- ERROR ALERT! I made a mistake about "pawls." They're actually the ratchet bits that prevent the capstan from turning backwards.

Randy Dandy, O - Lyrics
1. Now we are ready to sail for the Horn,
Way Hey Roll and go!
Our boots and our clothes, boys, are all in the pawn.
To me rollockin' randy dandy, O.
Heave a pawl, O heave away. Way Hey Roll and go!
The anchor's on board and the cable's all stored.
To me rollockin' randy dandy, O.
2. Soon we'll be warpin' her out through the locks,
Where the pretty young girls all come down in their frocks.
3. Come breast breast the bars, bullies, heave her away,
Soon we'll be rolling her down in the bay.
4. Sing goodbye Sally and sing goodbye Sue,
For we are the boys who can kick 'er through.
5. Man the the stout caps'n and heave with a will,
Soon we'll be driving her way down the hill.
6. We're outward bound for Vallipo Bay,
Get cracking, me lads, it's a hell of a way.
The most valuable and important member of the Jackdaw's crew. Thank you for making the voyages so intense
I'm glad you like the music!
@@SeanDagher Thanks to your music i've rekindled my fondness for such exciting time in history! Dusted my books and learned of a whole musical genre. Thanks a bunch!
I listen to the black flag soundtrack daily. Love Sean’s voice.
@@SeanDagher Your work made that video game one my childhood favorites, thank you seriously. Your voice is so cool man!
Hunting down all the Shanties was the first thing I’d do to hear all this man’s work
This and "Leave Her Johnny" are the best shanties ever!
Yes.
Agreed
My favorites!
Think so too👍
new york girls
I really appreciate the fun facts shared before the shanty. Coincidentally, I was just explaining last night to my wife what a pawl was when we were singing this one together while driving home.
So there you go! Your story is corroborated. I love hearing about people singing the songs, even before the videos!
Have you explained that rollicking is euphemism for fornication (like "that damn/bloody whoever") and Randy is a common name for first mates (like hands/sailors were usually Jacks, Johnnies or [Lo]Renzos) supervising the work of capstan being fully-dressed in uniform (hence, dandy)? :)
@@SeanDagher The new intro and one of the best shanties. Count me in.
@@Burvedys we had already discussed other lyrics previously.
@@RobKenchu Turns out I was wrong about pawls. Apparently they're the ratchets at the base of the capstan that prevents it turning in the wrong directions.
Rather soft spoken guy giving info, then starts singing with all his soul
That's when you know music is in his heart 💜
Thanks.
This song is very special to me, reminds me of my grandfather. I had your AC Black Flag songs Randy Dandy and Leave Her Johnny playing for his funeral, his name was John. He was an English Merchant Master Mariner. Went to school in England for merchant marine, sailed when he was 17 and never stopped. Sailed all over the world then came to Canada to sail the Great Lakes. He was a First Mate forever, he liked it better than being the Captain, said the Captain had too much paperwork and not enough sailing. Beautiful voice Sean, this song and leave her Johnny always move me to joy or to tears. Never stop. Thank you.
That's a beautiful life story. Thanks for sharing it. I'm glad I got to participate in the funeral. Very touching.
I hope this series never ends!
Me too.
I as well
I concur!
And just like that, memories of AC4: Black Flag come flooding back. Sailing the Caribbean for adventure and fortune during a torrid 2020. Wonderful work Sean!
Thanks, Xoriel. I'm glad it brings back good memories.
Currently playing AC4, damn fine game, chasing the song sheets to get shanties is a pain, still haven't found Leave her Johnny yet though
Fun fact sean was the one who sang the shanties in black flag
This was the first shanty I ever learned. I had Sean's voice stuck in my head for weeks after my first time hearing it in Black Flag. I was so enamored with his voice that I decided I wanted to be able to sing alongside him.
Ever since black flag released your voice always brought a smile to my face
Well thank you Adam. I'm happy to hear that you like it.
