How to Use Easel with V-Bits Without Using Easel Pro

  • I am very pleased with the results each and every time I have used this method. This method will not work in every situation depending on your specific project, however, it will work extremely well the vast majority of the time. You will lose some of the fine detail that is provided in Easel Pro toolpath and you may wish to consider purchasing the subscription to Easel Pro or purchase another software package that supports VCarving which will be considerable more expensive. I have been very pleased with FREE Easel Software and I am pleased the Inventables provides four free days per month. I do not work for Inventables and I am not endorsed by Inventables. I am just a happy customer sharing my experiences on how to get the most out of a remarkable CNC machine.

    Great tip for the V bit. Also, if you’re desperate to use a Pro-Font with no free days left, download the font to your computer (hundreds free online - quick google search) and type out your word/phrase in a photo edit software such as InkScape and then convert to a SVG file (Inkscape can do this, as can many websites). You can then import this SVG file and edit size and placement. You won’t be able to edit the text unless you re-import the edit, but it means you can use fancy fonts for free 👍

    This is really creative. I give you props for that. I want to expand the statement that you made: "You will lose some of the fine detail that is provided in Easel Pro toolpath" What this really means in that the font will change. A v carve toolpath is very different that the toolpath created by what you are presenting here. This will change the font shape. Thin wispy lines will be thickened. The result may be acceptable to you and to many, but you are not tricking the software into doing vcarving. You are doing an endmill tool path. There is no depth adjustment that would normally occur that preserves the font accuracy. But this can workout in your favor but it will be somewhat unpredictable.

    Great video... As i said before you can use v bits in easel.... You just need to do some fenagling with settings lol....another trick i have is if you have a text that the profile outline of it isnt as wide as you like.....you could make it wider by lying to easel about the bit dia....if you want the text to machine wider you can just use a 1/8 bit but tell easel you are using a 3/16 bit and theoretically this should make the text profile 1/8 wider overall....assuming you have proper space and not interfere with other parts of the project....using this you would need to make sure your project can handle the trick method....but it should work in some cases...i used this method other day and it worked...the text wasnt as beefy as i wanted and i couldnt resize to thickness i wanted properly without distorting so i lied about bit and it made an equally increased text profile..and turned out well

  • @shelby50411
    @shelby50411 5 лет назад +2

    One thing to add..you can use a vbit in easel but you cant vcarve is easel....the vcarving process uses unique xyz moves in the process of doing text if you just use a vbit in easel it will only do xy moves while doing the text....so you wont get same results but you will get results such as paw paw which can look nice

      You are correct. I explained that in the video. The machine is carving as if a .010 straight bit was in place. I also stated that you will lose some of the fine detail that true vcarving will do. Thank you

    • @PawPawsWorkShop
      @PawPawsWorkShop  3 года назад +1

      If you have an older account then you have the four free days. After July 2020 (if I remember correctly) then you have a 30 days trial period, after that you must purchase the Easel Pro

      First question and the most important is did you open your Inventables account after July 28,2020? (I believe that is the correct date) If you did, then you only get a 30 trial offer of Pro, then you purchase the subscription or you do not have Pro.
      If you account is older than that when the menu pops up to purchase, hit the "option" tab and select a free day.

      @@PawPawsWorkShop thank you for your response, I see what you mean now, also whilst I can, can i pick your brains about something? The strangest thing keeps happening to my x carve, whether it be a start from scratch carve or using zero position from previous run, every now and again my machine will randomly go to the start position to start carving, when the z axis moves down for some reason it doesn't stop, it has gone straight through my project piece and straight into my original spoiler board, it has done this 4 times in the past 2 days, ( I have only been using it for 2 days as I have only just got it) ( brand new) any ideas as to why ? It has also destroyed the 2 perspex pieces that come with the dust boot. But then 90% of the time it does it as per my setting and runs fine. (I do not make any adjustments when it has its moments)

    • @PawPawsWorkShop
      @PawPawsWorkShop  4 года назад

      Inventables changed their policy. Effective July21, 2020 (if I remember correctly) any purchase before that day you will continue to get the four free days. After that day you will have a 30 day free trial and then purchase Easel Pro to be able to continue to use. With that said, I am going to assume you are grandfathered in and have the four free days. When you design a project with v bits or with pro fonts that will trigger Pro. When you go to carve it will tell you your 30 trial is over and offer the purchase. Well look up at the "Option" box at the top of the page select that and you will get the option to use one of your four free days.

    Hi, great video, I need some advice please. I am trying to rough out a basic name using a large font size using an 1/8" bit , then I would like to change the bit to a 60 degree V bit using the settings in your video just to clean up the edges. Is this possible? Have you posted a video on this subject? any help would be much appreciated. Thank you John. (UK)

    • @PawPawsWorkShop
      @PawPawsWorkShop  3 года назад

      Yes, that is call two stage carving in easel. Put you roughing bit in first and add a second bit. Look up in the right hand corner where you see the bit. Next to that is a "+" click on that to add the 60 degree detail bit. When you carve, it will ask you which bit you are using. You will have to z probe again when you change bits.

    I'm having trouble cutting all the way through my project with my V bit. How am I able to do that?

    • @PawPawsWorkShop
      @PawPawsWorkShop  4 года назад

      Typically a v bit is not used to cut all the way through the wood. The way the CNC works is that when the edge of the project is touched by the bit in the design it will not go any deeper into the wood. Therefore, the project would have to be wide enough not to touch the edge of the design before it cut all the way though the wood.

    I done the same thing recently and also carved with a pro font by taking a screenshot of my text in a PRO font then using basic MS Paint and paste the image, crop it then save as a jpeg then create the svg file to import to Easel.
