    One thing I really liked about Octo Expansion that I forgot to mention. While I generally like looking for secrets and collectibles, I appreciated that I was able to get through these challenges without having to stop and snoop around. It was refreshing to not have to worry about that stuff.

      yet at the same time, they still reward you for going out of your way. the rewards are less valuable, but it is still quite fun to find a well hidden one. One example is that in the replicate the dog mission, there is a hidden switch that I only noticed when my little sister was playing it (and she was the third person in the house to try it).

    I liked the fact that there weren't bosses when getting the thangs. After the challenging levels beforehand you expect an equally challenging boss but nothing comes. It's supposed to make you feel uneasy, like something's not quite right. Tartar wants you to collect the thangs so he can blend you into that primordial, world destroying ooze, just like he did with the most of the other 10,007 test subjects, so it makes sense there would be no resistance.

    Am I the only one who didn't have much trouble completing the Octo Expansion?
    Aside from a few stations, completing it wasn't too difficult and created an experience that really allowed Splatoon 2 players to excel and improve.
    I don't understand why so many people say it's the "Dark Souls of Splatoon 2."
    *Cough*Girl Power Station can suck one though*Cough*

      I agree - it was challenging but mostly it was the right level of challenge for me. Also, I think I lucked out, somehow I beat Girl Power really easily, I was just waiting around for them to spawn all the time.

    It's funny how Arlo prefers the original Octo Canyon over the Octo Expansion. Basically everything Arlo said applies to me to Octo Canyon. A lot of the levels in there felt like a chore to me and just frustrating as all hell. Octo Expansion however, made me have fun with every single level, each a new goal. And personally, I love a good challenge where you can just try over and over again without much penalty until you get it. Octo Canyon was frustrating because you had to do the whole boring level over again if you fell or died 3 times. With Octo Expansion you can just start again and the last checkpoint after paying a few CQ points, and I never was in any danger of running out of those.
    Octo Expansion was a solid 9,5/10 for me.

      misomie Exactly! The Expansion took me about a week to beat and Octo Canyon nearly 6 months!

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 6 лет назад +1

      From my experience I only ever had to restart a level *once* and that was the super heavy grinding one where you have to dodge around the wall cylinders, me totally forgetting I can just duck into the ink instead of trying to jump like it was Sonic Adventure 2.
      Meanwhile with the Expansion, I lost count of how many I needed to retry. At the very least, they ARE willing to let you re-pay to start at a checkpoint, but I find myself raging just as hard as the super short no checkpoint levels as well, so I don't always have that luxury.
      I barely get to actually have fun with the expansion and it makes me prefer the regular campaign that already had me eye rolling at how boringly identical it was to the first game. It's like there's no middle ground here, either a boring copycat short campaign or a longer one that makes me scream at a game more than any Souls game has.
      ...Not that I'm seriously comparing Souls in actual gameplay like any jackass would, I'm just saying when I'm yelling less at THAT than friggin Splatoon, I feel there's an issue when I know Souls can have pretty cheap deaths.

    I think you misinterpreted the "magical song turns bad guy into good guy" bit. the theme is that octolings live under a very repressed "society", and hearing a song so super-charged with the feeligns of freedom in the inkling society just... inspires them to break free, themselves, but in a very explosive way. Kinda as if they were brainwashed and the song shook them out of it.
    It's still plenty game logic-y, but it totally goes with the themes of these games.
    Also, in general, sorry to hear about your bad experience with octo expansion; for me, and most people I've talked to, it was a very rewarding kind of difficulty. Did you notice that the stations were ranked by difficulty, with the ones lower down the alphabet having the easier levels and the ones higher up having harder levels? I intentionally paced my progress by clearing out the easier ones first and then moving up, and the difficulty curve felt "right" most of the time. there very rarely was a harder-than-it-should-be level(you got hit by enemy ink. test failed. BOOM), but it was rare. Only the secret boss felt like pure BS, and damn did it feel GREAT to finally beat him.
    Oh, and, uh, the donkey kong DLC doesn't take place in a different universe or anything. They just get sent to a different location and time, wich is what the washing time machine does. That's why DK and the megabug and so and such are there.
    but yeah. it was overall pretty damn easy. until the ultimate challenges, wich crank the difficulty up to 11...k.

