Thanks, this actually helps me start my project I have a mk6 in which the shade slider's cloth came off and have to re glued it back. I had no idea where to begin with.
So simple once someone shows you how. My caddy STS sunshade material is hanging down now. My Monte is moon roof have to loosen the track screws glass all the way open. Good ole RUclips, made for us that need help I can rebuild automatic trans, engines, brakes had college classes to learn to work on my own cars. Sometimes someone had to show you their trick. Thanks man.
Thanks so much!! Currently I'm in the process of slowly reworking the interior of my 03 GTi. The rear 1/4 panels are done and the P/S door. After I finish the D/S door it's on to the headliner. 😂
Mk5 GTI sunroof switch no longer points to the center mark, activating sunroof to completely close/seal. I need to softly turn switch to a few clicks from center mark, then it settles in and closes/sets. I saw you mention replacing the headliner console on the Mk4 R32 video list, but didn't find one for it. Did you post one? Great vid's! Keep them coming!! Thanks!
Hey Charles! I really enjoy watching your videos I own a Jetta mk4 myself, got lots of work to get done and one has to with my sunroof. Instead of removing the glass. My actual sun roof cover is preventing my sunroof glass to fully open and it sounds like something is stuck. Do you happen to know what I need to do to fix this? I love my sunroof and I want it to work like it was working naturally please read my comment I need your help!
Bullcrab.. Mk7 sunroof, roof lining and sunroof assembly takes tops 45 minutes to take out. Changing the assembly takes about 3-4 hours. Including coffee breaks.
I don't have an exact number, but if I say I've done a hundred sun/moon roof jobs on the different models over the last 2 years I don't think I'm that far off... The only thing that's a bit challenging is to get the curtain in without damaging the springs...
Yup. And I can read in the forums there's currently a general issue where the water drain channels will crack and leak inside the car, affecting all Golfs and GTI's made in Mexico (no R as far as I know). VW's fix is to glue it all around :/
hello Humble Mechanic, thank you for this video; do you have a tuto for adjustment of the sliding sunroof toothed rack;? mine is misaligned due to opening during freezing conditions in winter, and now it is a little bit crooked. thank you for your answer.
Holy smokes that looked easy! Have an '01 NB and getting some whistling when on the freeway due to the sunroof seal shrinking. Have you replaced the seal before? If so, do you have a video on that? I hear it's a PITA
Hi could you possibly give me some guidance, I own a 1996 VW golf mk3 Golf hatchback, is the procedure the same for removing the sunroof glass? I have tried to find info out there and all forums are giving mixed views regarding the MK3 models such as removing the interior headlining which seems a job too complex. Please could you advise, great videos mate, greeting from the UK.
Hey Humble Mac I loved this video but not sure it applies to me. My 2003 Jetta wagon has a sunroof issue. It wont open and it wont close all the way. It starts to open and or close but like its a wall and pops back. Today i tried to manually close it using the allen wrench provided and it closed all the way on one side. Which made me think there is something foreign or broken stopping it from opening/closing. Because i cant get it to open, even manually, i cannot see what might be in there. So, any thoughts?
Would this basically be the same process for a 2012 FORD Escape? I have to go to a salvage yard and take out the sunroof glass from a wreck - then have it installed in my Escape (Rock smashed it on the highway)
Changed the clips on shade but now glass roof does not go back to open sunroof, it will tilt up. Do you think it just need lub or part of broken clip is in there? How to get it out without removing headliner?? Thanks
The sliding door on the sun roof is getting caught on something I need help to fix it or to get it one stuck some kind of bracket on the passenger side.
Hey @HumbleMechanic! How do you remove the Interior Slide Cover for the Sunroof Glass? My 06's fabric liner just dropped off of it, and id like to replace it. Any suggestions or how to's to get this piece out?
you can also do it by not removing the glass. When the headliner is removed, take the white plastic clips at the end of the track (towards the back) slide the sunroof cover back until 1 of the sets of glides is off. Then simply push 1 side forward while the other side is toward the back and the second set of glides will come out of the track! easier than removing the glass.
HumbleMechanic Yes the panoramic roof which you can open. It is a really common problem with them. They start to rattle because of some loose springs or some plastic falling inside and bouncing around.
My A4 sunroof open sum time and sum time don’t. And when I try to lift the sunroof always it should be lift up with just one push but know I have to press the switch until it’s lift up all the way. Even after lifting up all the way when released the switch it just down by it self. Do you know why is that happening? Is that cause switch?
Hey charles, I know this is an older video but... Do you happen to have instructions on how to get the sunroon slider/shade out? Let me know thank you MK5 GTI
Reinstalling the glass is the same procedure? I can’t seem to get my sunroof flush with the roof. Looks like there’s gaps between the weatherstripping around the sunroof and the roof of the car. When looking at the sunroof from above
I have the same problem. Loosening the screws and manually shifting the sunroof put it into the correct spot (and tightening back), but upon fully retracting the sunroof and then closing it, I discovered that it's the actual bracket that's shifting, so I need to replace the whole shebang.
Does anyone know how to remove the little rails the glass is mounted to? Mine snapped on both sides and now my sunroof doesn't close all the way and I need new ones. :(
Can I remove the entire track assembly, leave the sunroof in, & still use the switch to open the sunroof only to full vent position ? I just removed my old dried out water damaged headliner that was making noise & now that I've done that job it's revealed the sunroof track is making a similar noise. Any help greatly appreciated.
Anyone know how to get the sunroof to close forward? It almost closes then stops and reopens. From other forums it sounds like a pinch condition. I can't put it in tilt because it stays completely open. manual method doesn't seem to work, pulled the fuse put it back no good, Odbeleven found no codes. Any ideas are welcome. Was going to take it a part that's how I found this. Started watching Humble Mech and it was part of why I bought a VW. It is good stuff.
@@HumbleMechanic thanks we cleaned everything tried to close it again. Now it closes to the point where there is about a 1/8 to 1/16 of an inch opening in the back and it won't come up and won't go back wonder if now it derailed. Thought about removing the headliner to see what I see. But I read you have to remove the glass and since it won't tilt up? We are in Wyoming I would like to just get it to close until we get back home.
there seems to be an obstruction in my sunroof even with the manual tool i cannot get sunroof to close all the way is the an alternate way to remove sunroof?
HumbleMechanic there seems to be something obstructing the sunroof it will not let me vent itll only go forward and backwards will not close and will not vent is there another way to remove the sunroof so i can replace it?
wwhy leave out how do this if window wont go all the way out like that and if window keeps going back . i figured out how the get the window off ,its kinda hard (no help from this video ) track is still automatically going back . if possible make a video with all aspects of the issue . smh
Very well made video. Especially the ratio of how to provide useful information and not waste more time than necessary. Thanks! Good work.