Were I to found a church praising the sea, you'd hear this in the hymnal, every sabbath. Gorgeous.
Wha Hey Men.
Your voice gives me inner peace. God bless you
I'm glad to hear that the music can be something positive for you.
@@SeanDagher I’m from the overseas in the middle East and i every single word of this shanty, can’t wait to go sailing in the summer and listen to it ♥️
i love when he talks about the song and what the things mean
this series has slowly begun to be a highlight of my week, great work and thank you Sean!
Thanks Raven! Happy to hear it can be something positive for you.
You're a staple in our household of 5! My 9 year old twins love to listen and sing along with you in the car, at home, while we are all preparing meals together and anywhere else we want to bust into song! You're marvelous and I love the tidbits of history you provide on your channel! Thank you!
Thanks STR. That's really nice to hear. I love hearing about families singing together.
i was born '81 in rostock at the baltic sea. my father and grandfather have lots of connections to the sea. when i played assassins creed 4 i loved to cruise the sea and listen to the shanties. then i found sean. and i love him from my heart. he speaks the sailors voice.
Hi Stefan, I played in Rostock in February, with Skye Consort & Emma Björling. Beautiful town. I hope to get back.
Love the new intro!! This arrangement gives a lovely haunting work song touch compared to the Black Flag version, makes it more epic and cinematic
Thanks Cooper. I wrote and recorded that intro many weeks ago but was very hesitant to remove the other one from the beginning of the videos. I'll see how it goes when more people have seen it. I'm glad you like the arrangement of the song. It's basically the same was what we did on the La Nef album, but without the percussion. Again, people seem pretty attached to the AC version so I'll be interested to see the reaction. I'm actually expecting more "dislikes" for that very reason. I hope you're doing well over there in lockdown in the UK.
@@SeanDagher Thanks Seán! Hope you're doing well, too. I'm not familiar with what's going on in Québec lockdown-wise but I know Ontario is under a state of emergency, so I wish you and your family good health and happiness. Surprisingly things have been busy over here so I unfortunately had to miss the last Zoom call, but I hope I can make the next one! And for Randy Dandy, I think once people hear this version they'll love it instantly :)
@@SeanDagher update, it’s been 2 weeks and you still have zero dislikes. Honestly I thought you had to be the shantyman from the AC version too. You did a stellar job and it shows.
@@Fugginshidmypant Thanks. Yes, that was me and some other guys on on AC.
@@SeanDagher okay first off, sorry for getting that wrong. thank you so very much for the work you did on that game. I’ve always loved older music but shanties were something that I found to be really special. Thanks again, and all the best.
With this song and “Dead horse” you’ve taught my 4 year old son to love music.
That's great! I love hearing about kids getting into music.
Listening to this whilst sailing to explore new lands to do side missions is the best
Yes, That's fun.
One of my favorites for sure! The shanty’s definitely where the best part of sailing the mighty jackdaw.
Good memories...
So many hours sailing around listening this..thank you captain for all journeys ❤️
You're welcome. I'm glad you like it.
Tellement merveilleux! Votre interprétation me tire des larmes à chaque fois. Merci! Merci!
I just spent 2 weeks quarantined in barracks with no internet and the only game I had downloaded on my laptop that I could play without internet was AC4. That game and your shanties kept me sane I can't thank you enough!
You are most welcome. I'm glad you at least had that.
this and drunken sailor are what got me into sea shanties. Of course, like most, I first heard these songs in Assassin's creed blackflag, the one and only assassin's creed game I played, and as soon as I heard "NOW WE ARE READY TO HEAD TO THE HORN!!!" I instantly knew it was you man. That very voice that got me hooked into singing shanties while I worked in high school.
Instantly subscribed the second I saw this man's glorious mustache D:
Good plan.
You should collaborate with "The Longest Johns"
*spoiler alert*
@@SeanDagher 😳😱
Its true now, lowlands low with TLJ and Sean Dagher.
