Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.

The first referenced that I ever encountered to Yazidis was in an H.P. Lovecraft story. In the "Horror at Red Hook" Lovecraft refers to them as "the Yezidis, last survivors of the Persian devil-worshippers". So, there is an example of the type of incorrect characterizations of their belief system that they have historically suffered.

I helped build a Habitat for Humanity house for a family of Yazidi refugees a few years ago. One of the more interesting work days on that house was when we had a group of international students come to paint the house. Several of those students were Saudi Arabians, whom I assume were Wahhabi. I don't think I've ever seen more shock on anyone's face than the moment we told then they would be working to help Yadizis from Iran. Those student didn't get much work done as they took several long breaks for prayer.
@@hermescarraro3393Sunni Muslims are supposed to pray five times each day. This takes up varying amounts of time, but it does tend to interrupt the work day. I have a 12th century Ezidi fire bowl made of bronze. The seven angels & Sheikh Adi ibn Musa are depicted by engraving & perforated filigree around it's circumference. On the base is a geometric engraving which represents the Melek Taus. If a flame is placed in the bowl in a dark room, the perforations emit projections of light on the walls. It is a beautiful relic & fine work of art.

To me it seems like there was a proto Hindu religion which evolved in 2 different ways in 2 different geographical location while retaining many similarities.
I highly doubt it. Yazidism is a part of a larger realm of Iranian religions collectively termed 'Yazdanism'. Therefore, it is highly unlikely it is related to Hinduism. If anything, Yazidism is a sub sect of Zoroastrian ism. Yazidism is monotheistic, unlike Hinduism. The shape of lamps cannot be used as a comparison. It doesn't act as concrete evidence.
@रामशिष्यऽर्यः । Yazidism was a part of the Abrahamic Zoroastrian Covenant. The First Prophet (Nabi) that the Yazidis recognize is Adam. Also, all the angels of Yazidis are mentioned in the Torah, the New Testament and the Quran. Nowhere are they mentioned in any Hindu work. Yes you are correct. Monotheism is what is the real Hinduism.

I spent my second deployment at Sinjar and on Sinjar Mountain. I always took interest in their culture. I wish there was more information on the old temple on Sinjar peek. Thank you
The temple is in UNESCO right because it turned out to be 4000 years old. But as a Yazidi I don't believe that it will exist for long. In the past we used to hide so others wouldn't know of our existence and that's how we protected ourselves and our temples from outsiders. But now because everyone knows the place of the temple they might go and b0mb it. They do it all the time. My dad died in a suicide bombing and one day someone also bombed himself in the middle of our village without any reason and that was even before is!s existed.
Hey Andrew, you're an inspiration to me as a Junior in highschool who plans to go into religious studies. Do you have any tips on how to get in and what to study beforehand? Is religious studies a viable career option/in demand?
Religious studies isn't in high demand per se, but any job which involves interacting with people of various backgrounds will benefit from a degree in it. In general, I advise people to study what makes them happy and usually they will be able to do something with it if they are willing to work hard. Studying something you love will make it feel less difficult when trying to find or create a career. But if you're looking for an easy way to make money, you're looking in the wrong place.
Pursue such study at a public (State) university. Private colleges tend to have a historical connection to some Christian denomination. May have very strong theology studies but weak when it comes to a comprehensive and general study of religion or focus on non Christian religion. I would recommend Indiana University (Bloomington), that is where I did my graduate work in Religious Studies. Well rounded and balanced offerings.
Your videos have inspired me to have a more in depth understanding of my own faith (Christianity) and the faiths of others. Your videos are very informative and they are always worth the view.

First kurd who accepted the fact. Although I'm also an atheist but I'm still a ezidy and will not leave my group. If you understand the meaning of the words ezdi and khude in Kurdish you will understand what you believed in and why the kurds still use the name khuda. Ezdi or Ezda is made up of two word. Ez meaning Me and das meaning give or created and khu meaning himself and da meaning give. The meaning is god is the self given while he gave us or created us. Every time we call ourselves ezidi we are just saying created us (we are the creation of god). It has no deep meaning though because I really don't believe in god.
They could also be incorporating Hinduism. The peacock is a symbol of Lord Krishna and I’ve seen Yazidi iconology with A person riding a peacock who had markings on their foreheads that resemble both Vaisnava and Saivite markings. One of Krishnas sons in their scriptures rides a peacock in battle. The seven seers or Siddhas are used in Hinduism and also represent the planets. Too many similarities!
Exactly. Some theorists say when the plates were still moving, the South Indian civilization who were followers of the cult of Skanda or God who rides the peacock dispersed. So most likely they branched off to middle East and developed into modern Yazidism

