You know sh!t is about to go down when Peter Sarsgaard looks at you the way he looks at Steve when he figures out that the "hacker conference" was a big steaming pile.
Why does anyone want to hear the opinion of the guy who did it? He clearly didn't care about what he was doing and how is was going to affect the reputation of the magazine and the people who worked there. He would have written those phony stories for the rest of his life if he had never have gotten caught.
People call Hayden Christensen a bad actor because of his performance in Star Wars. But if ever there's proof that he was just the victim of bad directing, it's this.
For a subject that seems like it would be extremely boring, this movie is really good. I just wonder if Stephen Glass is really that pathetic. Crying and trying to make people feel sorry for him when he gets busted. That and a Miata? Why would any male want a Miata? That’s a chick car if there ever was one.
Watch the 60 min interview after the movie on the DVD. Glass is a total POS and worse, still lying! Just watch his answers, reactions and body language in the interview...he is a pathological liar.
Embellishment was part of Glasses mo. Glass kissed so much ass all the time. Glass became so narcissistic that he blurred reality with fantasy. I watched how the California Bar kept Glass from being a lawyer. Best block ever!
miata's were the cheapest new affordable convertibles anyone could buy. very few could buy porsche 911s and mercedes and of the like. i suppose mustangs were affordable but those are monsters and not tight on the curves
IIRC in the film it states that sometimes the "facts" were the notes of the reporter themselves. So their "fact checking" system at the time must'v mainly consisted of correcting typos and checking the reporter's notes.
You have to remember though it was a different time for the internet. Google's name had only *just* been decided and was running out of a garage in September of that year. My source for that is Google's own history page. The different time for the internet likely explains why he set up the jukt site on AOL. This is pure supposition on my part but it's possible that he got one of those "free trial" CDs, assumed that would make the site untraceable back to him, and went from there.
Maybe but to anyone who understands the internet, no company would place themselves under a Members account. That's a huge red flag that simply may have gone unnoticed.
Journalism is mixed in with opinions so often its not hard to see how a staunchly political magazine could stand by a reporter just because his views agreed with the views of many of the editors at the magazine.
Yepper...exactly...he also did a made up story about a young republicans conference that was a drunken debauchery...pretty much entirely made up....of course the new republic would run with it, it met their leftist biases.
Genre and plotwise this isnt the type of movie I would choose to go see back in the day, but when I did get a chance to watch it it held my attention to the very end, the intrigue and building tension, so well acted and executed. Great movie. Thanks for the breakdown and behind the scenes info.
An example that there is nothing wrong with fantasy, make-believe, etc. Creativity is a wonderful gift. An important gift. However, there is such thing as abusing this gift, and/or using it improperly: when one knowingly conveys it as actuality to one's listeners, and/or readers. That's manipulating people for one's own purpose/s. And this is never victimless.
Of course now and days we know better about the internet and basic knowledge about IP addresses are well known. Anyway, needless to say their fact checking system was completely lazy to let those completely fabricated pieces go to print.... Made for a decent movie though.
Well. To be fair the fact checking system of The New Republic was one of the bests of its time. Unfortulately there was also a flaw that Glass was able to abuse. The flaw was that when in doubt they trusted the writer's notes on the subject and Glass was able to fabricate his notes in such a way that the fact checker never caught him. This was also a time before the internet was well known so their job was also much more difficult than it is now. Which is a little comical to think that nowadays fact checkers doesn't seem to even exist so a scheme like this would be even easier to do now than it was in 1998.
Wouldn't the fact checking department need more than just a journalist's hand-written notes as evidence? Glass was fabricating legal agencies and legislation. Surely picking up the phone like Pennenberg did would have proven it was all lies. Also, how would it be easier today? We can look up companies, federal/state/government depratments and people on line and get confirmation of their existence and then contact them to verify the content of the article.
John: Yea even on certain things like the Ian kid they'd only have Stevens notes to go on but you'd still have to contact the kid & or his parents before you'd put the article out to make sure he's not falsely represented & if you can't get in touch with him or the parents you can't put the article out until you talk to them right?? I also agree it would be extremely hard to fake a story today with the information we have @our fingertips!! If I was Steven I woulda flipped it instantly like "you finally caught on, I was seeing how long this would go on till you caught the flaw in our system & this was all leading to the real article i am writing on this situation" lol but it's easy to think of when your not under that pressure!
@@idontdovarioustasks You know this is not right Chuck, I feel really attacked. You're my editor you're supposed to support me and you're taking their word against mine. You're supposed to support me!
Of course, the Ian Restil story make no sense. Why would a computer hacker demand lifetime subscriptions to Playboy and Penthouse? He could view all the filth he wants on the Internet.

I've been following Stephen around for months waiting to play the knock out game on his ass! I know it sounds silly, I don't even know if I'm gonna go through with it yet.
That one guy who uttered "unbelievable" to Stephen's Hack Heaven story just foreshadowed the whole conflict of the movie
I've watched this movie so many times. Love it!
I can watch for a while and then it gets so cringey I have to bail.
👍

Seriously! Peter’s looks makes this movie amazing
Listen to his interviews, he can not say that he is at fault and turns himself into a victim.
TheAce707 As do so many others. Culprits recasting themselves as victims has become so common it’s practically a cliche.
Glass puts a spin on everything he says

As soon as he (Glass) was caught up with, they fired him, and they should.

Weirdo ❤😊
I'm surprised he didn't work for Faux Noise. They have problems with the truth too.
Yeah just like the past 2 years they spent pushing that Trump Russia Collusion fiction.
Oh wait a minute, that was all the stations apart from Fox.
TMZ could use his "talents" also
A Miata is not a sports car
Show me the money!
Thats the point
Casting Steve Zahn in anything outside a zany comedy isn't going to work and it doesn't here. Completely unbelievable.
I’m gonna assume you’re fucking stupid and have no media literacy