@@megnam915 Absolute banger too.
One of my favs!!!
Mine too.
I'm just crying. The favorite shanty I first heard in AC4. Thanks for this. Such a nostalgic feel
You're welcome! Send me the bill for the kleenex.
Absolutely love the new theme! This song, specifically the AC4 version, have gotten me and so many others through a lot and really opened our eyes to the world of shanties.
Waiting for the inevitable cascade of new listeners to this channel as you’re the most well-known shantyman on the planet right now!
And although it goes without saying, excellent work once again Seán!
Hey, thanks Kia. I'm glad you like the new theme.
Wonderful! Randy Dandy-O was the first shanty I ever heard! (besides the two I sang in music class in grade 4 but I didn't know they were shanties at the time) This one has a special place in my heart!
Which ones did you sing in music class in grade 4?
@@SeanDagher It was I's the B'y and Donkey riding
Oh god I’se and B’y unlocked some memories form elementary school
@@Spineless-Lobster So Newfoundland, eh?
@@SeanDagher Ontario, guess it's in the curriculum lol
I actually appreciate the intro and explanation 😂 never would’ve known thank you!
You're welcome!
This makes me want to travel back in time! Oh how life seemed so much better back then, irrelevant of all the difficulties they faced, there was a purpose in life and not just work work work work work work
Having these songs to work to must have made it easier to do.
I think if you were to actually travel back the late 18th and 19th century, you'd get quite a shock! There's a reason why 50% of sea shanties are just thinly disguised (or not) complaints about the work, conditions, boat, captain and chef!
One of the best shanty by one of the best singers
Too kind.
such amazing memories of me as a teenager sailing in the caribean sea in Black Flag listening to this amazing shanty
Glad to hear it, Arthur.
Dude, you sound incredible ❤🎉. Very well done.
I’ve been listening to shanties for decades, never before have I heard an explanation beforehand. I love it!
I'm glad you like the format TS.
I'm glad that i found the voice who was my companion while i was wrecking ships and causing fear to the peoples hearts along the caribbean. Thank you for this great masterpices
You're welcome. I'm glad you made it here too.
You're doing the Lord's work here, Dagher. Thank you for your amazing work keeping these songs alive and adapting them to our time.
Thanks Richard. I'm glad to hear that people like the music.
What a beautiful shanty, just beautiful ...
Thanks! Happy to hear that you like it.
My personal favorite shanty, and this is my favorite version. You sing it phenomenally
Well triple Thanks, Thomas. I'm glad you like it.
Assassin's Creed Black Flag and Assassin's Creed Rogue made me appreciate and enjoy sea shanties! Thanks for the great performances!
I'm happy to hear that you like it.
This is a marvelous series.
I just discovered it after playing through AC Black Flag and Rogue and finding myself singing the shanties in my spare time and listening to them on Spotify.
I never really noticed how nice shanties can sound until now, especially when they’re sung by you.
Well, thanks, Sleinzer. I'm glad you like them and I'm glad you found the channel.
ever since I heard this song in assassins creed 4 I've sung this song this to myself either out loud or quietly/ in my head while at work doing my shitty, grinding, monotonous minimum wage jobs over the past several years. I can't tell you how much it's help me get through some really terrible shifts.
Thanks for writing, Tarth. I'm glad that you can enjoy these songs in that way. That's actually the whole point, isn't it.
It has now been canonically established that there is a member of Edward Kenway's crew with an amazing singing voice. But instead of his talent being recognised and having an illustrious singing career, he ended up becoming a pirate. 😂
One of the very best!
I sing it to my grandbabies.
I'm sure they love it.
So happy in the morning because of this song😆
Me too!
Love your commentary and history on the songs !
Thanks Sara. Don't forget to take it with a grain of salt!
this is one of my favorite shanties ever
Mine too.
i love the new theme song and i love that you kept the old one as the outro
Wa-hey! I couldn't get rid of it completely.
