    Good run out on an EV Richy. Looking down the comments I think most are from people thinking up excuses not to change. We just can't let those people drag us down the same road as the dead dinosaurs they are burning. Mutate and survive man!
    You hinted at the fact it is a different way of thinking about fueling to match the different method. For a start you would pretty much always start your journey with a "full tank". Not many people ride for as much as 2hrs non-stop, in which case by the time you had paid for your coffee the bike would be well on its way to a full tank.

    I test rode a prototype electric bike a few years ago and the impressive thing about it, was the fantastic throttle connection made possible by the regen. braking. If you wanted to 25% more speed you just added 25% more throttle and if you wanted to trim off 25% of speed, you just eased off the throttle 25%. And no fuel injection snatch either. Very precise is how I would describe it.

    Morning , For what its worth . I drive a hybrid London bus , We were given lessons to help the ride for the customer and maximize acceleration and deceleration. Deceleration is more important due to the aid of increased power reduction/ engine braking . its possible to bring the bus to a halt without touching the brake . I do believe these bikes will be common place in ten years . the progress in battery refinement is a steep upward curve cheers TJ

    Richy thanks for this. I purchased a 2017 Zero DSR this spring after a lifelong relationship with motocross, desert and road racing. Your video here is the FIRST one I've seen that outlines what I consider to be the most real world experience I've personally had with my own Zero. I always chuckle when I hear trolls bitch about things they have never tried simply because they hate change. At least change from what 'they' know.

    Pro Tip: Nobody charges to 100% when on the road. Do that overnight at home. When stopping at a charge station only get enough in the battery to get you where you are going with a comfortable reserve.

    • @CSNCSNCSN

      Or around 80-90% which is around when the charge rate starts to taper off significantly. Unlike pouring liquid into a hollow jug, those electrons don't much like filling the last bit of space available.

      @@CSNCSNCSN True words. I only charge to 80% at home unless leaving on a long trip the next day. Charging to 100% all the time isn't good for the battery and simply isn't needed. I just wanted to keep my post short enough for people to read.

    You mention that you can't hear it when filtering through stop and go traffic.
    When I am in my car with stop and go traffic and I hear a motorcycle, then they are already next to me. If I was planning a lane change, then hearing the motorcycle would already be too late.
    So I don't think the lack of sound will affect filtering that much since people won't hear you on time anyway.

    • @CSNCSNCSN

      True facts. I've commuted on a Zero FX and a WR450F thumper (amongst others) and if you're counting on your "loud pipes" being heard over the THX-certified surround sound blaring in a tomb of modern NVH engineering, you're in WHEN not IF territory.

    Oh nooooooo. Rich (or rather, should I say Alec). I promised myself I would not comment on one of your vids for a few days - but it is my weekend here starting tonight, and I saw this 'un and buggerme.I had to say summats pal. I have kissed the Blarney stone twice - so mebbiz - just that I'm a gobby git. However - Note to Alec of "English Electric Motor Company" who will be watching this channel. Alec - have a Google (better still a RUclips) of a similar named company / product - The "English Electric Lightning". It was the best / most exciting Fighter Aircraft the world has ever seen. Incredible machine. Blows EVERYONE'S socks off just to see and hear it. Exciting. Raw. Blood curdling. Having seen THIS particular "English Electric" Product as a lifelong biker to my soul - I cannot tell you how underwhelmed I am at the "Experience".Imagine if Richy was out with a crew of 8, which he does do on occasion. It would be 4 hours stoppage, twice a day for a re-charge, so 8 hours per day not riding - ie - the ENTIRE day !!. Maybe only an hour per top - up if there were 4 re-charging devices at every station, and everyone was "Half full", The concept of a "Ride with the lads" would not be possible. I love the idyllic notion - ie - a green environment - but it is just not practical currently Alec - not yet. The petrol heads currently alive will always resist - and I will do my best to ensure that my 7 month old Grandson is similarly opined. After the meteor hits the planet, we'll be back to amoeba again anyway. Yoshimura carbs is the future. Trust me - I'm a Scientist. Last point Alec - no self cancelling indicators ???. Is't that an electrical equipment shortfall ?. Don't worry - it is available on modern petrol engined machines 👍. Sorry Richy. Needed saying (To Alec)

      @Tom Jenkins I think both range and charge time have definitely improved, just not to an acceptable level to most riders at present. If solid state batteries are just around the corner (Tesla battery day is imminent!), then that really will be the CD overtakes vinyl game changer, because we'll most likely be looking at 300+ mile ranges, with an hour charging time, in something as light as an equivalent ICE bike; and that'll work for most people.

    • @phillipsandusky3795
      @phillipsandusky3795 4 года назад +3

      @bill the biker certainly wont get to viability with that attitude. Check out the new 21.5kwh Energica bikes with DC fast charging. Batteries are getting bigger, lighter, denser, and faster charging. Even if each metric improves 1% per year they compound and the scale tips. Once enough "wealthy people" do it, it becomes cheaper and support grows from the top down. Just like how Tesla is doing it. Ride safe see ya on the road!