I have a mk6 in which the shade slider's cloth came off and have to re glued it back. I had no idea where to begin with.
I know this is two years later, but glad to know this method works. Same exact thing happened to about a month ago.
This just happened to my mk5. How tf do I remove the sunroof, so I can remove the shade slider, so I can reglue fabric?? Right here!

Loving these salvage yard tips vids. These and the WhiteWookie vids are my fav.
+Chris Deiter right on man. I'm editing a Wookie video now. :)
How do you get the sunshade out without touching the sunroof? :)
Glad I watched this! Gotta replace the leaking seal on my sunroof, and I would have pulled the headliner to remove the whole assembly... Derp!

Your videos are so informative. Thank you!
Perfect, just what I was looking for.
Took my Volkswagen dealer a week and a half to do that! Oh how I wish you were my mechanic!

Excellent, now I can find out where that rattle is comming from on my b7 a4
Great video but how do you get that thing with a fabric slider thing out cheers Graham
@humblemechanic thanks for posting! I also need to know how to put the glass back IN so it sits & seals right. Got any help there?
Use a sharpie or marker to mark the placement of the sunroof glass before you loosen any bolts
awesome! just what I needed! hope to use you again!
Nice, Thanks Charles, really helpful video.
Leave it to the Germans to give you a manual tool. Great tutorial. Thanks Charles and Eric.
Right on!
Your video saved us many hours of wasted time. Grateful for it!!!
SWEET

😊 Did you ever install that new seal in sunroof?
Well done, that was very clear. Thanks
Nice!! I sent you a video on Facebook Messenger. Our sunroof is leaking so that isn't very nice. But it's leaking where the fuse box is.
Any video to fix up sunroof cable alignment?
Love the videos , what's some of the easiest cars to work on? I was looking at getting a 92 accord to tinker with .

I read "savage" instead of "salvage" and when I saw the tools on the paint at 0:14 it made sense :)
HAHAHA SAVAGE YARD
How about making an lightweight replacement for the glass... I want the venting but light aluminum...
Can you post a video how to remove and replace the sun shade? 2000 Jetta VR6 and my liner came off the sun shade...
I have a 2003 polo and wish to remove the cover around the sunroof to repair a crack in this cover everything else works fine

Awesome! Would you happen to know the part number for the seal? My car is a 2005 Passat, but I'm pretty sure they all used the same seal.
Most likely they did. I usually like to call the dealer to confirm there hasn’t been a revision

May you create a video on how to properly replace the Sunroof Glass Gasket - 2014-Volkswagen Passat TDI SEL Part# (8D0-877-297)?
Hey @HumbleMechanic! How do you remove the Interior Slide Cover for the Sunroof Glass? My 06's fabric liner just dropped off of it, and id like to replace it. Any suggestions or how to's to get this piece out?
Yep, Follow this video and remove the glass. Slide the shade forward, and you can take the phillips screws out of the clips the run in the track. EASY
HumbleMechanic Thank you so much! I have been dreading having to take the headliner out. any recommendations on how/what to replace the cloth with?

@@andygott8409 towards the back? Slide door won't go all the way back on mines. seems like there is something towards the front stopping it.
Loving the P-A-P tips Charles. Any chance we could get one on how to remove the entire headliner? Mine needs to be recovered. :)
+Gene Baker awesome!!! I think we are doing more this year. I'll be sure to add that to the list.
Can you make a video about where the annoying rattle comes from and how to fix it in VW and Audi sunroofs?

Very similar

On my MK4, the sunroof operates slower than my friend's MK4, if I change the motor will it be faster? What causes it?
+McCheeseKid it's probably got some dirt or debris in the track. I'd try cleaning it out and lubricating the sunroof first.
GREAT JOB!!!! SNIFFS!!!
Hope you see this, but what if I need the sunroof shade as well?
After the glass is out, close the shade and unscrew the sliders. Lift the shade right out

Not totally clear on what you want to do. But the roof attaches to the track assembly, So you have to leave it in if you want the glass in.
Ok Thank You
