taste living in The Cars.
I will have to check to see if you have reviewed E.L.O.....
Thank you, man. I have been listening to True Crime and politics for months and months. I'm glad you were here to snap me out of it.
“ New Wave”
Midnight Special was bands playng their music live!
Best friends girlfriend 🎉🎉
Their first two albums were very good
IIRC, Ric’s wife (super model Paulina Poriskova) was in one of their videos but can’t remember which song.
ETA: he’s singing “I like the night life, baby! Let’s go!”
That’s live and what’s amazing the studio version isn’t much different but there are subtle nuances that differ. Great choice another banger from them later in their CAReer is Cruiser
Midnight special was always live, young Jedi
9:58 Orr sang most of the songs in the beginning, but Ocasek sang quite a few songs on their later albums.
Too bad ❤❤❤ Ben had the vocal ability❤❤
Great band!
Bye Bye Love next please!
It's the studio audio...hears clapping
❤❤❤Ben❤❤❤
"The Corvettes".
All Midnight Special was all live!!!!
All the Saturday night specials are live.
Hearing this song and the entire album around 30 times on my Senior trip to the Bahamas in 1979, I can guarantee this version is not from the original album. And by the way, Benjamin Orr had the better more melodic voice.
Todd Rundgren is your next rabbit hole. He made his own music, and produced for many other artists. "Bang the Drum All Day" and "Hello, It's Me".
Yes please! Todd Rundgren rabbit hole is needed ❤
O k sick
This is Ben Orr singing.
I suggest you do "Awaken" by YES. It takes you on an uplifting spiritual journey. Here's a great live version: ruclips.net/video/nDXccU0xgNo/видео.html or the studio version. But it's amazing how close the live version is to the studio version.
Ric (oh-case-ick)
That's live
This is live…some were
EVERY MIDNIGHT SPECIAL BAND PERFORMACE IS LIVE , YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT.
That’s a bit harsh 😂
Another negative comment!! Why bother watching if you think he doesn't know what he is talking about??
@@meni8015 Well he doesn't but that's okay. You learn as you go.
I was 17 in 1979 when they s came out and my boyfriend always sang it to me😂. I didn't like the sound of this live version. Studio version 💯 better!
Straight up... you need to watch the actual album video to really appreciate this band. That live video sughs and does not represent.
The Beatles had too many songs that weren't hits that were great songs too. The more popular songs aren't always the best ones.
The clapping really f*"ed the song up!
Here's a Trivia question. What was the first vid played on MTV?
The Buggles, Video Killed the Radio Star.
Not Lip Sinked
Their best songs weren't always hits.
Yeah. The cars is not a good name. Good band -- great band -- we're so used to saying the name that we forget about it. But its not a good band name.