  • @annekecornee

    1 Thing to think of in charging habits. Don't charge untill 100% everytime. Especially not on public chargers. Charge as much as you need to get home / to your destination. Charge it there, while you do something else (eating, sleeping, working). That decreases your waiting time and makes charging even cheaper.

    To be a little clearer- it *may* get 160 miles but only in city driving and if driven intentionally in favorable terrain, perhaps going 25-35 mph which is common city speeds. Personally I think the range claim is inflated as practically every manufacturer is guilty of doing. According to Zero it can possibly get 100 miles highway assuming you went 55 mph the whole way in perfect conditions (which no one drives that slow in the U.S. unless they want to get in an accident). This is of course without mentioning the ideal rider weight or load- which they may have done the testing with a 90-pound adult for all we know.

    I also like relaxing in car now when it's charging( free in w.yorks).👍

  • @kevinmobile
    @kevinmobile 4 года назад +2

    You mentioned that the electricity costs were negligible but bear in mind that they can easily be 30-40p/KWh whereas at home you would be paying around 15p/KWh. Also if I was the Chancellor seeing all future petrol/diesel tax revenue disappear, I'd want to tax these charging points to pay for a few bills. The same tax recovery need would apply to all alternative technologies such as hydrogen of course.
    Interestingly the law* that requires electric or hybrid cars to have an external sound generator so they can be more easily heard by pedestrians and cyclists came into effect on 1 July 2019 but only applies to 4-wheeled vehicles. Perhaps it might be useful on bikes, if only for filtering, to generate a custom sound through speakers. 2 stroke, V twin, boxer or in-line six choice anyone?
    * An EU-mandated system called Acoustic Vehicle Alert System, or AVAS works at speeds of up to 13 mph, and the volume must be at least 56 dB (similar to the volume of an electric toothbrush) and must not be louder than 75 dB, equivalent to the noise of a conventional car. The sound must also be continuous, and help road users understand the driving behaviour of the vehicle by sound alone - for example, by varying in volume and pitch when a vehicle is accelerating.

    • @PH8592
      @PH8592 4 года назад +1

      30-40p/kWh for a rapid charger, which is mainly for cars with huge batteries. You'd use 7kw destination chargers for the bike, which are mostly free, but never over 25p/kWh - if ever you need to charge publicly. With home charging, you'd go to a smart tariff, charging overnight, I charge between 0-8p/kWh (rarely I actually get paid to take on electricity - hasn't been for a while).
      I have 2 EVs and for 6000 miles (over the past 2 months), charging at home, it's cost me about £125. Vs £900 it would have cost me in petrol for my old 1.2 Clio.

      own a Zero FXS as well. bought used with 1300 miles for $8200 USD after taxes and dealer fees. my 2nd bike that's used mostly for commuting. definitely not something you want to take long distance since its charge rate is a paltry 0.65kw (such a slow charge rate that you'd be better off taking a bicycle if you wanted to go more than 100miles). silent, light, and quick -- it's perfect for commuting. always get interest from it but I can never fully recommend one if it's your only bike. as a 2nd bike, yeah, go for it. lots of fun.

    As a Nissan Leaf owner some of those slagging this technology off it is work in progress, but battery density is increasing year on year ( model s long range as an theoretical range of 400 miles) and yes initially they are expensive ( again battery prices are falling so in the next couple of years price comparison will be a reality) but maintenance and running costs are practical zero, no road tax!
    The charging infrastructure does need to improve, can be unreliable, if you charge in some hotels you need to register you're charging or could end up with a parking fine, but as range gets better with battery technology you'll need too charge less in public anyway.
    If you are commuting you just charge up every night or at work.
    Range does vary with both temperature and riding/ driving style but the same can be said of the combustion engine!
    Can't comment of electric bikes, but electric cars are far more relaxing too drive while also far more fun at traffic lights ( even the leaf because of torque embarrasses allot of cars).
    The tech will get better and they are the future ( grid gets cleaner every year and certainly cuts localized pollution down).
    But I will admit currently they don't meet everyones requirements, but that will come.

    How many miles did you do when you got to the charging station? Also you need a topbox for the cables when you have the fast charge tank, and cost of that add on is a lot extra. Don't get me wrong I would love to ride one, and if I owned one I would always have regen on max.

      @@RichyVida It would be good to see some solid statistics on what regeneration actually provides. Across a whole discharge what proportion can realistically be recovered 5%, 10%?
      Cross country on those sorts of roads doubt there would be that much variation between mode consumption. They are supposed to be very efficient so 1 mile will use a given amount of power to cover it and drag would be in same ball park in either direction. The reason they are better in slower speed urban environments plus no "tickover" loss when stuck in traffic.
      Fast long drags at 60/70 plus will see higher rates of consumption as drag builds rapidly?

