Something I have never seen before, what with the whistles and microphone chanting. A very different drum solo, and a great one. I hope I am in that great of shape when I am 68 yrs. old. YOU ROCK, MERCER! Play on, my brother!
I'm continally amazed year after year that Jerry can still play like that. He's incredible. One of the most entertaining drummers ever! Always loved the one handed stuff he does at the end.
No two drummers are alike and there is no such thing as "Worlds greatest". Jerry and Neil are unique and have their own style. Neil is precision noise and Jerry is sheer power. I've seen both live and admire equally.
this guy was insane I don't think I have ever seen a drummer like him and I seen them in Calgary about 28-30 years ago and In Kamloops 3 months ago but He was retired by then But hes was the best in his day's which was a long time. my hat goes off to him ...Cheers and thx for the video
As a fellow drummer, he showed incredible power, dexterity, control, etc. Amazing. Opening for Styx, and Foreigner back in the day. That one stick roll!!! Freakish!!
I saw this guy do the solo at 2 different outdoor night shows in the Sudbury area. With the steam coming off his head and the strobes going made it very memorable.
I saw AW last summer and holy shit that was by a significant margine the best drum solo I've ever seen live. That last bit with the drum roll is absolutely insane. Jerry Mercer rocks!
Heard Jerry devastate his kit in Arnprior 2005. Absolutely phenomenal. So, so sorry to see him retire, but glad for him, too, being that's what he wants--and he sure has earned it in sweat equity. What a performer. He just plain ROCKS.
I seen April wine in kingston a few years ago.. Yep gerry is one awesome drummer.. makes it look so easy.. MY wife could not believe the solo he put on..
GO JERRY GO! This was one of the most interesting drum solos to watch (I was there) and I thought "Wow, this guy has drive. He looked about ready to quit somewhere in the middle, but he kept going." He is a great inspiration! :) thanks for posting the video!
No doubt Mercer was good (especially for his age) but "best in the world"? Uh, I don't think so.... Best Jazz drummer = Buddy Rich hands down. Best Rock drummer would probably have to go to Neil Peart, but that would be open to debate, based on individual taste.
Mercer played in Mashmakhan before april wine. It is a shame he retired from the band back in 2009 and it will not be heard anymore. I had the pleasure of hearing his solo 3 times. gananoque in 2004 cornwall in 2007 ottawa in 2008
Went to go see April Wine in Moncton a year ago and was anxiously awaiting who would be the one to replace to king of power drummers.....to my disappointment, they brought in a light weight....and the bassist was gone.....totally killed the live show.....April Wine needs a drummer that makes your heart change it's pattern.
This was a free show April Wine did in Kingston Ontario for the launch of 96fm. Trooper did a free show last summer for 96fms 1st birthday bash. ( check out my videos from that show too.)
I hate hearing that April Wine is a great Canadian rock band. They are,an awesome world wide rock band who hales from Canada our friends from the north.
Watching that drum solo I cam't stop laughing. Nel Peart might be the best but Jerry is more fun to watch!! Is Jerry Mercer dead? And if so what killed him?
One of the best drummers in the history of Rock N Roll.🤘🤘
For a guy is age he had the energy of a 20 year old. He was one of the best drummers out there.🥁🥁
Phenomenal doesn't even begin to describe Jerry's drum solos. I think he was born with drum sticks in his hands!!
Something I have never seen before, what with the whistles and microphone chanting. A very different drum solo, and a great one. I hope I am in that great of shape when I am 68 yrs. old. YOU ROCK, MERCER! Play on, my brother!
Saw them last year, an Gerry played a wicked drum solo. He's 78 years old! Keep on rocking Gerry!
Someday, all drummers will be as cool as Mr. Mercer. Rock on , my Brother!
I'm continally amazed year after year that Jerry can still play like that. He's incredible. One of the most entertaining drummers ever! Always loved the one handed stuff he does at the end.
Very underrated drummer...and band!
This is Grandpa Jerry to me =D
My uncle is his son. =D
I remember when Grandpa Jerry and April Wine came to the Drayton Vally hotel to play =D
April Wine Rocks Period and so does the Drummer!. One of the greatest bands of all time!
The legend himself!
the last part at the end was off the charts fucking awsome !!!!
I was lucky enough to see this show...wow.. I first saw April Wine in Kingston in the early 70's.. He did the fantasic single hand roll then
No two drummers are alike and there is no such thing as "Worlds greatest". Jerry and Neil are unique and have their own style. Neil is precision noise and Jerry is sheer power. I've seen both live and admire equally.
Hard to believe he's 68... big man is laying it down here!
What a fantastic drummer - surely one of the best in rock!!
this guy was insane I don't think I have ever seen a drummer like him and I seen them in Calgary about 28-30 years ago and In Kamloops 3 months ago but He was retired by then But hes was the best in his day's which was a long time. my hat goes off to him ...Cheers and thx for the video
Saw these guys at least 6 times. In the 80's 90's 00's and 10's. From stadiums to little hick bars. My favorite band live.
Always incredible Sir!

