Always found it interesting that during the filming of this film, Charlton Heston noted “an instinctive segregation on the set. Not only would the apes eat together, but the chimpanzees ate with the chimpanzees, the gorillas ate with the gorillas, the orangutans ate with the orangutans, and the humans would eat off by themselves. It was quite spooky.” HOw much does that tell us about society even now?

Rod Serling came up with the idea for the ending. But the social commentary in the film was NOT written by Serling. He was actually not responsible for the finished script. When he adapted the novel, his treatment was a very faithful adaptation, but it was too expensive to film. The book was very different, it was an advanced ape society set in a NYC-like metropolis. So, the other writer Michael Wilson (who's considered one of greatest screenwriters of all time) was brought in to scale down the story to a primitive ape society, which of course changed the whole theme of the story with apes living in a dogmatic society rather than a technologically progressive one. The whole story of Taylor being persecuted by this religious ape cult was based on Wilson's own experiences when he was blacklisted in Hollywood for his political views. The characters' names changed, all the dialogue was Michael Wilson's, the themes, the overall plot, the philosophical discussions, the situations etc. are all Michael Wilson. Even Serling credited 95% of the finished script to Wilson and said it wasn't really his movie. But the studio wanted to honor him for his contributions. The only thing really credited to Serling was the idea for the ending, which he used in a previous Twilight Zone episode. Although, the reveal of the Statue of Liberty was different in Serling's script. It was not the "You blew it up, D you all to H" moment as written in the film.

*Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (1970)
*Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971)
*Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (1972) (there are two versions of this film - The Theatrical Cut & Unrated Alternate Cut - with a different opening, a different ending, and other scenes that were changed...The reason for the changes was because this was intened on being the final film in the Apes series & didn't leave any openings for any possible sequels and due to poor test screenings of patrons at the time saying that the unrated alternate cut was too dark & violent...Now, personally I recommend the theatrical cut as the best & the one you should watch first...but the Unrated Alternate Cut is also an interesting watch as well to see what was changed overall).
*Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (1973) (there are two versions of this film - The Theatrical Cut & The Extended Cut...due to financial problems with the studio 20th Century Fox at the time, the film was heavily edited by the studio themselves to make it under 86 minutes, against the wishes of the producer Arthur P. Jacobs & director J. Lee Thompson. The shorter runtime would allow extra showing per day in the theaters...The full 96 minutes Extended Cut is the version that the producer and director intened before all the studio edits, that they both weren't involved with and, in my own opinion, the extended cut better flows/connects the film to the rest of the films within the franchise).
In 2001 Tim Burton remade Planet Of The Apes - with Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth and a cameo by Charlton Heston. It is a stand alone film and is ok movie but is very underrated in my own opinion.
The Andy Serkis Apes films (which acts as soft reboots and prequels to the orginal Apes films) are...
*Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011)
*Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (2014)
*War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017)
    And recently...
*Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes (2024)
They're all good & worth watching in my opinion....
Also, if you haven't got your fill of Apes yet there was also a short lived live-action & short lived animated TV series of The Planet Of Apes that are both entertaining as well.

    1) Taylor, the ultimate misanthrope, is forced to defend humanity throughout the movie once the first hunt ends. What irony.
    2) Look at Taylor's face while Cornelius reads the 29th scroll. He knows these words could've come from himself only a short time ago. He's stunned.
    3) Also, as far as the ending, the quote from Einstein I think applies: "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones".

Just thinking about it again really geeks me out at the juxtaposition presented in the epilogue of the 5th original movie (Battle). WOW, this franchise was thought provoking on so many levels. There is still some merit in "Beneath", especially in the concepts that were retroactively developed. As a stand alone, it added some social commentary along with the sci fi concepts.
It just simply wasn't presented well IMO. Too many weakly written "McGuffins" to drive the plot points from "A" to "B" to "C". Some weak attempts solely to "shock the audience" as well.

The original ending for Pierre Bouille's novel "Planet of the Apes" on which this film was based was different than the ending of the film.
In the novel, the original crew did travel to a DIFFERENT PLANET. In the end, Taylor escapes and uses the original spacecraft (which was not destroyed) to return to Earth thousands of years in the future. He lands at Orly in Paris only to be greeted by hordes of apes. So the theme is consistent between film and novel.

That’s what’s so great about the og film how many themes it deals with and how much social commentary. “The forbidden zone was once a paradise, but the greed of man made it barren.” Habitat loss, deforestation, man encroaching on nature. “Destroy the cave. What I do is with no pleasure.” Having to play along with the cover up versus causing societal chaos if they knew the truth, essentially the state hiding things from the public. The role reversal and how much it mirrors man’s treatment of lower animals - aka allegory of slavery and institutionalized ethnic discrimination. All major issues when film first released and just as contentious issues today if not more so.

There's a comedy YT channel "Hanging with Dr. Z." of him hosting a fictional talk show. Of course not the original actor of this film.

The new Apes films have callbacks and Easter eggs to all of the original franchise films.

20:42 It cracked me up to see how happy Addie was that the apes left a hostage.

One thing most people don’t pick up on: The apes were in the process actively exterminating Humans. The only humans from the hunt left alive were the ones going to scientific research. That was ending with Zera and Cornelius going on trial.

This is the first installment of a five movie arc that tells a whole story, part of which the reboot retells. Unfortunately, Caesar in this universe was born able to speak because his parents her two of the apes we meet in this movie. They're celebrities on 20th Century Earth, doing talk shows; their hosts astounded by talking apes. When Caesar leads his rebellion, no one is surprised apes can talk.
Aliens speaking English was a conceit that 70s audiences took for granted. As was extras standing still pretending to be mannequins. Much cheaper than using a prop house.
This movie is based on a French novel. In that novel, ape civilization is identical to the human one. The hunt at the beginning was a proper safari. The apes speak their own language. This movie was made only because advances in prosthetic makeup proved the apes wouldn't be laughed at; & because they could make the ape society more primitive, since renting horses is cheaper than renting motor vehicles.
This movie was made during the Cold War between the US & USSR. We were afraid of nuclear war.
