Why are Nissans and Infinitis so crappy for you guys in the US? I never hear these silly issues about Nissan where I live or even anywhere outside US really. Also we have these Armadas, except they're badged as the Patrol here.
Hey car wizard, I run my own performance shop and I specialize in Nissan trucks, I am very familiar with these rigs, Nissan used the same frame for all of the trucks and suv's (they call it the F-alpha platform) which means these things are like lego's everything interchanges. We take the motors from the Titans, armada's, qx56's (vk56de engine) and swap them into the Nissan xterra/frontiers/pathfinders which are 2000lbs lighter in weight. It makes for a really fun rig. Both cars use the same transmission just different bell housings, the exact same transfer case, There is no modifying anything everything just drops in and bolts up because Nissan used the same frame for everything.People also swap suspension parts between the two for longer travel and a wider stance. Currently I am building a supercharged vk56de for my personal xterra with a goal of 500hp. I would HIGHLY recommend an Uprev flash tune for that rig it will actually net you better fuel economy and better performance. It does a lot to help with the drive by wire system and removes factory restrictions like only 80% throttle comand is allowed in 1st gear from the factory. Uprev can remove that. It really improves the car and will cost about $700-800 for a custom tune file made for your truck. Also Trans-go makes a shift kit for that transmission that will really wake it up as well, Also I usually convert to Audi R8 coilpacks as well on all of them.
I have often dreamed of doing exactly what you do. Being in Nissan/ infinity enthusiast I always wanted to see if I could drop the VQ 56DEN to a G 37 chassis. Essentially making the infinity his version of an I SF so to speak. Also wondering if the VQ 50 might stuff in one as well. That VQ 50 that they put in the FX 50 was a beast of an engine and I don’t know why they did not you lies it more or make a performance addition of the Pathfinder or frontier. I’d love your website or information just to check out your projects man. Bmxguy08
@@HellBaron-rb4vu you're right. We really like them here. The Armadas are badged as Patrols for us. 😂 I still don't know how are Nissans unreliable in US. Like how? Even the supposed cvt issues are not there for us in the Altimas (we have them as taxis btw). Also Nissan has a special Nismo version of the Patrol. Yes a Nismo Patrol with a slightly different 5.6L V8, VK56VD (has DFi), making about 428 hp.
@@aaryeshg.6526 because toyota, nissan and huyndai make quite the different spec for their cars there, they are nicknamed ''khaliji spec'' which includes alot of changes, some minor and some major, stuff like: different paint jobs, totally different engine cooling, different fuel pumps, etc. And that applies to all of the cars from the lowest speced corolla to the highest end lexus, from the cheapest elentra or accent to the most expensive genesis, etc. Even nissan still manufactures the y61 patrol in the u.a.e to this day. And for the people who don't know this it's not that that region get's outright better cars, it's that the climate is so hostile, their normal production cars literally won't work there, and that is evident in the used market prices to said cars.
The QX56 always looks mildly concerned, like someone made a joke about their mental health and the QX56 was like, "You good, bro? Like, no joke, you okay?"
This to me is one of the ugliest cars ever made, I'm talking PT Cruiser/Multipla/Aztek levels, it has the same type of "headlight below hood line" aesthetic, and from the side it looks like two different cars cut in the middle and welded together. As someone from an EU country I was amazed how it looked even uglier in person, it's also gigantic blob and looks even more ridiculous among European cars and on our small roads. It looks like a Hummer for old people.
Five points: 1) you're missing the front skid plate that actually goes from the front bumper lip to the engine. It has to be removed to get at the oil filter, so somebody probably forgot to put it back on. 2) the oil cooler leak is so incredibly easy to fix. Next time you change your oil, after you pull the oil filter it takes a socket to remove the central nut off the same shaft the oil filter screws onto. No need to disconnect any coolant lines, the pancake cooler pulls straight off. The seal is the EXACT same size as the OEM oil filter o-ring, so in a pinch you can simply remove one from a cheap oil filter and it'll cost less than the OEM seal and work just the same. That seal gets a lot of heat from the engine and hardens as it ages. It's probably good practice to go ahead and replace it every few years. I did mine in 2018, after owning and driving it for almost six years it started to seep a little. 3) the air ride suspension is important for towing heavy trailers, also there is a trailer brake control unit for this, should be included, most people leave them in the glovebox and never install them. After 8 years of owning my Armada the air ride suspension has been perfectly trouble free. 4) I think there might have been a recall on the early year fuel sending units. 5) the only two flaws I've had is a broken vent on the passenger side of the dash, and an occasional annoying false signal on the sonar parking sensors. In other words, no big deal. Keep up on all the fluid changes and scheduled maintenance and it is a very reliable platform. Other than needing a new starter, my brother has had the same experience with his 2008 Armada.
