How to Save a Species with an App

- Deep in a cloud forest far, far away are the planet’s last remaining Skywalker gibbons. These small members of the apes family were only identified in 2017 (by, you guessed it, a Star Wars fan), but already they’re endangered. ↠Subscribe: www.youtube.co...
Now, researchers in south-west China have developed an ingenious technique for getting gibbons from different territories to meet and form a partnership - these Skywalkers mate for life. Join us to see how technology can be used as a Force for good to help protect this vanishing species.

The amazing story around the Skywalker gibbons stems from the discovery by a scientist. However, did you know that most new species these days are actually discovered by amateurs? Have a look at Minute Earth's newest video for more: ruclips.net/video/B5fT_ohCl68/видео.html
That's what brought me here! This video is fantastic! Liked and subscribed! Keep up this amazing work! Do you know how they thought of the cell phones? That's so creative!

@@nemosdiary8271 That's a wonderful idea to point out!
This is kinda clever... they made a call on speakers and enhanced the sound to make those monkeys "talk" to each other...

Just like the Tapanuli orangutan.
@microbe Im pretty sure there's already a lot of species that became extinct before they get discovered by researchers.
Wonder how many species went extinct without us ever identifying them.

I AM ROOTING FOR THE TWO GIBBONS 😭😭😭😭😭 ALSO KUDOS TO THE RESEARCHERS ❤❤❤
Yes, Kudos to the researchers, they've done an amazing job! 👏🏽
@@terramater kudos to you guys too! for bringing us the story and the amazing wildlife photography :)
What a great video. It's pretty ingenious to use cell phones like that so they could communicate in real time.
i wonder how many other species might be helped by using everyday tech... maybe rescuing the occasional snail on a pavement is doing a bit too?

We're happy to hear that! Thanks for watching! :)

Great to hear that you like our Skywalker video, thanks!
Super something never happened before
Better than any dating site ive ever used
Many of the gibbons here will not survive longer as they die off from falling from trees. They lose balance when they feed as they use chopsticks :D.
Hahaha, it is great to see my colleagues in the video!

We have a new Romeo and Juliet story here
I don't speak Monke but looking at his speed she must have said that her parents aren't home.
Gibbons don’t speak monkey either, since they are actually apes.
@@incanusolorin2607 You telling me monkey and ape aren't the same thing? I thought it were just different words for the same thing.
@@Zantides Nope. Apes and monkeys are all primates (and, more specifically, dry-nosed primates), but there are key differences between them. For example, monkeys have tails and apes don’t. Apes also have larger brains, longer arms and shortened thumbs. While monkeys walk on top of branches when in the trees, apes move through the trees by swinging below the branches. Examples of apes are chimpanzees, orangoutangs, gorillas and bonobos. Apes (specially chimps and bonobos) are also more closely related to humans than monkeys.

They need a small captive breeding and release program to raise the population and mix the gene pool. And while there they could train them to use their own mobile phones and create profiles on dating sites like Plenty of Monkeys

"May the force be with them" - brilliant conclusion
“ They’re going to become matchmakers”
Probably the only time I approve of it
"Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match!" - the gibbon, probably

Kudos to producer Eva for the title! :)
It doesn't matter what species we're talking about they all have the same problem, not enough room to live. We've literally infested the planet to the extent that there's no wilderness left. We *need* to start using far more efficient farming methods, and re-wild as much of the earth as possible. Otherwise all conservation efforts are in vain.
Your words! 🙌🏽
As you've already said, farming (=deforestation) is one of our biggest problems and right now it's more important than ever that we change our methods and protect the last remaining wild habitats.

Stay tuned to find out!
Man these guys are just awesome.
Indeed!
They are "unable to meet" "especially due to roads" that are 25' wide or less? That makes absolutely no sense. Of course a gibbon can cross a road. This is the first video of yours I've seen and in less than 2 minutes I'm already very disappointed. I don't get why SO many nature videos have incredibly inaccurate things in the narration. I'm coming over from Animalogic who just said something batshit crazy about kangaroos (that their max jump is 2m long, yet they can jump 3m high).
monkeys are afraid of people existence. these apes are wild. if they ever see any sign of humans they will go deeper into the forest.
Roads are unusual for them so they will not cross co'z they are not familiar with it.
You do understand that road making, and its daily/constant/perodical usage makes the gibbons go away?
Its an extremely strange thing for them to see, hear, and live near by it. So by instict they will distance themselves from the roads that actually pass by their ecosystem.
@@fajia3479 you still have an explain to me how a gibbon "can't" cross a 25 foot wide road.

Their number is lower than wild pandas.Thank you for allowing the world to pay more attention to other endangered species other than pandas.
Because of rampent commercialization and rampent urbanization(destruction on nature),various plants and animal species are facing disapoear. That's why the viruses(SARS and Covid-19) can not survive in the wild and try to host on humanbeings.Because the viruses used to host on wild animals can not find enough hosts anymore.
How human treat Earth, nature and other lives is how we treat ourselved. We are one.🙏🏻
Isaiah 65:21-25 a promise of the true God there will be thousends and thousends of them in the new world the skywalker gibbon
This is an awesome display of technology's power for good. (That is awesome as in "awe inspiring", not the colloquial way the word is bantered about.) Win or lose, this species was *most likely* given one more generation on this planet, and that could be the tipping point for such a small number of breeding pairs. I hope the scales tip in their favor, but even if they do not this story put a genuine smile on my face.
