    Thanks for all the info. Derick, I'm going to try it on my august 25th trip. I live up north san Francisco. We should go fish together sometime

    Derrick, it must have been a blast fishing with the guys from West Coast Jiggers! I'm glad to see you get after them. Looks like you have a new setup? Great!

      Thanks it was really fun! I had that setup for a year now but it's the first time I used it for a bigger bluefin!

    Captain Mike does a great job of keeping everyone engaged and informed. Just came off of a 1.5 day with @pacificdawnfishing. Boat limits of 40 to 60 pounders.

      @@DerrickVan for sure bro. Going to try some sinker rigs. Got my 40,60,80 fluoro leaders and some heavy 300 for night time (mono). A few SK flats and some rip rollers. We will see what we get into. My PB is 90 pounds hoping to break into the 100 pound range. Can only dream haha. The jigs you drop looks like they’re 200-300 knife jigs ? Do you do heavy leaders or stick to like 80#. I have a talica 50, raptor avet LX and a lighter two speed accurate valiant 400.
      I’m planning to do a sinker rig if we get to the zone before sun down. 60 or 80 pound leader on the avet LX.

      @HVACOG I was using a 300g jig when I got bit. It was on 140lb for the bigger bluefin and 120lb for the smaller one.

    What reel size do you recommend. I’ve thought about going on some tuna charters. The 2 conventional reels I have is a Penn fathom 25 and a avet mxl. I mostly used those reels for lingcod and halibut

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  3 месяца назад

      For night time I would go with a fathom 40 if you want to stick with penn fathoms

    You still using your Maxel Transformer F70? You still liking your choice? If you could, would you choose a different reel?

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  4 месяца назад +1

      It's a great reel I love using it. If I were to use a different reel, it would probably be a Maxel Rage or a Jigging Master Monster Game. I have used both reels and they are good jigging reels

      @@DerrickVan Do you ever wish you had a 2nd gear? Also what class of fish have you caught on this setup? What rod do you pair it with? Gonna hope on the Pac Queen in July. Looking to gear up!

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  4 месяца назад

      @@jopunyao I never need 2nd gear because these reels are already geared lower than a typical high gear on a 2 speed reel. I've caught fish up to 150lb on these reels personally with no issue. I know of people who catch even bigger bluefin on these single speed reels. I pair my maxel with a Phenix Megalodon 608 and I love it for the amount of action it gives to the jig

  • @ja177es9

    How come you had your rod tip pointed straight down at the water for a lot of the fight? Is that intentional?

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  4 месяца назад

      It is a technique to transfer the load from the rod to the reel, it is a technique that is new on the West Coast but is very standard in Japan. Haven't lost a fish yet and it has been very effective to reel these big bluefin in quick