@@hamstirrer6882 The "multiple cars needed in quick succession" virus. I have one car. I drive it since 2016. When I buy another car, I get rid of the one I've got now. But to each their own - my comment was not meant in a judgemental way, more like a joke. Which you may not have gotten, I'm sorry.
A few hundred bucks and it'll be perfect. Surprised the dealer didnt do some of the smaller fixes and clean it up some. I have a Murano which also had a bad clockspring, $125 for the OE part on ebay and an hour to change it. Fuel sender sensor tracks get gummed up, just clean them with contact cleaner every few years, or $60 a side for new ones. Sway bar bushings are like $10.
I have a 2008 qx56 in this exact color. Currently has 230000 miles. Was towing my travel trailer across country and lost the transmission. Changed transmission and kept towing. I LOVE this truck! I have a new Gls450. The qx56 is still my favorite.
I love mine. It’s a 4x4 and it’s been a great work truck. Has over 212k+ miles at this point. Heated rear seats like the newest expensive trucks. And all the back windows open even the quarter windows. If you pull out the cup holder in the rear console there is a hidden handle release to remove the console w/O tools.
I have a 2003 Infiniti i35... LOVE it, there are issues popping up all over the place, but they aren't that expensive to fix! Even the SUNROOF still works and the drains aren't clogged!
the nissan/infiniti avoidance always seems to baffle me, so many people go out of their way to say how unreliable they are without having actually owned one that hasn't been abused that I just don't get it.
@@sakaraist I actually did that with my SL2 Saturn .. someone told me that they were cheep and crappy gm cars and I thought they looked nice and I looked them up and apparently they were supposed to be against Toyotas corolla's and Hondas civics in the '90s.. and since it was cheaper than both I decided to buy it and I loved it ever since
I'm looking forward to watching you maintain this truck. I have a first gen QX56 as well (a 2010), and while it was never a vehicle I had really considered buying, I'm really liking it the longer I own it. It is fairly easy to work on ( I do 90% of the work on it myself), can carry a ridiculous amount of gear, it tows like a champ, and it is amazing for cross country road trips (aside from emptying your bank account from gas fill-ups). Just make sure to bypass the transmission cooler in the radiator or you are guaranteed to kill the transmission.
We own a 2018 3.6 Camaro Wizard. Bought it new. 20,000 miles now. We love it. Fast car and sounds great. Hope we don’t have trouble with timing chains for long time.
My '06 Armada, owned since '07, has been super reliable. The only major issue I've had with is that I've got an ABS sensor going out, I think, which is confusing the ABS controller. Regarding your fuel sender issue, there was a recall on that back in '09, I believe, so it seems likely that could be the issue. Mine is also relegated to being used for hauling trailers, dogs and goats, for the most part. 150k mi and still going strong with only basic maintenance needed over the years.
Speaking about towing, Car Wizard, didn't you have a Dodge Ram truck for that? Oh, and I also remember seeing a video about a really awesome old 80s GMC tow truck with a diesel engine in it - where is that beast? I would have liked to see it in action, doing its job what it was meant to do... (Or getting fixed so that it can do its job again)
That SUV look like if it had an front accident before. The different exterior color, the airbag an the white marker identification on plastic parts in the engine bay gave me that impression.
The Nismo Patrol (yes a Nismo version of the Armada/Patrol, same truck) is even more insane than these. 🤣 We have them in the middle east. Idk why it even exists but is still cool nonetheless.
I’ve never understood the hate against Infiniti. I have a 9 year old (2012) Infiniti M37 with 124k miles that has ZERO issues. I never done anything other than routine maintenance. It’s still in showroom condition. Yes Nissans has issues especially with CVTs but Infinitis usually has proper transmissions and higher build quality.
I bought an '07 Armada new in Jan 2007. Put over 200,000 miles on it with very little maintenance cost. My daughter bought a used 2014 Murano. Been great. Bought a POS 2000 Altima stick shift. It was literally $400 and headed to the junk yard. Been super reliable. Every brand has their achilles heel. My brand new Honda Accord was a POS. 1990 Taurus SHO was a POS. So it all depends. Maintenance plays a big part.
@@billbosch9127 Prior to 1995 they were VERY good cars. Even the early E320 models were good and cheap cars. If you never owned one, you wouldn't know.
Had one of these growing up, parents still drive it daily. And we still use it to tow stuff all the time. It has almost 170k and has been 100% reliable. No serious issues, just regular maintenance.
Nice find! If you ever run into the cracked manifold issue, just slap some JBA long tubes and catted downpipes plus a tune on it and you'll be good to go for a long time. No more manifold, no more cracking issues!
We loved our 07' Armada. In the end it was a check engine light due to an inter evap leak, an airbag light, a air ride fail, the driver seat stuck and an engine tick that did it in. I have a BMW X5 50i now but that land yacht was fantastic for young kids, towing stuff, lowering all seats and stuffing it to the brim from the stores. We miss it dearly but all the problems you mentioned made it dumb to fix and better to trade it in for something newer for the wife