One of my Favorites!!!
Mine too.
My favorite version on RUclips - gorgeous!
Thanks, I'm glad that you like it.
Dear Mr. Dahger. I think you and your group are amazing and I've been listening to your music since playing Black Flag
Thanks! That's nice to hear.
Are you kidding? You're historical and personal commentary make the videos unique and amazing. Keep up the incredible work, sir, and carry on!
Thanks HOTSW.
Another incredible shanty my second favorite from assassins creed black flag, thank you for starting my morning off with this amazing shanty.
That's great to hear. Second favourite is pretty good.
this music is so epic, i just think about me sailing in the caribean sea with a strong wind and a light rain, with a bottle of a good rum.
Beautiful image.
YES! FINALLY! Sean, thank you dearly, my life is now complete. Have a fantastic day.
Thank you. I'm glad your life is complete.
So much love for this channel.
This channel loves you too!
I love the new theme!
Glad to hear it.
You my friend is what we call a unsung hero....
Unsung, eh? Awesome!
My favorite shanty from my favorite shanty man! Excellent job with this one, as always.
Triple thanks!
I always catch myself singing this at work and just making up verses, you did this shanty justice sir, bravo!
Yes! That's the whole point, isn't it!
My favorite shanty of all time.
It's one of the best for sure.
Oh my gosh!!!! This is fabulous! I just recorded and inserted this hauling song into an audio story (Podfic) I wish I had listened to this version first! It is great!!!
I actually really enjoy the explanation of the bits of lyrics, please do that more!
More to come.
I would like to hear "Here's a health to the company" in the next video
I'll do it eventually. I'm going to get through the shanties, then the sea songs, then general folk songs. That's when it'll be,
Randy dandy o it's perfect with this man's voice
Thanks Lad.
This man has no idea how big of a part he had in my life i downloaded black flag 1 month ago from steam and my favourite part is to just sail and listen to these shanties ❤ THANK YOU 🥃
Your voice is mesmerizing. Thank you for this great video and the description for the song 💐
Thanks S. I'm glad you like it.
Thank you for this beautiful song. I am going through a very tough time right now and your singing helps me a lot. stay safe my friend
Hey, JK. Nice to hear from you. I'm glad that this music can help. Isn't it amazing how songs can do that? Good luck with your tough time and keep singing. Seán.
@@SeanDagher nice of you to personally respond to me thank you so much. wish you the best
this is my favorite shanty
Pawls are tapered, being widened at their pivot for anchoring and narrow at their tip. A ratchet and pawl mechanism.
I actually really enjoy the parts where you talk about what parts of the lyrics mean. I find it really useful and interesting :)
Thanks Matthew. I'm glad you enjoy that part of the videos.
I realy like it when you go into detail with the terminology so take as much time as you need to explain. Great video and shanty!
That's nice to hear. Thank you.
Really great series. I love explanation for these songs
Super. Thanks for your support!
Thanks for helping turn me onto music I otherwise wouldn’t have listen to. Great job on AC Black Flag.
I really enjoyed this one.
Great!
4:11 Beautiful.
Thanks!
I have just discovered your channel while looking for a Randy Dandy Oh video,. Just imagine my face when I realized you were the voice I have heard so many times in AC4 !!
Welcome to the channel. I'm glad you found us.
I'm sorry, you're giving me a shanty AND info on where it came from and how it was used? Please don't shut up, I LOVE IT. This is amazing!
Thanks Diana! I won't shut up.
Your voice is awesome. Singing with you today was something I didn't know I needed until afterwards. Thank you. And I appreciate the background information you provide on the videos. I'm a bit of a history nerd. Your songs made me curious of history such as press gangs and other terms of the age of sail, which is another interesting facet of human evolution. People were definitely of sterner stuff back then. The sea could be an unforgiving place. I greatly appreciate what you do for music and history. I have several songs on my playlist. Quite fond of Press Gang and Shallow Brown. La Nef is quite good too. Their Deserts album is awesome. Thanks for introducing me to them as well. Be well good sir.
