Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks, and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. I am a late bloomer at 70 who now has the time to play with color and paints after retiring from teaching for 33 years. I have previously worked in realism and colored pencils, but I am sticking my toe in abstract art and have received the NOVA paints you use and am anxious to try them. Thank you for your videos and inspiration.
That's wonderful, Jen! Congratulations on retiring. Have fun creating!!
For anyone that doesn’t have it, I recommend your longer course. It is so complete and you do such a great job that I can’t recommend it enough. I love the concertina also, but if the person needs to choose I recommend the long one. ❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for that , Rita! I put everything into that course so that it was filled with exercises and the basics. I'm so glad you liked it!
Betty, it's one o'clock in the morning here in Tennessee, and I am still watching your videos. Just watched part of your May 2024. When you need to change a little of your art when people complain, they all look alike thats when you as an artist get to step left and change!!! You did it lady. This artwork is different, but it's in your style!!! They can't say that anymore!!!! You have reached a great plateu!! I love these small paintings!!!! Wonderful!! And you can tell this is still your artwork!!! The colors are wonderful!! You have learned how to be different but, still the same!! God Bless!!!
You are super kind, Lawana! Thank you for your sweet message. I hope you got some sleep!
I love watching you work, listening to you chat, and your courses are fantastic!! If anyone reading this is considering the courses, go for it!!!
Wow, thank you so much, Lori Beth!
A workshop with Krista Harris?! I love her work. I'm happy you're getting to go enjoy that experience. I think I'll go enjoy browsing through her website now.
Yes...Krista! I have admired her and her art for years. So excited to finally be in a workshop with her!
If I were in a room with Krista Harris and you and Pam Caughey I would explode with happiness! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
@@runningwarrior5468 I love Pamela, too! 🩷🩷🩷
So happy to have been a part of the workshop last week Betty. These came out beautiful as always. I watched and checked my workshop notes to make sure I hadn't missed something. HEART!
Hi Nancy! Thanks so much for watching the entire video!!
HEART. Love how these latest pieces turned out. ♥
Thank you so much, Debra! I appreciate you sticking around to the end!
❤ Betty I loved the warm palette you had already on your boxes before you even began making marks. I am going to use those colors as inspiration for a creation this weekend. Beautifull work as always.
Yay! Sounds like you have some fun weekend plans! Thanks so much for watching the entire video!
Another good learning experience. Talking through your process is so helpful. ❤

Thank you kindly! I appreciate you being here!
Thanks so much for sharing. Love watching you work.🥰
Thanks so much 😊
I love watching you paint. Your style is so unique. I’ve tried to incorporate some of your methods in my work as well without copying you.
Wonderful! That's the best way to learn and use without copying! I have done that in the past. When I find an interesting mark or technique, I find a way to incorporate it into my art. Thanks so much for watching!
❤❤So glad to hear you will be having another SantaFe workshop! You’re the best teacher!
Thank you and thanks for watching! I appreciate you staying with me to the end of the video!
Thank you for sharing your different techniques and explaining your process of your painting 🥰👍

I enjoy watching your videos, always to the end, and I’m learning so much. Just did the Creative Visionary Program with Nicholas Wilton and watching you paint shows me how I can add another dimension to what I learned in his program. He talks about approaching art-making fearlessly, and you embody that idea. Thank you so much. 💋😍
Thanks so much, Kathe! Although I haven't taken a course with him, he's a great teacher. I'm glad I was able to help you in your art journey, too. Keep on creating!
Loved watching, and yes to the end, i painted realistic but now i started with mixed media and love it. ❤

