I'm more curious than anything to see what this looks like. He's never worked on a character like this at all. He has only done the typical james gunn thing with characters he knows he can get away with. Superman is a different beast. Him writing and directing shows me he must be taking this very seriously. Sometimes directors get the itch to do something a bit different and hopefully that's what's happening with Gunn. One thing Gunn is very good at is making audiences fall in love with his characters. I think he could portray a very VERY relatable Superman if he puts his mind to it.
Letting James Gunn to do Superman is a smart decision. Going against this, is fucking stupid. Me as DC fan I can’t bring negativity to this guy that the movie will be a launch pad of the DCU and seeing new projects for the future. I’m not afraid to see what he’s creating.
John’s point at the end is spot on! What Gunn is doing takes balls of steel. He’s probably already written the movie and knows how good it is. That’s the only explanation I can think of.
Well, considering he was brought in like months ago before he got announced as the co-head of DC Studios, he's being writing it for a big chunk amount of time
@@Merdicano yes that’s what I mean. I think he started way before he got offered the job. When DC offered him Superman before Suicide Squad, that’s what put the idea in his head.
@@craigd7333 That could be. Maybe considering how well-read he's always been in comics, and concerning with Superman, he's had the outline of this story for a way longer time. It just came the right moment and time to now making it into fruition
James Gunn’s film works have been imo quite good. Super, GotG 1 & 2 (hopefully 3), The Suicide Squad. And even his TV work for Peacemaker + The GotG Holiday Special….he’s right for the job. Can’t wait for his Superman.
Gunn’s Superman: Legacy doesn’t need to make a billion dollars. What it needs to do is get good reviews from critics and get the general audience on board with this new version of the character. If it does that, it will build a strong foundation for the new DCU. That’s the main issue with the DCEU, it started with Man of Steel which got bad reviews and divisively split audiences and it only went downhill from there with BvS and Suicide Squad. 3 stinkers in a row.
Incredibly hopeful for this movie - Time will tell and I think it will be a total breath of fresh air. These last two decades, globally we've all become a bunch of mopey misery guts. Not surprising with the world, politics and the 21st century changing. There was nothing wrong with the story and universe set by MoS - there's space for all sorts of universes and directorial perspectives, but right now I think we need to see a refreshing Superman. It's what the world needs right now - not just to appease the fanboys and girls. PS Remember when everyone was moaning about Daniel Craig being the next James Bond - and the producers didn't know what they were doing? This is where I see this heading - a refreshing change. I'm all for it!
I love how everyone hates on how serious Superman in modern times has gotten, and criticized the death of Zod. Just watch the end of the second film again; Superman crushes a defenseless Zod's hand into powder and then summarily executes him, allows the attempt to fly from Non the dumbass that gets him killed, and then Lois murders Ursa. The darkness of Man of Steel wasn't Superman killing Zod. It was Superman's battle killing (at minimum) thousands. Contrast that against Superman II where we get a crowd of angry Metropolis citizens marching to near certain death using melee weapons because (they believe) these three tyrants just killed Superman. You have essentially the same plot devices here, yet one is reminiscent of events like 9/11 and the humans are a distraction from the combat at best. The danger level is just as high in Superman II, but it's not bleak or depressing. And even shows how good people can be, that they'd see their savior lose and try to save or avenge him even though they all know they can't win. Something that helps justify this drive Superman has to save these people.
@@ianw0ng Exactly. Something the MCU learned to embrace to its success, and DC so far has not. Or at least, has not consistently managed to do, with a few rare exceptions.
I'm still on the fence about James Gunn doing superman. But I do think that at least his heart will be in the right place making the movie, after hearing about his late father getting him into reading comics. You could hear the passion for Gunn making this.