    Fascinating stuff Richy, it does look good. I think 1 hour charge time is pretty impressive. I think you need to get a piece of cardboard and a peg, clip it to the forks so it flaps on the spokes and makes a motorbike noise like we used to with our pushbikes when we were kids, lol. I imagine the £3.00 it would have cost to charge while you were out is more than it would cost to charge it at home, that £3.00 probably includes charge towards the cost of the charging points and charging infrastructure! Loving the reviews by the way.

    If you used the most frugal, most economical throttle use and still kept it in 'Beast" mode would the range be better than if you selected super duper economy mode? You said at best what, 160 miles range? Here in hilly, windy Oregon, especially heading North into the teeth of one of our daily summer coastal gales, I would expect the range to suffer greatly despite the best efforts to keep the throttle use light.

    Strange thinking I have ridden this actual bike, when I popped in to see Alec at the EEMC I simply had to take it out for a quick spin!, a couple of weeks ago. The top box did rattle a tad on the bumpy road. I was surprised how tiny it felt when flat-footing it like a toy compared to my FJR! In beast mode, it was mad when the front wheel lifts up, really good fun!!! that £1.55 would be 3 X less if you charged it at home too! we pay 11p per KW at home and our local rapid charger is 26p per KW. Contactless chargers are a lot easier to use than the other ones, when you need to download the app, set up a payment method etc.

Even the odd ride where you need to stop off and charge. Am sure it won;t suit all, which is fine. Interesting review but leaves me with loads of questions. You say your riding buddies may not like waiting for you to recharge, but what if 3 of your buddies are also electric? How long is the wait then. Plus, what if you arrive at your charge station & another group of 4 are already waiting?? Also I’m not sure of the etiquette. Are you supposed to wait with your vehicle as it recharges so that you can hand the charge point over to the next in line without delay, or can you bugger off down the Devils Arse for a couple of hours and let people wait?
    More charging points will alleviate some of the issues, but I’m not sure I’m sold just yet. Keep up the good work sir

      For my group I am the only one who rides an EV. So the 160km range on my bike kind of determines where we can go and where we have to stop for lunch.
      Most places we end up at tend to have more than 1 charging station, or in the worst case I can plug in at the e-bicycle chargers and do a slow charge.
      As for the etiquette, in my experience etiquette is enforced by a Type 2 cable. Or a padlocked Type 1. I've had bicyclists unplug my scooter from a regular outlet because they felt that it was only to charge electric bicycles. And there's no locking a regular wall plug.
      Ofcourse if I know that there's more people waiting to charge I won't get more charge than I really need. Usually a 20-80 charge is all I need and that takes maybe 30 minutes.
      Best thing to do when all charging points are taken and there are none nearby is to just buy the boys a round of coffee and cake. Still costs less than paying for petrol.

    Like it.
    But, consider;
    If the top box and tank were covered in solar panels it would recharge in the sun. Even if you ran out.
    Why does no manufacturer give you the option to wind it down to about 50hp to massively extend your range? I ride everywhere now on about 50hp (Eastern Europe last year) and it was ample. I think range is a big gripe for most folks. (Plus price)
    Lack of noise can be altered. Turn the exhaust into an electrical speaker. Have engine modes to simulate singles, twins, fours, triples etc. etc. Exhaust (speaker output to match)
    Turn the volume up or down depending on location like you do on the radio.
    There are answers to all the questions if you think long enough.
    Give it time. If it's the only way I can ride in 30yrs, bring it on.
    Happy travels

    Hi Richie, did you find yourself taking it slower with the electric bike?
    I’m on my second hybrid car and I find I drive slower on electric, it just seems calmer. I get in my 400bhp Z4 or ride my Tuono and for some reason the world goes into hyper drive ! My son in law works for Tesler, the battery ranges are going to get huge, they are thinking about charging your car on low cost electric midnight to 6, then when you get back from your daily commute, plug the car into the house to put power back into the running of your home.

    I test rode this when my then current bike was a ZZR1400 and I was impressed with the torque it was as least as quick as the ZZR1400 up to 90mph whether in standing starts or roll on's. However after that the bike runs out of power almost as if there was a limiter. The other issue was range the dealer told me that if I rode it in the same manner as the Z it's range would be around 80 miles. Total waste of time for the riding I do and that's before considering the cost of the thing. There are other bikes they sell that would be perfect for short to mid range commuting but again when you consider the cost they are extremely expensive for that. For me to consider one the price needs to come down quite a bit, the range needs to be at least 250 miles with a mixture of sporty and touring riding and the charging times need to decrease, that said they were offering a fast charging lead at a knockdown price of £2000.

    • @JediLeba
      @JediLeba 4 года назад

      bampie1 How many bikes have a range of 250? 250 would be great, but we have a ways to go before that’ll be very viable on a bike. Unless you’re set on crossing the country on a road trip, electric has the ability now to keep you on the road. It’s expensive, but what new tech isn’t? Price drops with time and new innovation.