As a fellow drummer, he showed incredible power, dexterity, control, etc. Amazing. Opening for Styx, and Foreigner back in the day. That one stick roll!!! Freakish!!

Thank You Jerry Mercer for 35 years of kickass Drumming with April Wine...Enjoy your retirement.
INDEPENDENCE FOLKS! this is what it looks like....
Pretty much the same solo as 1981,I love the double stroke snare roll at the end. Awesome drummer!🥁🤘💙
Now That's a workout. and amasing live
He sure looks, and sounds, like a man having some fun and loves to entertain.
Yeah, and he never got caught up in the whole rock look and style thing. Just a guy loving playing drums and music.
Happy 77th Gerald "Jerry" Mercer (born April 27, 1939 in Newfoundland)

Heard Jerry devastate his kit in Arnprior 2005. Absolutely phenomenal. So, so sorry to see him retire, but glad for him, too, being that's what he wants--and he sure has earned it in sweat equity. What a performer. He just plain ROCKS.

This man is a fucking god, I love the beat of the solo! Can't imagine why he isn't up there with Carl Palmer or John Bonham.

Yes .it is!!
VERY WELL DONE BROTHER !
Love a drummer who has a Musical Vision for a solo.
i was there too, the drum solo was tight.
best drummer in the world
No doubt Mercer was good (especially for his age) but "best in the world"? Uh, I don't think so....
Best Jazz drummer = Buddy Rich hands down. Best Rock drummer would probably have to go to Neil Peart, but that would be open to debate, based on individual taste.
Saw him with AW in 1980 in Québec City and In QC again a bit later.
awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Phenomenal 👊 Love, This Guy. 😍🍁👊 . Seen Them in,2005. Excellent Drummer !!
Mercer played in Mashmakhan before april wine. It is a shame he retired from the band back in 2009 and it will not be heard anymore. I had the pleasure of hearing his solo 3 times.

YEAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY JERRY!

NICE!!!

I miss his big double bass kit with the two different sized kicks.
that is fucking crazy shit!
what the @!#@$!!$# wow this is like great what a testament to his druming epic
OH YA!!!
Guy was wicked
He is from Newfoundland!
I ve seen many drum solos and still rate everyone compared to A.W. + Jerry Mercer which was the early 80s!
Jerry's drum rolls with the flaming sticks. Now that was interesting.
Frickin' EHHHH!
I hate hearing that April Wine is a great Canadian rock band. They are,an awesome world wide rock band who hales from Canada our friends from the north.
a question!!! this man was the voice of animal in the muppets show???
singing like Tom Jones and playing?cool!
Jerry Mercer? No fuckin' around.
nah... i was at the free show in ajax... it was alot darker when he played his solo in ajax
A little correction... he didn't "retire". He was unceremoniously turfed from the band. AW is not AW without him. What a shame.
I wonder what Justin Peeper will be doin' when he's 68......
Happy face ----> :D
Terrible sound quality and still worth listening to...great drummer!
It's enough time to learn how to play!
Watching that drum solo I cam't stop laughing. Nel Peart might be the best but Jerry is more fun to watch!! Is Jerry Mercer dead? And if so what killed him?
Jerry's still living, but he's retired.
alive and well!!!
One of the most talented drummers of our time!!! underrated by name but praised when his name does come up!📻📻📻🤘🤘
Ummmmmm... I agree that he's awesome but..... he's actually 69 years old. Not to mention that he also fought testicular cancer at one point.
This is a fine drum solo. Although some what lame. Still okay.
Great drummer but someone please take that microphone and whistle away from him.
Kick ass solo
It'd be nice if the rest of the band looked like they gave a shit though. They all look completely bored