Sure thing, and I think Gunn understands how fundamentally different this character is compared to Guardians or Squad. Obviously, add that sense of aesthetic he's known to have, but under a nuanced approached. I fully believe he'll be able to top himself with Superman

My only main criticisms I have with James Gunn is that, while I highly applaud him on really being his own PR guy, and debunking fake stories and rumors from scoopers (boss move, btw), he has to manage better corporate communication skills. He obviously comes from the creative background of filmmaking, so his direct engagement at being a movie-buff makes him a person in that area; but he has to limit that fan-engagement towards users because anything he said can be turn against him. I always thought James Gunn would direct this. This universe is his (and Peter Safran) baby. This film is the real intro to their plans…he has to set the tone.
I agree. Although, I hope that he only gets to have his direct hands involved with Superman only, and then let the other filmmakers bring their flavor into the other movies and shows, and him and Safran sticking as producers. There's only so much that he can do in the creative front that balancing a lot of characters would give him a burnt out, which I hope he doesn't

He's the major co-lead and creative shepherd from the new DC Universe, and its from this iteration of the character that the new world will flesh out. That being said, I hope he highly knocks it out of the park. As much as I loved Man Of Steel, I can surely agree that Superman is in need for a sense of humoristic and joy balance, something that the tone of Guardians 1 really had. Admittedly he wasn’t my first choice but the more I thought about it the more I realized how great of a fit he is, because I think the main thing they’re gonna focus on bringing to this new Superman is a real sense of joy, because whether you love or hate Man Of Steel that was a very dark, somber movie, there weren’t really a lot of smiley moments in it, hell if you really think about it we haven’t seen a fun Superman since Superman IV, because both Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill were Supermen that were more dark and broody, and so I think that’s what James Gunn is gonna focus on, giving us a Superman movie that gives you the same sense of fun and joy that you would get watching a movie like say Jurassic Park or Adventures In Babysitting, which I’m excited to see because while I love Man Of Steel it’ll be cool to see a Superman movie where the tone is now on the other side of the spectrum, so I think this sounds like a great choice and I’m excited to see what James Gunn brings to the table with this movie
James Gunn is the perfect guy to handle Superman Legacy. He gets the character and he is a comic book fan. I just hope a fun, great movie and respect to Superman. I want to see actual Superman. And he is using Morrison's and Byrne's Superman as inspiration, that is great old school Superman, perfect.
... and yes john I love the bar scene too from man of steel with the truck. The crowd I saw that with in the imax theater busted out laughing including me.
I never understand the humor behind that particular scene; it only strikes me as being cynical and cold since the tone is so grim I'm having a hard whether to grin awkwardly or facepalm (it doesn't have to be Marvel-level of 'Ha-Ha' to make that scene work though)
Definitely curious to see how he's going to approach the character. He's done brightburn, slither and guardians to name a few, very curious on his tone. I just hope he isn't hokey like Reeves Superman sometimes came off.
What ever Superman we get I hope he's inspiring and not depressing. He doesn't need to crack joke's every minute but he also doesn't need to be a serious bore. Find the middle ground and tell a good story and I'll be good.
So people wanted a grounded Superman got one but did the complaint is too much destruction and killing yet the animation can have multiple buildings destroyed
@@randomcharacter6501 I get the and understand that which brings up a good point I think James Gunn superman will have him trying to save his father instead of having him die I seen that complaint as well I mean there are different versions of him being with his parents (earth parents) I just think a different take on something is nice rather than rehashing the same thing over again
I'm super Henry Cavill man of steel fan but I'm superman fan in the first place so I'm excited finally we going to see superman in big screen I hope James version badass like Zack Snyder not goofy like Shazam
Well, if we see it from a direct point-of-view, he's probably the second filmmaker to strike a positive look at WB next to Nolan. TSS might have bombed at the B.O., but was highly well-received, and Peacemaker cemented on that success highly on HBO Max, which is what the brass of Discovery looked at from a creative standpoint. And we may say he's a lucky smart ass, but he's shown that well-enough with the two projects I just mentioned, and that's why David Zaslav enlisted him for DC Studios
Looking back it makes you wonder if Ben was having a major PTSD flashback during the Sad Affleck BVS interview….. he was probably all ready completely done then! 👀😬
@racerx3673 did you not read my first comment? Just because it doesn't reach a billion doesn't mean it didn't make money PERIOD and who said anything like what you just said???? You're not making any sense.
