Why I think old are better: - music - visuals - Greek mythology is closer to my heart than Norse - gameplay, gameplay and gameplay - brutality - story is actually interesting
One of the few franchises that grew up with the fanbase. As kids we enjoyed the mindless violence and action, and as adults we get a much better writting and characater development. I wish pokemon would learn from santa monica
Ehhh, I can't say the new games are just down right better. You didn't stay on the old games long enough to truly explain them, they're deep and detailed in their own way. You should check out some of tactical bacon productions videos, he explains all this wayyyyyyy better. I still gave you a like because it isn't bad content.
I appreciate the feedback! It's hard to make a video as detailed as I wish it to be cause of time constraints but I definitely hear what you're saying and I agree! I'll consider this for future videos. Thanks for the support!
If they made a god of war movie with these themes that would be objectively okay. However, these are games not movies. Gameplay is just as important, if not more than story. As a story, the new god of war games are okay. However, it’s clear the developers cared more about story. For those reasons, they’re inferior.
Totally agree, a story is not why video games are fun. Great combat and puzzles is a huge factor in why the classic GoWs succeeded so much, they were fun to play. It is also worth noting that (though a "better" story is subjective) the classics did have a complex story, and Kratos was a intricate character. The new GoW's heavily dumb down combat and puzzles for their story (Ragnorok is better with it's gameplay than 2018, but still), the third person camera that's "supposed to give a more personal experience with Kratos" makes trying to just look around the arena a chore when that fixed camera made everything visibile, and therefore made combat better. The new games hold up as "Cinematic Experiences" and not video games.
You guys make a fair argument. A story is not the "end all be all" and specially now that I'm playing GoW 2 again, I find the older games more challenging than the new ones. However I can't help but think that the series kinda had to evolve, maybe some tunning around the difficulty could have been done and adding more interesting puzzles, I'll give you that, but copycats of the franchise were being made, for example, "Dante's Inferno" so I guess the devs kinda wanted to move past it. The only critiscm that I have about the old story is that Kratos was always an angry man that wanted to forget the horrible things we had been forced into doing, and would go to all types of lengths (good or bad) to get what he wanted. I like the fact that he is a bit changed from that and that the team kinda departed from the old premise
@@SoullusYT I think it was a right move by Santa Monica as we've seen a lot of Kratos' vicious side more than his human side, we know that Kratos would give up all his powers if it meant being with his daughter again. Kratos fought tooth and nail to protect his brother, a man who he held very dear and wished him to be a great spartan when they were kids, Kratos even buried Deimos when he fell to the god Thanatos. I'd recommend the Tactical Bacon Productions video "What everybody gets wrong about Kratos", one point he makes is that in the chronologically earlier games Kratos has shown much of his humanity, like being hesitant on killing, saving civillians, and even having a respect for the gods. It is throughout the games where more and more Kratos gets used more and more, even being denied to take his own life to do the gods bidding. Kratos does not ever get what he asked for from the gods, but he does face more and more betrayal from them. So by the time GoW 3 hits, Kratos has lost all humanity (except when being with Pandora) and he doesnt care who he has to kill to take Zeus' life (it is also said that Kratos released all of his pent up anger towards the other gods).
@@SoullusYT I see your point; however, just make a brand new IP. A spiritual successor to god of war would’ve been great. For example, in the 2018 game play as baldur. Follow Odin and Thor’s relationship with baldur. Essentially, his journey to break the control Odin had on his life. It wouldn’t need to be a revenge story. It could be a story about trying to find peace.
Both are good in their own ways. In term of gameplay, both introduces very different mechanic while make it both fun and enjoyable. The lessons of willpower resilience and perseverance were always present in the story, they just weren't overtly expressed like they are in the latest games, they were expressed with subtlety. Moreover, Kratos stoicism in the latest games comes across as apathy more than anything. In the first game especially, he doesn't want to get involved with anything in the world that doesn't concern their goals, even if it might affect them in the future. In ragnarok, the devs had the chance to showcase his stoic qualities through decision making, but instead kratos just follows the decisions others make for him. Even when he is given the title of 'general' we see nothing of the values you describe, except in one scene where he tells Atreus to open his heart to the midgardians suffering. Is that really the pinnacle of his character progression?
I don't get the "kratos just follows the decisions others make for him" take. He literally refuses Odin's offer of peace to him which kicks off this whole story. Sure there ARE scenes where h follows others but again how exactly is that bad? And the pinnacle of his character progression is him changing & deciding to "be better". Adding to that him finally letting his guard down with Atreus & telling him that he was wrong for holding him so close.
@@Comicbroe405 bruh he decided to be better in gow4. He opened himself up in gow4, that was the whole point and ragnarok pretended it didn't happen. The new games just beat you in the head with an arc he already had in GOW3 by introducing Atreus and giving kratos a more passive role. All the devs did was remove the interesting part of kratos' personality and replaced it with grunting and "wise" words, ultimately making kratos a side character we play most of the game with
I see why you could see it that way, the only reason why I disagree is because although his vengeance on the Greek Gods is justified, does that necessarily mean that the world was left a better place in the aftermath? Again, like in the video, I might be wrong, it's just my interpretation of the whole story. Keep in mind though, I love all the games, my preference on the new ones is not an argument to shit on the old ones, it's just a franchise that evolved.
