Technically not mentioning silver then if they’re not using his name at all. You could say it’s implying silver but it’s not specifically mentioned so you can’t really count it as a direct reference

Would of been neat if the crapped plot point of Sonic losing his memories of his friends panned out. He would be reminiscing one moment and then blank on the person's name.
This is actually so cute. This sort of dialogue characterizes Sonic as someone who’s always thinking about his friends, and wondering how they’re doing/feeling. It’s nice to hear Sonic talk about things without cracking lame jokes all the time.
Yeah that's true it got old honestly for Sonic to keep cracking jokes so much,at first I thought it was okay from Colors and Generations a little bit but as it went on it just kept going on and ON!!!! 😩 HERE glad this game feels balanced! 👍
I was thinking that the sheer number of these references made them feel forced (Ian Flynn is a continuity buff, and sometimes he goes overboard), but when you put it like that, it _is_ kind of heartwarming. Bonus points because Sonic generally seems more comfortable showing his friends affection in this game, from openly calling Tails his "little bro" (sure, we all knew he saw him that way, but he's never said it out loud in a game before) to actually returning one of Amy's hugs at the end (and not even seeming embarrassed about it--shippers, take notice).
I mean, I like the funny side of Sonic (i.e, Sonic Colors or idk, AOSTH? There has to be a funny version of Sonic out there that doesn't make you cringe) but Ian Flynn writing the stories is fair enough on my half as well because doing that will give us good games. Plus, I enjoyed the hell out of the IDW comics!
And have Shadow mischaracterized by him while he blames SEGA? Or have the Deadly Six keep showing up even when most of the fanbase doesn't like them? He's written for this franchise since 2006. He's heading for a burnout sooner or later.
It was nice hearing a reference to Jet, it’s a shame that Sonic Free Riders seems to have killed Sega’s interest in having the Babylon Rogues appear again.
The IDW comics did have them play a significant role in the Zombots arc. Plus, they are in Sonic Forces Speed Battle, so there is a possibility of them returning still.
I love how Sonic mentions both Shadow and Blaze saying that he would love to get some help from them ❤ Blaze is often forgotten but she's one of the most powerful allies Sonic has 🔥 I hope we'll see her in the next games

Bro, he just canonized Tangle. And when he mentioned Jet I just about did a backflip because Sonic Riders hasn't been mentioned in the last 10 years of Sonic games! The lore! The lore is alive and well! It is beautiful!!! These mentions are also really smart because most Sonic games either ignore older games and Sonic's friends or they include said friends but don't implement them in the story so it ends up being a bloated mess. But this is perfect! They acknowledge Sonic's friends and the wider world but those friends are not needed for the story so they don't physically show up! It's the perfect middle ground and it's what's best for this story and the wider Sonic lore!!!
I've been saying this for a long time: the problem with Sonic's friends is _not_ that there's too many of them, it's that they aren't properly utilized outside of racing spin-offs and such. Anyway, what's cool about this game is that having Team Sonic (temporarily) split up creates a good opportunity for each of them to team up with some of the other characters in the future (we know Amy will be traveling with Cream and Sticks, so perhaps Sonic could work with Silver and Blaze next time, or Knuckles could work with Team Chaotix, for example). And yeah, it was definitely good to hear Jet's name mentioned--I was getting tired of people claiming the Riders games weren't canonical or that they must take place in the future. Also, if Tangle is canonical, I presume Whisper is as well, since they're kind of a package deal.
Just because they make small little references to older games doesn’t mean they’ll be giving us those older games again, and if they did make them they would suck ass just like colors ultimate did.
I love how Sonic referencing his other adventures like wondering what’s up Jet’s up to or saying how Tangle would love to run around the ruins. Really shows that Sonic Cares about this friends,even the ones who were his enemies first!
A reminder, Jet is not really Sonic's friend, he's obviously a friendly rival. Still, I'm glad Sonic talk about his friends, his rivals _and_ his enemies.
I mean, that's how Knux and Shadow started with him. The bond he has with his rivals truly changes their viewpoint towards him whether it's out of sheer respect or care for him. Even Eggman respects him in some aspects.