Man, I just hope they don't do a Reeve like Superman. While I loved the more serious tone in MoS, but I get if they want to go a tad lighter. A Superman TAS feel would be awesome. A serious Clark Kent, a serious Superman, but also positive and hopeful. If its campy like the Reeve movies I won't see another Gunn led DC movie in the theaters ever again. I'll just catch it months later on streaming.
I hope Superman: Legacy makes lots and lots of bank, but I'd be happy if it performs like Batman Begins. Batman Begins was not a huge, massive, financial success, but it did well enough to get a sequel. You may have heard of the sequel since it did over $1 billion worldwide. Yep. The Dark Knight is a sequel to a movie that got nowhere near the billion dollar mark.
I like James Gunn and I'm a fan of his work. But he's a studio head now and isn't part of his job to find the best candidates for the job? He should be focusing on the whole picture now instead of personal projects. At least until you have a few hits under your watch. But I guess at the end of the day as long as the movie is good, it's not like DCEU set the bar high or anything lol. (All Star Superman btw)
That’s the literal reason why he accepted the position of “co-head”. So he can focus on the creative side. I don’t think him directing this movie will cause any problems.
Why does Robert keep referring to Superman for All Seasons AND they keep showing the Cover for ALL STAR SUPERMAN!!!! 2 DIFFERENT BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!! Is Robert not aware? Is it the graphics person's mistake? Or does nobody in the show know the difference!!!!😤
@@Minecraft_at_Night and what’s comic accurate about a superman that would destroy a truck and a military satellite to teach a lesson? I was hoping The Daniels were gonna be chosen to direct esp after their Oscar win, but seems about right for Gunn to direct after writing it. Hope we get more info at Comic Con
Nah, I rather don't. Sometimes, whenever they try to get the early indie darling for huge projects, their careers get a hiccup. Look at Josh Trank and Marc Webb (though he's had more breakthroughs recently). Also, they're currently now signed up for Universal in a big five-year movie deal, which they signed on about a month after Everything Everywhere
Not sure I like this, I mean Gunn can pull off a great movie but it's like feige directing, writing and supervising the first Iron Man. I hope this turns out amazing
@@MT-si3bu Yes, of course but like they said in the video my fears are that this becomes overwhelming for Gunn and there will be no one supervising his work on this movie like there's was of Feige on Jon Favreou's Iron Man. I just hope this all works out
Suicide Squad was kinda terrible to me. I could only watch it once. Peacemaker was good. I just hope DC does the villains right this time. All of their villains in the previous films have been forgettable and thrown away.
I expect a good flick. I just hope they find a way to call back to the undies without actually using the undies. For the love of God don't bring back the undies. Do some red padding on the legs of some sort. Or a big red belt. Comics already do that.

@@mrbluesky4838 I don't believe those movies were train wreck. MOS was fine and great just like BvS.
Classic superman was created by two Jewish guys.......
"Why do you say this to me when you know I will kill you for it?" -Zod
James Gunn doesn’t have the pedigree to make a classic Superman movie. That’s a job for Spielberg.
Bullshit
... and yes john I love the bar scene too from man of steel with the truck.
How did he smash that Truck without making a sound ?
This is great! He’s such a talented storyteller and I can’t wait to see his take on a more joyful, kinder Superman
I think Gunn will do a great job.
Definitely curious to see how he's going to approach the character. He's done brightburn, slither and guardians to name a few, very curious on his tone. I just hope he isn't hokey like Reeves Superman sometimes came off.
This artwork is NOT from all seasons. It’s all star..both great stories either way.
That computer in Superman 3 gave me nightmares as a kid too‼️ I hated that movie because of it LOL
So, if Campea says Shazam, does that result into a wardrobe change? 😀
What ever Superman we get I hope he's inspiring and not depressing. He doesn't need to crack joke's every minute but he also doesn't need to be a serious bore. Find the middle ground and tell a good story and I'll be good.
