I have reached the same conclusion with my own personal experience after 7 months of using the yoke. I like the round steering wheel more after I switched back. The grass isn't always greener on other side.
Jim, most of your points while not wrong, are really knit picking from the overall experience. I get that it comes down to personal preference. I’ve had the Yoke in my 3 for 2.5 years. The advantages for me are more than just ease of FSD nag prevention. It’s Ingress and Egress. I’m a Big guy and with the shallower foot wells in the 3 due to the HV pack, my right thigh would always hit the bottom of the whee getting out as twisted to the left. Even with optimal positioning for “easy entry “. With the yoke, I’m able to gain about 6” of open clearance by rolling it upside down when parked. The other benefit is when the yoke is rolled over I now have a high grab point to aid in exiting. I’m guessing this is less of issue with the Y due to its elevated seating position which helps recreate a normal footwell depth. I will not be switching back because the advantages for me outweigh the disadvantages, which to me are minor inconveniences that amount to less than 1% total driving time.
Very Good points about safety. I had mentioned before that an obvious disadvantage of a yoke and buttons instead of stocks was in busy traffic circles. A greater chance of error when you need to be focusing on everything around the vehicle instead of where the yoke and turn signal buttons are.
I’ve had the same yoke in my M3 for five months and I love it. I don’t have FSD, so I don’t have the same safety concerns. For me, it works great for city driving and as he said, it’s great for Autopilot on long road trips. Nearly zero nags and it’s so comfortable to hang my hands on the bottom of the yoke.
NHTSA actually has a guide to the safe way to steer. The recommended is hand over hand. FYI, that was exactly what I was taught in drivers ed 50 years ago. I switched to the yoke 2 years ago and love it. I also installed an additional dashboard and admit now I use that even more than the main screen. I have never really had any issues with the yoke. Parking is easy with either.
FWIW, I’ve had the same yoke in my M3 for five months and I love it. I don’t have FSD, so I don’t have the same safety concerns. For me, it works great for city driving and as he said, it’s great for Autopilot on long road trips. Nearly zero nags and it’s so comfortable to hang my hands on the bottom of the yoke.
initially when the yoke came I was intrigued and was considering installing the yoke in my “Y” but after watching a few more videos I changed my mind…I am glad I did not install one thanks for your video
Glad you gave it a fair shot to get real long term impressions of it. Seems kind of cool to me, but like you said the coolness wears off after a while. Maybe my next car will be steer by wire. 😄
I forgot about Knight Rider. I was thinking the Adam West Batmobile. Fun fact: They went back to the wheel after some time for some of the reasons you mentioned. It just wasn't sufficiently safe to operate for the stunt and other drivers.
A WARNING: I asked Grok: "Should a person disconnect the 12V battery in a Tesla before removing the airbag module?" Grok @grok replied: "Well, it's a bit like asking if you should wear a helmet before jumping out of a plane. Technically, you could do it without the helmet, but it's not the best idea. In all seriousness, it is recommended to disconnect the 12V battery in a Tesla before removing the airbag module. This is because there is a risk of accidentally triggering the airbag while working on the module, which could lead to injury or damage to the vehicle. It's always better to be safe than sorry, especially when dealing with explosive devices like airbags."
I learnt this from when I had to replace the ignition switch in my Honda Pilot. There were stern warning to disconnect the 12V battery or the airbag in the steering wheel could accidentally deploy and cause serious injury. I guess it the same on a Tesla according to Grok....
The yoke is a non-solution to a non-problem. Even with variable steering ratio, are you going to have enough steering precision within a field of course 140 degrees of movement each direction? Wrong tool for the job.
Yeah I get conflicted with mine at times. I’ve actually found it easier to just migrate my hand more center and spin it in tight spots. But in a traffic higher speed situation that is not as safe and have to play around with hand position and not hitting the stalks accidentally. Looks / feels cool and there are times I actually feel I have more leverage with it. Hand over hand not so much.
I did my first driving test in 1975 in Switzerland. Hand over hand was an absolute no no. Nowadays they sell more models S and X with Yokes than wheels over there and have very very limited FSD. Was planning a model X with yoke but in Alpine roads the wheel must be the better option.
Knight Rider is a TV show...Don't yoke around! This is real life, stay safe with a round wheel for driving. Thank you sir for switching back. Thank you for showing us what not to do. And that's no yoke...sorry had to do it!
Tesla mobile tech here. Avoid these mods at all costs. I’ve seen several 3/Y’s where the airbag deployed after an accident and the new cover made the airbag deploy incorrectly and even some pieces of the cover itself ejected right in the face of the driver. Worst part is that when we or whoever does the documentation for the insurance company we take note of the mod. The insurance then denies any compensation for damage in your face since your mod may have caused it. Also, this voids quite some warranties in your car. We can see in our logs every single connector you have disconnected and reconnected as soon as we connect to your car for any service you may need. These videos are all either fully paid or sponsored by the manufacturers. And they don’t care about your safety. It’s just not worth it.
I wonder if a slightly bigger aftermarket round wheel might eventually be the best of both worlds. Also those steering wheel air bag modules make me nervous! It would be gruesome injuries if it went off when pushing the horn. I never push my horn because of it. I know they are extremely dangerous for small people and kids and also if you wear glasses. Many people are blind now thanks to steering wheel air bags.
I’m getting a custom made (red) yoke for my Red Tesla M3. I wanted to watch your video before to do it to see if any major issues were related to installing a yoke, but all the points you mentioned really comes down to personal preference. So, the yoke has gotta go ON for me instead 😁
Probably not now that there is a round wheel option. Just don't like paying more for it. I guess if I had S or X money, I would go with the round wheel. Thanks for watching!
So, could you please tell us what you perceive to be the benefits of the yoke? I am genuinely wondering. I can’t think of any benefit other than not potentially obscuring the binnacle, but that’s a problem that has been solved easily since the 1920s, and of course the Model 3/Y doesn’t even have a binnacle.
I actually just installed my Hansshow yoke 4 days ago in my 2023 Model 3. I love it. I do not do the hand over hand... it's more of a Heisman maneuver by grabbing the bottom of the wheel to turn. No issues taking it through round abouts, a 360 turn, or parking garages. Thank you for all of your videos. Keep them coming.
I have reached the same conclusion with my own personal experience after 7 months of using the yoke. I like the round steering wheel more after I switched back. The grass isn't always greener on other side.
It is not. Thanks for watching!
I love the addition of a good dad “yoke” at the end 😂
Had to do it. :)
I ditched mine also. A whole wheel is so much more comfortable
I agree. I should have switched back a while ago.