Ian wrote the dialogue, so you already knew he was gonna squeeze in a reference or two to the comics. With Tangle actually being mentioned in a mainline game, it likely means Whisper and villains such as Starline and Surge are officially canon. Hoping they eventually become playable in the next game or DLC.
I mean this game could have more villains. Like in Mario games you not only had Bowser, but Bowser Jr. or sometimes other evil creatures who want destroy, conquer or do something different. I wish that Starline would be alive.

Yep thats sonic. I mean saving his friends is his number one priority in this game. He considers everyone who isn't evil his friend. If your like eggman or starline or the deadly six which I like them who wants chaos and destruction to the world then sonic will be your enemy

I love the Cream comments,especially this part 1:17.I hope she returns from a background character that she is getting recently. It’s unfortunate that Sonic doesn’t mention Silver in this game but the other character(especially Shadow,Cream,Rogue,Zavok,Blaze and Omega) comments are incredible but one that confused me was Tangle. Is she and Sticks canon now.
Ever since Sonic Channel, and any mention or cameo they make, including comics, Sticks and Tangle are canon to the main series. And yes, that even includes the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series, where Sticks made her debut in Rio 2016. Sticks is multiversal with both the main Sonic Universe and the Boom Universe.
I love that they mentioned Blaze, she's one of my favorites Sonic characters. I really hope she returns in future games and plays a big role in the plot

Well, I imagine she would be upset but just wouldn’t lash out or blame anyone and understands Sonic did what he could. In the IDW comics, when Cream lost her mother, we can see she was seething deep inside but didn’t blame anyone for it. She’s surprisingly mature for 6 year old.

Given Tangle and even Sticks are canon to the mainline games now, makes me wonder how many other characters outside the games (aside from Archie) could make it in at some point. Fingers crossed they could bring in Cosmo from Sonic X or Agent Stone from the live-action films at some point in the future.
It's just as Somecallmejohnny said. This game is validation for all us longtime fans. All of those games, all of those adventures, all of those spin-offs, those COMICS *happened.* They weren't forgotten, they were treated with equal reverence as everyone's basic backstory. It might come off as random fanservice, but for newer fans, it'll get them to ask "who are all these people he's talking about?" and discover AN ENTIRE WORLD of older stories.

Shadow not being DLC would be a massive L. He already has energy attacks and did platforming combat before Sonic. He doesn't even need to have a story. EZ money.

Wow Sonic mentioned Blaze. Imo she's one of the most neglected and wasted characters in this series. Would love for her to get a bigger role someday, flesh out her character a bit more.
The Blaze from Rush could be usefull being as strong as Sonic and with Super Form..., just certain Black Hedgeogh that for some reason is side character when he could be of great help...
Though she hasn't had a major role in the games since Rush Adventure, she's been pretty significant in the IDW comics narratively. Highly recommend giving those a read because it's the first in a long time her character has been done justice.
I don't think Sonic has ever even mentioned Omega in an actual game. Now we need to see Sonic actually interact with them in a future game! It's also great to hear Tangle get a mention! Now let's go the whole hog and bring her into the games! Thank you, Ian Flynn!
Well. It's a bit confusing, but they only exist in the Classic Sonic dimension. So, we can't count on Honey, Mighty, Ray or Team Hooligan (Fang/Nack, Bark and Bean) to be canon.
The game really went all out in small detail with mentions other characters of both old & new + ally & enemy; like when they mentioned In-Story Dialogue with Dark Gaia, Infinite, and they even mentioned Sticks at the end!!!

