    Bear proof garbage can enclosure, awesome! Florida bears are pretty tenacious and persistent and are often spotted in Tallahassee, Fl along the outskirts of the city limits as just as you stated, they love foraging in garb cans for anything that smells good to them. Great job constructing this project Hollis!

      @JeannetteShoreland 5 лет назад +2

      It's all about Nancy's kimchi. Those bears know a good thing when they smell it, and they are probably passing the word around the black bear community as we speak.

    When you do something you do it right Hollis. Very nice and looks good against the house. In fact that would make a nice little shed to keep my garden stuff in. I told my husband, let's see.....I tend to use Rubbermaid sheds or steel aluminum because of the mold and rain here in Florida. Easy upkeep. But this looks great!

    I love your trash enclosure. I have one similar but not as well built. On mine, the top also lifts on a hinge with a hydraulic lift in the corner for ease of lifting and has a latch and lock to keep out critters. This makes putting trash into the can from on top without having to pull the heavy trash can out each time you have trash.

    Nice garbage storage!! We have one bear he/she comes in from Arkansas usually just before summer ends. Her main targets, bird feeders, and the water hummingbird sugar water.
    The beat leaves the garbage cans alone. Our real problem, raccoons! Those suckers are about 28 pounds each. They're very destructive, and when confronted act like they own the cans. Right now we bungee cord the cans, and ratchet tie each. The racoons haven't figured out the ratchet ties, when they do were in trouble.

    Hi Nancy and Hollis, I hope all is well with you at the new homestead. I’d like to ask you what oil mixture you use to discourage insects? My new wax beans came up nicely but just yesterday I noticed a lot of holes on my leaves. I remember you mentioning a oil and water mixture for bugs. I can’t remember what kind it was or the amount.
    If you happen to read this I’d appreciate your help please.
    God’s richest blessings to both of you. 🙌🏻

    Well, I hope your enclosure will hold up against those bears. But I was wondering: I remember that in Virginia, the ordinances disallowed you from having a composter, and you were reduced to composting "in-place/in the soil directly". Does Florida have a similar ordinance in the county or community where you are? Are you not allowed to have a composter? If composters ARE allowed, then the bears would certainly tear them up, why not just make an open compost area? and allow the bears to have what they want.
    I remember my Grandparents would simply take out the "slop-bucket" to the edge of the woods and dump it over the fence onto the slop-pile. If there was any wild animal that could make use of it, so much the better. When it came time to needing rich composted soil for the garden or for my greatgrandma's flower beds, that was certainly the place to go and dig some up.

    no bears for us but after moving to a new property years ago we had a herd of 100 or more raccoons that got into the cans and made huge messes. we put one sort of locking mechanism after another on the cans but those little guys are far more clever than they get credit for. the final solution was racks with chains through the lid and can handles with combo locks - and clearing the land...
