  • In the modern world, the ancient Taoist concept of Wu Wei offers a refreshing alternative to the unending hustle. Wu Wei, or "effortless action," encourages harmonious living by allowing things to unfold naturally, without unnecessary force or struggle.

Love that you included Bruce Lee! 😎 If people walked away from social media (ahem, Tik Tok , IG and Twitter) and the fake and toxic world it portrays, they would be so much happier and at peace. Yes, we all need jobs and have bills etc but life is what you make it. Stop being a follower and break out into real life. Being present is so true.

This sounds very attractive and I would truly love to detach from all my possessions and relationships, to go live as a monk on a distant mountain. But how does this work when you are raising a family, making a marriage work, paying a mortgage? How do you integrate these principles, or are they incompatible? I barely have an hour a day to myself.

    • @enders8412
      @enders8412 Год назад +4

i think in this context it's not about finding "free" time. It's about balancing between action and in-action, being with the flow like water. For example, you have a task that you should have finished at job, don't pull an all-nighter to finish it (unless you have a deadline for tomorrow), the moment you feel you have worked on this task too much (let's say until 7pm), just go home and relax. There is another day, you can continue tomorrow. Same as marriage, the moment you feel you are always doing stuff that your SO wants to do, change it, just say sorry I can't do it I just want to read a book tonight. Basically, it's about finding out when these resistances occur and trying to find a workaround until it makes you feel that you have the right balance between action and inaction. Only in rare cases this is not possible (e.g. you're a slave, or like have an exam tomorrow). I hope this comment was helpful to you :))

I think one does not need to become a hermit and renounce all possessions and relationships to live a spiritually fulfilling life. Monks are not the only ones eligible for enlightenment, nor do all monks become enlightened. The Buddha Himself attempted a life of harsh ascetism, denying His basic bodily needs, but eventually saw that this was no way to become spiritually fulfilled.
The concept of wuwei (無為) I think is very powerful. From what I understand after watching the video, the central message is to not oppose the forces of nature (i.e., life's tasks like work, family, or marriage) around us but to bend and move with them. I recall a saying by Confucius: "When the wind blows, bend like grass." When life throws challenges at us, we should adopt a soft stance, and bend, for even the strongest winds cannot uproot grass. We must resist the temptation to become rigid (perhaps our of fear), for we will definitely snap and be blown away. We must be brave, and bend.
      This is my interpretation.

This may seem non-sequitur but I think the dictionary is a very misleading book. it tries too hard to concretize many things that can't be. Notions such as control and free will fall way short of reality. I love language but it's an art form and should just be seen as a form of play. Are we really in "control" of anything?

  • @Tvrz

So the belief in cause, by some action or series of actions is once again shown to be a fantasy... and the fierce belief in their "actions" seems to be getting more immovable, and at the same time the denial of responsibility for the actions they have taken... a real hypocritical circle jerk, with no correction intended. Good job there "leaders" your results speak louder than your words.

In a way, God is like "0" (zero) that split itself into both a -1 (minus one) and +1 (plus one) creating the illusionary duality (which sometimes can be painful) in our earthly life, in order to experience it through us. In the same way, light needs darkness, life needs death, sound needs silence, but the reality and the truth is that they are still a oneness. We need to recognize and realize that. Being part of God, we truly are the "0" (zero), but our mind/ego/earthly self makes us believe to live in a world of +1 and -1, until we awake and recognize our Higher Self that is One with God...

Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu - chapter 42
      The Tao begot one.
      One begot two.
      Two begot three.
And three begot the ten thousand things.
The ten thousand things carry yin and embrace yang.
They achieve harmony by combining these forces.
Men hate to be "orphaned," "widowed," or "worthless,"
But this is how kings and lords describe themselves.
      For one gains by losing
      And loses by gaining.
What others teach, I also teach; that is:
"A violent man will die a violent death!"
This will be the essence of my teaching.

Observing the animal kingdom helps me to better understand wu wei. When prey evades predator, it is acting spontaneously in accordance with its natural instincts. If prey did not evade predator (or if predator stopped pursuing prey), the natural world would become unbalanced. Neither predator nor prey is forcing a conscious agenda. Breathing is also a survival instinct. These spontaneous actions are integral components of nature's balance.

    DAO DEJING (TAO TE CHING)
    Chap/ Verse 9
If you make your blade too keen, it will not hold its edge. When gold and jade fill the hall, none can hold on to them. To be haughty when wealth and honor come your way, is to bring disaster upon yourself. To withdraw when the work is done, is the Way of Heaven.
Chap/ Verse 29 (Forcing events to happen. Trying to control. All gets done)
Those who would gain the world, and do something with it, I see that they will fail. For the world is a spiritual vessel, and one cannot put it to use. Those who use it, ruin it. Those who grab hold of it, lose it.
And so, Sometimes, things lead, and sometimes they follow. Sometimes they breathe gently, and sometimes they pant. Sometimes they are strong, and sometimes they are weak. Sometimes they fight, and sometimes they fall. That is why the sages cast off whatever is extreme, extravagant or excessive.
“Nature does not hurry. Yet everything is accomplished”. -Lao Tzu
    Chap/ Verse 44 (Humility Contentment)
Your name or your body, which do you hold more dear? Your body or your property, which is of greater value? Gain or loss, which is the greater calamity? For this reason, deep affections give rise to great expenditures. Excessive hoarding results in great loss. Know contentment, and avoid disgrace. Know when to stop, and avoid danger. And you will long endure.
    Chap/Verse 48
In the pursuit of learning, one does more each day. In the pursuit of the Way, one does less each day. One does less and less until one does nothing. Gaining the world always is accomplished by following no activity. As soon as one actively tries, one will fall short of gaining the world.
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference.” Robert Frost