These are the same reasons I bought my '02 Sequoia 3 years ago. Even with 315k miles on it, the interior, exterior and frame are just as good as Wizard's beast.
Great info. I realize the Infiniti is very similar to Nissan. However it would be interesting to see a "Buy this not that" Infiniti video. I am curious about the Infiniti SUV that is smaller than this one, QX50.
Had one of these to about 150k, very few problems. Sold it because I started to get nervous about big repairs (especially cats/manifolds), got an Expedition that has been way more problematic. My air suspension still worked, helped make it a great tow vehicle.
@@machtschnell7452 only if they’re good ones. On TSI engines before around 2012, VW cheaped out and chose poor quality timing chains which would stretch prematurely, apparently because the factory that made them used worn out dies. This was a big issue on the early 1.2TSI especially, because the tensioner was hydraulic and the oil pressure could drop when not used for a while, potentially causing the stretched chain to be not tensioned properly allowing it to jump.
i had the 2006 and the Manifolds broke on both sides ! Then I bought the Pathfinder and the Trans had a loose bolt in the trans!! NO MORE NISSANS EVER FOR ME! The last good year was the 91!
I own a 2004 Expedition with the 3v 5.4 V8. Runs and drives perfect with 228k+ miles and will probably go to 250k no problem. Haven't had to do any major work on it, just change the oil every 4k miles.
Worked on Toyotas for almost 25 years. Except for a short stint at a Honda Nissan dealership. Learned to love Hondas, Nissan....Dear Lord....never again. From 2005 to 2009 I lived the miserable life of a Nissan tech. After dealing with Nissan trucks, and Nissan schools, and factory reps....I was done. To this day, I always say, I will PUSH my Tacoma, (before my Taco I owned a 2000 Tundra but the Taco is a TRD Off Road with the rear diff lock and A-Trac a beast off road) with only 3 wheels on it, stuck up to the hubs in mud before I would EVER own a Nissan truck. Wizard....my friend....good luck.
18.9 MPG isn't bad, Wizard. My 2016 F150 gets 16-17 in town and 20-22 on the highway depends on time of year and traffic. If you spec your F150 correctly it is rated to tow 12,200+ depends on year.
YEAH YACHT VIDEO! I love your videos, keep them comming. I think you being a bit out of your element in the boat series makes it very entertaining and inspiring an impulse to venture outside of the comfort zone of known experiences. 500k subs soon!
That staining on the a-pillar cloth is from water. Add in the mismatched cowl, and this was likely a wreck rebuild at least in the windsheild area. Either it was a broken/removed windsheild, or a replacement that wasn't sealed properly when initially replaced.
You know, my parents bought an armada new in 2005. They still drive it to this day with over 180,000 miles. It had major abs electrical issues in the first year but Nissan resolved these issues and this truck has been great! Leaks a little oil, but my Dad loves this thing and will drive it into the ground. (Never changed the catalytic converters as well)
I’ve had three Armadas with and without the self leveling rear suspension and they all rode pretty good. My current Armada is a ‘06 and rides great. The shocks were replaced once. The newest Armada I had was a 2011 and was awesome as well. Also, they have a lot of power and torque. I can easily do a burn out and do donuts. The reliability has been great on all my Armadas. Just standard maintenance required for the most part!
I have the same car! Mine has 143,000 miles as of today, just clicked over! But, I noticed the gearbox tends to be weak on these and the electricals concerning the handbrake sometimes are wonky...but congratulations on the new car!
I think the thing is - which you made clear - a lot of vehicles become realistic purchases if you're able to buy the parts and do the work yourself, but if you're reliant on a shop they're just a really bad idea. I could write you a list of awesome 1980s and 90s Japanese and American sports cars that I'd love to own, and probably would own, if I had the space, skills, and motivation to work on them, but if I bought them now would just be money pits and an endless source of stress. This is one of those occasional situations in life where "do as I say, not as I do" is a defensible and non-hypocritical position to take. Top video!
For real on the Nissan seats being comfy. I wish more car manufacturers did whatever they do for seats. I've had many an Altima as rental cars before and I always loved how comfy their seats are.
I bought a seriously neglected 06 with almost 200k miles on it. Was very impressed by how much still worked and the ridiculous amount of standard features for the year. Don't think about replacing those fogged up headlights though, they're $600 plus each. Maybe I'm in the minority but I love how these vehicles look.
I appreciate the detail inspection and honesty! Yes, its usually a fuel tank sending unit that resolves the SES light. Also, what brand flashlight model did you used in the video-it was bright-I'm looking for another one-I didn't see it in your amazon stuff. Thanks.
Never get your wife a car with a heated steering wheel, she'll never want to drive anything else ever again. 2 years ago got my wife a 2005 Cayenne Turbo and she fell in love with the heated steering wheel, last year bought her a 2015 Cayenne S v6 twin turbo...but it was a California car, no heated steering wheel! And that's all I heard about for the first 4 weeks 😭... after over 20 hours of research and 14 hours drive time and car rental to get it for her!