So glad!
I will learn a lot of painting from you in this video, I will download it,
Fantastic! Enjoy!
I have been painting along …awesome
Wonderful! Thanks for joining me, David!
Betty, thank you, beautiful HEART, haha! Question: do you treat every layer like a new painting, incorporating previous things you like or don't like, but not accommodating and painting AROUND the previous layer? That is always my challenge to not be attached. So curious about your modus operandi!! Thank you darling!
Hi Ulrike! That's a great question! I try not to save anything from the previous layer that will make it harder for me to move forward. I find that if I try to work around a specific area, the entire painting doesn't work. I have to be a bit detached from previous layers so that I can move forward to the final layer--and the finished piece. I hope that makes sense!
Thank you so much, Betty! This makes so much sense. I watched enough of your RUclipss to have sensed this, but since I run into attachment, I wanted to clarify. Thanks so much, darling.
❤

Hi Lida! I have only used glazing medium and didn't have any issues. But, it's best to try it out first. Wishing you many wonderfully creative hours in the studio!

Hi Betty seems a while since I last commented on your channel , when I advocated that you should consider going for a large scale project . Well I doubt very much you would have taken any notice of me , but by a natural progression you seem to have come to the same conclusion . Although this video is centred on the small aspect of your work . Obviously by means of showing your approach to your art . But if you remember back a few years ago I drew a similarly to the work of Lee Krasner , I still stand by that notion . And having recently looked back at Lees work , such a Re-Echo where I see the same level of creative freedom and understanding . Hope the world is being kind to you regards as always , from a rather rainy UK 😀
Hi! Thanks so much for watching this video! I'm not sure when it was you advocated that I should create on a larger scale. I've been creating larger works for many years. My first two 6x6 feet canvases were back in 2018 and my most recent in that same size was back in December of 2023. I've created a lot of other large pieces, too. But, I also love to create smaller ones! Thank you again for being here! Sending you sunshine from California!

Love this video ❤Heart! Question: what fixative do you use? I’ve had trouble dealing China markers and painting over their marks. Thank you so much!
Also, do you use the fixative as you go through putting in layers or just at the end before putting on your varnish? Thanks again for all you share. Your work is gorgeous. 🙏
Hi Marca! Thanks so much for watching to the end of this video! I mostly use Krylon Fixatif and I only use it at the end. Here's a video of my process: ruclips.net/video/bVACgRad2Qk/видео.html I hope it helps!

Hi Betty, you mentioned the Santa Fe workshop is going to be announced on January 1st. Do you know what the dates are for that workshop yet? ❤
Hi Marian! Unfortunately, I have not worked out the dates from Bev (the host). We usually do that later in the year. It will most likely be in May again. Thanks for asking!
@@BettyFranksArt thanks!
I see you used the deference king of Colour, and acrylic paint, and the king of Chinese markers I never see that ,
Yes, I use a variety of mark making tools. Thanks for watching, Samba!
I really need the beginning video !!! Can you do it & record it again please ... thx
I'm sorry! I wish I could go back and recreate those first layers, but I can't. However, I have tons of other videos showing my process from start to finish. Please check those out. Thank you!
Hi Betty - do you have an online class on learning about colours? I'm sure you do but I can't find it now
Hi Natasha! I don't have a specific course on colors. I include information in my online course: bettyfranksart.thinkific.com/courses/fields-of-flowers-an-abstract-art-painting-course
I also have this video on YT about mixing colors: ruclips.net/video/ZJjNPp3j0t0/видео.html

I ordered your bundle from nova color 2 weeks ago and it still has not shipped ugh I called them they are moving but seems it is taking a long time hoping to get my order soon but probably won’t be here for a month.
I received mine today. It took 7 days, and I live in Memphis, TN.
I'm so sorry April! I understand they have been getting a lot of orders and they moved to a new location. I hope it arrives soon!

Hi
Hi! Thanks for watching!
I like this art, though it looks like a salad, and many details mixed up and no particular images, and its not abstract I want to learn. No offense but the art should deliver some kind of message or association. For this reason , I am more attracted to the art of Cathy Mevik.
My art is inspired by my love for fields of flowers. It seems that it doesn't speak to you. That's okay. I wish you all the best!
Thanks!