If I remember correctly (speaking from memory as I haven't been able to find the source) Yazidi tradition also has a story in which all the angels bow before the newly created Adam except for Melek Tawus; when God asks him why he isn't bowing, Melek Tawus replies "because You told us earlier to bow to no creature but You", then God rewards him by elevating him above the rest of the angels. A similar story exists in the Muslim and Judeo-christian traditions, but in that one it's Satan/Eblis who won't bow to Adam, and he is _punished_ for it, not rewarded. All in all, I guess it's not surprising that people took the Yazidis for devil worshippers...
Technically Iblis wasn't punished for not bowing to Adam. Iblis had been given special permissions from God such as interacting with the angels, which other djinn were not permitted to do, because he was loved by God. Then he disobeyed God's command, questioned God's decision to create Adam essentially telling God He had made a mistake, and declared himself to be better than Adam because he was made from fire while man was made from clay. He put his love for himself over his love for God. In Islam it is said that anyone with an ounce of arrogance in their heart will not enter Paradise, and it sounds like Iblis had pounds of it.
Uhmm Christian tradition has no beliefs such as Satan and other Angels getting commanded to bow to Adam. I think Islam and maybe Judaism have such beliefs, but certainly not Christianity
Actually, the idea of Satan/Iblis being praiseworthy for refusing to prostrate to Adam actually existed among some extreme (from an orthodox Sunni point of view) Sufi figures, such as Mansur al-Hallaj. I wonder if his ideas somehow seeped to Sheikh Adi's thought (and thus Yezidis).

16:02 It's probably because there's a Caliph named Yezid in early Umayyad Era, who's infamous for killing Hussein(son of Ali, who was a close follower and cousin of Muhammad) and his followers in an ambush. Ezidis were heavily influenced by Sufis as you mentioned. Sufi beliefs are closer to Shias/Alawites who were the followers of Ali. Hence, Ezidis probably share a similar disdain against Yezid. There's a phrase in Turkish as "Yezid'in dölü"(offspring of Yezid) to refer someone as cruel and/or mischevious. Disdain against Yezid is common in Islamic world, and even stronger in Shia/Shia influenced communities.

About Malek Tawus : it's a peacock and I'm studying Arabic so I can tell you "Tawus" probably comes from the Arabic "Taws" (peacock) and I'm guessing "Malek" is from the Arabic "malik", which I think is one of the 99 Names, which means "the possessor/the king". Also, in Amazigh "Malika" means angel. So we could conclude that "Malek Tawus" means "Peacock Angel".

A probable explanation for linking of Melek Taws to “Satan” from Muslim and Christian zealots might be from confusing Melek Taws with the peacock tailed arch demon of the Sepharvaim(one of the twin cities supposedly located by the Euphrates),Adramelech(“magnificent king”). Which is still grossly ignorant when taken into consideration that adramelech is represented as peacock-tailed AND donkey headed man while Melek Taus is depicted as a normal peacock. Anyways, I appreciate this video’s content for being as factually accurate and unbiased, it’s great being more educated of other spiritual traditions.
The story of Paradise probably also led to this misconception. "So to you, Melek Taws is a divine being. And what did that Melek Taws do?" "He caused Adam to leave Paradise." "So, the snake? I.e. Satan?"

When I learned about the Yazidis a few weeks ago, this channel is the first place I checked for further information on them. Glad to finally see it.
There was a BBC series a little over a decade ago called Around the World in 80 Faiths. It was overall dilettantish. But they had a fascinating episode on the Yazidi with footage in Lalesh. I recommend it for the visuals alone.

What do you mean?
Why did they pray?
Was it because they felt bad for them or because they were disgusted by them and felt sinful?

Hey Andrew, you're an inspiration to me as a Junior in highschool who plans to go into religious studies. Do you have any tips on how to get in and what to study beforehand? Is religious studies a viable career option/in demand?
The Varieties of Religious Experience by William James

Exactly. Some theorists say when the plates were still moving, the South Indian civilization who were followers of the cult of Skanda or God who rides the peacock dispersed. So most likely they branched off to middle East and developed into modern Yazidism

hiya! Yazidi girl here! My father is Kurdish and my (STEP) mother is Filipino! I like how you’ve talked about our culture
@@jehielhernandez8152 I'll have to check up on that! Edited my original comment just to be on the safe side.

