The finest of them all. An icon amongst legends. Biggest audience. Absolutely hilarious and bonkers. Treated badly by the BBC for no reason just because they wanted to tick a box, that hurt him, you could tell. From that point I switched off from any BBC Radio.
RIP Steve and thank you for the decades of fun.

In 2022, I underwent open heart surgery, a chapter in my life that was just plain terrifying. During one of my many visits to the hospital for scans and tests prior to the surgery, I entered an MRI tunnel with apprehension. MRI scans are not enjoyable in the slightest. So, when the nurses fitted me up with a pair of headphones, I was absolutely delighted to hear the opening theme tune to Steve Wright’s afternoon show. It was the distraction I really needed at that moment, because Steve’s show was a hugely positive experience every time I listened, and was since my early teens. RIP Wrighty, you were amazing.

He was the most amazing broadcaster we’ve ever had the honour of tuning into, his sense of humour was incredible, as well as his music, he had a sincerity about him and his voice had a continuity of reassurance and familiarity, RIP Steve and thanks for everything xxx

I love Steve, but his afternoon show had become a little self-indulgent....ie: only playing playlist songs for 90 seconds & a full length of it was a favourite. Still was busy at the weekend with shows. Also was on at least 400k a year, so not treated terribly.

    • @stephenguppy7882
      @stephenguppy7882 4 месяца назад

@@senorpasso8670 On reflection, and now the initial shock of his passing has subsided, I feel I must agree with you about the show. Perhaps the BBC should have moved him a decade ago to a different slot and created a new format, but who knows? Yes, he was well paid, but he was treated shabbily in the 90s by Radio 1, who wanted him out and put him on at breakfast, where the show didn't work. I thought he was good when he took his posse to the
original Talk Radio in the 90s. They could mess about to their hearts' content and not have to worry about chopping off records partway through. I still think the end of his afternoon show on Radio 2 could have been handled a little more sensitively. It was an age-related thing, which in itself is discriminatory. Can you imagine the uproar had he been black or gay or disabled? The BBC and its dwindling listeners will still be that much poorer-served thanks to Steve's passing. I worked in community radio for nearly six years and even there, the politics involved was dreadful, so goodness only knows what it was like at the BBC. I quit when I felt the wind of change blowing through broadcasting. Yes, even at my modest level I was still subject to OfCom rules and it got to the stage where you could hardly say anything or express an opinion without someone complaining. The fun went out of doing it so I quit. Sorry, rant over. RIP Steve Wright. ❤

No, respectfully disagree with you on that - the funniest and most creative DJ this country has ever produced was, The Late Great, "Kenny Everett" an absolute master of his craft!!
For me personally the Steve Wright show was never the same after he left radio One rather than be sacked by the arse h**e that was, and still is Matthew Bannister that prick who was responsible for clearing out all of the radio One DJs that millions of people listened to during the 70s and 80s the likes of DLT, Simon Bates, Adrian just, Bruno Brooks, Alan "fluff" Freeman, to name but a few.
When Steve Wright left Radio 1 he went to talk radio and a few commercial stations for a while before resurfacing at BBC Radio 2 but I always felt that his show on R2 was a watered down version of what he had previously done on Radio 1. All the good characters had gone there were no afternoon boys and girls the "posse" and lots of filler. He was undoubtedly an extremely accomplished broadcaster with a considerable longevity but definitely not the greatest broadcaster/ DJ this country has ever produced.

Incredibly sad news. Grew up listening to Steve on Radio 1 and more recent years on Radio 2.
Actually got a bit emotional when i heard the news.
    Very good compilation 👍

I’ve listened to Steve since he was on Radio 1, back in the early days & all the memories are flooding back. Who remembers…Gervaise the Hairdresser, Damion the Social Worker, The Thug, The Professor, Dave Doubledecks - The cliché DJ, Mick Jagger, The Newsagent - who had flatulence - when he did the breakfast show, on Radio 1 & - of course - Sid The Manager & Mr. Angry, plus the brilliant “Serious Jockin’ - No ‘G’, every Friday, from 4:15. He was a pure entertainer & had me in stitches, many times. I was also lucky enough to see him do an appearance at a local nightclub, many years ago. It was a horrendous night, snowing & freezing cold & loads of people had turned up, to see him. The DJ’s in the nightclub were psyching the crowd up & pretending to be on the phone, to Sid. They were saying - “It’s not Sheffield you’re coming to, it’s Doncaster. When he eventually turned up, the decorative railings around the stage crumbled like chalk, as the crowd surged forward, much to the despair, of the security guards. It was an amazing night, though & one I’ll never forget. Rest In Peace, Steve. You were a true legend & we’ll all miss you !!! 😭📻 🎙️🎧💿💽📀

I listened to him practically every day, right from his Radio 1 days and all the great characters and catchphrases. Mr Angry from Purley, Gervaise the hairdresser. Fillet of Fish, get the geese off. I remember the geese doing jingle bells one Xmas 😂 RIP you absolute legend 😢 x

Absolutely wonderful, brilliant, entertainer,so brilliant he was always with you, your own lives,of moods, bad times, good times, that distraction in the background" honestly yesterday was a bit ehh iffy day, as I'm now a disabled pensioner, and physically, mentally in a sense gettin older, getting on with things, and yesterday 5pm Sara Cox,Bobby prior show, broke me hey me,,it meant so much to me,me a listener, when i was carer (old mum) etc Steve wright was always there in background,my house etc, part of the wallpaper, and even now tears still flow at his unexpected passing, he didn't know me, nor I knew him,,but he was part of our generation lives, its hard to explain,, but when someone's so good, you fully notice" when that person left the party, just like Tony Blackburn, Johnny Walker,Ken Bruce etc but I feel Steve Wright had that, extra sparkle,, God bless and RIP Steve Wright, love peace and goodwill,to you and your family, friends, and Fans, RIP Steve Wright.🙋

@@bbc8891 ha I know they still around,I listen to them and others including new ?, but James.i personally feel it maybe morbid, but just life in it self, as you reach a certain age' people who you felt warm and comfortable with "leaving the party of our life's .and I think people who you knew were leaving at certain time , someone unexpectedly as to leave , and that person ,left a big gap of colder air, but left a warmth of lifes memories .

RIP Steve. These jingles were epic, they made us feel like we were part of something big - Great Britain! I overdosed on Steve in the early 2000’s but got back into him in the early 2020’s. His serious Jockin on Friday afternoons was epic too and his shaat aaats were always a big part of his show and made you feel as though you were part of something special. Well done Steve you'll always be missed and remembered fondly.

I’m so saddened to here of Steve’s passing all my working life from Radio 1 to Radio 2 Steve got me through some crap days at work, with the best radio slot ever on a afternoon, from Arnie and the terminators, the old woman, ask Elvis the list goes on, what an absolute legend and gentleman of a man sadly missed thinking of you and all your family at this terrible time, PS Radio 2 I haven’t listened to it since you sacked off the best, Greatest Hits where the rest of the best has gone, shame on you Radio 2

I've been searching for a BBC Radio 2 promo for Steve's afternoon show that I think was called "Steve sings all the hits". I only ever heard it once, and I was wondering if anyone has a copy of it. It basically featured snippets of Steve singing over a number of songs, as he used to do, and was very tongue in cheek, but so funny.