If Silver and Classic are there It was the perfect opportunity to have Blaze. But in all honesty I'm kind of glad she wasn't there because I know she wouldn't have amounted to anything. Tangle is the most interesting name to bring up since she only exists in the comics so far but I think of all the IDW original characters, Tangle fits into the overall world the best!
Actually... the IDW comics are indeed canon to the games. Meaning it's not just Tangle, but EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. in the IDW comics. Whisper, Surge, Kit, Starline, ALL OF THEM.
With this trend of abit extended character mentioning. I honestly wish that Chip was mentioned by Sonic like around the ruin like areas at 0:30. It's not just past references, but also the interactions between Sonic and his friends, Dr. Eggman and Sage, and the overarching plot. Plus there's tons of new ideas being thrown into the mix: the islands, others before Sonic who used the chaos emeralds, the coco, etc. If you're gonna hate someone, at least hate them for something they actually did

I love nods to past characters, specially obscure ones. But what i would really love is a main-line Sonic game that lets you play as said characters, the cast is so wide that it feels kinda like a waste to not take advantage of it.

@@Speeddemon105she and the others still always have been canon since in the IDW comics of the Modern Sonic era that she, Whisper, and the others are from started to began a month later after the events of Forces. And since there’s no mention of the events of Frontiers would still say that it’s pretty much clear of where it happens, and with it being after the events of Forces (while some during the events of Forces in flashbacks) and before the events of Frontiers.
It hits me in the nostalgia in a way. Like the way you had that special group of friends when you were a kid or teenager. Then a long time goes by which feels like not much had changed. You are still being you. Now you are a grown up going through life on your own. Then occasionally you get reminded of your old friends and wonder what they are up to. That is the exact feeling I got with this part of the game. I used to LOVE Sonic games as a kid. My favorite part were the cool friends he had. Then I stopped playing Sonic games for a while, but decided to pick this one up. Him reminiscing about his old friends didn’t feel like small references the Sonic Team put together for fun. They felt like l memories being brought back.
I like it when Sonic mentions Cream in the game. Its a shame that she doesn't appear in Sonic Frontiers.🙂 I hope Cream and Cheese will return in future Sonic games and become part of the storyline. SEGA must let it happen! And I'm begging now.🙏
That and Chao Gardens. Hopefully they also introduce her father at some point. I imagine Cream's father as a tall athletic brown rabbit with a top hat and black vest and bowtie accompanied by a Hero Chao named Cake and a Dark Chao named Cracker. @ghostgauntlet2746 whenever shadow is at the chaos island we see the volcano go off which means someone just finished beating the pinball game and since we see eggman tech around we have to assume sonic did in fact beat the pinball and is on the island well at least the one from frontiers is on the island while gens sonic is like going around city escape or something
@@Andrews_Studio whenever shadow visits a level in the game, he doesn’t go to the exact level with everyone else on it. The levels in both Sonic generations and shadow generations are a recreation from the characters’ memories. Hence why they’re in a white space
Other characters that are not included but are brought up in the story are Tikal and Infinite. Chaos and G.U.N are both mentioned in the Egg Memos. Silver is not mentioned at all which is strange considering that Blaze is mentioned. there's also a reference to Sally Acorn as well as the Elder Koco says "Do it to it."
Strange that Tangle and Sticks are in the Main games continuity now considering that Boom and IDW are seperate universes from the games. Well, if it saves Sticks from purgatory and allows Tangle to break out of her origin continuity, I'm game! On a side note, love the mention of the other characters in the series. The switch and bait with Zavok is nice 😂!

Considering Ian Flynn is one of the main writers and Tangle's popularity to even make it into a mobile spin off with a 3D, her making it into the main continuity was about to happen. But Sega fully owns Tangle and Whisper, so it was bound to happen. But my wish is for the Freedom Fighters from SatAM/Archie Comics to become apart of the mainstream games still.
I really to hope the Freedom Fighters do not appear. They were not so great additions to the Sonic series. We did not need Sally Acorn, nor did we need Rotor Walrus, or Antoine, or Bunnie Raboot even. They are wastes of spaces, not to mention that now that the Sonic series has more characters they can use, we don’t even need any of them. The Sonic series has done just fine without the Freedom Fighters. Not to mention, the pissy reaction from ungrateful fanbrats when Ian announced that the Freedom Fighters won’t appear in IDW made me lose a lot of enthusiasm for those characters. Wasn’t it clear that SEGA wasn’t going to make Sally Acorn or any of the other Freedom Fighters canon to the mainline games? I just want them to stay far away from the Sonic games. If you want them to appear in the games though, then be my guess.