Those peshmerga ran away when is!s came to the yezidy village without shooting one shot. They left us to be massacred.

Also there were people before Indoeuropeans there, Hurrians notably. Also Ezidis don't call their angel "Satan", that's a Judaic (Christian and Muslim) insult or comparison from their own mythologies. The Peacock Angel is most similar to Prometheus maybe (in intent of revealing knowledge and thus making Humankind progress and not remain stagnated in a primitive lifestyle). This idea has also reached Western thought in various ways, including some revival of Luciferianism (rather than "Satanism") as the antagonist light-bearer in opposition to an overprotective obscurantist "God".
The Yazidi Xwade sounds very similar to the Persian 'Khoda" which means God.
If I'm not mistaking, both Kurdish and Iranian have a relatively recent deviation from their parental proto-language

Da-de is to give- given

Yes? Catholicism is a branch of Christianity; the branch that declared the trinity as dogma.
@@Miatpi, yes, but in one entry in the bible the archangel Raphael speaks of being one of seven archangels serving god.
Great video! Germany here and I can report that the Yazidi people are very respectable people. Even the Kurdish people (from Iraq) who are Muslims are very respectable people. The notion that all Kurds were Yazidi before Mohammed came around seems to be standard amongst Yazidis. Also consider the "seven Spirits before the throne of God" in the christian book of Revelations. Again! Great video, very much appreciated.
They arent attacking other religions and exclaming abouth Allah as the only God?

Yes...... i don’t understand people who seek out knowledge of other people or their religions but obviously are so bias that their ignorance is profound.
"This led journalists to SCRAMBLE to figure out enough to pretend they knew what yazidi were."

I first came across yazidism in Alan Moore's Top 10, where one of the superhero cops is a Yazidi named "King Peacock". That must have been 20 years ago. I was super curious to learn more but it was difficult to find information online at the time. Really cool to see this video now.
Another great video as always RFB! I’ve long been interested in the minority Abrahamic and Proto-Abrahamic religions of the Middle East.
This video was so interesting. I have a degree in World Religions as well as having dated a Kurd for over 3 years and your vid is the first I'm hearing of Yazidis. Very nice. : )

Christianity didn't borrow anything, it was Born out of it, they are linked.
Yeah, Christianity is nothing but a Jewish sect (and so is Islam) but as Talmudic Jewish the video's author is clearly sectarian in this regard, what is a pity to his own understanding.
@Cosmic Reality - THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD: CHAOS, AND YOU ARE ITS AVATAR.
You are an IDOLATER of words! And ironically you robotically prostrate five times a day to a rock. Shame on you unworthy divine avatar who rejects the only true holy book, which is facts and SCIENCE.
Sound like a very peaceful belief system, minding their own business and not trying to expand.
As a Hindu I find some striking similarity.
The most prominent is the concept of
1) *Rebirth* by soul leaving the body after death and taking new birth in a new body based on deeds of present life(karma)
This is the foundation of Hindu Belief system.
2) 7 angels or divine beings governing humanity, we call them SaptaRishis 7 divine beings born out of Bhrama.
3) praying facing the sun.
Etc.
Falsch, taus könnte auch Gott bedeuten
@@benta440 in arabic? Nope tawus means only peackock , I'm a native arabic speaker and the original comment did a great job explaining the words

This iis very interesting. The peacock was also seen as a personification of God in Celtic Christianity.
Could you expand on this point? I've never heard of this aspect of Celtic belief.
@@pirbird14 In the Illustrated Book of Kells, the Four Gospels there are many illustrations of animals. The peacock is one. Augustine even said the peacock could represent the Christ resurrected, as it's flesh does not corrupt as readily as that of other animals. You guys have to do a research in South India as people from Tamil Nadu worship 'sapta kanniga' (seven Angels). Yazidism must have originated from India several thousand years ago.

And what did that Melek Taws do?"
"He caused Adam to leave Paradise."
"So, the snake? I.e. Satan?"
These people worship is similar to South Indian Tamil community. The bronze lamp with the peacock on the top is similar to tamil cultural thing. The two light in the outside area also similar. Caste system is also same. If you want more information check it out. Thank you 😊

They way I learned about Yazidis existing was when whole Iberia converted to this religion in CKII.

I must have been considered too young to process the concept of heresy, so the teacher just said that Spain practised a less spartan expression of Islam & the Moors conquered them to put them right.
I wonder if the unusual direction of the Qibla in early Spanish Mosques is in any way related to the heretical group ?