    • @alexanderthomas3187
      @alexanderthomas3187 6 лет назад +15

      I kind of get the feeling that Arlo doesn't care about Splatoon's lore. Like, at all. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's pretty hard to be invested in a story when you just plain don't care about it.
      I didn't know the bit about level difficulty being based off the subway line, but I agree that the difficulty was pretty reasonable most of the time.

  • @mr.moodle8836
    @mr.moodle8836 6 лет назад +60

    I think it must be challenging to balance the difficulty of DLC. When they first make a single-player campaign, getting the difficulty right isn't too hard, you can expect new players to go into the game with a similar skill level. But after a while, everything is sort of a mess. Some players are really strong, some players are still newbies. Your main critiques of both the DLCs were the difficulty. Octo Expansion shot for players above you, DK whatever-it's-called shot for players below you. Octo Expansion sort of dealt with this by having different weapons for different difficulties, but even the base difficulty was very challenging for some. Perhaps they should add more difficulty options for future DLC, but I don't know if that's the solution. What do you think?

    The DK DLC makes me hopeful that there may be an eventual *sequel* to Kingdom Battle (Which is definitely possible. This is rabbids we're talking about; when has continuity or plot ever stopped them?), involving even more characters to unlock, *including* the DLC characters from this time around. Heck, maybe even have it so you aren't *required* to have mario on your team at all times.
    Though, now that I think about it... dear god that would get insane and possibly broken. I mean seriously; imagine Donkey Kong, Rabbid Cranky, and *Yoshi* all on the same team. *NOTHING WILL SURVIVE THAT*

  • @ewormXD
    @ewormXD 6 лет назад +63

    That's funny to hear Arlo complain that Octo Expansion had him cautiously and slowly moving through levels and miss the Octo Canyon missions, because it's the exact opposite for me.
    See, the Octo Canyon levels have one thing Octo Expansion levels don't - and that's hidden secrets. I absolutely LOATHE the nonsensical crates popping out of the ground in random spots when you splat it with ink - because with those, the game is telling me: "do not proceed through the stage until you've inked every last inch". As a result, it's the regular single player that I still haven't beaten. I gave up on it, because of how slow and tedious it was.
    For me, it's the Octo Expansion levels that are short and sweet. No need to ink, no need to explore, there is one objective - go for it. Of course that's not to say certain stations weren't frustratingly difficult, but they were still fun and snappy - and there's always another route you can take to get to the thang if a certain level just ain't letting you through.
    The secret final boss can octo my ling though. As far as I'm concerned, it's really a hack check - the players who have the item received after the secret boss are who Nintendo is going to ban, because that is not a winnable fight otherwise.

    • @Raminator243
      @Raminator243 6 лет назад +7

      I totally agree with you about Octo canyon. It was super tedious to search every last nook and cranny for collectibles. I even stop to fight with the camera just to make sure there isn't some random scroll on a platform under the stage. I like the lack of collectibles in the expansion, but it is really hard and can get frustrating.

    Octo Expansion was something I was really unsure of because of the price, but it was totally worth it. So many fun (though tough-as-nails) levels, a lot of needed characterization given to Pearl and Marina (wtf I love Pearl now what happened), and an amazing final sequence.
    Also got surprisingly dark. I can’t believe I didn’t see the big twist coming.

    Eh, the way agent 8 becomes a good guy may feel a little contrived, but it also hearkens back to the campaign of the first game and relates to how Marina is also a good Octoling. They never fully explain it, but the implication is that the green Octarians are “sanitized” octarians (and octolings) that had to essentially be reconditioned after also hearing Calamari Inkantation. This is also what happened to dedf1ish, the octoling DJ who performs the music of the levels.