I have a feeling and expect a Christopher Reeve Style like Superman in 2025
I wish they make it like that...Superman should be charming and celebrated...not dark and gloomy.
David Corenswet as Superman.
Gunn needs to capture the same magic that Lois & Clark did
So people wanted a grounded Superman got one but did the complaint is too much destruction and killing yet the animation can have multiple buildings destroyed
I believe that artwork is from All Star Superman not Superman for all seasons
All-Star Superman, Rob. That's not For All Seasons.
I thought John was wearing a blonde wig lol
Karen Gillan as Lois!
I'm super Henry Cavill man of steel fan but I'm superman fan in the first place so I'm excited finally we going to see superman in big screen I hope James version badass like Zack Snyder not goofy like Shazam
James gunn basically has made himself direct with max freedom, what a lucky smart ass
Remember the sound Lurch made when he was Disgusted ? INSERT that HERE !! Got it ?
He’s gotta set the tone out the gate
Looking back it makes you wonder if Ben was having a major PTSD flashback during the Sad Affleck BVS interview….. he was probably all ready completely done then! 👀😬
Gunn will also star in Superman: Legacy.
Will Reeve needs to be the next farm boy.
All-Star Superman, Rob, not Superman: For All Seasons.
Surely he can't fuck this up, I'm excited
God I hope he doesn't; there's too many great talents who often stumbles even if they try their best, and that's a gamble worth taking.
Wonderful discussion guys!
I hate it when people think that any movie has to make a billion to be great or successful.
@racerx3673 did you not read my first comment? Just because it doesn't reach a billion doesn't mean it didn't make money PERIOD and who said anything like what you just said???? You're not making any sense.
Watch how quick Gunn gets burned out
Man, I just hope they don't do a Reeve like Superman.
It will be a very good movie.
Bruh I thought u were cosplaying Virgin Mary
Bizzaro should be the villain and introduce Lex in the post credit scene
Calm down
No best DC flicks were Aquaman and Man of Steel
I'd love it if James Gunn got the cinematographer from Bones and All to shoot the new Superman movie
That would be awesome
That’s All Star Superman
Superman 2 is better than Superman 1 what is he talking about
Nah, SI is way better than SIi
I absolutely hate MOS. That truck scene is a huge reason why.
@@Minecraft_at_Night Barely.
@@Minecraft_at_Night troll
Great... Another hater
@@Minecraft_at_Night and what’s comic accurate about a superman that would destroy a truck and a military satellite to teach a lesson? A superman that causes destruction and death in Metropolis without giving two shits. A superman that says lines like “no one stays good in the world.” Using a comic accurate and MOS in the same sentence is the definition of an oxymoron.
I have never been more confident in a project in my life.
I’m curious how a co CEO goes about hiring himself. How does that work? How does he negotiate his pay? With Peter Safran?
If he’s a CEO he’s already making an exorbitant amount money. It was probably a stipulation of his contract when he officially became DCU CO-CEO
What more money does the guy needs? I bet with his CEO salary alone he will do more money in a year than the amount of money you and I combine will do in our lifetime. I'm not saying working for free, but come on, these guys already have enough.
He isnt ceo of WARNER
Testicular Fortitude? Good one John for Big Balls Lol
Bright burn is the best superman movie
Man this is gonna be good ❤❤❤🥰🥰🥰Super can't wait
And you didn’t like Wonder Woman 2
Not to goddamn nitpick, but that’s All-Star Superman, not For All Seasons.
Contrary to John, they must cast not only a good actor, but the right TYPE of person as well. I'm in favor of Will Reeve, but admittedly I don't know if he has the acting chops to pull it off.
An ad 😊d every 90 seconds....really ?
If you're not on mobile, ad blocker is amazing
I was hoping The Daniels were gonna be chosen to direct esp after their Oscar win, but seems about right for Gunn to direct after writing it. Hope we get more info at Comic Con
Nah, I rather don't. Sometimes, whenever they try to get the early indie darling for huge projects, their careers get a hiccup. Look at Josh Trank and Marc Webb (though he's had more breakthroughs recently).