Considering that Sonic Mania got even the highest score in gaming medias in 30 years [not even Frontiers which is a pretty good game did that yet], and most of the hype was because the additions of Mighty and Ray.. Well.. A lot of people does care about these characters and in a major part.

What's interesting is that Tangle a comic character and Sticks a Boom character both get mentioned meaning both are canon to the mainline game universe, someone could make (and probably has made) an essay about why Sonic's ensemble cast is important and deserves more attention in the games

This is actually so cute. This sort of dialogue characterizes Sonic as someone who’s always thinking about his friends, and wondering how they’re doing/feeling. It’s nice to hear Sonic talk about things without cracking lame jokes all the time.
Yeah that's true it got old honestly for Sonic to keep cracking jokes so much,at first I thought it was okay from Colors and Generations a little bit but as it went on it just kept going on and ON!!!! 😩 HERE glad this game feels balanced! 👍
I was thinking that the sheer number of these references made them feel forced (Ian Flynn is a continuity buff, and sometimes he goes overboard), but when you put it like that, it _is_ kind of heartwarming. Bonus points because Sonic generally seems more comfortable showing his friends affection in this game, from openly calling Tails his "little bro" (sure, we all knew he saw him that way, but he's never said it out loud in a game before) to actually returning one of Amy's hugs at the end (and not even seeming embarrassed about it--shippers, take notice).

I love how Sonic mentions both Shadow and Blaze saying that he would love to get some help from them ❤ Blaze is often forgotten but she's one of the most powerful allies Sonic has 🔥 I hope we'll see her in the next games

These mentions are also really smart because most Sonic games either ignore older games and Sonic's friends or they include said friends but don't implement them in the story so it ends up being a bloated mess. But this is perfect! They acknowledge Sonic's friends and the wider world but those friends are not needed for the story so they don't physically show up! It's the perfect middle ground and it's what's best for this story and the wider Sonic lore!!!

I've been saying this for a long time: the problem with Sonic's friends is _not_ that there's too many of them, it's that they aren't properly utilized outside of racing spin-offs and such. Anyway, what's cool about this game is that having Team Sonic (temporarily) split up creates a good opportunity for each of them to team up with some of the other characters in the future (we know Amy will be traveling with Cream and Sticks, so perhaps Sonic could work with Silver and Blaze next time, or Knuckles could work with Team Chaotix, for example). And yeah, it was definitely good to hear Jet's name mentioned--I was getting tired of people claiming the Riders games weren't canonical or that they must take place in the future. Also, if Tangle is canonical, I presume Whisper is as well, since they're kind of a package deal.

Ian wrote the dialogue, so you already knew he was gonna squeeze in a reference or two to the comics. With Tangle actually being mentioned in a mainline game, it likely means Whisper and villains such as Starline and Surge are officially canon. Hoping they eventually become playable in the next game or DLC.

I love the Cream comments,especially this part 1:17.I hope she returns from a background character that she is getting recently. Rule of thumb if character is mentioned or makes a cameo in one way or another they are canon. So yes they are canon…yes this includes tie in comics.
Ever since Sonic Channel, and any mention or cameo they make, including comics, Sticks and Tangle are canon to the main series.
And yes, that even includes the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series, where Sticks made her debut in Rio 2016.
Sticks is multiversal with both the main Sonic Universe and the Boom Universe.
Honestly not surprised if Ian Flynn really did just make the comics canon to the game storyline.

Fingers crossed they could bring in Cosmo from Sonic X or Agent Stone from the live-action films at some point in the future.

Though she hasn't had a major role in the games since Rush Adventure, she's been pretty significant in the IDW comics narratively. Highly recommend giving those a read because it's the first in a long time her character has been done justice.

Tangle is the most interesting name to bring up since she only exists in the comics so far but I think of all the IDW original characters, Tangle fits into the overall world the best!
Actually... the IDW comics are indeed canon to the games. Meaning it's not just Tangle, but EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. in the IDW comics. Whisper, Surge, Kit, Starline, ALL OF THEM.