    I didnt realize it was 80's theme, how many more layers of 8 are in this?
    But how was the calamari incantation thing cheap? I thought it was already implied thats why marina was good, that same reasoning applied to another octoling doesnt seem that farfetched.

    • @orbic521
      @orbic521 6 лет назад +1

      I get Arlo's perspective though, I mean, a song that automatically turns bad guys good? I did expect a little more of a reason, but eh I'm not too worried about it. Splatoon has always been very music-based anyways.

    • @Gatekid3
      @Gatekid3 6 лет назад +3

      But its not like it was out of nowhere. like you said its been music oriented for a while with dj octavio and all that.
      the splatoon 2 story involved the calimari inkantation in the final boss
      marina was implied to be changed for the same reason.
      so to me it works because the world set it up as a possibility.

  • @alexanderthomas3187
    @alexanderthomas3187 6 лет назад +3

    Being an avid Splatoon 2 player, I pre-ordered the Octo Expansion and don't regret it one bit. I found the Hero Mode to be a bit lacking in challenge and depth, but Octo paid that back in spades. Just about every level was a very reasonable challenge for me and had enough variety to them that I never got tired of them. It was enough for me to actually go back and replay the levels with other weapons, which I never felt the desire to do with Hero Mode. 80 levels is a lot, but each of them managed to feel reasonable and unique (Girl Power Station can go get bent, though).
    I also liked the darker atmosphere of Octo, and while the story wasn't Shakespeare, I felt there was still a greater sense of purpose to the story than Splatoon has had in the past. Even the little things, like Pearl's and Marina's banter and the Mem Cakes, added an extra something for me. It's amazing how much content is here for $20.
    I'm a little surprised that Arlo didn't mention the ability to skip levels after failing them a certain number of times. I wouldn't say it totally removes the frustration, but it's there if you start losing your patience.

    I absolutely LOVED the Octo Expansion. I'm a huge fan of Splatoon 2 so getting it was a no brainer. I kind of turned off that sense of plot holes that Arlo has and just enjoyed hopping around each level and completing the challenges. In do agree that some are a bit too painstakingly difficult, and some are so easy you breeze through them in one go, but most for me reached the in between perfectly. I also thought the gear given to you for each set of mem cakes you acquire was a pretty good way for people to take their time and experience all of the levels they worked so hard on. I also thought that it does a really good job of teaching you the weapons you're given so you can make the most out of their very creative puzzles. About the Rabbids DLC, I didn't buy it because I don't absolutely love Mario and Rabbids like a lot of other people. I can't say anything about it

    Octo Expansion is basically a glorified Mission Mode. It's a bunch of short bite-sized challenges that range from incredibly easy to frustatingly hard, and that distincts it from Octo Canyon. Ending is absolutely amazing, but some of its storytelling contradicts the base game, as much of Nintendo's DLC does. Definetely buy if you enjoy the Splatoon franchise but it probably won't change the minds of those who don't.

    • @Xnaut314

      Kirby the Artist I gave my 2 cents on Octo Expansion, so yes if you enjoy the Splatoon franchise and want more content, but no if you only ever play whenever a Splatfest is active and don't care about playing as an Octoling online. DK Adventure feels like an extra chapter of Mario&Rabbids with about a Chapter 2 difficulty, since that's the soonest the DLC can be activated in a new file. If you like to constantly shuffle the partner characters with each match then unlocking DK and Rabbid Cranky Kong is worth your while, but if you usually stick to using one or two distinct team setups it may not be worth it in the end.

    The true purpose of the tests were revealed in the final boss fight.
    Calamari Inkantation has been around since Splatoon 1 and it's effects detailed in one of the Splatoon 2 Scrolls.
    Difficulty isn't random, it arranged by lines. You're hitting a series of hard levels in a row because you're continuing on the same line. Just change to an easier line if you need to recharge.
    Just needed to get this out there so that people who haven't played yet aren't as confused when they go into it.
