Most NBA players go for STATS in the modern days. They care about the title being selected as an All Star or starter in their career statistic. They care no more how the All Star game has been played. Because modern day players understand people/Google will remember their STATS but not the actual game play especially after retirement.

I miss Kobe in these situations. I think Jalen Rose said that in a NBA charity game where everyone was just chilling in the locker room. Kobe walk in and said " I don't know why y'all mfer are laughing, I'm about to bust all ya mfering @ss." He set the tone and it got competitive.
In a exhibition game in China, were he was the only NBA player. After not scoring at all in the 1st half. Kobe flip the switch in the 2nd half. He didn't want to disappoint the fans there, and took the second half as a personal challenge to see how much he can score in 15 minutes. Kobe drop 68pts.
I wanted to watch it, only if they w were defending. For 3hrs I ended up watching highlights of Spencer dinwiddie and Gabe Vincent to see how they can positively affect my lakers.
I tuned in 2x for 3mins to see how competitive it was then went back to watching highlights of my lakers. That's how boring it was. I miss the days of kobe, tmac and even mj in 2003 Allstars.

Kobe, Jordan, Magic & Bird they were a different breed... Today's players are soft, I firmly believe the 4 I just mentioned played in today's league with their competitive mindsets... They would average 50+ ppg or more, because they wouldn't just stand back & shoot 3's they would attack the basket & dare their opponents to actually play defense!

- 3pt contest can stay
- Horse tournament
- 1v1 tournament, a lot of players. Like maybe sweet 16 amount of players.
-2v2 tournament with elite eight amount of teams
- 3v3 tournament final four starting amount of players
- Rising Stars All-Star Game
- all-star game separately reserved for players that are NOT signed to max money deals, that has a prize pool of money

I think the obvious answer is to change the date of the app star weekend to an off season timeline. Players will be named part to the all star game just before the playoffs. And it becomes a required charity event to be considered for ANY max contract signings. Then after the season ends, during summer training the all star weekend occurs.
In a world where these men cry like children if they aren't selected as an All-Star then to have them not compete in the game is idiotic. Basically, disrespectful to their fans.
The problem is the ones who are passionate about the all star game dont get selected. Just the players who expect to get chosen are the ones who dont compete.
Maybe only stars who are willing to compete should be selected to be put on the voting ballot. Everyone else can miss out on an allstar selection on their resume and stay home.

An idea that could work is that you got 4 starting 5's each as their own team with a king of the court style pickup game, where the team with the most wins either gets money for charity or prize money for themselves. I feel that could up the level of competition a bit. Everyone when they play pickup wants to stay king of the court for reasons of pride.
Replace the All-Star Game with an All-Star tournament. The starters from each conference form two teams, then you get five players from each division to make six more teams, and you play single elim, game 30. This allows for more players to be highlighted and increase the competitive fervor.
You also make it mandatory for the other events during the weekend to be filled ONLY with players who made an all-star/rising star team.
Another problem is they’re all best friends and don’t want to embarrass each other. It’s ridiculously ridiculous

I think even what Stephen A. said about it like "at least compete, ofc not on the level of a regular season game" is part of the problem. Where do you draw the line? Either you compete to win or you don't. If you don't, this is the result. There is no in-between. When players have this "I shouldn't go too hard" in the back of their heads, it's done. It's also this "I don't wanna seem like I care, so when I fail, they can't hang it over my head", I think. Cos not knowing keeps the debate going about who is better, who is worse, and if they're worth the money they're getting paid for. If you're all on the same stage and going all in, favourites are going to eventually show. Bad for business?
The 80s, 90s and 00s all stars were way more competitive than what we've witnessed in the past 8 - 10 years.

The Dunk contest started to crumble when Aaron Gordon lost twice!! He won both there is no debate when he jumped over the mascot in the SEATED Position while simultaneously transferring the ball underneath and dunking. Then the 2nd he jumped over Tacko Fall who's nearly 8 feet tall!!

My suggestion to fix all star weekend. all star game. top 2 offensive players and top 3 defensive players from east and west are starters. media and coaches vote on reserves. 3 point comp, top 6 to 8 players with best percentage for the season are in. Dunk Comp, 1 player from each team, 30 participants tournament style, 1v1 dunk 1 dunk each, then when they get to final 8 players, 4 players in each pool, they get 2 or 3 dunks, best average score moves on. longer format but it would be more exciting.
Before watching this I thought the same as Shannon. I genuinely believe if the players could vote to get all star selections but not play the game they absolutely would. It used to be a competitive motivation to have the best players going against each other to prove who was best, now it's just a big lazy pickup game where everyone just shoots uncontested 3s for 48 mins.

Shannon is absolutely right on the last point. Players bragging about being an All-Star but don't want to actually participate. That's the downside of having too much power and money, they couldn't care less about the fans wanting to see an actual game featuring the best players.

Dunk contest is old news, back in the 80’s 90’s, the dunk was more revered, more admired. Nowadays, the mystique of the dunk is gone.

Absolute facts. The last best NBA All-Star game was 2020 just after Kobe's passing when they dedicated with the 24 points system in the 4th quarter. They were actually playing defense and was defo more competitive.

You never wanted to be associated with record setting DEFENSIVE performances, all-star or otherwise. It reminds me of the entitled athlete talking in the back of the class while you're legitimately trying to learn.
Add a couple of instigators to the game like DB or Pat Bev and it instantly gets more competitive. Even a pickup game between friends in the backyard at this point is more competitive than the all star game.

That's exactly what I thought. You literally have the power to set the tone. It's not out of your control; you have the ability to play harder. What's really happening is that the top guys are setting the tone by playing soft, conservative, and weak in order to conserve energy, and now everyone else is following suit. All it takes is one guy to play hard, but no one is willing to do so.

After every all star game, there should be a grading/voting system on the performance of each all star (based on effort) and will either be deducted or added to their rating on the next all star selection.

I agree. I’m born in 1992 and the early 2000’s the all star games were way more competitive and entertaining. Now days there’s literally zero defense on both sides of the court.

This entire segment spoke to my heart. When I grew up, the superstars who played in the All Star game had so much pride to compete in the game. Along with that, the dunk contest was far more entertaining to watch because there was a tenacity for more creativity. Nowadays I rarely watch it since many of the dunks are similar to what I have already seen.
It’s because Aaron Gordon got robbed. He should’ve won at least one. The NBA turned the all star weekend into a joke, not the players.
I think for the dunk contest it’s just we’ve seen so many dunks it’s not too much you can do differently.

I don't know if the game itself is fixable. Sure, you have guys that will compete against each other in summer runs and pro-ams, but I don't know how you can translate that into a nationally televised all-star game.
However, I think the weekend can be improved in a lot of ways. The weekend should be a celebration for fans and give them access to everyone. I know it'd be a logistical nightmare, but I think it would be great for all 30 teams to be there for the weekend - holding players and coaches clinics, open practices, make-a-wish outreach, etc.
Have everyone attend the skills comp and the ASG. Basically, turn it into a pep rally for the league.