Thanks Bly. I'm glad you like the La Nef stuff too.
Fantastic. I love the sea shanties, thank You
Glad to hear it, Drop. Thanks!
This is my all time favorite shanty ever, and it was your voice that made me love it in the first place. I absolutely love this series, thanks for doing this!
It is my pleasure!
Just heard you, had to hit subscribe and notification bell.
Compelling explanation and wonderful music
Thank you very much.
Somehow I came by your songs ,I have ancestors which fished the Danube ,not seamen or anything ,but always I felt like seasongs suited me but failed to identify with Romanian ones, but these ones are just mindblowing and close to me !Thanks 👋✊🎩
Thanks Codrin. I'm glad you like them. There must be some Romanian river work songs that give the off same vibe. I'll keep an eye open.
Oh boy, I have been waiting for this song for about a month now
Me too.
What a beautiful performance! I love it. I am very surprised that Valparaiso is actually mentioned in a shanty, so thanks for showing that in the video!
Thanks M. Valparaiso features in many many songs. Usually pronounced Vallipo.
This is by far my favorite shanty. And I see by the passion with which you sing in this video you very much like this one too. Amazing work Sean. Thanks for improving my day that much more!
Yes, I really loved singing this one. I had been waiting for the right time.
This is awesome! Great song and Great voice
Thanks Gonzalo. I'm glad you like it all.
I love his voice, it brings me strong memories about assassin's creed 4 black flag... I love this song, and his voice even more!
Thanks!
Please do NOT stop to talk before the shanty, i really love the combination of information about the songs context mixed with the song itself in your videos! I'd even watch 30 min. videos about a single song like this !
I won't stop.
Thanks for making my childhood better and making me love shanties!
I'm glad to have been a positive element in your life.
I grew up doing living history and we sang shantys all the time. I've since moved around a lot and no longer take part but shantys are forever a part of me. Thanks Sean!
You're welcome. Nice to hear such stories.
Sean i am a huge fan and i just wanna say thank you for the songs ive been horribly ill for months doctors have no clue what it isand ive been listening to your music to keep my spirits up your stuff is amazing
I hope you health improves. Best wishes.
@@SeanDagher thank you that means so much to me
I would really like to sing a shanty with this gentleman.
Well, friend, I hope that when the world re-opens I can go on tour everywhere and sing with people again. I'm looking forward to that.
Love the new intro!!
It’s like a bonus shanty!
I’m new to the channel but damn glad I found it.
I'm glad you like the "bonus shanty" and the channel. Welcome aboard.
Sean I could listen to you talk about the song meanings as much as you sing!! Absolute favourite.
Would love to sing more captain songs - like captain Kidd
Thanks Allan! And good suggestion; I'll put it on the list.
@@SeanDagher amazing! My unborn child loves all of these and kicks along...it’s mother doesn’t appreciate it quite as much haha
I was waiting for this Shanty since this format begun.
It was a kind of journey until now and hope the best is yet to come.
Greetings from Italy :)
Yeah! That's how I was thinking of it, too! A journey from song to song until we got here. Who knows where we'll go next! Hello to Italy.
It's one of my favorite shantys!
Regards Sean
Mine too.
I don't often comment, but this song is special to me; because this song is what introduced me to sea shanties and to Sean Dagher, way back when, in a trailer for Assassin's Creed seven years ago. Just wanted to say I love this video series. I've seen every episode. I love the new intro. I think the text at the beginning was in too much of a rush to get to the song; the backstory and the anecdotes are just as cool.
Thanks Matthew. I'm glad you like the series and the songs. Many more to come!
Without this channel I would be nothing
I'm glad the music means something to you. Lots more to come.
I get a shiver from this voice in a good sense, just awesome the best I've ever heard so far
Thanks MassoxX. i'm glad you like it.