100% agreement with you that a yoke makes no sense on a steering setup like the Model 3/Y.
Appreciate that. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the info. I wanted to get the yoke thing for my model 3 but you convinced me otherwise.
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!

@@iowateslaonly way I would convert to the yoke

Thanks! I just wish the round wheel was an inch wider.
My Model S wheel is too big and the MY is too small
Very honest review. I will just wrap my rkund wheel in alcantara

We appreciate the video please give us an update after the 6 months. AKA now without the yoke

Thanks for the feedback. I would agree with the more leverage comment. I just didn't find that I needed that in the end. Thanks for watching!
Thanks I was searching or post-yoke videos for a while. Really appreciate the honest critique after everyone's hype a year ago!
do you still have the rear screen?
Thanks for enlightening me sir! I love your videos.

Go with the round option on the X. Thanks for watching!
AGREE.. YOK feels more dangerous and has high chances of making mistakes which can cost a LOT !!!
I'm still keeping mine. It's a nice and simple addition.
I just got a yoke from Amazon (an el cheapo one for a model 3) and it's coming right back off. It was fun to try, but no way.

I’m getting a yoke for my Tesla 3 I’m going to installed to see the difference between those two
I appreciate your good judgment.
I get there eventually. Thanks for watching!
Any plans for yoke? If be interested and live near you 🤷🏻♂️
Stay tuned to my X account. I'm planning on giving it away. Thanks for watching!
Real honest RUclipsr
Thanks. I try to be.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on the yoke. Are you planning on selling it? I'd be interested if you do.
Stay tuned to my X account. I'll be posting something soon. Probably going to give it away in a drawing. Thanks for watching!
Are you gonna sell that yoke I’m interested
Perhaps. Stay tuned to my X account for details.
👍🏼
You might like the cyber truck wheel on your car. I just put it in on my model Y. It’s safer than a Yoke.
thank you for this video

Yokes are meant for racing f1 cars and planes. Nothing else. Yokes for cars/trucks is just plain stupid and unsafe.
Agreed.
I love my yoke on the 2023 model S. It’s a personal preference.
yoke is a no-no without steering by wire

I would like to see a whole wheel style with a flatened top and bottom like the wheel on the new Lucid Gravity
That sounds a lot like the Cybertruck wheel.