Bmxguy08
Well where are you?, because you can probably make even more money if you move to the u.a.e. alot of them in that entire reigon.

@@Kluneberg Exactly, the Armada is built essentially the same and it looks way better cause of the headlight placement.

I own a 2008 Infiniti M45 Sport and for its time was very advanced and is still very reliable. These were good times for Infiniti!
Hoovie is really rubbing off on you. :-O
That's what I was gonna say!
Reggie Reginato I had the same thought. Haha
I have a 2003 Infiniti i35... LOVE it, there are issues popping up all over the place, but they aren't that expensive to fix! Even the SUNROOF still works and the drains aren't clogged!
How many miles on yours???
Sounds like market manipulation... "don't buy this car".... proceeds to go buy that car
the nissan/infiniti avoidance always seems to baffle me, so many people go out of their way to say how unreliable they are without having actually owned one that hasn't been abused that I just don't get it.

So little rust for being in the Northeast, such a great find
No chance that thing was in the salt belt for any length of time. It would be a lot worse than it is.

19:14 uhhhh, practically EVERYTHING that currently sits in my driveway are vehicles that are on your “do not buy” list.
Yes I wonder about that gmc too
That Ram couldn't tow 9,000 lbs. I too have wondered about the GMC Brigadier and if he still has it.
Maaan this guy is just smart. And someone that loves what he does. And is a wizard at it.
The front fog lights are from the discontinued QX4.
That SUV look like if it had an front accident before. The different exterior color, the airbag an the white marker identification on plastic parts in the engine bay gave me that impression.
It is soon comforting to see the "Dynamic Duo" in action again.👍🏽
We have a 2016 QX80. Absolutely love the car. Big, heavy and SAFE. Rides down the road like a dream. 400hp is crazy, but it's fun.
The Nismo Patrol (yes a Nismo version of the Armada/Patrol, same truck) is even more insane than these. 🤣
We have them in the middle east.

Mr.Weezard, has been on a shopping spree! Love it
I bought an '07 Armada new in Jan 2007.

@@nathanlewis5682 The wrap is a good idea, but melting boots on a 5.6 isn't a worry since it's coil on plug in the heads.

Timing chains >>> Timing belts.
@@machtschnell7452 agreed
@@machtschnell7452 only if they’re good ones. On TSI engines before around 2012, VW cheaped out and chose poor quality timing chains which would stretch prematurely, apparently because the factory that made them used worn out dies.
This was a big issue on the early 1.2TSI especially, because the tensioner was hydraulic and the oil pressure could drop when not used for a while, potentially causing the stretched chain to be not tensioned properly allowing it to jump.

18.9 MPG isn't bad, Wizard. My 2016 F150 gets 16-17 in town and 20-22 on the highway depends on time of year and traffic. If you spec your F150 correctly it is rated to tow 12,200+ depends on year.

Hey I used to work at an auction, those stains may be water damage/water stains on the front pillars inside.
Top video!
