I don't think the refs are personally, but friends and family might be and are in their ear, officiating across ALL sports have been getting progressively worse with the rise of sports betting, and I don't even gamble but it's clearly way more picking and choosing on when to blow the whistle or not, way too much inconsistency across the board

Force refs to regular (every few months) educational coursea with re-examinations, reviewing and examining bad calls from the last few months. Step 3. Hire external independent evaluators for referees.

Easy fixes: 1. Win challenge = keep challenge 2. Can challenge at any time (e.g. even if there is a no-call). If lose challenge, 1 tech FT + possession to the opposition 3. Give 2 challenges each half, reset at halftime 4. Make challenge process much quicker
And add on top of that referee zoning. Give each ref a zone for calls that make, which is probably already in place, and upon reviewal of games with controversial call(s), if you missed a call or got a call blatantly wrong in your zone, you get a point. Once you get 5 points, you’re suspended for a week. Add that or something like it on top of your suggestions and I’d agree, easy fix
There’s nothing to challenge if there’s no call. Also there’s no stoppage. If the other team goes on a fast break or starts their possession, the opposing coach can’t start a challenge at that time.

Before the challenge, the last 2 minutes of a game was under a microscope but the draw back that ppl had for it was it made the game screech to halt in pace. A game with the challenge rule in the last 2 minutes could feel like it takes about 5 minutes to get to the end of the game, but pre challenge rule it could feel like 10 minutes which can definitely upset fans for a games last 2 minutes to go. Since the plays of a game can’t be reviewed in the last minutes it has led to more mistakes on the refs and while I like the challenge system that has been a weakness it has
