    Great job by yourself and the deckhand. Awesome gaff shot.

      Definitely going back on in the future, the captain tried to look for his own schools instead of following the fleet and tried his best to chase down the fish. Deckhand helped save me from the tangle and got a perfect headshot

      @@DerrickVan yeah and on a foul hooked fish too. Not an easy fight or gaff job. I lost an easy 80-100lb yellowfin this past fall at the boat foul hooked with a verticao jig. Private boat on the east coast so very different but same idea. Actually think the front assist hook pulled during the fight but the rear hook caught the top of the fishes head somehow. 9/0 Shout Kudoku hooks are like needles. Went from screaming drag to pulling in a trash bag. Fish surfaced, made a quick turn, and I was left with nada. Would've released it either way but still sucked. Enjoyed watching.

    I think u have much better technique and skills with catching BFT with jigging than with with live bait.... lol I see u like to pint the rod downward just like when u got BFT on with jigging set up....How many short trips like this do you do a year? I do more 8 to 16 day trips over the year but since the Covid I switched to shorter trips 3days or less......Another good video from you

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  6 месяцев назад

      @tnphung thanks, I really like jigging more now lol, much easier in my opinion. I normally do like 7 short trips a year

    Great video!!!!
    Now it's been couple years what are your thoughts on the MC cast control option? Does it affect casting live bait? Would the non mc cast further? What your pro & con? I want the raptor model on the sx but the mc is delaying my decision. Avet does sale raptor with non-mc option but not in the sx model

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  Год назад +1

      Thank you! Personally when I first thought about buying with the MC feature I thought it was going to help, however I find it pointless now with more casting experience. I feel like it slows down the live bait and gives it unneeded resistance because even at its lowest setting mc is still activated. It's a cool gimmick until you never use it again. Avet doesn't sell raptor models without mc I believe

      Thanks for the quick response!!! You helped me made my decision. I had a bad feeling that the mc would somewhat cause the freespool for live bait Yes Avet now sales raptor series with non-mc except the sx model.

  • @JimWellman
    @JimWellman 10 месяцев назад

    How is the Proteus holding up, and how are you liking it after all these years? I'm thinking about getting one, but a 7' xxh with an Avet HXW (something like that) as a heavier setup for the monsters (possibly their 7' 4" tuna model. I've just never held one, so I'm curious. Thanks in advance and thanks for posting the vids.

    How dose the real hold up to bluefin and what line u got on their?dose it carry enough line the drag seems to be to much for its capacity

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  Год назад

      I've caught bluefin up to 50lb on the reel and have no issues with line capacity, the high drag allows me to fish heavier line so it balances out the smaller capacity

    When a line gets crossed like that, it only requires you to unwrap 1x. Seeing the mate go back and forth, I kind of knew they would need to cut. Then he cut the guys jig off. That is why I don’t fish on these kinds of boats.

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  3 года назад +1

      Yea it's kind of tough fishing on the boats, but I enjoy it though because you get to meet new people and no need for washing down boats, but you have to deal with 30 more people, so you win some you lose some. Thanks for watching my video man and thank you for your support!