It's not just past references, but also the interactions between Sonic and his friends, Dr. Eggman and Sage, and the overarching plot. Plus there's tons of new ideas being thrown into the mix: the islands, others before Sonic who used the chaos emeralds, the coco, etc.

@@Speeddemon105she and the others still always have been canon since in the IDW comics of the Modern Sonic era that she, Whisper, and the others are from started to began a month later after the events of Forces. And since there’s no mention of the events of Frontiers would still say that it’s pretty much clear of where it happens, and with it being after the events of Forces (while some during the events of Forces in flashbacks) and before the events of Frontiers.
I like the detail of sonic thinking about his friends. Espicially ones that Overlord Sega hasnt graced us with in a while, like Cream.
It hits me in the nostalgia in a way. Like the way you had that special group of friends when you were a kid or teenager. Then a long time goes by which feels like not much had changed. You are still being you. Now you are a grown up going through life on your own. Then occasionally you get reminded of your old friends and wonder what they are up to. That is the exact feeling I got with this part of the game. I used to LOVE Sonic games as a kid. My favorite part were the cool friends he had. Then I stopped playing Sonic games for a while, but decided to pick this one up. Him reminiscing about his old friends didn’t feel like small references the Sonic Team put together for fun. They felt like l memories being brought back.
This really hit me harder after losing some of them and its going to happen again at some point

That and Chao Gardens. Hopefully they also introduce her father at some point. I imagine Cream's father as a tall athletic brown rabbit with a top hat and black vest and bowtie accompanied by a Hero Chao named Cake and a Dark Chao named Cracker. Not to mention his name being Graham would fit nicely too.

@ghostgauntlet2746 whenever shadow is at the chaos island we see the volcano go off which means someone just finished beating the pinball game and since we see eggman tech around we have to assume sonic did in fact beat the pinball and is on the island well at least the one from frontiers is on the island while gens sonic is like going around city escape or something
@@Andrews_Studio whenever shadow visits a level in the game, he doesn’t go to the exact level with everyone else on it. The levels in both Sonic generations and shadow generations are a recreation from the characters’ memories. Hence why they’re in a white space
Other characters that are not included but are brought up in the story are Tikal and Infinite. Chaos and G.U.N are both mentioned in the Egg Memos. Silver is not mentioned at all which is strange considering that Blaze is mentioned. there's also a reference to Sally Acorn as well as the Elder Koco says "Do it to it."

Considering Ian Flynn is one of the main writers and Tangle's popularity to even make it into a mobile spin off with a 3D, her making it into the main continuity was about to happen. But Sega fully owns Tangle and Whisper, so it was bound to happen.
But my wish is for the Freedom Fighters from SatAM/Archie Comics to become apart of the mainstream games still.
Sega said many times that they WELL NOT bring any character from satam or whatever btw look it up before you go nuts

I really to hope the Freedom Fighters do not appear. They were not so great additions to the Sonic series. We did not need Sally Acorn, nor did we need Rotor Walrus, or Antoine, or Bunnie Raboot even. They are wastes of spaces, not to mention that now that the Sonic series has more characters they can use, we don’t even need any of them. The Sonic series has done just fine without the Freedom Fighters.
Not to mention, the pissy reaction from ungrateful fanbrats when Ian announced that the Freedom Fighters won’t appear in IDW made me lose a lot of enthusiasm for those characters. Wasn’t it clear that SEGA wasn’t going to make Sally Acorn or any of the other Freedom Fighters canon to the mainline games? I just want them to stay far away from the Sonic games. If you want them to appear in the games though, then be my guess.
I really hope Cream & Gemerl come back in a future game…

What's interesting is that Tangle a comic character and Sticks a Boom character both get mentioned meaning both are canon to the mainline game universe, someone could make (and probably has made) an essay about why Sonic's ensemble cast is important and deserves more attention in the games
I know that some parts of the fanbase don't necessarily like Ian Flynn, but I really like how he unites and integrates different things and characters from Sonic different canons.