Also, they're currently now signed up for Universal in a big five-year movie deal, which they signed on about a month after Everything Everywhere
John Campea cosplays as Jesus Christ's mother in a Shazam costume.
Rob. You have to lower your $1B expectations for this film. That's ridiculous
PUMPED!!!!!!!!!!!👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Not sure I like this, I mean Gunn can pull off a great movie but it's like feige directing, writing and supervising the first Iron Man. I hope this turns out amazing
Feige isn’t a writer or director
@@MT-si3bu Yes, of course but like they said in the video my fears are that this becomes overwhelming for Gunn and there will be no one supervising his work on this movie like there's was of Feige on Jon Favreou's Iron Man. I just hope this all works out
Even more so it's like Feige writing, directing, and producing Spiderman or X-Men (your more iconic characters) the stakes are really high
@@yagopacheco2855 Gunn is co-CEO so he has someone to help him.
@@yagopacheco2855 He still has the backup of Peter Safran, and even WB Discovery, whom have been supportive and praising what he's been prepping up
I’m worry now with his depiction of Superman
They're gonna cast a new clark kent... Are they gonna cast a new Superman too ?
YES!!!!!
Suicide Squad was kinda terrible to me. I could only watch it once. Peacemaker was good. I just hope DC does the villains right this time. All of their villains in the previous films have been forgettable and thrown away.
Jmes Gunns Superman is going to have great music guaranteed, and knowing James Superman will have the red underwear in the 1st movie!
He better include "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down, or else, I ain't watching it, haha 😂
I expect a good flick.
I just hope they find a way to call back to the undies without actually using the undies.
For the love of God don't bring back the undies.
Do some red padding on the legs of some sort. Or a big red belt. Comics already do that.
live action ninja turtles in the new dc the dcu today now yes 🤩🤩
Ppl shit on MoS for being "Joyless". But there's no greater portrayal of joy than his 1st flight in it
I’ve already had a title in mind if I was making a superman original movie and the title would be superman the first flight
Man of Steel had joy I don't get what Rob means..
Clark and Lois relationship and flirtation
Clark drinking a beer enjoying a football game
Clark comes home to his mom after a long journey of discovery and finding his birth parents
Clark teaches a sexual harraser a lesson
Clark saves his bully
Clark and Pa Kent you are my son moment
Clarks first flight
Shit just got real when Zod showed up.
I think what Rob means is a lighter less serious tone like Shazam
If his girl is in this as lois lane I’m gonna fucking lose it 😡
Wouldn’t she be too old to play a Lois lane at the same age as superman?
I don't wanna play the "hater" card here, but I really don't believe that this is good news, at least yet. It's more like intriguing news. Yes, James has had success in several films but those were CERTAIN KIND OF STORIES WITH CERTAIN KIND OF CHARACTERS. And also yes, superman the movie shouldn't be a blueprint for this new upcoming movie but frankly I think it's gonna be somehow. We don't need another superman movie which character sort of resembles the figure of Christopher Reeve but WB and DC apparently keep doing that, so what would be the point??
They didn’t though. MOS and BvS were Snyder’s attempts to make the character ‘realistic’ which ended up being a train wreck of an adaptation
@@mrbluesky4838 I don't believe those movies were train wreck. MOS was fine and great just like BvS. But the problem with BvS was that, as a movie, it tried to do too much and too many things and I don't think Snyder is responsible for that, it's the studio itself that wanted to do things too quickly
The Christopher reeves Superman isn’t the inspiration for Legacy. All star Superman, and Superman for all seasons are.
@@iambuhlockay8007 I know, I'm taking about how the studios keep eventually making the next version of superman "to be" or resembling the figure of Reeve. Smallville did it during the last 3 seasons, superman returns, the arrowverse, even superman & lois at some point did it as well. So what's the point of marking new movies if eventually they all will somehow "copy" the Reeve's version?
@@lincoln2324 Nobody is copying the Reeves version. That’s just who Superman is.
